The determinant is a main organizing tool in commutative linear algebra. In this review we present a theory of the quasideterminants defined for matrices over a division algebra. We believe that the notion of quasideterminants should be one of main organizing tools in noncommutative algebra giving them the same role determinants play in commutative algebra.

Minor Identities for Quasideterminants and Quantum Determinants

We present several identities involving quasi-minors of noncommutative generic matrices. These identities are specialized to quantum matrices, yielding q-analogues of various classical determinantal formulas.

Quantum determinants and quasideterminants

The notion of a quasideterminant and a quasiminor of a matrix A=(a_{ij}) with not necessarily commuting entries was introduced recently by I.Gelfand and the second author. The ordinary determinant of a matrix with commuting entries can be written (in many ways) as a product of quasiminors. Higher Trace and Berezinian of Matrices over a Clifford Algebra

We define the notions of trace, determinant and, more generally, Berezinian of matrices over a (Z_2)^n graded commutative associative algebra. The applications include a new approach to the classical theory of matrices with coefficients in a Clifford algebra, in particular of quaternionic matrices. In a special case, we recover the classical Dieudonné determinant of quaternionic matrices, but in general our quaternionic determinant is different. Determinants over graded-commutative algebras, a categorical viewpoint

We generalize linear superalgebra to higher gradings and commutation factors, given by arbitrary abelian groups and bicharacters. Our central tool is an extension, to monoidal categories of modules, of the Nekludova-Scheunert faithful functor between the categories of graded-commutative and supercommutative algebras. As a result we generalize (super-)trace, determinant and Berezinian to graded matrices over graded-commutative algebras. For instance, on homogeneous quaternionic matrices, we obtain a lift of the Dieudonné determinant to the skew-field of quaternions.
