In this note we give a construction of a smooth Riemannian metric on R^n which is standard Euclidean outside a compact set K and such that it has N = n(n + 1)=2 invisible directions, meaning that all geodesics lines passing through the set K in these directions remain the same straight lines on exit. For example in the plane our construction gives three invisible directions. This is in contrast with billiard type obstacles where a very sophisticated example due to A.Plakhov and V.Roshchina gives 2 invisible directions in the plane and 3 in the space. We use reflection group of the root system An in order to make the directions of the roots invisible.
We establish the equivalence between the family of closed uniformly regular Riemannian manifolds and the class of complete manifolds with bounded geometry.
We study the spectrum of the Dirac operator $D$ on pseudo-Riemannian spin manifolds of signature $(p,q)$, considered as an unbounded operator in the Hilbert space $L^2_ξ(S)$. The definition of $L^2_ξ(S)$ involves the choice of a $p$-dimensional time-like subbundle $ξ\subset TM$. We establish a sufficient criterion for the spectra of $D$ induced by two maximal time-like subbundles $ξ_1,ξ_2\subset TM$ to be equal. If the base manifold $M$ is compact, the spectrum does not depend on $ξ$ at all. We then proceed by explicitely computing the full spectrum of $D$ for $\mathbb R^{p,q}$, the flat torus…
We show that in the first sub-Riemannian Heisenberg group there are intrinsic graphs of smooth functions that are both critical and stable points of the sub-Riemannian perimeter under compactly supported variations of contact diffeomorphisms, despite the fact that they are not area-minimizing surfaces. In particular, we show that if $f:\mathbb{R}^2\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a $C^1$-intrinsic function, and $\nabla^f\nabla^ff=0$, then the first contact variation of the sub-Riemannian area of its intrinsic graph is zero and the second contact variation is positive.
In this paper, we prove that the class of bi-f-harmonic maps and that of f-biharmonic maps from a conformal manifold of dimension not equal to 2 are the same (Theorem 1.1). We also give several results on nonexistence of proper bi-f-harmonic maps and f-biharmonic maps from complete Riemannian manifolds into nonpositively curved Riemannian manifolds. These include: any bi-f-harmonic map from a compact manifold into a non-positively curved manifold is f-harmonic (Theorem 1.6), and any f-biharmonic (respectively, bi-f-harmonic) map with bounded f and bounded f-bienrgy (respectively, bi-f-energy) …
Let $(M,g)$ be a Riemannian manifold with a distinguished point $O$ and assume that the geodesic distance $d$ from $O$ is an isoparametric function. Let $Ω\subset M$ be a bounded domain, with $O \in Ω$, and consider the problem $Δ_p u = -1$ in $Ω$ with $u=0$ on $\partial Ω$, where $Δ_p$ is the $p$-Laplacian of $g$. We prove that if the normal derivative $\partial_νu$ of $u$ along the boundary of $Ω$ is a function of $d$ satisfying suitable conditions, then $Ω$ must be a geodesic ball. In particular, our result applies to open balls of $\mathbb{R}^n$ equipped with a rotationally symmetric metri…
In this short note we study nonexistence result of biharmonic maps from a complete Riemannian manifold into a Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature. Assume that $ϕ:(M,g)\to (N, h)$ is a biharmonic map, where $(M, g)$ is a complete Riemannian manifold and $(N,h)$ a Riemannian manifold with nonpositive sectional curvature, we will prove that $ϕ$ is a harmonic map if one of the following conditions holds: (i) $|dϕ|$ is bounded in $L^q(M)$ and $ \int_M|τ(ϕ)|^pdv_g<\infty, $ for some $1\leq q\leq\infty$, $1< p<\infty$; or (ii) $Vol(M)=\infty$ and $ \int_M|τ(ϕ)|^pdv_g<\infty, $ fo…
More than forty years ago J. H. Samson has defined the Laplacian $Δ_{sym}$ acting on the space of symmetric covariant $p$-tensors on an $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$. This operator is an analogue of the well known Hodge-de Rham Laplacian $Δ$ which acts on the space of exterior differential $p$-forms ($1 \le p \le n$) on $(M, g)$. In the present paper we will prove that for $n > p = 1$ the operator $Δ_{sym}$ is the Yano rough Laplacian and show its spectrum properties on a compact Riemannian manifold.
We classify infinitesimally polar actions on compact Riemannian symmetric spaces of rank one. We also prove that every polar action on one of those spaces has the same orbits as an asystatic action.
Grosjean proved that the $(1/p)$-th power of the first eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian on a closed Riemannian manifold converges to the twice of the inverse of the diameter of the space, as $p \to \infty$. Before this, a corresponding result for the Dirichlet first eigenvalues was also obtained by Juutinen, Lindqvist and Manfredi. We extend those results for certain $k$-th min-max value related to the $p$-energy, where the corresponding limits are packing radii introduced by Grove-Markvorsen or its variant. Furthermore, we remark that our result holds for more singular setting.
For seven-dimensional Riemannian manifolds equipped with a $G_2$-structure, we show in a full detailed way that all integral formulas and divergence equations, given by diverse authors, are agree with the ones displayed here in terms of the intrinsic torsion of the $G_2$-structure. Likewise the components of such an intrinsic torsion is expressed by means of exterior algebra.
We first show that, for a fixed locally compact manifold $N,$ the space $L^2(S^1,N)$ has not the homotopy type odf the classical loop space $C^\infty(S^1,N),$ by two theorems: - the inclusion $C^\infty(S^1,N) \subset L^2(S^1,N)$ is null homotopic if $N $ is connected, - the space $L^2(S^1,N)$ is contractible if $N$ is compact and connected. After this first remark, we show that the spaces $H^s(S^1,N)$ carry a natural structure of Frölicher space, equipped with a Riemannian metric, which motivates the definition of Riemannian Frölicher space.
We classify all smooth flat Riemannian metrics on the two-dimensional plane. In the complete case, it is well-known that these metrics are isometric to the Euclidean metric. In the incomplete case, there is an abundance of naturally-arising, non-isometric metrics that are relevant and useful. Remarkably, the study and classification of all flat Riemannian metrics on the plane -- as a subject -- is new to the literature. Much of our research focuses on conformal metrics of the form $e^{2φ}g_0$, where $φ: \mathbb{R}^2 \rightarrow \mathbb{R)$ is a harmonic function and $g_0$ is the standard Eucli…
Some remarks on Finsler manifolds with constant flag curvature
In this paper we have obtained evolution of some geometric quantities on a compact Riemannian manifold $M^n$ when the metric is a Yamabe soliton. Using these quantities we have obtained bound on the soliton constant. We have proved that the commutator of two soliton vector fields with the same metric in a given conformal class produces a Killing vector field. Also it is shown that the soliton vector field becomes a geodesic vector field if and only if the manifold is of constant curvature.
In this paper, we shall give a new upper diameter estimate for complete Riemannian manifolds in the case that the Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature has a positive lower bound and the norm of the potential function has an upper bound. Our diameter estimate improves previous ones obtained by Wei and Wylie (J. Differential Geom. 83, 377--405, 2009) and Limoncu (Math. Z. 271, 715--722, 2012). As an application, we shall give an upper diameter bound for compact Ricci solitons in terms of the maximum value of the scalar curvature. By using such a diameter bound, we shall provide some new sufficient condit…
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact Riemannian surface without boundary, $W^{1,2}(M)$ be the usual Sobolev space, $J: W^{1,2}(M)\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be the functional defined by $$J(u)=\frac{1}{2}\int_M|\nabla u|^2dv_g+8π\int_M udv_g-8π\log\int_Mhe^udv_g,$$ where $h$ is a positive smooth function on $M$. In an inspiring work (Asian J. Math., vol. 1, pp. 230-248, 1997), Ding, Jost, Li and Wang obtained a sufficient condition under which $J$ achieves its minimum. In this note, we prove that if the smooth function $h$ satisfies $h\geq 0$ and $h\not\equiv 0$, then the above result still holds. Our method …
In this article, we examine the geometry of a group of Fourier-integral operators, which is the central extension of $Diff(S^1)$ with a group of classical pseudo-differential operators of any order. Several subgroups are considered, and the corresponding groups with formal pseudodifferential operators are defined. We investigate the relationship of this group with the restricted general linear group $GL_{res},$ we define a right-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric on it that extends the Hilbert-Schmidt Riemannian metric by the use of renormalized traces of pseudo-differential operators, and we …
We consider a Laplace eigenfunction $φ_λ$ on a smooth closed Riemannian manifold, that is, satisfying $-Δφ_λ= λφ_λ$. We introduce several observations about the geometry of its vanishing (nodal) set and corresponding nodal domains. First, we give asymptotic upper and lower bounds on the volume of a tubular neighbourhood around the nodal set of $φ_λ$. This extends previous work of Jakobson and Mangoubi in case $ (M, g) $ is real-analytic. A significant ingredient in our discussion are some recent techniques due to Logunov (cf. \cite{L1}). Second, we exhibit some remarks related to the asymptoti…
We discuss various characterizations of synthetic upper Ricci bounds for metric measure spaces in terms of heat flow, entropy and optimal transport. In particular, we present a characterization in terms of semiconcavity of the entropy along certain Wasserstein geodesics which is stable under convergence of mm-spaces. And we prove that a related characterization is equivalent to an asymptotic lower bound on the growth of the Wasseretein distance between heat flows. For weighted Riemannian manifolds, the crucial result will be a precise uniform two-sided bound for \begin{eqnarray*}\frac{d}{dt}\B…
