The main result proved in the paper is the computation of the explicit equations defining the Hurwitz schemes of coverings with punctures as subschemes of the Sato infinite Grassmannian. As an application, we characterize the existence of certain linear series on a smooth curve in terms of soliton equations.
In this paper we study the Hurwitz scheme in terms of the Sato Grassmannian and the algebro-geometric theory of solitons. We will give a characterization, its equations and a show that there is a group of Virasoro type which uniformizes it.
We derive an algorithm to produce explicit formulas for certain generating functions of double Hurwitz numbers. These formulas generalize a formula of Goulden, Jackson and Vakil for one part double Hurwitz numbers. Immediate consequences include a new proof that double Hurwitz numbers are piecewise polynomial, an understanding of the chamber structure and wall crossing for these polynomials, and a proof of the Goulden, Jackson and Vakil's Strong Piecewise Polynomiality conjecture. The method is a straightforward application of Okounkov's expression for double Hurwitz numbers in terms of operat…
The aim of this paper is to construct an immersion of the Drinfeld moduli schemes in a finite product of infinite Grassmannians, such that they will be locally closed subschemes of these Grassmannians which represent a kind of flag varieties.
This paper aims at generalizing some geometric properties of Grassmannians of finite dimensional vector spaces to the case of Grassmannnians of infinite dimensional ones, in particular for that of $k((z))$. It is shown that the Determinant Line Bundle generates its Picard Group and that the Plücker equations define it as closed subscheme of a infinite projective space. Finally, a characterization of finite dimensional projective spaces in Grassmannians allows us to offer an approach to the study of the automorphism group.
An algebraic approach is developed to define and study infinite dimensional grassmannians. Using this approach a quantum deformation is obtained for both the ind-variety union of all finite dimensional grassmannians, and the Sato grassmannian introduced by Sato. They are both quantized as homogeneous spaces, that is together with a coaction of a quantum infinite dimensional group. At the end, an infinite dimensional version of the first theorem of invariant theory is discussed for both the infinite dimensional special linear group and its quantization.
The construction of families of Sato Grassmannians, their determinant line bundles and the extensions induced by them are given. The base scheme is an arbitrary scheme.
The simplest example of an ind-Grassmannian is the infinite projective space $\mathbf P^\infty$. The Barth-Van de Ven-Tyurin (BVT) Theorem, proved more than 30 years ago \cite{BV}, \cite{T}, \cite{Sa} (see also a recent proof by A. Coandă and G. Trautmann, \cite{CT}), claims that any vector bundle of finite rank on $\mathbf P^\infty$ is isomorphic to a direct sum of line bundles. In the last decade natural examples of infinite flag varieties (or flag ind-varieties) have arisen as homogeneous spaces of locally linear ind-groups, \cite{DPW}, \cite{DiP}. In the present paper we concentrate our at…
In this paper the moduli space of Higgs pairs over a fixed smooth projective curve with extra formal data is defined and it is endowed with a scheme structure. We introduce a relative version of the Krichever map using a fibration of Sato Grassmannians and show that this map is injective. This fact and the characterization of the points of the image of the Krichever map allow us to prove that this moduli space is a closed subscheme of the product of the moduli of vector bundles (with formal extra data) and a formal anologue of the Hitchin base. This characterization also provide us the method …
This lecture note is devoted to prove that the space of vacua is isomorphic with the space of generalized theta functions (joint work with M.S. Narasimhan, and A. Ramanathan)
In this paper we study Prym varieties and their moduli space using the well known techniques of the infinite Grassmannian. There are three main results of this paper: a new definition of the BKP hierarchy over an arbitrary base field (that generalizes the classical one over the complex numbers; a characterization of Prym varieties in terms of dynamical systems, and explicit equations for the moduli space of (certain) Prym varieties. For all of these problems the language of the infinite Grassmannian, in its algebro-geometric version, allows us to deal with these problems from the same point of…
We study toric degenerations of semi-infinite Grassmannians (a.k.a. quantum Grassmannians). While the toric degenerations of the classical Grassmannians are well studied, the only known example in the semi-infinite case is due to Sottile-Sturmfels. We start by providing a new interpretation of the Sottile-Sturmfels construction by finding a poset such that their degeneration is the toric variety of the order polytope of the poset. We then use our poset to construct and study a new toric degeneration in the semi-infinite case. Our construction is based on the notion of poset polytopes introduce…
The main result of this paper is the explicit computation of the equations defining the moduli space of triples $(C,p,z)$ (where $C$ is an integral and complete algebraic curve, $p$ a smooth rational point and $z$ a formal trivialization around $p$) in the infinite Grassmannian of $k((t))$. This is achieved by introducing infinite Grassmannians, tau and Baker-Ahkiezer functions algebraically and by proving an Addition Formula for tau functions.
Various generating functions of simple Hurwitz numbers of the projective line are known to satisfy many properties. They include a heat equation, the Eynard-Orantin topological recursion, an infinite-order differential equation called a quantum curve equation, and a Schroedinger like partial differential equation. In this paper we generalize these properties to simple Hurwitz numbers with an arbitrary base curve.
We introduce the semi-infinite category of sheaves on the affine Grassmannian, and construct a particular object in it, which we call the the semi-infinite intersection cohomology sheaf. We relate it to several other entities naturally appearing in the geometric Langlands theory.
A set of functions is defined which is indexed by a positive integer $n$ and partitions of integers. The case $n=1$ reproduces the standard Schur polynomials. These functions are seen to arise naturally as a determinant of an action on the frame bundle of an infinite grassmannian. This fact is well known in the case of the Schur polynomials ($n=1$) and has been used to decompose the $τ$-functions of the KP hierarchy as a sum. In the same way, the new functions introduced here ($n>1$) are used to expand quotients of $τ$-functions as a sum with Plucker coordinates as coefficients.
We categorify all the Reshetikhin-Turaev tangle invariants of type A. Our main tool is a categorification of the generalized Jones-Wenzl projectors (a.k.a. clasps) as infinite twists. Applying this to certain convolution product varieties on the affine Grassmannian we extend our earlier work with Kamnitzer from standard to arbitrary representations.
We define the notion of inseparable coverings of schemes and we propose a ramification formalism for them, along the lines of the classical one. Using this formalism we prove a formula analogous to the classical Riemann-Hurwitz formula for generic torsors under infinitesimal diagonalizable group schemes.
We describe a well-known collection of vertex operators on the infinite wedge representation as a limit of geometric correspondences on the equivariant cohomology groups of a finite-dimensional approximation of the Sato grassmannian, by cutoffs in high and low degrees. We prove that locality, the boson-fermion correspondence, and intertwining relations with the Virasoro algebra are limits of the localization expression for the composition of these operators. We then show that these operators are, almost by definition, the Hilbert scheme vertex operators defined by Okounkov and the author in \c…
Let $σ$ be a simple involution of an algebraic semisimple group $G$ and let $H$ be the subgroup of $G$ of points fixed by $σ$. If the restricted root system is of type $A$, $C$ or $BC$ and $G$ is simply connected or if the restricted root system is of type $B$ and $G$ is adjoint, then we describe a standard monomial theory and the equations for the coordinate ring $k[G/H]$ using the standard monomial theory and the Plücker relations of an appropriate (maybe infinite dimensional) Grassmann variety.
Algebraic and geometric structures associated with Birkhoff strata of Sato Grassmannian are analyzed. It is shown that each Birkhoff stratum $Σ_S$ contains a subset $W_{\hat{S}}$ of points for which each fiber of the corresponding tautological subbundle $TB_{W_S}$ is closed with respect to multiplication. Algebraically $TB_{W_S}$ is an infinite family of infinite-dimensional commutative associative algebras and geometrically it is an infinite tower of families of algebraic curves. For the big cell the subbundle $TB_{W_\varnothing}$ represents the tower of families of normal rational (Veronese)…
Sato theory provides a correspondence between solutions to the KP hierarchy and points in an infinite dimensional Grassmannian. In this correspondence, flows generated infinitesimally by powers of the ``shift'' operator give time dependence to the first coordinate of an arbitrarily selected point, making it a tau-function. These tau-functions satisfy a number of integrable equations, including the Hirota Bilinear Difference Equation (HBDE). Here, we rederive the HBDE as a statement about linear maps between Grassmannians. In addition to illustrating the fundamental nature of this equation in t…
We introduce a one-parameter deformation of the 2-Toda tau-function of (weighted) Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We show that its coefficients are polynomials in the deformation parameter $b$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients count generalized branched coverings of the sphere by an arbitrary surface, orientable or not, with an appropriate $b$-weighting that "measures" in some sense their non-orientability. Notable special cases include non-orientable dessins d'enfants for which we prove the most general result so fa…
The {\em Schubert derivation} is a distinguished Hasse-Schmidt derivation on the exterior algebra of a free abelian group, encoding the formalism of Schubert calculus for all Grassmannians at once. The purpose of this paper is to extend the Schubert derivation to the infinite exterior power of a free ${\mathbb Z}$-module of infinite rank (fermionic Fock space). Classical vertex operators naturally arise from the {\em integration by parts formula}, that also recovers the generating function occurring in the {\em bosonic vertex representation} of the Lie algebra $gl_\infty({\mathbb Z})$, due to …
