Given a local domain $(R,m)$ of prime characteristic that is a homomorphic image of a Gorenstein ring, Huneke and Lyubeznik proved that there exists a module-finite extension domain $S$ such that the induced map on local cohomology modules $H^i_m(R)\to H^i_m(S)$ is zero for each $i<\dim R$. We prove that the extension $S$ may be chosen to be generically Galois, and analyze the Galois groups that arise.

Fiber cones of 0-dimensional ideals with almost minimal multiplicity in Cohen-Macaulay local rings are studied. Ratliff-Rush closure of filtration of ideals with respect to another ideal is introduced. This is used to find a bound on the reduction number with respect to an ideal. Rossi's bound on reduction number in terms of Hilbert coefficients is obtained as a consequence. Sufficient conditions are provided for the fiber cone of 0-dimensional ideals to have almost maximal depth. Hilbert series of such fiber cones are also computed.
We give short, closure-theoretic proofs for uniform bounds on the growth of symbolic powers of ideals in regular rings. The author recently proved these bounds in mixed characteristic using various versions of perfectoid/big Cohen-Macaulay test ideals, with special cases obtained earlier by Ma and Schwede. We look at how the equivalence of tight closure and plus closure (or Frobenius closure) in the homogeneous m-coprimary case implies the same closure equivalence in the non-homogeneous m-coprimary case in standard graded rings. Although our result does not depend upon dimension, the primary application is based on results known in dimension 2 due to the recent results of H. Brenner. We also show that unlike the Noetherian case, the injective hull of the residue field over $R^+$ or $R^\infty$ contains elements that are not killed by any power of the maximal ideal of R.

We study the algebraic closure of $\mathbb K(\!(x)\!)$, the field of power series in several indeterminates over a field $\mathbb K$. In characteristic zero we show that the elements algebraic over $\mathbb K(\!(x)\!)$ can be expressed as Puiseux series such that the convex hull of its support is essentially a polyhedral rational cone, strengthening the known results. In positive characteristic we construct algebraic closed fields containing the field of power series and we give examples showing that the results proved in characteristic zero are longer valid in positive characteristic.
