Remarks on magnetic flows and magnetic billiards, Finsler metrics and a magnetic analog of Hilbert's fourth problem

We interpret magnetic billiards as Finsler ones and describe an analog of the string construction for magnetic billiards. Finsler billiards for which the law "angle of incidence equals angle of reflection" are described. We characterize the Finsler metrics in the plane whose geodesics are circles of a fixed radius. This is a magnetic analog of Hilbert's fourth problem asking to describe the Finsler metrics whose geodesics are straight lines.

Counting Periodic Trajectories of Finsler Billiards

We provide lower bounds on the number of periodic Finsler billiard trajectories inside a quadratically convex smooth closed hypersurface $M$ in a $d$-dimensional Finsler space with possibly irreversible Finsler metric. An example of such a system is a billiard in a sufficiently weak magnetic field. The $r$-periodic Finsler billiard trajectories correspond to $r$-gons inscribed in $M$ and having extremal Finsler length. Introducing sub-Riemannian and sub-Finsler Billiards

We define billiards in the context of sub-Finsler Geometry. We provide symplectic and variational (or rather, control theoretical) descriptions of the problem and show that they coincide. Some remarks on Finsler manifolds with constant flag curvature

Some remarks on Myers theorem for Finsler manifolds

The standard Bonnet-Myers theorem says that if the Ricci scalar of a Riemannian manifold is bounded below by a positive number, then the manifold is compact. Moreover, a bound of its diameter is pointed out. The theorem was extended to Finsler manifolds. In this paper we prove that if a certain condition on the average of the Ricci scalar holds, then the Finsler manifold M is compact if the Ricci scalar is bounded above by the same positive number. Remarks on Finsler Geometry and Lorentz Violation

The physics of classical particles in a Lorentz-breaking spacetime has numerous features resembling the properties of Finsler geometry. In particular, the Lagrange function plays a role similar to that of a Finsler structure function. A summary is presented of recent results, including new calculable Finsler structures based on Lagrange functions appearing in the Lorentz-violation framework known as the Standard-Model Extension.

Remarks on the Schwarzian Derivatives and the Invariant Quantization by means of a Finsler Function

The index of a geodesic in a Randers space and some remarks about the lack of regularity of the energy functional of a Finsler metric

In some recent papers, the relations existing between the metric properties of Randers spaces and the conformal geometry of stationary Lorentzian manifolds were discovered and investigated. In this note, we focus on the equality between the index of a geodesic in a Randers space and that of its lightlike lift in the associated conformal stationary spacetime. Moreover we make some remarks about regularity of the energy functional of a Finsler metric on the infinite dimensional manifold of $H^1$ curves between two points, in connection with infinite dimensional techniques in Morse Theory.

Remarks on Joachimsthal integral and Poritsky property

The billiard in an ellipse has an integral linear in momentum, the Joachimsthal integral. We show that the existence of such an integral characterizes conics. We extend this result to the spherical and hyperbolic geometries and to higher dimensions. We connect the existence of Joachimsthal integral with the Poritsky property, a property of billiard curves, called so after H. Poritsky whose important 1950 paper was one of the early studies of the billiard problem.

Finsleroid gives rise to the angle-preserving connection

The Finslerian unit ball is called the {\it Finsleroid} if the covering indicatrix is a space of constant curvature. A remark on the number of invisible directions for a smooth Riemannian metric

In this note we give a construction of a smooth Riemannian metric on R^n which is standard Euclidean outside a compact set K and such that it has N = n(n + 1)=2 invisible directions, meaning that all geodesics lines passing through the set K in these directions remain the same straight lines on exit.
