The main object of study in this paper is the completion Z[q]^N=\varprojlim_n Z[q]/((1-q)(1-q^2)...(1-q^n)) of the polynomial ring Z[q], which arises from the study of a new invariant of integral homology 3-spheres with values in Z[q]^N announced by the author, which unifies all the sl_2 Witten-Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants at various roots of unity. We show that any element of Z[q]^N is uniquely determined by its power series expansion in q-ζfor each root ζof unity. We also show that any element of Z[q]^N is uniquely determined by its values at the roots of unity. These results may be interpreted that Z[q]^N behaves like a ring of ``holomorphic functions defined on the set of the roots of unity''. We will also study the generalizations of Z[q]^N, which are completions of the polynomial ring R[q] over a commutative ring R with unit with respect to the linear topologies defined by the principal ideals generated by products of powers of cyclotomic polynomials.
Let $k[X]=k[x_0,...,x_{n-1}]$ and $k[Y]=k[y_0,...,y_{n-1}]$ be the polynomial rings in $n\geqslant 3$ variables over a field $k$ of characteristic zero containing the $n$-th roots of unity. Let $d$ be the cyclotomic derivation of $k[X]$, and let $Δ$ be the factorisable derivation of $k[Y]$ associated with $d$, that is, $d(x_j)=x_{j+1}$ and $Δ(y_j)=y_j(y_{j+1}-y_j)$ for all $j\in\mathbb Z_n$. We describe polynomial constants and rational constants of these derivations. We prove, among others, that the field of constants of $d$ is a field of rational functions over $k$ in $n-\f(n)$ variables, an…
We characterize which complete local (Noetherian) rings T containing the rationals are the completion of a countable excellent local ring S. We also discuss the possibilities for the map from the minimal prime ideals of T to the minimal prime ideals of S and we prove some characterization-style results.
We find necessary and sufficient conditions for a complete local (Noetherian) ring to be the completion of an uncountable local (Noetherian) domain with a countable spectrum. Our results suggest that uncountable local domains with countable spectra are more common than previously thought. We also characterize completions of uncountable excellent local domains with countable spectra assuming the completion contains the rationals, completions of uncountable local unique factorization domains with countable spectra, completions of uncountable noncatenary local domains with countable spectra, and …
The classical lemma of Borel reads: any power series with real coefficients is the Taylor series of a smooth function. Algebraically this means the surjectivity of the completion map at a point, $C^\infty(\Bbb{R}^n) \twoheadrightarrow \Bbb{R}[[\underline{x}]]$. Similarly, Whitney extension theorem implies the surjectivity of the completion at closed subsets of $\Bbb{R}^n$. For various applications one needs the surjectivity of completion for general $C^\infty$-rings and general filtrations. We establish the necessary and sufficient conditions for this surjectivity. Moreover, we prove: any elem…
In this paper, we give a detailed proof to a result of Gabber (unpublished) on the lifting problem of quasi-excellent rings, extending the previous work on Nishimura-Nishimura. As a corollary, we establish that an ideal-adic completion of an excellent (resp. quasi-excellent) ring is excellent (resp. quasi-excellent).
Let A be a noetherian commutative ring, and let I be an ideal in A. We study questions of flatness and I-adic completeness for infinitely generated A-modules. This is done using the notions of decaying function and I-adically free A-module.
Let k be a field of characteristic zero, K an algebraic function field over k, and V a k-valuation ring of K. Zariski's theorem of local uniformization shows that there exist algebraic regular local rings R_i with quotient field K which are dominated by V, and such that the direct union of the R_i's is V. We investigate the ring T, which is the direct union of the completions of the R_i's. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for T to be a valuation ring. We then focus on the case in which the valuation has rank one.
In this paper, we construct a local ring $A$ such that the kernel of the map $G_0(A)\subq \to G_0(\hat{A})\subq$ is not zero, where $\hat{A}$ is the comletion of $A$ with respect to the maximal ideal, and $G_0()\subq$ is the Grothendieck group of finitely generated modules with rational coefficient. In our example, $A$ is a two-dimensional local ring which is essentially of finite type over ${\Bbb C}$, but it is not normal.
We show that if $R$ is a local domain which is dominated by a valuation $ν$, then there does not always exist a regular local ring $R'$ which birationally dominates R and is dominated by $ν$ and an extension of $ν$ to the Henselization $(R')^h$ of $R'$ such that the associated graded rings of $R'$ and $(R')^h$ along the valuations are equal. We also show that there does not always exist $R'$, a prime ideal $p$ of the completion $\widehat{R'}$ such that $p\cap R'=(0)$ and an extension of $ν$ to $\widehat{R'}$ such that the associated graded rings of $R'$ and $\widehat{R'}/p$ along the valuation…
Let $M$ denote a finitely generated module over a Noetherian ring $R$. For an ideal $I \subset R$ there is a study of the endomorphisms of the local cohomology module $H^g_I(M), g = \operatorname{grade} (I,M),$ and related results. Another subject is the study of left derived functors of the $I$-adic completion $Λ^I_i(H^g_I(M))$, motivated by a characterization of Gorenstein rings given in the book by Simon and the author. This provides another Cohen-Macaulay criterion. The results are illustrated by several examples. There is also an extension to the case of homomorphisms of two different loc…
Let $\operatorname{CDG}_{cont}$ be the category whose objects are pairs $(A,\bar{\mathfrak{a}})$, where $A$ is a commutative DG-algebra and $\bar{\mathfrak{a}}\subseteq \mathrm{H}^0(A)$ is a finitely generated ideal, and whose morphisms $f:(A,\bar{\mathfrak{a}}) \to (B,\bar{\mathfrak{b}})$ are morphisms of DG-algebras $A \to B$, such that $(\mathrm{H}^0(f)(\bar{\mathfrak{a}})) \subseteq \bar{\mathfrak{b}}$. Letting $\mathrm{Ho}(\operatorname{CDG}_{cont})$ be its homotopy category, obtained by inverting adic quasi-isomorphisms, we construct a functor $\mathrm{L}Λ:\mathrm{Ho}(\operatorname{CDG}_…
Let $A$ be a $d$-dimensional local ring containing a field. We will prove that the highest Lyubeznik number $λ_{d,d}(A)$ (defined in \cite{l1}) is equal to the number of connected components of the Hochster-Huneke graph (defined in \cite{hh}) associated to $B$, where $B=\hat{\hat{A}^{sh}}$ is the completion of the strict Henselization of the completion of $A$. This was proven by Lyubeznik in characteristic $p>0$. Our statement and proof are characteristic-free.
This paper has two parts. In the first part we recall the important role that weak proregularity of an ideal in a commutative ring has in derived completion and in adic flatness. We also introduce the new concepts of idealistic and sequential derived completion, and prove a few results about them, including the fact that these two concepts agree iff the ideal is weakly proregular. In the second part we study the local nature of weak proregularity, and its behavior w.r.t. ring quotients. These results allow us to prove that weak proregularity occurs in the context of bounded prisms, in the sens…
For a flat commutative $k$-algebra $A$ such that the enveloping algebra $A\otimes_k A$ is noetherian, given a finitely generated bimodule $M$, we show that the adic completion of the Hochschild cohomology module $HH^n(A/k,M)$ is naturally isomorphic to $HH^n(\widehat{A}/k,\widehat{M})$. To show this, we (1) make a detailed study of derived completion as a functor $D(A) \to D(\widehat{A})$ over a non-noetherian ring $A$; (2) prove a flat base change result for weakly proregular ideals; and (3) Prove that Hochschild cohomology and analytic Hochschild cohomology of complete noetherian local rings…
