We prove the existence of a finite set of moves sufficient to relate any two representations of the same 3-manifold as a 4-fold simple branched covering of S^3. We also prove a stabilization result: after adding a fifth trivial sheet two local moves suffice. These results are analogous to results of Piergallini in degree 3 and can be viewed as a second step in a program to establish similar results for arbitrary degree coverings of S^3.
We give the rectangle condition for strong irreducibility of Heegaard splittings of $3$-manifolds with non-empty boundary. We apply this to a generalized Heegaard splitting of a $2$-fold covering of $S^3$ branched along a link. The condition implies that any thin meridional level surface in the link complement is incompressible. We also show that the additivity of knot width holds for a composite knot satisfying the condition.
We show that, for any prime p, a knot K in the 3-sphere is determined by its p-fold cyclic unbranched covering. We also investigate when the m-fold cyclic unbranched covering of a knot coincides with the n-fold cyclic unbranched covering of another knot, for different coprime integers m and n.
A combinatorial presentation of closed orientable 3-manifolds as bi-tricolored links is given together with two versions of a calculus via moves to manipulate bi-tricolored links without changing the represented manifold. That is, we provide a finite set of moves sufficient to relate any two manifestations of the same 3-manifold as a simple 4-sheeted branched covering of S^3.
A branched covering surface-knot is a surface-knot in the form of a branched covering over an oriented surface-knot $F$, where we include the case when the covering has no branch points. A branched covering surface-knot is presented by a graph called a chart on a surface diagram of $F$. We can simplify a branched covering surface-knot by an addition of 1-handles with chart loops to a form such that its chart is the union of free edges and 1-handles with chart loops. We investigate properties of such simplifications for the case when branched covering surface-knots have a non-zero number of bra…
We prove that a prime knot K is not determined by its p-fold cyclic branched cover for at most two odd primes p. Moreover, we show that for a given odd prime p, the p-fold cyclic branched cover of a prime knot K is the p-fold cyclic branched cover of at most one more knot K' non equivalent to K. To prove the main theorem, a result concerning the symmetries of knots is also obtained. This latter result can be interpreted as a characterisation of the trivial knot.
We prove the long-standing Montesinos conjecture that any closed oriented PL 4-manifold M is a simple covering of S^4 branched over a locally flat surface (cf [J M Montesinos, 4-manifolds, 3-fold covering spaces and ribbons, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 245 (1978) 453--467]). In fact, we show how to eliminate all the node singularities of the branching set of any simple 4-fold branched covering M \to S^4 arising from the representation theorem given in [R Piergallini, Four-manifolds as 4-fold branched covers of S^4, Topology 34 (1995) 497--508]. Namely, we construct a suitable cobordism between the…
We show that simple coverings of B^4 branched over ribbon surfaces up to certain local ribbon moves bijectively represent orientable 4-dimensional 2-handlebodies up to handle sliding and addition/deletion of cancelling handles. As a consequence, we obtain an equivalence theorem for simple coverings of S^3 branched over links, in terms of local moves. This result generalizes to coverings of any degree results by the second author and Apostolakis, concerning respectively the case of degree 3 and 4. We also provide an extension of our equivalence theorem to possibly non-simple coverings of S^3 br…

We consider branched coverings which are simple in the sense that any point of the target has at most one singular preimage. The cobordism classes of $k$-fold simple branched coverings between $n$-manifolds form an abelian group $Cob^1(n,k)$. Moreover, $Cob^1(*,k) = \bigoplus_{n=0}^{\infty} Cob^1(n,k)$ is a module over $Ω^{SO}_*$. We construct a universal $k$-fold simple branched covering, and use it to compute this module rationally. As a corollary, we determine the rank of the groups $Cob^1(n,k)$. In the case $n = 2$ we compute the group $Cob^1(2,k)$, give a complete set of invariants and co…
Starting with an O(2)-principal fibration over a closed oriented surface F_g, g>=1, a 2-fold covering of the total space is said to be special when the monodromy sends the fiber SO(2) = S^1 to the nontrivial element of Z_2. Adapting D Jonhson's method [Spin structures and quadratic forms on surfaces, J London Math Soc, 22 (1980) 365-373] we define an action of Sp(Z_2,2g), the group of symplectic isomorphisms of (H_1(F_g;Z_2),.), on the set of special 2-fold coverings which has two orbits, one with 2^{g-1}(2^g+1) elements and one with 2^{g-1}(2^g-1) elements. These two orbits are obtained by co…
A construction of a spatial graph from a strongly invertible knot was developed by the second author, and a necessary and sufficient condition for the given spatial graph to be hyperbolic was provided as well. The condition is improved in this paper. This enable us to show that certain classes of knots can yield hyperbolic spatial graphs via the construction.
We give an explicit formula for a 2-fold branched covering from $\mathbb{CP}^2$ to $S^4$, and relate it to other maps between quotients of $S^2\times{S^2}$.
The $d$-fold ($d \geq 3$) branched coverings on a disk give an infinite family of nongeometric embeddings of braid groups into mapping class groups. We, in this paper, give new explicit expressions of these braid group representations into automorphism groups of free groups in terms of the actions on the generators of free groups. We also give a systematic way of constructing and expressing these braid group representations in terms of a new gadget, called covering groupoid. We prove that each generator $\widetildeβ_i$ of braid group inside mapping class group induced by $d$-fold covering is t…
The Brieskorn manifolds $B(p,q,r)$ are the $r$-fold cyclic coverings of the 3-sphere $S^{3}$ branched over the torus knot $T(p,q)$. The generalised Sieradski groups $S(m,p,q)$ are groups with $m$-cyclic pre\-sen\-tation $G_{m}(w)$, where defining word $w$ has a special form, depending of $p$ and $q$. In particular, $S(m,3,2) = G_{m}(w)$ is the group with $m$ generators $x_{1}, \ldots, x_{m}$ and $m$ defining relations $w(x_{i}, x_{i+1}, x_{i+2})=1$, where $w(x_{i}, x_{i+1}, x_{i+2}) = x_{i} x_{i+2} x_{i+1}^{-1}$. Presentations of $S(2n,3,2)$ in a certain form $G_{n}(w)$ were investigated by Ho…
We show that every p-fold strictly-cyclic branched covering of a b-bridge link in the 3-sphere admits a p-symmetric Heegaard splitting of genus g=(b-1)(p-1). This gives a complete converse to a result of Birman and Hilden, and gives an intrinsic characterization of p-symmetric Heegaard splittings as p-fold strictly-cyclic branched coverings of links.
We are interested in finite groups acting orientation-preservingly on 3-manifolds (arbitrary actions, ie not necessarily free actions). In particular we consider finite groups which contain an involution with nonempty connected fixed point set. This condition is satisfied by the isometry group of any hyperbolic cyclic branched covering of a strongly invertible knot as well as by the isometry group of any hyperbolic 2-fold branched covering of a knot in the 3-sphere. In the paper we give a characterization of nonsolvable groups of this type. Then we consider some possible applications to the st…
We prove that any closed simply-connected smooth 4-manifold is 16-fold branched covered by a product of an orientable surface with the 2-torus, where the construction is natural with respect to spin structures. In particular this solves Problem 4.113(C) in Kirby's list. We also discuss analogous results for other families of 4-manifolds with infinite fundamental groups.
This work identifies a class of moves on knots which translate to $m$-equivalences of the associated $p$-fold branched cyclic covers, for a fixed $m$ and any $p$ (with respect to the Goussarov-Habiro filtration.) These moves are applied to give a flexible (if specialised) construction of knots for which the Casson-Walker-Lescop invariant (for example) of their $p$-fold branched cyclic covers may be readily calculated, for any choice of $p$. In the second part of this paper, these operations are illustrated by some theorems concerning the relationship of knot invariants obtained from finite typ…
Let M be a compact, connected surface, possibly with a finite set of points removed from its interior. Let d,n be positive integers, and let N be a d-fold covering space of M. We show that the covering map induces an embedding of the n-th braid group B_n(M) of M in the (dn)-th braid group B_{dn}(N) of N, and give several applications of this result. First, we classify the finite subgroups of the n-th braid group of the real projective plane, from which we deduce an alternative proof of the classification of the finite subgroups of the mapping class group of the n-punctured real projective plan…
For a closed oriented surface $ Σ$ we define its degenerations into singular surfaces that are locally homeomorphic to wedges of disks. Let $X_{Σ,n}$ be the set of isomorphism classes of orientation preserving $n$-fold branched coverings $ Σ\rightarrow S^2 $ of the two-dimensional sphere. We complete $X_{Σ,n}$ with the isomorphism classes of mappings that cover the sphere by the degenerations of $ Σ$. In case $ Σ=S^2$, the topology that we define on the obtained completion $\bar{X}_{Σ,n}$ coincides on $X_{S^2,n}$ with the topology induced by the space of coefficients of rational functions $ P/…
