Let $B$ denote the upper triangular subgroup of $SL_2(C)$, $T$ its diagonal torus and $U$ its unipotent radical. A complex projective variety $Y$ endowed with an algebraic action of $B$ such that the fixed point set $Y^U$ is a single point, is called regular. Associated to any regular $B$-variety $Y$, there is a remarkable affine curve $Z_Y$ with a $T$-action which was studied by the second author. In this note, we show that the coordinate ring of $Z_Y$ is isomorphic with the equivariant cohomology ring $H_T^*(Y)$ with complex coefficients, when $Y$ is smooth or, more generally, is a $B$-stable subvariety of a regular smooth $B$-variety $X$ such that the restriction map from $H^*(X)$ to $H^*(Y)$ is surjective. This isomorphism is obtained as a refinement of the localization theorem in equivariant cohomology; it applies e.g. to Schubert varieties in flag varieties, and to the Peterson variety studied by Kostant. Another application of our isomorphism is a natural algebraic formula for the equivariant push forward.
We describe the equivariant cohomology ring of rationally smooth projective embeddings of reductive groups. These embeddings are the projectivizations of reductive monoids. Our main result describes their equivariant cohomology in terms of roots, idempotents, and underlying monoid data. Also, we characterize those embeddings whose equivariant cohomology ring is obtained via restriction to the associated toric variety. Such characterization is given in terms of the closed orbits.
This paper provides an introduction to equivariant cohomology and homology using the approach of Goresky, Kottwitz, and MacPherson. When a group G acts suitably on a variety X, the equivariant cohomology of X can be computed using the combinatorial data of a skeleton of G-orbits on X. We give both a geometric definition and the traditional definition of equivariant cohomology. We include a discussion of the moment map and an algorithm for finding a set of generators for the equivariant cohomology of X. Many examples and explicit calculations are provided.
We introduce a Bredon motivic cohomology theory for smooth schemes defined over a field and equipped with an action by a finite group. These cohomology groups are defined for finite dimensional representations as the hypercohomology of complexes of equivariant correspondences in the equivariant Nisnevich topology. We generalize the theory of presheaves with transfers to the equivariant setting and prove a Cancellation Theorem.
We describe the integral equivariant cohomology ring of a weighted projective space in terms of piecewise polynomials, and thence by generators and relations. We deduce that the ring is a perfect invariant, and prove a Chern class formula for weighted projective bundles.
We obtain refined generating series formulae for equivariant characteristic classes of external and symmetric products of singular complex quasi-projective varieties. More concretely, we study equivariant versions of Todd, Chern and Hirzebruch classes for singular spaces, with values in delocalized Borel-Moore homology of external and symmetric products. As a byproduct, we recover our previous characteristic class formulae for symmetric products, and obtain new equivariant generalizations of these results, in particular also in the context of twisting by representations of the symmetric group.
For T an abelian compact Lie group, we give a description of T-equivariant K-theory with complex coefficients in terms of equivariant cohomology. In the appendix we give applications of this by extending results of Chang-Skjelbred and Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson from equivariant cohomology to equivariant K-theory.
We give a complete description of the bigraded Bredon cohomology ring of smooth projective real quadrics, with coefficients in the constant Mackey functor $ \mathbf{Z} $. These invariants are closely related to the integral motivic cohomology ring, which is not known for these varieties. Some of the results and techniques introduced can be applied to other geometrically cellular real varieties.
In this article we study the equivariant elliptic cohomology of complex toric varieties. We prove a partial reconstruction theorem showing that equivariant elliptic cohomology encodes considerable non-trivial information on the equivariant 1-skeleton of a toric variety X (although it stops short of being a complete invariant of its GKM graphs). Elliptic cohomology is supposed to encode higher categorical geometric data, and proposals have been made linking elliptic cocycles to categorified bundles. In particular, contrary to ordinary cohomology and K-theory, elliptic cohomology is expected not…
We obtain an explicit presentation of the equivariant cobordism ring of a complete flag variety. An immediate corollary is a Borel presentation of the ordinary cobordism ring. Another application is an equivariant Schubert calculus in cobordism. We also describe the rational cobordism rings of wonderful symmetric varieties of minimal rank.
For a complete toric variety, we obtain an explicit formula for the localized equivariant Todd class in terms of the combinatorial data -- the fan. This is based on the equivariant Riemann-Roch theorem and the computation of the equivariant cohomology and equivariant homology of toric varieties.
The paper is based on a talk. Complete exposition is given in "Equivariant Hirzebruch class for singular varieties". Starting from the classical theory we describe Hirzebruch class and the related Todd genus of a complex singular algebraic varieties. When the variety is equipped with an action of an algebraic torus we localize the Hirzebruch class at the fixed points of the action. We give some examples of computations.
The main result of this note is a Giambelli formula for the Peterson Schubert classes in the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of a type $A$ Peterson variety. Our results depend on the Monk formula for the equivariant structure constants for the Peterson Schubert classes derived by Harada and Tymoczko. In addition, we give proofs of two facts observed by H. Naruse: firstly, that some constants which appear in the multiplicative structure of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties are Stirling numbers of the second kind, and secondly, that the Peterson Schubert classes satisfy a …
We study the equivariant cobordism rings for the action of a torus $T$ on smooth varieties over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove a theorem describing the rational $T$-equivariant cobordism rings of smooth projective $G$-spherical varieties with the action of a maximal torus $T$ of $G$. As an application, we obtain explicit presentations for the rational equivariant cobordism rings of smooth projective horospherical varieties of Picard number one.
We construct a cocycle model for complex analytic equivariant elliptic cohomology that refines Grojnowski's theory when the group is connected and Devoto's when the group is finite. We then construct Mathai--Quillen type cocycles for equivariant elliptic Euler and Thom classes, explaining how these are related to positive energy representations of loop groups. Finally, we show that these classes give a unique equivariant refinement of Hopkins' "theorem of the cube" construction of the ${\rm MString}$-orientation of elliptic cohomology.
We compute rational $T$-equivariant elliptic cohomology of CP(V), where $T$ is the circle group, and CP(V) is the $T$-space of complex lines for a finite dimensional complex $T$-representation V. Starting from an elliptic curve C over the complex numbers and a coordinate data around the identity, we achieve this computation by proving that the $T$-equivariant elliptic cohomology theory $EC_T$ built in [Gre05], and the $T^2$-equivariant elliptic cohomology theory $EC_{T^2}$ built in [Bar22] are 1x$T$-split. This result allows us to reduce the computation of $EC_T(CP(V))$ to the computation of $…
We show that the equivariant Chow cohomology ring of a toric variety is naturally isomorphic to the ring of integral piecewise polynomial functions on the associated fan. This gives a large class of singular spaces for which localization holds in equivariant Chow cohomology with integer coefficients. We also compute the equivariant Chow cohomology of toric prevarieties and general complex hypertoric varieties in terms of piecewise polynomial functions.
This expository note surveys some results on equivariant K-theory of varieties with a torus action, focusing on recent work with Sam Payne and Richard Gonzales. It is based on my contribution to the Clifford Lectures at Tulane University in March 2015.
In this paper, we study the T_w-equivariant cohomology of the weighted Grassmannians wGr(d,n) introduced by Corti-Reid where T_w is the n-dimensional torus that naturally acts on wGr(d,n). We introduce the equivariant weighted Schubert classes and, after we show that they form a basis of the equivariant cohomology, we give an explicit formula for the structure constants with respect to this Schubert basis. We also find a linearly independent subset {wu_1,...,wu_n} of Lie(T_w)^* such that those structure constants are polynomials in wu_i's with non-negative coefficients, up to a permutation on …
We characterize embeddability of algebraic varieties into smooth toric varieties and prevarieties. Our embedding results hold also in an equivariant context and thus generalize a well known embedding theorem of Sumihiro on quasiprojective G-varieties. The main idea is to reduce the embedding problem to the affine case. This is done by constructing equivariant affine conoids, a tool which extends the concept of an equivariant affine cone over a projective G-variety to a more general framework.
This text is an introduction to equivariant cohomology, a classical tool for topological transformation groups, and to equivariant intersection theory, a much more recent topic initiated by D. Edidin and W. Graham. It is based on lectures given at Montréal is Summer 1997. Our main aim is to obtain explicit descriptions of cohomology or Chow rings of certain manifolds with group actions which arise in representation theory, e.g. homogeneous spaces and their compactifications. As another appplication of equivariant intersection theory, we obtain simple versions of criteria for smoothness or rati…
We present several approaches to equivariant intersection cohomology. We show that for a complete algebraic variety acted by a connected algebraic group $G$ it is a free module over $H^*(BG)$. The result follows from the decomposition theorem or from a weight argument.
We construct a basis of the equivariant $K$-theory of Bott towers, and we describe precisely the multiplicative structure of these algebras. We deduce similar results for Bott-Samelson varieties. Thanks to the link between flag varieties and Bott-Samelson varieties, we give a method to compute the structure constants of the equivariant $K$-theory of flag varieties in the basis constructed by Kostant and Kumar.
In this expository article we give a categorical definition of the integral cohomology ring of a stack. We show that for quotient stacks the categorical cohomology may be identified with equivariant cohomology. Via this identification we show that for Deligne-Mumford quotient stacks this cohomology is rationally isomorphic to the rational cohomology of the coarse moduli space. The theory is presented with a focus on the stacks of smooth and stable curves.
The aim of this paper is to put some recent results of Huang-Pandzic (conjectured by Vogan) and Kostant on Dirac cohomology in a broader perspective. This is achieved by introducing an induction functor in the noncommutative equivariant cohomology. In this context, the results of Huang-Pandzic and Kostant are interpreted as special cases (corresponding to the manifold being a point) of more general results on noncommutative equivariant cohomology introduced by Alekseev-Meinrenken.
We present a new geometric interpretation of equivariant cohomology in which one replaces a smooth, complex $G$-variety $X$ by its associated arc space $J_{\infty} X$, with its induced $G$-action. This not only allows us to obtain geometric classes in equivariant cohomology of arbitrarily high degree, but also provides more flexibility for equivariantly deforming classes and geometrically interpreting multiplication in the equivariant cohomology ring. Under appropriate hypotheses, we obtain explicit bijections between $\mathbb{Z}$-bases for the equivariant cohomology rings of smooth varieties …
We construct shift operators on equivariant symplectic cohomology which generalise the shift operators on equivariant quantum cohomology in algebraic geometry. That is, given a Hamiltonian action of the torus $T$, we assign to a cocharacter of $T$ an endomorphism of $(S^1 \times T)$-equivariant Floer cohomology based on the equivariant Floer Seidel map. We prove the shift operator commutes with a connection. This connection is a multivariate version of Seidel's $q$-connection on $S^1$-equivariant Floer cohomology and generalises the Dubrovin connection on equivariant quantum cohomology. We pro…
We give positive formulas for the restriction of a Schubert Class to a T-fixed point in the equivariant K-theory and equivariant cohomology of the Lagrangian Grassmannian. Our formulas rely on a result of Ghorpade-Raghavan, which gives an equivariant Grobner degeneration of a Schubert variety in the neighborhood of a T-fixed point of the Lagrangian Grassmannian.
Billey and Braden defined a geometric pattern map on flag manifolds which extends the generalized pattern map of Billey and Postnikov on Weyl groups. The interaction of this torus equivariant map with the Bruhat order and its action on line bundles lead to formulas for its pullback on the equivariant cohomology ring and on equivariant K-theory. These formulas are in terms of the Borel presentation, the basis of Schubert classes, and localization at torus fixed points.
We classify holomorphic as well as algebraic torus equivariant principal $G$-bundles over a nonsingular toric variety $X$, where $G$ is a complex linear algebraic group. It is shown that any such bundle over an affine, nonsingular toric variety admits a trivialization in equivariant sense. We also obtain some splitting results.
We construct the equivariant analytic lattice cohomology associated with the analytic type of a complex normal surface singularity whenever the link is a rational homology sphere. It is the categorification of the equivariant geometric genus of the germ. This is the analytic analogue of the topological lattice cohomology, associated with the link of the germ, and indexed by the spin$^c$--structures of the link (which is a categorification of the Seiberg--Witten invariant and conjecturally it is isomorphic with the Heegaard Floer cohomology).
For a complex smooth projective surface $M$ with an action of a finite cyclic group $G$ we give a uniform proof of the isomorphism between the invariant $H^1(G, H^2(M, {\mathbb Z}))$ and the first cohomology of the divisors fixed by the action, using $G$-equivariant cohomology. This generalizes the main result of Bogomolov and Prokhorov "On stable conjugacy of finite subgroups of the plane Cremona group, I".
Springer fibers are subvarieties of the flag variety that play an important role in combinatorics and geometric representation theory. In this paper, we analyze the equivariant cohomology of Springer fibers for $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$ using results of Kumar and Procesi that describe this equivariant cohomology as a quotient ring. We define a basis for the equivariant cohomology of a Springer fiber, generalizing a monomial basis of the ordinary cohomology defined by De Concini and Procesi and studied by Garsia and Procesi. Our construction yields a combinatorial framework with which to study the equ…
We derive a version of the Rothenberg-Steenrod, fiber-to-base, spectral sequence for cohomology theories represented in model categories of simplicial presheaves. We then apply this spectral sequence to calculate the equivariant motivic cohomology of the general linear group with a general Gm-action, this coincides with the equivariant higher Chow groups. Some of the equivariant motivic cohomology of a Stiefel variety with a general Gm-action is deduced as a corollary.
We discuss the Hochschild cohomology of the category of D-modules associated to an algebraic stack. In particular we describe the Hochschild cohomology of the category of torus-equivariant D-modules as the cohomology of a D-module on the loop space of the quotient stack. Finally, we give an approach for understanding the Hochschild cohomology of D-modules on general stacks via a relative compactification of the diagonal. This work is motivated by a desire to understand the support theory (in the sense of Benson-Iyengar-Krause) of D-modules on stacks.
We give positive formulas for the restriction of a Schubert Class to a T-fixed point in the equivariant K-theory and equivariant cohomology of the Grassmannian. Our formulas rely on a result of Kodiyalam-Raghavan and Kreiman-Lakshmibai, which gives an equivariant Grobner degeneration of a Schubert variety in the neighborhood of a T-fixed point of the Grassmannian.
We prove that the only rational homogeneous varieties with Picard number 1 of the exceptional algebraic groups admitting irreducible equivariant Ulrich vector bundles are the Cayley plane $E_6/P_1$ and the $E_7$-adjoint variety $E_7/P_1$. From this result, we see that a general hyperplane section $F_4/P_4$ of the Cayley plane also has an equivariant but non-irreducible Ulrich bundle.
We find presentations by generators and relations for the equivariant quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian. For these presentations, we also find determinantal formulae for the equivariant quantum Schubert classes. To prove this, we use the theory of factorial Schur functions and a characterization of the equivariant quantum cohomology ring.
These are lecture notes from the IMPANGA 2010 Summer School. The lectures survey some of the main features of equivariant cohomology at an introductory level. The first part is an overview, including basic definitions and examples. In the second lecture, I discuss one of the most useful aspects of the theory: the possibility of localizing at fixed points without losing information. The third lecture focuses on Grassmannians, and describes some recent positivity results about their equivariant cohomology rings.
Let G be a semisimple affine algebraic group and P a parabolic subgroup of G. We classify all flag varieties G/P which admit an action of the commutative unipotent group G_a^n with an open orbit.
We show the existence of an equivariant weight filtration on the equivariant homology of real algebraic varieties equipped with a finite group action, by applying group homology onto the weight complex of McCrory and Parusiński. The group action enriches the information contained in the induced equivariant weight spectral sequence from which we can not extract finite additivity directly if the group is of even order. Still, we manage to construct additive invariants from its elementary bricks, and prove that they are induced from the very equivariant geometry of real algebraic varieties with a…
We give a concrete description of the category of G-equivariant vector bundles on certain affine G-varieties (where G is a reductive linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0) in terms of linear algebra data.
In this paper, we define an action of the group of equivariant Cartier divisors on a toric variety X on the equivariant cycle groups of X, arising naturally from a choice of complement map on the underlying lattice. If X is nonsingular, this gives a lifting of the multiplication in equivariant cohomology to the level of equivariant cycles. As a consequence, one naturally obtains an equivariant cycle representative of the equivariant Todd class of any toric variety. These results extend to equivariant cohomology the results of Thomas and Pommersheim. In the case of a complement map arising from…
Let X be a T-variety, where T is an algebraic torus. We describe a fully faithful functor from the category of T-equivariant vector bundles on X to a certain category of filtered vector bundles on a suitable quotient of X by T. We show that if X is factorial, this functor gives an equivalence of categories. This generalizes Klyachko's description of equivariant vector bundles on toric varieties. We apply our machinery to show that vector bundles of low rank on projective space which are equivariant with respect to special subtori of the maximal torus must split, generalizing a theorem of Kaney…
We describe categories of equivariant vector bundles on certain toroidal spherical varieties in linear algebra terms: vector spaces equipped with filtrations, group and Lie algebra actions, and linear maps preserving these structures.
In this note we derive a formalism for describing equivariant sheaves over toric varieties. This formalism is a generalization of a correspondence due to Klyachko, which states that equivariant vector bundles on toric varieties are equivalent to certain sets of filtrations of vector spaces. We systematically construct the theory from the point of view of graded ring theory and this way we clarify earlier constructions of Kaneyama and Klyachko. We also connect the formalism to the theory of fine-graded modules over Cox' homogeneous coordinate ring of a toric variety. As an application we constr…
We identify a certain universal Landau-Ginzburg model as a mirror of the big equivariant quantum cohomology of a (not necessarily compact or semipositive) toric manifold. The mirror map and the primitive form are constructed via Seidel elements and shift operators for equivariant quantum cohomology. Primitive forms in non-equivariant theory are identified up to automorphisms of the mirror.
We prove a Chevalley formula for the equivariant quantum multiplication of two Schubert classes in the homogeneous variety X=G/P. As in the case when X is a Grassmannian, studied by the author in a previous paper, this formula implies an effective algorithm to compute the structure constants of the equivariant quantum cohomology algebra of X.
This paper contains two results concerning the equivariant K-theory of toric varieties. The first is a formula for the equivariant K-groups of an arbitrary affine toric variety, generalizing the known formula for smooth ones. In fact, this result is established in a more general context, involving the K-theory of graded projective modules. The second result is a new proof of a theorem due to Vezzosi and Vistoli concerning the equivariant K-theory of smooth (not necessarily affine) toric varieties.
