Using techniques developed in [Lasserre02], we show that some minimum cardinality problems subject to linear inequalities can be represented as finite sequences of semidefinite programs. In particular, we provide a semidefinite representation of the minimum rank problem on positive semidefinite matrices. We also use this technique to cast the problem of finding convex lower bounds on the objective as a semidefinite program.

Modularity maximization has been a fundamental tool for understanding the community structure of a network, but the underlying optimization problem is nonconvex and NP-hard to solve. State-of-the-art algorithms like the Louvain or Leiden methods focus on different heuristics to help escape local optima, but they still depend on a greedy step that moves node assignment locally and is prone to getting trapped. In this paper, we propose a new class of low-cardinality algorithm that generalizes the local update to maximize a semidefinite relaxation derived from max-k-cut. This proposed algorithm i…
The positive semidefinite (psd) rank of a polytope is the smallest $k$ for which the cone of $k \times k$ real symmetric psd matrices admits an affine slice that projects onto the polytope. In this paper we show that the psd rank of a polytope is at least the dimension of the polytope plus one, and we characterize those polytopes whose psd rank equals this lower bound. We give several classes of polytopes that achieve the minimum possible psd rank including a complete characterization in dimensions two and three.
This paper develops new semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation techniques for two classes of mixed binary quadratically constrained quadratic programs (MBQCQP) and analyzes their approximation performance. The first class of problem finds two minimum norm vectors in $N$-dimensional real or complex Euclidean space, such that $M$ out of $2M$ concave quadratic functions are satisfied. By employing a special randomized rounding procedure, we show that the ratio between the norm of the optimal solution of this model and its SDP relaxation is upper bounded by $\frac{54M^2}π$ in the real case and …
For nonnegative integers $q,n,d$, let $A_q(n,d)$ denote the maximum cardinality of a code of length $n$ over an alphabet $[q]$ with $q$ letters and with minimum distance at least $d$. We consider the following upper bound on $A_q(n,d)$. For any $k$, let $\CC_k$ be the collection of codes of cardinality at most $k$. Then $A_q(n,d)$ is at most the maximum value of $\sum_{v\in[q]^n}x(\{v\})$, where $x$ is a function $\CC_4\to R_+$ such that $x(\emptyset)=1$ and $x(C)=0$ if $C$ has minimum distance less than $d$, and such that the $\CC_2\times\CC_2$ matrix $(x(C\cup C'))_{C,C'\in\CC_2}$ is positiv…
This paper focuses on the study of a mathematical program with equilibrium constraints, where the objective and the constraint functions are all polynomials. We present a method for finding its global minimizers and global minimum using a hierarchy of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations and prove the convergence result for the method. Numerical experiments are presented to show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
For nonnegative integers $n_2, n_3$ and $d$, let $N(n_2,n_3,d)$ denote the maximum cardinality of a code of length $n_2+n_3$, with $n_2$ binary coordinates and $n_3$ ternary coordinates (in this order) and with minimum distance at least $d$. For a nonnegative integer $k$, let $\mathcal{C}_k$ denote the collection of codes of cardinality at most $k$. For $D \in \mathcal{C}_k$, define $S(D) := \{C \in \mathcal{C}_k \mid D \subseteq C, |D| +2|C\setminus D| \leq k\}$. Then $N(n_2,n_3,d)$ is upper bounded by the maximum value of $\sum_{v \in [2]^{n_2}[3]^{n_3}}x(\{v\})$, where $x$ is a function $\m…
We study the convex hull of $SO(n)$, thought of as the set of $n\times n$ orthogonal matrices with unit determinant, from the point of view of semidefinite programming. We show that the convex hull of $SO(n)$ is doubly spectrahedral, i.e. both it and its polar have a description as the intersection of a cone of positive semidefinite matrices with an affine subspace. Our spectrahedral representations are explicit, and are of minimum size, in the sense that there are no smaller spectrahedral representations of these convex bodies.
Plain vanilla K-means clustering has proven to be successful in practice, yet it suffers from outlier sensitivity and may produce highly unbalanced clusters. To mitigate both shortcomings, we formulate a joint outlier detection and clustering problem, which assigns a prescribed number of datapoints to an auxiliary outlier cluster and performs cardinality-constrained K-means clustering on the residual dataset, treating the cluster cardinalities as a given input. We cast this problem as a mixed-integer linear program (MILP) that admits tractable semidefinite and linear programming relaxations. W…
We examine the problem of approximating a positive, semidefinite matrix $Σ$ by a dyad $xx^T$, with a penalty on the cardinality of the vector $x$. This problem arises in sparse principal component analysis, where a decomposition of $Σ$ involving sparse factors is sought. We express this hard, combinatorial problem as a maximum eigenvalue problem, in which we seek to maximize, over a box, the largest eigenvalue of a symmetric matrix that is linear in the variables. This representation allows to use the techniques of robust optimization, to derive a bound based on semidefinite programming. The q…
The T-product for third-order tensors has been used extensively in the literature. In this paper, we first introduce the first-order and second-order T-derivatives for the multi-vector real-valued function with the tensor T-product; and inspired by an equivalent characterization of a twice continuously T-differentiable multi-vector real-valued function being convex, we present a definition of the T-positive semidefiniteness of third-order symmetric tensors. After that, we extend many properties of positive semidefinite matrices to the case of third-order symmetric tensors. In particular, analo…
This paper studies a distributionally robust portfolio optimization model with a cardinality constraint for limiting the number of invested assets. We formulate this model as a mixed-integer semidefinite optimization (MISDO) problem by means of the moment-based ambiguity set of probability distributions of asset returns. To exactly solve large-scale problems, we propose a specialized cutting-plane algorithm that is based on bilevel optimization reformulation. We prove the finite convergence of the algorithm. We also apply a matrix completion technique to lower-level SDO problems to make their …
In this paper, we consider a bilevel polynomial optimization problem where the objective and the constraint functions of both the upper and the lower level problems are polynomials. We present methods for finding its global minimizers and global minimum using a sequence of semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxations and provide convergence results for the methods. Our scheme for problems with a convex lower-level problem involves solving a transformed equivalent single-level problem by a sequence of SDP relaxations; whereas our approach for general problems involving a non-convex polynomial low…
We consider a discrete-time Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control problem in which Massey's directed information from the observed output of the plant to the control input is minimized while required control performance is attainable. This problem arises in several different contexts, including joint encoder and controller design for data-rate minimization in networked control systems. We show that the optimal control law is a Linear-Gaussian randomized policy. We also identify the state space realization of the optimal policy, which can be synthesized by an efficient algorithm based on semi…
We consider three known bounds for the quadratic assignment problem (QAP): an eigenvalue, a convex quadratic programming (CQP), and a semidefinite programming (SDP) bound. Since the last two bounds were not compared directly before, we prove that the SDP bound is stronger than the CQP bound. We then apply these to improve known bounds on a discrete energy minimization problem, reformulated as a QAP, which aims to minimize the potential energy between repulsive particles on a toric grid. Thus we are able to prove optimality for several configurations of particles and grid sizes, complementing e…
Semidefinite programs (SDPs) often arise in relaxations of some NP-hard problems, and if the solution of the SDP obeys certain rank constraints, the relaxation will be tight. Decomposition methods based on chordal sparsity have already been applied to speed up the solution of sparse SDPs, but methods for dealing with rank constraints are underdeveloped. This paper leverages a minimum rank completion result to decompose the rank constraint on a single large matrix into multiple rank constraints on a set of smaller matrices. The re-weighted heuristic is used as a proxy for rank, and the specific…
The positive semidefinite (psd) rank of a polytope is the size of the smallest psd cone that admits an affine slice that projects linearly onto the polytope. The psd rank of a d-polytope is at least d+1, and when equality holds we say that the polytope is psd-minimal. In this paper we develop new tools for the study of psd-minimality and use them to give a complete classification of psd-minimal 4-polytopes. The main tools introduced are trinomial obstructions, a new algebraic obstruction for psd-minimality, and the slack ideal of a polytope, which encodes the space of realizations of a polytop…
In this paper, we address the Bounded Cardinality Hub Location Routing with Route Capacity wherein each hub acts as a transshipment node for one directed route. The number of hubs lies between a minimum and a maximum and the hub-level network is a complete subgraph. The transshipment operations take place at the hub nodes and flow transfer time from a hub-level transporter to a spoke-level vehicle influences spoke- to-hub allocations. We propose a mathematical model and a branch-and-cut algorithm based on Benders decomposition to solve the problem. To accelerate convergence, our solution frame…
It is well-known that the intersection of the matching polytope with a cardinality constraint is integral [8]. We prove a similar result for the polytope corresponding to the transportation problem with market choice (TPMC) (introduced in [4]) when the demands are in the set $\{1,2\}$. This result generalizes the result regarding the matching polytope and also implies that some special classes of minimum weight perfect matching problem with a cardinality constraint on a subset of edges can be solved in polynomial time.
We propose an algorithm for generating a minimum-cardinality set of non-anticipativity constraints (NAC) for scenario-based multistage-stochastic programming (MSSP) problems with both endogenous and exogenous uncertainties which allow for gradual realizations. Recently several authors have considered approaches to generate the minimum cardinality NAC set for MSSPs for various scenario set structures. However, these approaches have been limited to uncertain parameters where the realizations occur instantaneously or the full set of scenarios is required. The proposed algorithm, referred to as Sa…
We give a signed generalization of Laurent's theorem that characterizes feasible positive semidefinite matrix completion problems in terms of metric polytopes. Based on this result, we give a characterization of the maximum rank completions of the signed positive semidefinite matrix completion problem for odd-$K_4$ minor free signed graphs. The analysis can also be used to bound the minimum rank over the completions and to characterize uniquely solvable completion problems for odd-$K_4$ minor free signed graphs. As a corollary we derive a characterization of the universal rigidity of odd-$K_4$…
A cardinality-constrained portfolio caps the number of stocks to be traded across and within groups or sectors. These limitations arise from real-world scenarios faced by fund managers, who are constrained by transaction costs and client preferences as they seek to maximize return and limit risk. We develop a new approach to solve cardinality-constrained portfolio optimization problems, extending both Markowitz and conditional value at risk (CVaR) optimization models with cardinality constraints. We derive a continuous relaxation method for the NP-hard objective, which allows for very efficien…
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a graph without isolated vertices. A set $S\subseteq V$ is a paired-domination set if every vertex in $V-S$ is adjacent to a vertex in $S$ and the subgraph induced by $S$ contains a perfect matching. The paired-domination problem is to determine the paired-domination number, which is the minimum cardinality of a paired-dominating set. Motivated by a mistaken algorithm given by Chen, Kang and Ng [ Paired domination on interval and circular-arc graphs, Disc. Appl. Math. 155(2007),2077-2086], we present two linear time algorithms to find a minimum cardinality paired-dominating se…

Semidefinite programs (SDPs) are convex optimization programs with vast applications in control theory, quantum information, combinatorial optimization and operational research. Noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) algorithms aim to make an efficient use of the current generation of quantum hardware. However, optimizing variational quantum algorithms is a challenge as it is an NP-hard problem that in general requires an exponential time to solve and can contain many far from optimal local minima. Here, we present a current term NISQ algorithm for solving SDPs. The classical optimization pro…
