It is shown that two braids represent transversally isotopic links if and only if one can pass from one braid to another by conjugations in braid groups, positive Markov moves, and their inverses.
We establish some inequalities about the Khovanov-Rozansky cohomologies of braids. These give new upper bounds of the self-linking numbers of transversal links in standard contact $S^3$ which is sharper than the well known bound given by the HOMFLY polynomial. We also introduce a sequence of transversal link invariants, and discuss some of their properties.
In classical knot theory, Markov's theorem gives a way of describing all braids with isotopic closures as links in $\mathbb{R}^3$. We present a version of Markov's theorem for extended loop braids with closure in $B^3 \times S^1$, as a first step towards a Markov's theorem for extended loop braids and ribbon torus-links in $\mathbb{R}^4$.
Extended welded links are a generalization of Fenn, Rimányi, and Rourke's welded links. Their braided counterpart are extended welded braids, which are closely related to ribbon braids and loop braids. In this paper we prove versions of Alexander and Markov's theorems for extended welded braids and links, following Kamada's approach to the case of welded objects.
The notion of free link is a generalized notion of virtual link. In the present paper we define the group of free braids, prove the Alexander theorem that all free links can be obtained as closures of free braids and prove a Markov theorem, which gives necessary and sufficient conditions for two free braids to have the same free link closure. Our result is expected to be useful in study the topology invariants for free knots and links.
A knot type is exchange reducible if an arbitrary closed n-braid representative can be changed to a closed braid of minimum braid index by a finite sequence of braid isotopies, exchange moves and +/- destabilizations. In the manuscript [J Birman and NC Wrinkle, On transversally simple knots, preprint (1999)] a transversal knot in the standard contact structure for S^3 is defined to be transversally simple if it is characterized up to transversal isotopy by its topological knot type and its self-linking number. Theorem 2 of Birman and Wrinkle [op cit] establishes that exchange reducibility impl…
We introduce a new braid-theoretic framework with which to understand the Legendrian and transversal classification of knots, namely a Legendrian Markov Theorem without Stabilization which induces an associated transversal Markov Theorem without Stabilization. We establish the existence of a nontrivial knot-type specific Legendrian and transversal MTWS by enhancing the Legendrian mountain range for the (2,3)-cable of a (2,3)-torus knot provided by Etnyre and Honda, and showing that elementary negative flypes allow us to move toward maximal tb value without having to use Legendrian stabilizatio…
This paper is a presentation, where we compute the HOMFLYPT Skein module of singular links in the 3-sphere. This calculation is based on some results previously proved by Rabenda and the author on Markov traces on singular Hecke algebras, as well as on classical techniques that allow to pass from the framework of Markov traces on Hecke algebras to the framework of HOMFLYPT Skein modules. Some open problems on singular Hecke algebras are also presented.
Using the Fourier expansion of Markov traces for Ariki-Koike algebras over $\mathbb{Q}(q,u_{1},...,u_{e})$, we give a direct definition of the Alexander polynomials for mixed links. We observe that under the corresponding specialization of a Markov parameter, the Fourier coefficients of Markov traces take quite simple form. As a consequence, we show that the Alexander polynomial of a mixed link is essentially equal to the Alexander polynomial of the link obtained by resolving the twisted parts.
We prove a Markov theorem for tame links in a connected closed orientable 3-manifold $M$ with respect to a plat-like representation. More precisely, given a genus $g$ Heegaard surface $Σ_g$ for $M$ we represent each link in $M$ as the plat closure of a braid in the surface braid group $B_{g,2n}=π_1(C_{2n}(Σ_g))$ and analyze how to translate the equivalence of links in $M$ under ambient isotopy into an algebraic equivalence in $B_{g,2n}$. First, we study the equivalence problem in $Σ_g\times [0,1]$, and then, to obtain the equivalence in $M$, we investigate how isotopies corresponding to "slidi…
We give a new proof of Markov's classical theorem relating any two closed braid representations of the same knot or link. The proof is based upon ideas in a forthcoming paper by the authors, "Stabilization in the braid groups". The new proof of the classical Markov theorem is used by Nancy Wrinkle in her forthcoming manuscript "The Markov Theorem for transverse knots".
This survey consists of a detailed proof of Markov's Theorem based on Joan Birman's book "Braids, Links, and Mapping Class Groups" and Carlo Petronio's classes. It was part of an exam project in A.Y. 2016/2017 for the course Knot Theory.
Alexander's and Markov's theorems state that any link type in $R^3$ is represented by a closed braid and that such representations are related by some elementary operations called Markov moves. We generalize the notion of a braid to that in 4-dimensional space and establish an analogue of these theorems.
Let $B_n$ denote the classical braid group on $n$ strands and let the {\em mixed braid group} $B_{m,n}$ be the subgroup of $B_{m+n}$ comprising braids for which the first $m$ strands form the identity braid. Let $B_{m,\infty}=\cup_nB_{m,n}$. We will describe explicit algebraic moves on $B_{m,\infty}$ such that equivalence classes under these moves classify oriented links up to isotopy in a link complement or in a closed, connected, oriented 3--manifold. The moves depend on a fixed link representing the manifold in $S^3$. More precisely, for link complements the moves are: the two familiar move…
In this paper we study the theory of {\it pseudo knots}, which are knots with some missing crossing information, and we introduce and study the theory of {\it pseudo tied links} and the theory of {\it pseudo knotoids}. In particular, we first present a braiding algorithm for pseudo knots and we then introduce the $L$-moves in that setting, with the use of which we formulate a sharpened version of the analogue of the Markov theorem for pseudo braids. Then we introduce and study the theory of {\it tied pseudo links}, that generalize the notion of tied links, and we exploit the relation between t…
In this paper we first give a one-move version of Markov's braid theorem for knot isotopy in $S^3$ that sharpens the classical theorem. Then a relative version of Markov's theorem concerning a fixed braided portion in the knot. We also prove an analogue of Markov's theorem for knot isotopy in knot complements. Finally we extend this last result to prove a Markov theorem for links in an arbitrary orientable 3--manifold.
This article deals with equivalence of links in 3-manifolds of Heegaard genus 2. Starting from a description of such a manifold introduced by Casali et al., that uses 6-tuples of integers and determines a Heegaard decomposition of the manifold, we construct an algorithm (implemented in c++) which allows to find the words in $B_{2, 2n}$, the braid group on 2n strands of a surface of genus 2, that realizes the plat-equivalence for links in that manifold. In this way we extend to the case of genus 2 the result obtained by Cattabriga et al. for genus 1 manifolds. We describe explicitly the words f…
In Riemann geometry, the relations among two transversal submanifolds and global manifold are discussed. By replacing the normal vector of a submanifold with the tangent vector of another submanifold, the metric tensors, Christoffel symbols and curvature tensors of the three manifolds are linked together. When the inner product of the two tangent vectors vanishes, some corollaries of these relations give the most important second fundamental form and Gauss-Codazzi equation in the conventional submanifold theory. As a special case, the global manifold is Euclidean is considered. It is pointed o…
Kashaev and Reshetikhin proposed a generalization of the Reshetikhin-Turaev link invariant construction to tangles with a flat connection in a principal G-bundle over the complement of the tangle. The purpose of this paper is to adapt and renormalize their construction to define invariants of G-links using the semi-cyclic representations of the non-restricted quantum group associated to sl2, defined by De Concini and Kac. Our construction uses a modified Markov trace. In our main example, the semi-cyclic invariants are a natural extension of the generalized Alexander polynomial invariants defi…
Homology of the circle with non-trivial local coefficients is trivial. From this well-known fact we deduce geometric corollaries concerning links of codimension two. In particular, the Murasugi-Tristram signatures are extended to invariants of links formed of arbitrary oriented closed codimension two submanifolds of an odd-dimensional sphere. The novelty is that the submanifolds are not assumed to be disjoint, but are transversal to each other, and the signatures are parametrized by points of the whole torus. Murasugi-Tristram inequalities and their generalizations are also extended to this se…
The Yokonuma-Hecke algebras are quotients of the modular framed braid group and they support Markov traces. In this paper, which is sequel to Juyumaya and Lambropoulou (2007), we explore further the structures of the $p$-adic framed braids and the $p$-adic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras constructed in Juyumaya and Lambropoulou (2007), by means of dense sub-structures approximating $p$-adic elements. We also construct a $p$-adic Markov trace on the $p$-adic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras and we approximate the values of the $p$-adic trace on $p$-adic elements. Surprisingly, the Markov traces do not re-scale …
Let R f = Z[A $\pm$1 ] be the algebra of Laurent polynomials in the variable A and let R a = Z[A $\pm$1 , z 1 , z 2 ,. .. ] be the algebra of Laurent polynomials in the variable A and standard polynomials in the variables z 1 , z 2 ,. .. . For n $\ge$ 1 we denote by VB n the virtual braid group on n strands. We define two towers of algebras {VTL n (R f)} $\infty$ n=1 and {ATL n (R a)} $\infty$ n=1 in terms of diagrams. For each n $\ge$ 1 we determine presentations for both, VTL n (R f) and ATL n (R a). We determine sequences of homomorphisms {$ρ$ f n : R f [VB n ] $\rightarrow$ VTL n (R f)} $\…
Tied links and the tied braid monoid were introduced recently by the authors and used to define new invariants for classical links. Here, we give a version purely algebraic-combinatoric of tied links. With this new version we prove that the tied braid monoid has a decomposition like a semi--direct group product. By using this decomposition we reprove the Alexander and Markov theorem for tied links; also, we introduce the tied singular knots, the tied singular braid monoid and certain families of Homflypt type invariants for tied singular links; these invariants are five-variables polynomials. …
Virtual singular braids are generalizations of singular braids and virtual braids. We define the virtual singular braid monoid via generators and relations, and prove Alexander- and Markov-type theorems for virtual singular links. We also show that the virtual singular braid monoid has another presentation with fewer generators.
In 1997 M.~Khovanov proved that any doodle can be presented as closure of twin, this result is analogue of classical Alexander's theorem for braids and links. We give a description of twins that have equivalent closures, this theorem is analogue of classical Markov theorem.
We develop several applications of the fact that the Yokonuma--Hecke algebra of the general linear group GL is isomorphic to a direct sum of matrix algebras associated to Iwahori--Hecke algebras of type A. This includes a description of the semisimple and modular representation theory of the Yokonuma--Hecke algebras of GL and a complete classification of all the Markov traces for them. Finally, from these Markov traces, we construct 3-variables polynomials which are invariants for framed and classical knots and links, and investigate their properties with the help of the isomorphism.
We construct a new inductive basis of the Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebra. Using it, we provide a new proof of the existence of the Markov trace on the BMW algebras affording the two-variable Kauffman polynomial. We prove also that all the transverse Markov traces on the BMW algebras are determined by the self-linking number, the HOMFLY-PT polynomial and the two-variable Kauffman polynomial.
The aim of this paper is to define two link invariants satisfying cubic skein relations. In the hierarchy of polynomial invariants determined by explicit skein relations they are the next level of complexity after Jones, HOMFLY, Kauffman and Kuperberg's $G_2$ quantum invariants. Our method consists in the study of Markov traces on a suitable tower of quotients of cubic Hecke algebras extending Jones approach.
We describe completely the link invariants constructed using Markov traces on the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras in terms of the linking matrix and the HOMFLYPT polynomials of sublinks.
