Field of moduli and field of definition for curves of genus 2

Let M_2 be the moduli space that classifies genus 2 curves. If a curve C is defined over a field k, the corresponding moduli point P=[C] is defined over k. Mestre solved the converse problem for curves with Aut(C) isomorphic to C_2. Given a moduli point defined over k, Mestre finds an obstruction to the existence of a corresponding curve defined over k, that is an element in Br_2(k) not always trivial. In this paper we prove that for all the other possibilities of Aut(C), every moduli point defined over k is represented by a curve defined over k. We also give an explicit construction of such a curve in terms of the coordinates of the moduli point.

Classification of genus 3 curves in special strata of the moduli space

We describe the invariants of plane quartic curves -- nonhyperelliptic genus 3 curves in their canonical model -- as determined by Dixmier and Ohno, with application to the classification of curves with given structure. In particular, we determine modular equations for the strata in the moduli space $\Me_3$ of plane quartics which have at least seven hyperflexes, and obtain an computational characterization of curves in these strata.

Connectedness of The Moduli Space of Artin-Schreier Curves of Fixed Genus

We study the moduli space $\mathcal{AS}_{g}$ of Artin-Schreier curves of genus $g$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic $p$. The moduli space is partitioned by irreducible strata, where each stratum parameterizes Artin-Schreier curves whose ramification divisors have the same coefficients. We construct deformations of these curves to study the relations between those strata. As an application, when $p=3$, we prove that $\mathcal{AS}_{g}$ is connected for all possible $g$. Traces of High Powers of the Frobenius Class in the Moduli Space of Hyperelliptic Curves

The Zeta function of a curve $C$ over a finite field may be expressed in terms of the characteristic polynomial of a unitary matrix $Θ_C$. Following the work of Rudnick, we compute the expected value of $\mbox{tr}(Θ_C^n)$ over the moduli space of hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$, over a fixed finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, in the limit of large genus. As an application, we compute the expected value of the number of points on $C$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ as the genus tends to infinity. We also look at biases in both expected values for small values of $n$.
