If M is an atoroidal 3-manifold with a taut foliation, Thurston showed that pi_1(M) acts on a circle. Here, we show that some other classes of essential laminations also give rise to actions on circles. In particular, we show this for tight essential laminations with solid torus guts. We also show that pseudo-Anosov flows induce actions on circles. In all cases, these actions can be made into faithful ones, so pi_1(M) is isomorphic to a subgroup of Homeo(S^1). In addition, we show that the fundamental group of the Weeks manifold has no faithful action on S^1. As a corollary, the Weeks manifold does not admit a tight essential lamination, a pseudo-Anosov flow, or a taut foliation. Finally, we give a proof of Thurston's universal circle theorem for taut foliations based on a new, purely topological, proof of the Leaf Pocket Theorem.
We prove that for any orientable connected surface of finite type which is not a a sphere with at most four punctures or a torus with at most two punctures, any homeomorphism of the space of geodesic laminations of this surface, equipped with the Thurston topology, is induced by a homeomorphism of the surface.
We prove two rigidity results for automorphism groups of the spaces ML(S) of measured laminations on a closed hyperbolic surface S and PML(S) of projective measured laminations on this surface. The results concern the homeomorphisms of ML(S) that preserve the geometric intersection between laminations and the homeomorphisms of PML(S) that preserve the zero sets of these intersection functions.
We show that every auto-homeomorphism of the unmeasured lamination space of an orientable surface of finite type is induced by a unique extended mapping class unless the surface is a sphere with at most four punctures or a torus with at most two punctures or a closed surface of genus 2.
We introduce a natural stratification of the space of projective classes of measured laminations on a complete hyperbolic surface of finite area. We prove a rigidity result, namely, the group of self-homeomorphisms of the space of projective measured laminations that preserve such a stratification is in general identified with the extended mapping class group of the corresponding surface. We use this approach to fill a gap in the proof of the rigidity of the action of the extended mapping class group on the unmeasured laminations space.
We propose a program to study groups acting faithfully on S^1 in terms of number of pairwise transverse dense invariant laminations. We give some examples of groups which admit a small number of invariant laminations as an introduction to such groups. Main focus of the present paper is to characterize Fuchsian groups in this scheme. We prove a group acting on S^1 is conjugate to a Fuchsian group if and only if it admits three very-full laminations with a variation of the transversality condition. Some partial results toward a similar characterization of hyperbolic 3-manifold groups which fiber…
We show that for a taut foliation F with one-sided branching of an atoroidal 3-manifold M, one can construct a pair of genuine laminations with solid torus complementary regions which bind every leaf of F in a geodesic lamination. These laminations come from a universal circle, a refinement of the universal circles proposed by Thurston, which maps monotonely and group-equivariantly to each of the circles at infinity of the leaves of the universal cover of F, and is minimal with respect to this property. This circle is intimately bound up with the extrinsic geometry of the leaves of F. In parti…
Thurston showed that the fundamental group of a close atoroidal 3-manifold admitting a co-oriented taut foliation acts faithfully on the circle by orientation-preserving homeomorphisms. This action on the circle is called a universal circle action due to its rich information. In this article, we first review Thurston's theory of universal circles and follow-up work of other authors. We note that the universal circle action of a 3-manifold group always admits an invariant lamination. A group acting on the circle with an invariant lamination is called a laminar group. In the second half of the p…
We give parameterizations of homeomorphisms, quasisymmetric maps and symmetric maps of the unit circle in terms of shear coordinates for the Farey tesselation.
For each $n > 0$ there is a one complex parameter family of homeomorphisms of the circle consisting of linear fractional transformations `conjugated by $z \to z^n$'. We show that these families are free of relations, which determines the structure of `the group of homeomorphisms of finite type'. We also discuss a number of questions regarding factorization for more robust groups of homeomorphisms of the circle in terms of these basic building blocks, and the correspondence between smoothness properties of the homeomorphisms and decay properties of the parameters.
Thurston and Calegari-Dunfield showed that the fundamental group of some tautly foliated hyperbolic 3-manifold acts on the circle in a distinctive way that the action preserves some structure of S^1, so-called a circle lamination. Indeed, a large class of Kleinian groups acts on the circle preserving a circle lamination. In this paper, we are concerned with the converse problem that a group acting on the circle with at least two invariant circle laminations is Kleinian. We prove that a subgroup of the orientation preserving circle homeomorphism group is a Fuchsian group whose quotient orbifold…
We shall show that for a given homeomorphism type and a set of end invariants (including the parabolic locus) with necessary topological conditions which a topologically tame Kleinian group with that homeomorphism type must satisfy, there is an algebraic limit of minimally parabolic, geometrically finite Kleinian groups which has exactly that homeomorphism type and end invariants. This shows that the Bers-Sullivan-Thurston density conjecture follows from Marden's conjecture proved by Agol, Calegari-Gabai combined with Thurston's uniformisation theorem and the ending lamination conjecture prove…
We study the coarse geometry of the moduli space of dilation tori with two singularities and the dynamical properties of the action of the Teichmuller flow on this moduli space. This leads to a proof that the vertical foliation of a dilation torus is almost always Morse-Smale. As a corollary, we get that the generic piecewise affine circle homeomorphism with two break points -with respect to the Lebesgue measure- is Morse-Smale.
Consider a geometrically finite Kleinian group $G$ without parabolic or elliptic elements, with its Kleinian manifold $M=(\H^3\cup Ω_G)/G$. Suppose that for each boundary component of $M$, either a maximal and connected measured lamination in the Masur domain or a marked conformal structure is given. In this setting, we shall prove that there is an algebraic limit $Γ$ of quasi-conformal deformations of $G$ such that there is a homeomorphism $h$ from $\mathrm{Int} M$ to $\H^3/Γ$ compatible with the natural isomorphism from $G$ to $Γ$, the given laminations are unrealisable in $\H^3/Γ$, and the …
In the first part of the paper we describe the complex geometry of the universal Teichmüller space $\mathcal T$, which may be realized as an open subset in the complex Banach space of holomorphic quadratic differentials in the unit disc. The quotient $\mathcal S$ of the diffeomorphism group of the circle modulo Möbius transformations may be treated as a smooth part of $\mathcal T$. In the second part we consider the quantization of universal Teichmüller space $\mathcal T$. We explain first how to quantize the smooth part $\mathcal S$ by embedding it into a Hilbert-Schmidt Siegel disc. This qua…
We show that if M is a hyperbolic 3-manifold which admits a quasigeodesic flow, then pi_1(M) acts faithfully on a universal circle by homeomorphisms, and preserves a pair of invariant laminations of this circle. As a corollary, we show that the Thurston norm can be characterized by quasigeodesic flows, thereby generalizing a theorem of Mosher, and we give the first example of a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold without a quasigeodesic flow, answering a long-standing question of Thurston.
For a given pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism $φ$ of a closed surface $S$, the action of $φ$ on the Teichmüller space $\mathcal T(S)$ preserves the Weil-Petersson symplectic form. We give explicit formulae for two invariant functions $\mathcal T(S)\to \mathbb R$ whose symplectic gradients generate autonomous Hamiltonian flows that coincide with the action of $φ$ at time one. We compute the Poisson bracket between these two functions. This amounts to computing the variation of length of a Hölder cocyle on one lamination along a shear vector field defined by another. For a measurably generic set of la…
Previous work of the author has developed coordinates on bundles over the classical Teichmueller spaces of punctured surfaces and on the space of cosets of the Moebius group in the group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the circle, and this work is surveyed here. Joint work with Dragomir Saric is also sketched which extends these results to the setting of the Teichmueller space of the solenoid of a punctured surface, which is defined here in analogy to Dennis Sullivan's original definition for the case of closed surfaces. Because of relations with the classical modular group, the pu…
The fixed-point index of a homeomorphism of Jordan curves measures the number of fixed-points, with multiplicity, of the extension of the homeomorphism to the full Jordan domains in question. The now-classical Circle Index Lemma says that the fixed-point index of a positive-orientation-preserving homeomorphism of round circles is always non-negative. We begin by proving a generalization of this lemma, to accommodate Jordan curves bounding domains which do not disconnect each other. We then apply this generalization to give a new proof of Schramm's Incompatibility Theorem, which was used by Sch…
Suppose M is a noncompact connected PL 2-manifold and let H(M)_0 denote the identity component of the homeomorphism group of M with the compact-open topology. In this paper we classify the homotopy type of H(M)_0 by showing that {\cal H}(M)_0 has the homotopy type of the circle if M is the plane, an open or half open annulus, or the punctured projective plane. In all other cases we show that H(M)_0 is homotopically trivial.
Geometrization theorem, fibered case: Every three-manifold that fibers over the circle admits a geometric decomposition. Double limit theorem: for any sequence of quasi-Fuchsian groups whose controlling pair of conformal structures tends toward a pair of projectively measured laminations that bind the surface, there is a convergent subsequence. This preprint also analyzes the quasi-isometric geometry of quasi-Fuchsian 3-manifolds. This eprint is based on a 1986 preprint, which was refereed and accepted for publication, but which I neglected to correct and return. The referee's corrections have…
We describe a circle of ideas relating the dynamics of 2-dimensional homeomorphisms to that of 1-dimensional endomorphisms. This is used to introduce a new class of maps generalizing that of Thurston's pseudo-Anosov homeomorphisms.
We determine the bounded cohomology of the group of homeomorphisms of certain low-dimensional manifolds. In particular, for the group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of the circle and of the closed 2-disc, it is isomorphic to the polynomial ring generated by the bounded Euler class. These seem to be the first examples of groups for which the entire bounded cohomology can be described without being trivial. We further prove that, contrary to ordinary cohomology, the diffeomorphisms groups of the circle and of the closed 2-disc have the same bounded cohomology as their homeomorphism gro…
Let $\cT$ be Teichmüller space of a closed surface of genus at least 2. For any point $c\in \cT$, we describe an action of the circle on $\cT\times \cT$, which limits to the earthquake flow when one of the parameters goes to a measured lamination in the Thurston boundary of $\cT$. This circle action shares some of the main properties of the earthquake flow, for instance it satisfies an extension of Thurston's Earthquake Theorem and it has a complex extension which is analogous and limits to complex earthquakes. Moreover, a related circle action on $\cT\times \cT$ extends to the product of two …
Let X be a path-connected topological space admitting a universal cover. Let Homeo(X,a) denote the group of homeomorphisms of X preserving degree one cohomology class a. We investigate the distortion in Homeo(X,a). Let g be an element of Homeo(X,a). We define a Nielsen-type equivalence relation on the space of g-invariant Borel probability measures on X and prove that if a homeomorphism g admits two nonequivalent invariant measures then it is undistorted. We also define a local rotation number of a homeomorphism generalising the notion of the rotation of a homeomorphism of the circle. Then we …
Suppose that f and g are Markov surjections, each defined on a wedge of circles, each fixing the branch point and having the branch point as the only critical value. We show that if the points in the inverse limit spaces associated with f and g corresponding to the branch point are distinguished then these inverse limit spaces are homeomorphic if and only if the substitutions associated with f and g are weakly equivalent. This, and related results, are applied to one-dimensional substitution tiling spaces, one-dimensional unstable manifolds of hyperbolic sets, and inverse limits of tent maps w…
We show that the topological groups $Diff_{+}^{1}(I)$ and $Diff_{+}^{1}(\mathbb{S}^1)$ of orientation-preserving $C^1$-diffeomorphisms of the interval and the circle, respectively, admit finitely generated dense subgroups. We also investigate the question of genericity (in the sense of Baire category) of such finite topological generating sets in related groups. We show that the generic pair of elements in the homeomorphism group $Homeo_+(I)$ generate a dense subgroup of $Homeo_+(I)$. By contrast, if $M$ is any compact connected manifold with boundary other than the interval, we observe that a…
