In [BabStein] Babson and Steingr\'ımsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. In [Kit1] Kitaev considered simultaneous avoidance (multi-avoidance) of two or more 3-patterns with no internal dashes, that is, where the patterns correspond to contiguous subwords in a permutation. There either an explicit or a recursive formula was given for all but one case of simultaneous avoidance of more than two patterns.
In this paper we find the exponential generating function for the remaining case. Also we consider permutations that avoid a pattern of the form $x-yz$ or $xy-z$ and begin with one of the patterns $12... k$, $k(k-1)... 1$, $23... k1$, $(k-1)(k-2)... 1k$ or end with one of the patterns $12... k$, $k(k-1)... 1$, $1k(k-1)... 2$, $k12... (k-1)$. For each of these cases we find either the ordinary or exponential generating functions or a precise formula for the number of such permutations. Besides we generalize some of the obtained results as well as some of the results given in [Kit3]: we consider permutations avoiding certain generalized 3-patterns and beginning (ending) with an arbitrary pattern having either the greatest or the least letter as its rightmost (leftmost) letter.
In this paper, the problem of pattern avoidance in generalized non-crossing trees is studied. The generating functions for generalized non-crossing trees avoiding patterns of length one and two are obtained. Lagrange inversion formula is used to obtain the explicit formulas for some special cases. Bijection is also established between generalized non-crossing trees with special pattern avoidance and the little Schröder paths.
In this paper, we study pattern avoidances of generalized permutations and show that the number of all generalized permutations avoiding $π$ is independent of the choice of $π\in S_3$, which extends the classic results on permutations avoiding $π\in S_3$. Extending both Dyck path and Riordan path, we introduce the Catalan-Riordan path which turns out to be a combinatorial interpretation of the difference array of Catalan numbers. As applications, we interpret both Motzkin and Riordan numbers in two ways, via semistandard Young tableaux of two rows and generalized permutations avoiding $π\in S_…
In [Kit1] Kitaev discussed simultaneous avoidance of two 3-patterns with no internal dashes, that is, where the patterns correspond to contiguous subwords in a permutation. In three essentially different cases, the numbers of such $n$-permutations are $2^{n-1}$, the number of involutions in $\mathcal{S}_n$, and $2E_n$, where $E_n$ is the $n$-th Euler number. In this paper we give recurrence relations for the remaining three essentially different cases. To complete the descriptions in [Kit3] and [KitMans], we consider avoidance of a pattern of the form $x-y-z$ (a classical 3-pattern) and beginn…
Klazar defined and studied a notion of pattern avoidance for set partitions, which is an analogue of pattern avoidance for permutations. Sagan considered partitions which avoid a single partition of three elements. We enumerate partitions which avoid any family of partitions of a 3-element set as was done by Simion and Schmidt for permutations. We also consider even and odd set partitions. We provide enumerative results for set partitions restricted by generalized set partition patterns, which are an analogue of the generalized permutation patterns of Babson and Steingr{\'ı}msson. Finally, in …
Babson and Steingr\'ımsson introduced generalized permutation patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. We consider n-permutations that avoid the generalized pattern 1-32 and whose k rightmost letters form an increasing subword. The number of such permutations is a linear combination of Bell numbers. We find a bijection between these permutations and all partitions of an $(n-1)$-element set with one subset marked that satisfy certain additional conditions. Also we find the e.g.f. for the number of permutations that avoid a g…
In 1976, Dekking showed that there exists an infinite binary word that contains neither squares yy with y >= 4 nor cubes xxx. We show that `cube' can be replaced by any fractional power > 5/2. We also consider the analogous problem where `4' is replaced by any integer. This results in an interesting and subtle hierarchy.

Sergey Kitaev has shown that the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding the generalized pattern $σ$-$k$, where $σ$ is a pattern without dashes and $k$ is one greater than the biggest element in $σ$, is determined by the exponential generating function for permutations avoiding $σ$. We show that this also holds for permutations avoiding all the generalized patterns $σ_1$-$k_1$, $...$, $σ_n$-$k_n$, where $σ_1$, $...$, $σ_n$ are patterns without dashes and $k_i$ is one greater than the biggest element in $σ_i$. Similarly the exponential generating function for permutations avoi…
A natural generalization of single pattern avoidance is subset avoidance. A complete study of subset avoidance for the case k=3 is carried out in [SS]. For k>3 situation becomes more complicated, as the number of possible cases grows rapidly. Recently, several authors have considered the case of general k when T has some nice algebraic properties. Barcucci, Del Lungo, Pergola, and Pinzani in [BDPP) treated the case when $T=T_1$ is the centralizer of k-1 and k under the natural action of $S_k$ on [k]. Mansour and Vainshtein in [MVp] treated the case when $T=T_2$ is maximal parabolic group of $S…
We study the distribution of the statistics 'number of fixed points' and 'number of excedances' in permutations avoiding subsets of patterns of length 3. We solve all the cases of simultaneous avoidance of more than one pattern, giving generating functions enumerating these two statistics. Some cases are generalized to patterns of arbitrary length. For avoidance of one single pattern we give partial results. We also describe the distribution of these statistics in involutions avoiding any subset of patterns of length 3. The main technique is to use bijections between pattern-avoiding permutati…
Pattern avoidance for permutations has been extensively studied, and has been generalized to vincular patterns, where certain elements can be required to be adjacent. In addition, cyclic permutations, i.e., permutations written in a circle rather than a line, have been frequently studied, including in the context of pattern avoidance. We investigate vincular pattern avoidance on cyclic permutations. In particular, we enumerate many avoidance classes of sets of vincular patterns of length 3, including a complete enumeration for all single patterns of length 3. Further, several of the avoidance …
In this paper, we extend to a non-consecutive case, the study of the pattern matching condition on the wreath product of the cyclic group and the symmetric group initiated by the authors in a previous paper. The main focus of our paper is (colored) patterns of length 2, although a number of enumerative results for longer patterns are also presented. A new non-trivial bijective interpretation for the Catalan numbers is found, in terms of simultaneously bi-avoiding two patterns in a wreath product.
Patience Sorting is a combinatorial algorithm that can be viewed as an iterated, non-recursive form of the Schensted Insertion Algorithm. In recent work the authors have shown that Patience Sorting provides an algorithmic description for permutations avoiding the barred (generalized) permutation pattern $3-\bar{1}-42$. Motivated by this and a recently formulated geometric form for Patience Sorting in terms of certain intersecting lattice paths, we study the related themes of restricted input and avoidance of similar barred permutation patterns. One such result is to characterize those permutat…
In this paper we consider the enumeration of binary trees avoiding non-contiguous binary tree patterns. We begin by computing closed formulas for the number of trees avoiding a single binary tree pattern with 4 or fewer leaves and compare these results to analogous work for contiguous tree patterns. Next, we give an explicit generating function that counts binary trees avoiding a single non-contiguous tree pattern according to number of leaves. In addition, we enumerate binary trees that simultaneously avoid more than one tree pattern. Finally, we explore connections between pattern-avoiding t…
Natural q analogues of classical statistics on the symmetric groups $S_n$ are introduced; parameters like: the q-length, the q-inversion number, the q-descent number and the q-major index. MacMahon's theorem about the equi-distribution of the inversion number and the reverse major index is generalized to all positive integers q. It is also shown that the q-inversion number and the q-reverse major index are equi-distributed over subsets of permutations avoiding certain patterns. Natural q analogues of the Bell and the Stirling numbers are related to these q statistics -- through the counting of…
The aim of this paper is two-fold. We first prove several new interpretations of a kind of $(q,t)$-Catalan numbers along with their corresponding $γ$-expansions using pattern avoiding permutations. Secondly, we give a complete characterization of certain $(-1)$-phenomenon for each subset of permutations avoiding a single pattern of length three, and discuss their $q$-analogues utilizing the newly obtained $q$-$γ$-expansions, as well as the continued fraction of a quint-variate generating function due to Shin and the fourth author. Moreover, we enumerate the alternating permutations avoiding si…
Pattern avoidance in the symmetric group $S_n$ has provided a number of useful connections between seemingly unrelated problems from stack-sorting to Schubert varieties. Recent work has generalized these results to $S_n\wr C_c$, the objects of which can be viewed as "colored permutations". Another body of research that has grown from the study of pattern avoidance in permutations is pattern avoidance in $Π_n$, the set of set partitions of $[n]$. Pattern avoidance in set partitions is a generalization of the well-studied notion of noncrossing partitions. Motivated by recent results in pattern a…
Let I_n(π) denote the number of involutions in the symmetric group S_n which avoid the permutation π. We say that two permutations α,β\in§{j} may be exchanged if for every n, k, and ordering τof j+1,...,k, we have I_n(ατ)=I_n(βτ). Here we prove that 12 and 21 may be exchanged and that 123 and 321 may be exchanged. The ability to exchange 123 and 321 implies a conjecture of Guibert, thus completing the classification of S_4 with respect to pattern avoidance by involutions; both of these results also have consequences for longer patterns. Pattern avoidance by involutions may be generalized to ro…
A permutation whose any prefix has no more descents than ascents is called a ballot permutation. In this paper, we present a decomposition of ballot permutations that enables us to construct a bijection between ballot permutations and odd order permutations, which proves a set-valued extension of a conjecture due to Spiro using the statistic of peak values. This bijection also preserves the neighbors of the largest letter in permutations and thus resolves a refinement of Spiro' s conjecture proposed by Wang and Zhang. Our decomposition can be extended to well-labelled positive paths, a class o…
In the last decade a huge amount of articles has been published studying pattern avoidance on permutations. From the point of view of enumeration, typically one tries to count permutations avoiding certain patterns according to their lengths. Here we tackle the problem of refining this enumeration by considering the statistics "first/last entry". We give complete results for every generalized patterns of type $(1,2)$ or $(2,1)$ as well as for some cases of permutations avoiding a pair of generalized patterns of the above types.
A partially ordered (generalized) pattern (POP) is a generalized pattern some of whose letters are incomparable, an extension of generalized permutation patterns introduced by Babson and Steingrimsson. POPs were introduced in the symmetric group by Kitaev [Partially ordered generalized patterns, Discrete Math. 298 (2005), 212-229; Introduction to partially ordered patterns, Discrete Appl. Math., to appear], and studied in the set of $k$-ary words by Kitaev and Mansour [Partially ordered generalized patterns and $k$-ary words, Annals of Combinatorics 7 (2003) 191-200]. Moreover, Kitaev et al. […
An occurrence of a classical pattern p in a permutation πis a subsequence of πwhose letters are in the same relative order (of size) as those in p. In an occurrence of a generalized pattern, some letters of that subsequence may be required to be adjacent in the permutation. Subsets of permutations characterized by the avoidance--or the prescribed number of occurrences--of generalized patterns exhibit connections to an enormous variety of other combinatorial structures, some of them apparently deep. We give a short overview of the state of the art for generalized patterns.
We introduce a new concept of permutation avoidance pattern called hatted pattern, which is a natural generalization of the barred pattern. We show the growth rate of the class of permutations avoiding a hatted pattern in comparison to barred pattern. We prove that Dyck paths with no peak at height $p$, Dyck paths with no $ud... du$ and Motzkin paths are counted by hatted pattern avoiding permutations in $\s_n(132)$ by showing explicit bijections. As a result, a new direct bijection between Motzkin paths and permutations in $\s_n(132)$ without two consecutive adjacent numbers is given. These p…
Following Anders and Archer, we say that an unordered rooted labeled forest avoids the pattern $σ\in\mathcal{S}_k$ if in each tree, each sequence of labels along the shortest path from the root to a vertex does not contain a subsequence with the same relative order as $σ$. For each permutation $σ\in\mathcal{S}_{k-2}$, we construct a bijection between $n$-vertex forests avoiding $(σ)(k-1)k:=σ(1)\cdotsσ(k-2)(k-1)k$ and $n$-vertex forests avoiding $(σ)k(k-1):=σ(1)\cdotsσ(k-2)k(k-1)$, giving a common generalization of results of West on permutations and Anders--Archer on forests. We further define…
We prove the simultaneous multiplication formulas for Apostol-Bernoulli polynomials and generalized Frobenius-Euler polynomials. These formulas contain Dedekind-Rademacher sums, Apostol-Dedekind sums and Fourier-Dedekind sums.
Not long ago, Claesson and Mansour proposed some conjectures about the enumeration of the permutations avoiding more than three Babson - Steingr\'ımsson patterns (generalized patterns of type $(1,2)$ or $(2,1)$). The avoidance of one, two or three patterns has already been considered. Here, the cases of four and five forbidden patterns are solved and the exact enumeration of the permutations avoiding them is given, confirming the conjectures of Claesson and Mansour. The approach we use can be easily extended to the cases of more than five forbidden patterns.
A 0-1 matrix $M$ contains another 0-1 matrix $P$ if some submatrix of $M$ can be turned into $P$ by changing any number of $1$-entries to $0$-entries. $M$ is $\mathcal{P}$-saturated where $\mathcal{P}$ is a family of 0-1 matrices if $M$ avoids every element of $\mathcal{P}$ and changing any $0$-entry of $M$ to a $1$-entry introduces a copy of some element of $\mathcal{P}$. The extremal function $\operatorname{ex}(n,\mathcal{P})$ and saturation function $\operatorname{sat}(n,\mathcal{P})$ are the maximum and minimum possible weight of an $n\times n$ $\mathcal{P}$-saturated 0-1 matrix, respectiv…
The method we have applied in "A. Bernini, L. Ferrari, R. Pinzani, Enumerating permutations avoiding three Babson-Steingrimsson patterns, Ann. Comb. 9 (2005), 137--162" to count pattern avoiding permutations is adapted to words. As an application, we enumerate several classes of words simultaneously avoiding two generalized patterns of length 3.
We present a combinatorial and computational commutative algebra methodology for studying singularities of Schubert varieties of flag manifolds. We define the combinatorial notion of *interval pattern avoidance*. For "reasonable" invariants P of singularities, we geometrically prove that this governs (1) the P-locus of a Schubert variety, and (2) which Schubert varieties are globally not P. The prototypical case is P="singular"; classical pattern avoidance applies admirably for this choice [Lakshmibai-Sandhya'90], but is insufficient in general. Our approach is analyzed for some common invaria…
