These are the notes for the lecture given by the author at the "Current Events" Special Session of the AMS meeting in Baltimore on January 17, 2003. Topics reviewed include the Langlands correspondence for GL(n) in the function field case and its proof by V.Drinfeld and L.Lafforgue, the geometric Langlands correspondence for GL(n) and its proof by D.Gaitsgory, K.Vilonen and the author, and the work of A.Beilinson and V.Drinfled on the quantization of the Hitchin system and the Langlands correspondence for an arbitrary semisimple algebraic group.
These lecture notes give an overview of recent results in geometric Langlands correspondence which may yield applications to quantum field theory. We start with a motivated introduction to the Langlands Program, including its geometric reformulation, addressed primarily to physicists. I tried to make it as self-contained as possible, requiring very little mathematical background. Next, we describe the connections between the Langlands Program and two-dimensional conformal field theory that have been found in the last few years. These connections give us important insights into the physical imp…
In this paper, we prove that, if Deligne's "petites camarades conjecture" holds, then a Langlands type correspondence holds also for $p$-adic coefficients on a smooth curve over a finite field. We also prove that any overconvergent $F$-isocrystal of rank less than or equal to 2 on a smooth variety is $ι$-mixed.
We study the two-dimensional twisted (0,2) sigma-model on various smooth complex flag manifolds G/B, and explore its relevance to the geometric Langlands program. We find that an equivalence - at the level of the holomorphic chiral algebra - between a bosonic string on G/B and a B-gauged version of itself on G, will imply an isomorphism of classical W-algebras and a level relation which underlie a geometric Langlands correspondence for G=SL(N,C). This furnishes an alternative physical interpretation of the geometric Langlands correspondence for G=SL(N,C), to that demonstrated earlier by Kapust…
All kinds of global correspondences of Langlands are evaluated from the functional representation spaces of the algebraic bilinear semigroups GL2(.x.) with entries in products, right by left,of sets of archimedean increasing completions. Degenerate singularities on these functional representation spaces can give rise,by versal deformations and blowups of these,to one or two new covering functional representation spaces of GL2(.x.) according to the type of considered singularities. The discovered correspondences of Langlands are associated with singular and nonsingular universal GL(2)-structures…
The Langlands Program relates Galois representations and automorphic representations of reductive algebraic groups. The trace formula is a powerful tool in the study of this connection and the Langlands Functoriality Conjecture. After giving an introduction to the Langlands Program and its geometric version, which applies to curves over finite fields and over the complex field, I give a survey of my recent joint work with Robert Langlands and Ngo Bao Chau (arXiv:1003.4578 and arXiv:1004.5323) on a new approach to proving the Functoriality Conjecture using the trace formulas, and on the geometr…
A brief survey is given of the classical Langlands correspondence between n-dimensional representations of Galois groups of local and global fields of dimension 1 and irreducible representations of the groups GL(n). A generalization of the Langlands program to fields of dimension 2 is considered and the corresponding version for 1-dimensional representations is described. We formulate a conjecture on a direct image (=automorphic induction) of automorphic forms which links the Langlands correspondences in dimension 2 and 1. The direct image conjecture implies the classical Hasse-Weil conjecture…
We discuss recent developments in the Langlands program for function fields, and in the geometric Langlands program. In particular we explain a canonical decomposition of the space of cuspidal automorphic forms for any reductive group G over a function field, indexed by global Langlands parameters. The proof uses the cohomology of G-shtukas with multiple modifications and the geometric Satake equivalence.
We provide an explicit proof of a recent result of Gaiotto arXiv:2110.02255 which gives an explicit formula for a so-called "multiplication kernel'' $K_3(x, y, z; t)$ intertwining the action of Hecke operators and Gaudin operators in three sets of variables. This function $K_3$ arises naturally in the context of the analytic formulation of the geometric Langlands program in the genus-zero case arXiv:1908.09677, arXiv:2103.01509, arXiv:2106.05243. We also discuss how the kernel $K_3$ relates to other objects typically considered in the analytic Langlands program.
These are informal notes written in 2007 that outline the local and global quantum Langlands program. (I decided to make them public in view of the revived interest in the subject.)
We present a gauge-theoretic interpretation of the "analytic" version of the geometric Langlands program, in which Hitchin Hamiltonians and Hecke operators are viewed as concrete operators acting on a Hilbert space of quantum states. The gauge theory ingredients required to understand this construction -- such as electric-magnetic duality between Wilson and 't Hooft line operators in four-dimensional gauge theory -- are the same ones that enter in understanding via gauge theory the more familiar formulation of geometric Langlands, but now these ingredients are organized and applied in a novel …
The global geometric Langlands correspondence relates Hecke eigensheaves on the moduli stack of G-bundles on a smooth projective algebraic curve X and holomorphic G'-bundles with connection on X, where G' is the Langlands dual group of G. This correspondence is relatively well understood when the connection has no singularities, i.e., is unramified. But what should happen if the connection has singularities, or ramification, at finitely many points of X? In this case we expect to attach to it a category of Hecke eigensheaves on a suitable moduli stack of G-bundles on X with parabolic (or level…
We generalise the analysis carried out in [arXiv:0710.5796], and find that our previous results can be extended beyond the case of SL(N,C). In particular, we show that an equivalence--at the level of the holomorphic chiral algebra--between a bosonic string on a smooth coset manifold G/B and a B-gauged version of itself on G, will imply an isomorphism of classical W-algebras and a level relation which underlie a geometric Langlands correspondence for the simply-laced, complex ADE-groups. In addition, as opposed to line operators and branes of an open topological sigma-model, the Hecke operators…
This paper deals with the geometric local theta correspondence at the Iwahori level for dual reductive pairs of type II over a non Archimedean field $F$ of characteristic $p\neq 2$ in the framework of the geometric Langlands program. First we construct and study the geometric version of the invariants of the Weil representation of the Iwahori-Hecke algebras. In the particular case of $(GL_1, GL_m)$ we give a complete geometric description of the corresponding category. The second part of the paper deals with geometric local Langlands functoriality at the Iwahori level in a general setting. Giv…
The Langlands Program was launched in the late 60s with the goal of relating Galois representations and automorphic forms. In recent years a geometric version has been developed which leads to a mysterious duality between certain categories of sheaves on moduli spaces of (flat) bundles on algebraic curves. Three years ago, in a groundbreaking advance, Kapustin and Witten have linked the geometric Langlands correspondence to the S-duality of 4D supersymmetric gauge theories. This and subsequent works have already led to striking new insights into the geometric Langlands Program, which in partic…
We continue to develop the analytic Langlands program for curves over local fields initiated in arXiv:1908.09677, arXiv:2103.01509 following a suggestion of Langlands and a work of Teschner. Namely, we study the Hecke operators introduced in arXiv:2103.01509 in the case of P^1 over a local field with parabolic structures at finitely many points for the group PGL(2). We establish most of the conjectures of arXiv:1908.09677, arXiv:2103.01509 in this case.
We construct and study a closed, two-dimensional, quasi-topological (0,2) gauged sigma model with target space a smooth G-manifold, where G is any compact and connected Lie group. When the target space is a flag manifold of simple G, and the gauge group is a Cartan subgroup thereof, the perturbative model describes, purely physically, the recently formulated mathematical theory of "Twisted Chiral Differential Operators". This paves the way, via a generalized T-duality, for a natural physical interpretation of the geometric Langlands correspondence for simply-connected, simple, complex Lie grou…
The global nilpotent cone N is a singular stack associated to the choice of an algebraic group G, a smooth projective curve X, and a line bundle L on X, which is of fundamental importance to the Geometric Langlands Program, and which is of emerging importance to the Classical Langlands Program. In analogy with the ordinary Springer resolution, we construct and study a resolution of singularities of N in the special case where G=SL_2. As an immediate application, we prove that N is equidimensional and also provide an enumeration of its irreducible components. We hope this is the first step in c…
