Our results are of three types. First we describe a general procedure of adjoining polynomial variables to $A_\infty$-ring spectra whose coefficient rings satisfy certain restrictions.A host of examples of such spectra is provided by killing a regular ideal in the coefficient ring of MU, the complex cobordism spectrum. Second, we show that the algebraic procedure of adjoining roots of unity carries over in the topological context for such spectra. Third, we use the developed technology to compute the homotopy types of spaces of strictly multiplicative maps between suitable K(n)-localizations of such spectra. This generalizes the famous Hopkins-Miller theorem and gives strengthened versions of various splitting theorems.

Topological modular forms (aftern Hopkins, Miller, and Lurie)

This is the companion article to the Bourbaki talk of the same name given in March 2009. The main theme of the talk and the article is to explain the interplay between homotopy theory and algebraic geometry through the Hopkins-Miller-Lurie theorem on topological modular forms, from which we learn that the Deligne-Mumford moduli stack for elliptic curves is canonically realized as an object in derived algebraic geometry.

An equivariant generalization of the Miller splitting theorem

Let G be a compact Lie group. We build a tower of G-spectra over the suspension spectrum of the space of linear isometries from one G-representation to another. The stable cofibres of the maps running down the tower are certain interesting Thom spaces. The equivariant stable homotopy theory around isometric linear maps

The non-equivariant topology of Stiefel manifolds has been studied extensively, culminating in a result of Miller demonstrating that a Stiefel manifold splits stably to a wedge of Thom spaces over Grassmannians. Chromatic completion

We study the limit of the chromatic tower for not necessarily finite spectra, obtaining a generalization of the chromatic convergence theorem of Hopkins and Ravenel. Moreover, we prove that in general this limit does not coincide with harmonic localization, thereby answering a question of Ravenel's.

Strict units of commutative ring spectra

We provide computational tools to calculate the strict units of commutative ring spectra. We describe the Goerss-Hopkins-Miller spectral sequence for computing strict units of $E_\infty$-$H\mathbb{F}_p$-algebras, and use it to compute the strict units of polynomial and truncated polynomial rings, whose Postnikov towers we also analyze. We then sketch the calculation of the strict units of other rings, such as $S^0$, using the symmetric product of spheres filtration and transfers.

Structured ring spectra and displays

We combine Lurie's generalization of the Hopkins-Miller theorem with work of Zink-Lau on displays to give a functorial construction of even-periodic commutative ring spectra, concentrated in chromatic layers 2 and above, associated to certain n by n invertible matrices with coefficients in Witt rings. This is applied to examples related to Lubin-Tate and Johnson-Wilson spectra. We also give a Hopf algebroid presentation of the moduli of p-divisible groups of height greater than or equal to 2.

Commutative ring objects in pro-categories and generalized Moore spectra

We develop a rigidity criterion to show that in simplicial model categories with a compatible symmetric monoidal structure, operad structures can be automatically lifted along certain maps. This is applied to obtain an unpublished result of M. J. Topological Equivalences of E-infinity Differential Graded Algebras

Two DGAs are called topologically equivalent if the corresponding Eilenberg-Mac Lane ring spectra are weakly equivalent as ring spectra. Galois extensions of structured ring spectra

We introduce the notion of a Galois extension of commutative S-algebras (E_infty ring spectra), often localized with respect to a fixed homology theory. There are numerous examples, including some involving Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectra of commutative rings, real and complex topological K-theory, Lubin-Tate spectra and cochain S-algebras. Homotopy completion and topological Quillen homology of structured ring spectra

Working in the context of symmetric spectra, we describe and study a homotopy completion tower for algebras and left modules over operads in the category of modules over a commutative ring spectrum (e.g., structured ring spectra).
