This paper contains a thorough investigation of invariant distributions supported on limit sets of discrete groups acting convex cocompactly on symmetric spaces of negative curvature. It can be considered as a continuation of math.DG/9810146. Based on this investigation we provide proofs of the Hodge theoretic results for the cohomology of real hyperbolic manifolds announced in math.DG/0009038, improve the bounds for the critical exponents obtained by Corlette for the quaternionic and the Cayley case, compute the L^2-cohomology for the corresponding locally symmetric spaces, prove a version of the Harder-Borel conjecture for real hyperbolic manifolds, and compute higher cohomology groups with coefficients in hyperfunctions supported on the limit set.
A vanishing theorem for a convex cocompact hyperbolic manifold is established, which relates the L2 cohomology to the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set. The borderline case is shown to characterize the manifold completely.
We show there exists a closed locally symmetric manifold $M$ modeled on $SL_n(\mathbb R)/SO(n)$, and a non-trivial homology class in degree $dim(M)-rank(M)$ represented by a totally geodesic submanifold that contains a circle factor. As a result, the comparison map $c^k:H_b^k(M,\mathbb R)\rightarrow H^k(M,\mathbb R)$ is not surjective in degree $k=dim(M)-rank(M)$. This provides a counterpart to a result of Lafont-Wang which states that $c^k$ is always surjective in degree $k\geq dim(M)-rank(M)+2$.
For a convex cocompact subgroup $G<Mod(S)$, and points $x,y \in Teich(S)$ we obtain asymptotic formulas as $R\to \infty$ of $|B_{R}(x)\cap Gy|$ as well as the number of conjugacy classes of pseudo-Anosov elements in $G$ of dilatation at most $R$. We do this by developing an analogue of Patterson-Sullivan theory for the action of $G$ on $PMF$.
We derive a formula for the regularized trace of operators with compact spectrum which act on the space of square integrable functions on the quotient of a semisimple Liegroup of real rank one by a convex-cocompact subgroup. The sum of normalized orbital integrals associated to the hyperbolic conjugacy classes of this subgroup is an invariant distribution on the group, and we state precise conjecture about its Fouriertransform. We apply our trace formula to resolvent kernels. This yields functional equations of Selberg zeta functions and information about their singularities. The paper leaves …
In this paper we show that many projective Anosov representations act convex cocompactly on some properly convex domain in real projective space. In particular, if a non-elementary word hyperbolic group is not commensurable to a non-trivial free product or the fundamental group of a closed hyperbolic surface, then any projective Anosov representation of that group acts convex cocompactly on some properly convex domain in real projective space. We also show that if a projective Anosov representation preserves a properly convex domain, then it acts convex cocompactly on some (possibly different)…
Krasnov (arXiv: hep-th/0005106) identified the renormalized volume of a Schottky 3-manifold with the action of the Liouville theory on the conformal infiinity. We try to compute the renormalized volume in terms of more transparent geometric quantities.
An octonionic contact (OC) manifold is always spherical. We construct the OC Yamabe operator on an OC manifold and prove its transformation formula under conformal OC transformations. An OC manifold is scalar positive, negative or vanishing if and only if its OC Yamabe invariant is positive, negative or zero, respectively. On a scalar positive OC manifold, we can construct the Green function of the OC Yamabe operator, and apply it to construct a conformally invariant tensor. It becomes an OC metric if the OC positive mass conjecture is true. We also show the connected sum of two scalar positiv…
Conformal qc geometry of spherical qc manifolds are investigated. We construct the qc Yamabe operators on qc manifolds, which are covariant under the conformal qc transformations. A qc manifold is scalar positive, negative or vanishing if and only if its qc Yamabe invariant is positive, negative or zero, respectively. On a scalar positive spherical qc manifold, we can construct the Green function of the qc Yamabe operator, which can be applied to construct a conformally invariant tensor. It becomes a spherical qc metric if the qc positive mass conjecture is true. Conformal qc geometry of spher…
The goal of the course was a review of results mainly due to M. Olbrich and the first author. We consider a discrete cocompact subgroup $Γ$ of a semisimple Lie group $G$. We relate the group cohomology of $Γ$ with coefficients in the maximal globalization of a representation of $G$ with the multiplicities of unitary representations of $G$ in $L^2(G/Γ)$. Explicit calculations are given in the case $G=SL(2,R)$. In the rank-one case we state a version of the Selberg trace formula, discuss the singularities of the Selberg zeta-functions, and state their relation with the cohomology of $Γ$ in princ…
We prove Patterson's conjecture about the singularities of the Selberg zeta function associated to a convex-cocompact, torsion free group acting on a hyperbolic space.
We establish a direct classical-quantum correspondence on convex cocompact hyperbolic manifolds between the spectrums of the geodesic flow and the Laplacian acting on natural tensor bundles. This extends previous work detailing the correspondence for cocompact quotients.
This is the geometric part of two papers on the cohomology of Kaehler groups. Using non-Abelian Hodge theory we show that if a finitely presented group with an unbounded complex linear morphism is the fundamental group of a compact Kaehler manifold then its second or its fourth Betti number does not vanish. Combined with our first paper this shows that a cocompact lattice in a real simple Lie group G of sufficiently large real rank is Kaehler if and only if G is of Hermitian type (a conjecture of Carlson and Toledo).
Let $Y=Γ\backslash H^n$ be a quotient of the hyperbolic space by the action of a discrete convex-cocompact group of isometries. We describe certain spaces of $Γ$-invariant currents on the sphere at infinity of $H^n$ with support on the limit set of $Γ$. These spaces are finite-dimensional. The main result identifies the cohomology of $Y$ with a quotient of such spaces. We explain in which sense this result generalizes the classical Hodge theorem for compact quotients. We obtain analogous results for the cohomology groups $H^p(Γ,F)$, where $F$ is a finite-dimensional representation of the full …
In this paper we provide the complete classification of convex cocompact Kleinian group of Hausdorff dimensions less than $1.$ In particular, we prove that every convex cocompact Kleinian group of Hausdorff dimension $<1$ is a classical Schottky group. This upper bound is sharp. The result implies that the converse of Burside's conjecture \cite{Burside} is true: All non-classical Schottky groups must have Hausdorff dimension $\ge1$. The prove of the theorem relies on the result of Hou \cite{Hou}.
The energy of harmonic sections of flat bundles of nonpositively curved (NPC) length spaces over a Riemann surface $S$ is a function $E_ρ$ on Teichmüller space $\Teich$ which is a qualitative invariant of the holonomy representation $ρ$ of $π_1(S)$. Adapting ideas of Sacks-Uhlenbeck, Schoen-Yau and Tromba, we show that the energy function $E_ρ$ is proper for any convex cocompact representation of the fundamental group. More generally, if $ρ$ is a discrete embedding onto a normal subgroup of a convex cocompact group $Γ$, then $E_ρ$ defines a proper function on the quotient $\Teich/Q$ where $Q$ …
We construct real polarizable Hodge structures on the reduced leafwise cohomology of Kähler-Riemann foliations by complex manifolds. As in the classical case one obtains a hard Lefschetz theorem for this cohomology. Serre's Kählerian analogue of the Weil conjectures carries over as well. Generalizing a construction of Looijenga and Lunts one obtains possibly infinite dimensional Lie algebras attached to Kähler-Riemann foliations. Finally using $(\mathfrak{g},K)$-cohomology we discuss a class of examples obtained by dividing a product of symmetric spaces by a cocompact lattice and considering t…
We obtain the Plancherel theorem for the quotient of a simple Lie group of real rank one by a convex-cocompact discrete subgroup and its consequences for the spectrum of locally invariant differential operators on bundles over Kleinian manifolds. We develop a geometric version of scattering theory. The paper is an update of dg-ga/9609011, which is completely rewritten from the point of view of representation theory. In particular, we are now able to show the meromorphy of Eisenstein series for all parameters.
To a complex projective structure $Σ$ on a surface, Thurston associates a locally convex pleated surface. We derive bounds on the geometry of both in terms of the norms $\|ϕ_Σ\|_\infty$ and $\|ϕ_Σ\|_2$ of the quadratic differential $ϕ_Σ$ of $Σ$ given by the Schwarzian derivative of the associated locally univalent map. We show that these give a unifying approach that generalizes a number of important, well known results for convex cocompact hyperbolic structures on 3-manifolds, including bounds on the Lipschitz constant for the nearest-point retraction and the length of the bending lamination.…
Using the thermodynamics formalism, we introduce a notion of intersection for projective Anosov representations, show analyticity results for the intersection and the entropy, and rigidity results for the intersection. We use the renormalized intersection to produce a $Out(Γ)$-invariant Riemannian metric on the smooth points of the deformation space of irreducible, projective Anosov representations of a word hyperbolic group $Γ$ into $SL(m,R)$ whose Zariski closure contains a generic element. In particular, we produce mapping class group invariant Riemannian metrics on Hitchin components which…
This is the topological part of two papers on the cohomology of Kaehler groups. In this paper we show that if a linear duality group of dimension larger than 6 is the fundamental group of a compact Kaehler manifold then its second or its fourth Betti number is non-zero. As a corollary a cocompact p-adic lattice of rank larger than 6 is never Kaehler.
For a compact, oriented, hyperbolic $n$-manifold $(M,g)$, realised as $M= Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}^{n}$ where $Γ$ is a torsion-free cocompact subgroup of $SO(n,1)$, we establish and study a relationship between differential geometric cohomology on $M$ and algebraic invariants of the group $Γ$. In particular for $\mathbb{F}$ an irreducible $SO(n,1)$-module, we show that the group cohomology with coefficients $H^{\bullet}(Γ, \mathbb{F})$ is isomorphic to the cohomology of an appropriate projective BGG complex on $M$. This yields the geometric interpretation that $H^{\bullet}(Γ, \mathbb{F})$ parame…
We study the infimum of the renormalized volume for convex-cocompact hyperbolic manifolds, as well as describing how a sequence converging to such values behaves. In particular, we show that the renormalized volume is continuous under the appropriate notion of limit. This result generalizes previous work in the subject.
We show vanishing theorems of $L^2$-cohomology groups of Kodaira-Nakano type on complete Hessian manifolds. We obtain further vanishing theorems of $L^2$-cohomology groups $L^2H^{p,q}(Ω)$ on a regular convex cone $Ω$ with the Cheng-Yau metric for $p>q$.
We establish that for any proper action of a Lie group on a manifold the associated equivariant differentiable cohomology groups with coefficients in modules of $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-functions vanish in all degrees except than zero. Furthermore let $G$ be a Lie group of $CR$-automorphisms of a strictly pseudo-convex $CR$-manifold $M$. We associate to $G$ a canonical class in the first differential cohomology of $G$ with coefficients in the $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-functions on $M$. This class is non-zero if and only if $G$ is essential in the sense that there does not exist a $CR$-compatible strict…
A Kleinian manifold Y is a quotient of a rank-one symmetric space of non-compact type by a convex-cocompact discrete group of isometries. We describe the spectral decomposition of the space of square integrable sections of locally homogeneous bundles on Y with respect to locally invariant differential operators. In the course of the proof we obtain meromorphic continuations of Eisenstein series and scattering matrices.
On manifolds with an even Riemannian conformally compact Einstein metric, the resolvent of the Lichnerowicz Laplacian, acting on trace-free, divergence-free, symmetric 2-tensors is shown to have a meromorphic continuation to the complex plane, defining quantum resonances of this Laplacian. For higher rank symmetric tensors, a similar result is proven for (convex cocompact) quotients of hyperbolic space.
For a finitely generated discrete group $Γ$ acting properly on a spin manifold $M$, we formulate new topological obstructions to $Γ$-invariant metrics of positive scalar curvature on $M$ that take into account the cohomology of the classifying space $\underline{B}Γ$ for proper actions. In the cocompact case, this leads to a natural generalisation of Gromov-Lawson's notion of higher $\hat{A}$-genera to the setting of proper actions by groups with torsion. It is conjectured that these invariants obstruct the existence of $Γ$-invariant positive scalar curvature on $M$. For classes arising from th…
A Fuchsian polyhedron in hyperbolic space is a polyhedral surface invariant under the action of a Fuchsian group of isometries (i.e. a group of isometries leaving globally invariant a totally geodesic surface, on which it acts cocompactly). The induced metric on a convex Fuchsian polyhedron is isometric to a hyperbolic metric with conical singularities of positive singular curvature on a compact surface of genus greater than one. We prove that these metrics are actually realised by exactly one convex Fuchsian polyhedron (up to global isometries). This extends a famous theorem of A.D. Alexandro…
Let $X$ be a proper CAT($0$) space and $G$ a cocompact group of isometries of $X$ without fixed point at infinity. We prove that if $\partial X$ contains an invariant subset of circumradius $π/2$, then $X$ contains a quasi-dense, closed convex subspace that splits as a product. Adding the assumption that the $G$-action on $X$ is properly discontinuous, we give more conditions that are equivalent to a product splitting. In particular, this occurs if $\partial X$ contains a proper nonempty, closed, invariant, $π$-convex set in $\partial X$; or if some nonempty closed, invariant set in $\partial …
