QHI Theory, I: 3-Manifolds Scissors Congruence Classes and Quantum Hyperbolic Invariants

For any triple $(W,L,ρ)$, where W is a closed connected and oriented 3-manifold, L is a link in W and $ρ$ is a flat principal B-bundle over W (B is the Borel subgroup of $SL(2,\mc)$), one constructs a $\Dd$-scissors congruence class $\cG_{\Dd}(W,L,ρ)$ which belongs to a (pre)-Bloch group $\Pp (\Dd)$. The class $\cG_{\Dd}(W,L,ρ)$ may be represented by $\Dd$-triangulations $\Tt=(T,H,\Dd)$ of $(W,L,ρ)$. The Regge symmetry is a scissors congruence in hyperbolic space

We give a constructive proof that the Regge symmetry is a scissors congruence in hyperbolic space. The main tool is Leibon's construction for computing the volume of a general hyperbolic tetrahedron. The proof consists of identifying the key elements in Leibon's construction and permuting them.

Hilbert's 3rd Problem and invariants of 3-manifolds

This paper is an expansion of my lecture for David Epstein's birthday, which traced a logical progression from ideas of Euclid on subdividing polygons to some recent research on invariants of hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Algebraic invariants, mutation, and commensurability of link complements

We construct a family of hyperbolic link complements by gluing tangles along totally geodesic four-punctured spheres, then investigate the commensurability relation among its members. Those with different volume are incommensurable, distinguished by their scissors congruence classes. Mutation produces arbitrarily large finite subfamilies of nonisometric manifolds with the same volume and scissors congruence class. Cut and paste invariants of manifolds via algebraic K-theory

Recent work of Jonathan Campbell and Inna Zakharevich has focused on building machinery for studying scissors congruence problems via algebraic $K$-theory, and applying these tools to studying the Grothendieck ring of varieties. In this paper we give a new application of their framework: we construct a $K$-space that recovers the classical $\mathrm{SK}$ ("schneiden und kleben," German for "cut and paste") groups for manifolds on $π_0$, and we construct a derived version of the Euler characteristic.

Bloch invariants of hyperbolic 3-manifolds

We define an invariant β(M) of a finite volume hyperbolic 3-manifold M in the Bloch group B(C) and show it is determined by the simplex parameters of any degree one ideal triangulation of M. β(M) lies in a subgroup of \B(\C) of finite \Q-rank determined by the invariant trace field of M. Moreover, the Chern-Simons invariant of M is determined modulo rationals by β(M). This leads to a simplicial formula and rationality results for the Chern Simons invariant which appear elsewhere.
