The category of von Neumann correspondences from B to C (or von Neumann B-C-modules) is dual to the category of von Neumann correspondences from C' to B' via a functor that generalizes naturally the functor that sends a von Neumann algebra to its commutant and back. Recently, M. Daws introduced a notion of co-representation of abelian Hopf--von Neumann algebras on general reflexive Banach spaces. In this note, we show that this notion cannot be extended beyond subhomogeneous Hopf--von Neumann algebras. We prove that the predual of any von Neumann algebra is $1$-Plichko, i.e., it has a countably $1$-norming Markushevich basis. This answers a question of the third author who proved the same for preduals of semifinite von Neumann algebras. As a corollary we obtain an easier proof of a result of U.~Haagerup that the predual of any von Neumann algebra enjoys the separable complementation property. We further prove that the self-adjoint part of the predual is $1$-Plichko as well.
In this paper we study three aspects of (P(M)/~), the set of Murray-von Neumann equivalence classes of projections in a von Neumann algebra M. First we determine the topological structure that (P(M)/~) inherits from the operator topologies on M. Then we show that there is a version of the center-valued trace which extends the dimension function, even when M is not sigma-finite. Finally we prove that (P(M)/~) is a complete lattice, a fact which has an interesting reformulation in terms of representations.

In particular, I will present the first results which provide classes of (superrigid) groups and actions that can be entirely reconstructed from their von Neumann algebras.
We introduce "embedding dimensions" of a family of generators of a finite von Neumann algebra when the von Neumann algebra can be faithfully embedded into the ultrapower of the hyperfinite II$_1$ factor. We survey some of the progress made recently in the classification of von Neumann algebras arising from countable groups and their measure preserving actions on probability spaces. Let N and M be von Neumann subalgebras of a von Neumann algebra with finite probabilistic index in the sense of Pimsner-Popa. If N and M are sufficiently close, then N and M are unitarily equivalent. The implementing unitary can be chosen as being close to the identity.

In this paper we describe the amalgamated free product of finite and semifinite hyperfinite von Neumann algebras over atomic type I subalgebras.
