We prove that generically (positive) Yamabe metrics are unique in their conformal class, and describe some sufficient conditions which imply that a Yamabe metric of locally maximal scalar curvature is an Einstein metric.
We prove that in conformal classes of metrics near the class of an Einstein metric (other than the standard round metric on a sphere) the Yamabe problem has a unique solution up to scaling. This is a local extension, in the space of conformal classes, of a well-known uniqueness criterion due to Obata.
We define a new formal Riemannian metric on a conformal classes of four-manifolds in the context of the $σ_2$-Yamabe problem. Exploiting this new variational structure we show that solutions are unique unless the manifold is conformally equivalent to the round sphere.
We report on some aspects and recent progress in certain problems in the sub-Riemannian CR and quaternionic contact (QC) geometries. The focus are the corresponding Yamabe problems on the round spheres, the Lichnerowicz-Obata first eigenvalue estimates, and the relation between these two problems. A motivation from the Riemannian case highlights new and old ideas which are then developed in the settings of Iwasawa sub-Riemannian geometries.
For a given finite subset $S$ of a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ whose Schouten curvature tensor belongs to a given cone, we establish a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence and uniqueness of a conformal metric on $M \setminus S$ such that each point of $S$ corresponds to an asymptotically flat end and that the Schouten tensor of the conformal metric belongs to the boundary of the given cone. As a by-product, we define a purely local notion of Ricci lower bounds for continuous metrics which are conformal to smooth metrics and prove a corresponding volume comparison theore…
We consider asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds whose metrics have Sobolev-class regularity, and introduce several technical tools for studying PDEs on such manifolds. Our results employ two novel families of function spaces suitable for metrics potentially having a large amount of interior differentiability, but whose Sobolev regularity implies only a Hölder continuous conformal structure at infinity. We establish Fredholm theorems for elliptic operators arising from metrics in these families. To demonstrate the utility of our methods, we solve the Yamabe problem in this category. As a specia…
Let $(M^n,g,e^{-ϕ}dV_g,e^{-ϕ}dA_g,m)$ be a compact smooth metric measure space with boundary with $n\geqslant 3$. In this article, we consider several Yamabe-type problems on a compact smooth metric measure space with or without boundary: uniqueness problem on the weighted Yamabe problem with boundary, characterization of the weighted Yamabe solitons with boundary and the existence of positive minimizers in the weighted Escobar quotient.
We study local rigidity and multiplicity of constant scalar curvature metrics in arbitrary products of compact manifolds. Using (equivariant) bifurcation theory we determine the existence of infinitely many metrics that are accumulation points of pairwise non homothetic solutions of the Yamabe problem. Using local rigidity and some compactness results for solutions of the Yamabe problem, we also exhibit new examples of conformal classes (with positive Yamabe constant) for which uniqueness holds.
We apply scattering theory on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds to singular Yamabe metrics, applying the results to the study of the conformal geometry of compact manifolds with boundary. In particular, we define extrinsic versions of the conformally invariant powers of the Laplacian, or GJMS operators, on the boundary of any such manifold, along with associated extrinsic Q-curvatures. We use the existence and uniqueness of a singular Yamabe metric to define also nonlocal extrinsic fractional GJMS operators on the boundary, and draw other global conclusions about the scattering operator, inc…
We study the H^n-Yamabe constants of Riemannian products (H^n \times M^m, g_h^n +g), where (M,g) is a compact Riemannian manifold of constant scalar curvature and g_h^n is the hyperbolic metric on H^n. Numerical calculations can be carried out due to the uniqueness of (positive, finite energy) solutions of the equation Δu -λu + u^q =0 on hyperbolic space H^n under appropriate bounds on the parameters λ, q, as shown by G. Mancini and K. Sandeep. We do explicit numerical estimates in the cases (n,m)=(2,2),(2,3) and (3,2).
We initiate the study of an analogue of the Yamabe problem for complex manifolds. More precisely, fixed a conformal Hermitian structure on a compact complex manifold, we are concerned in the existence of metrics with constant Chern scalar curvature. In this note, we set the problem and we provide a positive answer when the expected constant Chern scalar curvature is non-positive. In particular, this includes the case when the Kodaira dimension of the manifold is non-negative. Finally, we give some remarks on the positive curvature case, showing existence in some special cases and the failure, …
The Gursky-Streets equation are introduced as the geodesic equation of a metric structure in conformal geometry. This geometric structure has played a substantial role in the proof of uniqueness of $σ_2$ Yamabe problem in dimension four. In this paper we solve the Gursky-Streets equations with uniform $C^{1, 1}$ estimates for $2k\leq n$. An important new ingredient is to show the concavity of the operator which holds for all $k\leq n$. Our proof of the concavity heavily relies on Garding's theory of hyperbolic polynomials and results from the theory of real roots for (interlacing) polynomials.…
In the first part of this thesis, we study the Yamabe problem with singularities, that we can announce as follow: Given a compact Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$, find a constant scalar curvature metric, conformal to $g$, when $g$ has not necessarily the usual regularity (it can be $C^1$). To solve this problem, we start the study of the Yamabe type equations. We show that all the known properties in the smooth case are still valid. Under some assumptions, we prove the existence and uniqueness of solutions. The second part is dedicated to the Hebey-Vaugon conjecture, stated in their paper about th…
We study two natural problems concerning the scalar and the Ricci curvatures of the Bismut connection. Firstly, we study an analog of the Yamabe problem for Hermitian manifolds related to the Bismut scalar curvature, proving that, fixed a conformal Hermitian structure on a compact complex manifold, there exists a metric with constant Bismut scalar curvature in that class when the expected constant scalar curvature is non-negative. A similar result is given in the general case of Gauduchon connections. We then study an Einstein-type condition for the Bismut Ricci curvature tensor on principal b…
We give a survey of our recent work describing a method which combines the Sasaki join construction with the admissible Kähler construction of to obtain new extremal and new constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics, including Sasaki-Einstein metrics. The constant scalar curvature Sasaki metrics also provide explicit solutions to the CR Yamabe problem. In this regard we give examples of the lack of uniqueness when the Yamabe invariant is positive.
In this paper we show that for a Berger metric $\hat{g}$ on $S^3$, the non-positively curved conformally compact Einstein metric on the $4$-ball $B_1(0)$ with $(S^3, [\hat{g}])$ as its conformal infinity is unique up to isometries and it is the metric constructed by Pedersen \cite{Pedersen}. In particular, since in \cite{LiQingShi}, we proved that if the Yamabe constant of the conformal infinity $Y(S^3, [\hat{g}])$ is close to that of the round sphere then any conformally compact Einstein manifold filled in must be negatively curved and simply connected, therefore if $\hat{g}$ is a Berger metr…
Gursky-Streets introduced a formal Riemannian metric on the space of conformal metrics in a fixed conformal class of a compact Riemannian four-manifold in the context of the $σ_2$-Yamabe problem. The geodesic equation of Gursky-Streets' metric is a fully nonlinear degenerate elliptic equation and Gursky-Streets have proved uniform $C^{0, 1}$ regularity for a perturbed equation. Gursky-Streets apply the results and parabolic smoothing of Guan-Wang flow to show that the solution of $σ_2$-Yamabe problem is unique. A key ingredient is the convexity of Chang-Yang's $\cF$-functional along the (smoot…
The conformal method has been effective for parametrizing solutions to the Einstein constraint equations on closed 3-manifolds. However, it is still not well-understood; for example, existence of solutions to the conformal equations for zero or negative Yamabe metrics is still unknown without the so-called ``CMC'' or ``near-CMC'' assumptions. The first existence results without such assumptions, termed the ``far-from-CMC'' case, were obtained by Holst, Nagy, and Tsogtgerel in 2008 for positive Yamabe metrics. However, their results are based on topological arguments, and as a result solution u…
In this paper we show that for a generalized Berger metric $\hat{g}$ on $S^3$ close to the round metric, the conformally compact Einstein (CCE) manifold $(M, g)$ with $(S^3, [\hat{g}])$ as its conformal infinity is unique up to isometries. For the high-dimensional case, we show that if $\hat{g}$ is an $\text{SU}(k+1)$-invariant metric on $S^{2k+1}$ for $k\geq1$, the non-positively curved CCE metric on the $(2k+1)$-ball $B_1(0)$ with $(S^{2k+1}, [\hat{g}])$ as its conformal infinity is unique up to isometries. In particular, since in \cite{LiQingShi}, we proved that if the Yamabe constant of th…
Let $g_0$ be a smooth Riemannian metric on a closed manifold $M^n$ of dimension $n\geq 3$. We study the existence of a smooth metric $g$ conformal to $g_0$ whose Schouten tensor $A_g$ satisfies the differential inclusion $λ(g^{-1}A_g)\inΓ$ on $M^n$, where $Γ\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ is a cone satisfying standard assumptions. Inclusions of this type are often assumed in the existence theory for fully nonlinear elliptic equations in conformal geometry. We assume the existence of a continuous metric $g_1$ conformal to $g_0$ satisfying $λ(g_1^{-1}A_{g_1})\in\bar{Γ'}$ in the viscosity sense on $M^n$, to…
