The aim of this article is to proof a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a Cartan connection on a principal bundle. After collecting the essentially well known facts to fix the terminology, soldering forms and geometrizable principal bundles are defined to finally prove the existence criterion.
We describe invariant principal and Cartan connections on homogeneous principal bundles and show how to calculate the curvature and the holonomy; in the case of an invariant Cartan connection we give a formula for the infinitesimal automorphisms. The main result of this paper is that the above calculations are purely algorithmic. As an example of an homogeneous parabolic geometry we treat a conformal structure on the product of two spheres.
We show that the extended principal bundle of a Cartan geometry of type $(A(m,\mathbb{R}),GL(m,\mathbb{R}))$, endowed with its extended connection $\hatω$, is isomorphic to the principal $A(m,\mathbb{R})$-bundle of affine frames endowed with the affine connection as defined in classical Kobayashi-Nomizu volume I. Then we classify the local holonomy groups of the Cartan geometry canonically associated to a Riemannian manifold. It follows that if the holonomy group of the Cartan geometry canonically associated to a Riemannian manifold is compact then the Riemannian manifold is locally a product …
In this article, we survey along the historical route the classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces in the sphere, paying attention to the employed techniques in the case of four principal curvatures.
Let $p$ be a Lie subalgebra of a semisimple Lie algebra $g$ and $(G,P)$ be the corresponding pair of connected Lie groups. A Cartan geometry of type $(G,P)$ associates to a smooth manifold $M$ a principal $P$-bundle and a Cartan connection, and a parabolic geometry is a Cartan geometry where $P$ is parabolic. We show that if $P$ is parabolic, the adjoint tractor bundle of a Cartan geometry, which is isomorphic to the Atiyah algebroid of the principal $P$-bundle, admits the structure of a (pre-)Courant algebroid, and we identify the topological obstruction to the bracket being a Courant bracket…
On a cotangent bundle $T\sp*G$ of a Lie group $G$ one can describe the standard Liouville form $θ$ and the symplectic form $d θ$ in terms of the right Maurer Cartan form and the left moment mapping (of the right action of $G$ on itself), and also in terms of the left Maurer-Cartan form and the right moment mapping, and also the Poisson structure can be written in related quantities. This leads to a wide class of exact symplectic stuctures on $T\sp*G$ and to Poisson structures by replacing the canonical momenta of the right or left actions of $G$ on itself by arbitrary ones, followed by reducti…
This work is a spin-off of an on-going programme which aims at revisiting the original studies of Lie and Cartan on pseudogroups and geometric structures from a modern perspective. We encode geometric structures induced by transitive Lie pseudogroups into principal $G$-bundles equipped with a transversally parallelisable foliation generated by a subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$, called Cartan bundles. Our approach is complementary to arXiv:1911.13147 and is based on Morita equivalence of Lie groupoids. After identifying the main examples and properties, we develop a notion of flatness with respect…
In the framework of Abstract Differential Geometry, we show that to a given principal sheaf and a representation of its stuctural sheaf in $A^n$, where A is a sheaf of associative, commutative, unital algebras (over R or C), we associate a vector sheaf. Moreover, under some natural assumptions on the compatibility of the representation with the Maurer-Cartan (or, logarithmic) differentials of the structural sheaves involved, we also show that the connections of the principal sheaf induce A-connections of the associated vector sheaf. We thus recover a result of the classical Differential Geomet…
In the first part of this series of papers we developed the invariant differentiation with respect to a Cartan connection, we described this procedure in the terms of the underlying principal connections, and we discussed applications of this theory to the construction of natural operators. In this part we will extend the results of \cite{Ochiai, 70} on the existence and the uniqueness of the so called normal Cartan connections on manifolds with almost Hermitian symmetric structures to first order structures which do not admit a torsion free linear connection. Moreover, for each of these struc…
Let G be a connected Lie group, LG its loop group, and PG->G the principal LG-bundle defined by quasi-periodic paths in G. This paper is devoted to differential geometry of the Atiyah algebroid A=T(PG)/LG of this bundle. Given a symmetric bilinear form on the Lie algebra g and the corresponding central extension of Lg, we consider the lifting problem for A, and show how the cohomology class of the Cartan 3-form on G arises as an obstruction. This involves the construction of a 2-form on PG with differential the pull-back of the Cartan form. In the second part of this paper we obtain similar LG…
Around 1923, Elie Cartan introduced affine connections on manifolds and definedthe main related concepts: torsion, curvature, holonomy groups. He discussed applications of these concepts in Classical and Relativistic Mechanics; in particular he explained how parallel transport with respect to a connection can be related to the principle of inertia in Galilean Mechanics and, more generally, can be used to model the motion of a particle in a gravitational field. In subsequent papers, Elie Cartan extended these concepts for other types of connections on a manifold: Euclidean, Galilean and Minkows…
The classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces with four principal curvatures in spheres in [2] hinges on a crucial characterization, in terms of four sets of equations of the 2nd fundamental form tensors of a focal submanifold, of an isoparametric hypersurface of the type constructed by Ferus, Karcher and Münzner. The proof of the characterization in [2] is an extremely long calculation by exterior derivatives with remarkable cancellations, which is motivated by the idea that an isoparametric hypersurface is defined by an over-determined system of partial differential equations. Therefore,…
Let X be a compact connected Kaehler manifold such that the holomorphic tangent bundle TX is numerically effective. A theorem of Demailly, Peternell and Schenider says that there is a finite unramified Galois covering M --> X, a complex torus T, and a holomorphic surjective submersion f: M --> T, such that the fibers of f are Fano manifolds with numerically effective tangent bundle. A conjecture of Campana and Peternell says that the fibers of f are rational and homogeneous. Assume that X admits a holomorphic Cartan geometry. We prove that the fibers of f are rational homogeneous varieties. We…
In this paper we provide an explicit description of normal almost contact structures obtained from Cartan-Ehresmann connections (gauge fields) on principal $S^{1}$-bundles over complex flag manifolds. The main feature of our approach is to employ elements of representation theory of complex simple Lie algebras in order to describe and classify these structures. We use these normal almost contact structures to explicitly describe a huge class of compact Hermitian non-Kähler manifolds obtained from products of principal $S^{1}$-bundles over complex flag manifolds. Moreover, we obtain from our de…
In a recent expository article (Notices of the AMS, 58 (2011), no. 1, 20-27), Ezhov, McLaughlin and Schmalz showed how to perform in an effective way Tanaka's prolongation procedure valid generally for filtered structures of constant type when the distribution is equipped with an integrable complex structure, so as to derive the principal curvature invariants and (co)frame(s) associated to strongly pseudoconvex real hypersurfaces M3 in C2, an approach which is alternative and complementary to the `hyperspherical' connection of Elie Cartan, and to the so-called calculi of Fefferman, of Chern-Mo…
Let $Q\to M$ be a principal $G$-bundle, and $B_0$ a connection on $Q$. We introduce an infinitesimal homogeneity condition for sections in an associated vector bundle $Q\times_GV$ with respect to $B_0$, and, inspired by the well known Ambrose-Singer theorem, we prove the existence of a connection which satisfies a system of parallelism conditions. We explain how this general theorem can be used to prove the known Ambrose-Singer type theorems by an appropriate choice of the initial system of data.We also obtain new applications, which cannot be obtained using the known formalisms, e.g. a classi…
For a compact Lie group acting on a smooth manifold, we define the differential cohomology of a certain quotient stack involving principal bundles with connection. This produces differential equivariant cohomology groups that map to the Cartan-Weil equivariant forms and to Borel's equivariant integral cohomology. We show the Chern-Weil homomorphism for equivariant vector bundles with connection naturally factors through differential equivariant cohomology.
In the present paper we suggest an explicit construction of a Cartan connection for an elliptic or hyperbolic CR manifold M of dimension six and codimension two, i.e. a pair (P, w), consisting of a principal bundle P over M and of a Cartan connection form w on P, satisfying the following property: the (local) CR transformations of M are in one to one correspondence with the (local) automorphisms of P which preserve w. For any point x in M, this construction determines an explicit immersion of the stability subalgebra Lie(aut(M)_x) into the Lie algebra Lie(H) of the structure group H of P.
The purpose of this note is to provide yet another example of the link between certain conformal geometries and ordinary differential equations, along the lines of the examples discussed by Nurowski in math.DG/0406400. In this particular case, I consider the equivalence problem for 3-plane fields D on 6-manifolds M that satisfy the nondegeneracy condition that D+[D,D]=TM I give a solution of the equivalence problem for such D (as Tanaka has previously), showing that it defines a so(4,3)-valued Cartan connection on a principal right H-bundle over M where H is the subgroup of SO(4,3) that stabil…
The geometry of the total space of a principal bundle with regard to the action of the bundle's structure group is elegantly described by the bundle's operation, a collection of derivations consisting of the de Rham differential and the contraction and Lie derivatives of all vertical vector fields and satisfying the six Cartan relations. Connections and gauge transformations are defined by the way they behave under the action of the operation's derivations. In the first paper of a series of two extending the ordinary theory, we constructed an operational total space theory of strict principal …
Let $C\to M$ be the bundle of connections of a principal bundle on $M$. The solutions to Hamilton-Cartan equations for a gauge-invariant Lagrangian density $Λ$ on $C$ satisfying a weak condition of regularity, are shown to admit an affine fibre-bundle structure over the set of solutions to Euler-Lagrange equations for $Λ$. This structure is also studied for the Jacobi fields and for the moduli space of extremals.
It is a classic result that the geometry of the total space of a principal bundle with reference to the action of the bundle's structure group is codified in the bundle's operation, a collection of derivations comprising the de Rham differential and the contraction and Lie derivatives of all vertical vector fields and obeying the six Cartan relations. In particular, connections and gauge transformations can be defined through the way they are acted upon by the operation's derivations. In this paper, the first of a series of two extending the ordinary theory, we construct an operational total s…
