The Tango bundle T over P^5 is proved to be the pull-back of the twisted Cayley bundle C(1) via a map f : P^5 --> Q_5 existing only in characteristic 2. The Frobenius morphism F factorizes via such f.
Using f the cohomology of T is computed in terms of F^*(C), Sym^2(C), C and the tensor product of S by C, while these are computed by applying Borel-Bott-Weil theorem.
By machine-aided computation the mimimal resolutions of C and T are given; incidentally the matrix presenting the spinor bundle S over Q_5 is shown.
We define a new class of holomorphic (n-1)-bundles on the n-dimensional complex projective space, that contains the Tango bundles and their stable Horrock's pull-backs; we show that these bundles are invariant under small deformations and that their isomorphism classes correspond to smooth points of moduli spaces.
We study in this paper a new family of stable algebraic vector bundles of rank $ n-1 $ on the complex projective space $\mathbb{P}^{n}$ whose weighted Tango bundles of Cascini \cite{ca} belongs to. We show that these bundles are invariant under a miniversal deformation.
A key result for syzygies of curves is Voisin's proof of Green's conjecture for the canonical embedding of a general curve of any genus. Her primary tools were the Lazarsfeld Mukai bundle on a K3 surface and a representation of Koszul cohomology on the Hilbert scheme of points on the surface. In this note we construct representations of the Koszul complex on Grassmann varieties; Voisin's setup arises as the inverse image of one of the maps. Using a different map, we give a substantially shorter proof of Voisin's result for K3 surfaces of even sectional genus.
In a previous paper we have introduced the notion of geometric directional bundle of a singular space, in order to introduce global bi-Lipschitz invariants. Then we have posed the question of whether or not the geometric directional bundle is stabilised as an operation acting on singular spaces. In this paper we give a positive answer in the case where the singular spaces are subanalytic sets, thus providing a new invariant associated with the subanalytic sets.
The cotangent bundle of a non-uniruled projective manifold is generically nef, due to a theorem of Miyaoka. We show that the cotangent bundle is actually generically ample, if the manifold is of general type and study in detail the case of intermediate Kodaira dimension. Moreover, manifolds with generically nef and ample tangent bundles are investigated as well as connections to classical theorems on vector fields on projective manifolds.
Consider a projective manifold X and suppose that some wedge power of the cotangent bundle contains a subsheaf whose determinant bundle has maximal Kodaira dimension. Then we prove that X is of general type. More generally we compute the Kodaira dimension if the determinant bundle has sufficiently large Kodaira dimension. This is based on the study of the determinant bundle of a quotient of the cotangent bundle of a non-uniruled manifold: this bundle is always pseudo-effective. We apply this to study the universal cover of a projective manifold. Finally we prove the following: if the canonical…
Manin's conjecture predicts an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points of bounded height on a smooth projective variety in terms of its global geometric invariants. The strongest form of the conjecture implies certain inequalities among geometric invariants of the variety and of its subvarieties. We provide a general geometric framework explaining these phenomena, via the notion of balanced line bundles, and prove the required inequalities for a large class of equivariant compactifications of homogeneous spaces.
A Steiner bundle is a vector bundle on projective space arising as the cokernel of the map defined by a matrix of linear forms. These come up in various geometric settings, and by now they are the subject of a considerable literature. Starting with work of Dolgachev and Kapranov from 1993, several authors have considered the question of whether one can recover from the bundle the geometric data used to construct it. Here we prove such Torelli-type statements for the tautological bundles associated to sufficiently positive divisors on any very ample linear series. In an appendix, we give a new …
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group over a perfect field $k$ and $\cG$ a $G$-bundle over a scheme $X/k$. The main aim of this article is to study the motive associated with $\cG$, inside the Veovodsky Motivic categories. We consider the case that $\charakt k=0$ (resp. $\charakt k\geq 0$), the motive associated to $X$ is geometrically mixed Tate (resp. geometrically cellular) and $\cG$ is locally trivial for the Zariski (resp. étale) topology on $X$ and show that the motive of $\cG$ is geometrically mixed Tate. Moreover for a general $X$ we construct a nested filtration on the motive associa…
We reinterpret the residue map for the Brauer group of a smooth variety using a root stack construction and Weil restriction for algebraic stacks, and apply the result to find a geometric representative of for the residue of a Brauer class associated to a conic bundle, or more generally a Brauer-Severi bundle.
In this paper, we introduce a sub-family of the usual generalized Wronskians, that we call geometric generalized Wronskians. It is well-known that one can test linear dependance of holomorphic functions (of several variables) via the identical vanishing of generalized Wronskians. We show that such a statement remains valid if one tests the identical vanishing only on geometric generalized Wronskians. It turns out that geometric generalized Wronskians allow to define intrinsic objects on projective varieties polarized with an ample line bundle: in this setting, the lack of existence of global f…
We give a short, geometric proof of Graham's theorem on positivity in the equivariant cohomology of a flag variety, based on a transversality argument.
We show that geometric syntomic cohomology lifts canonically to the category of Banach-Colmez spaces and study its relation to extensions of modifications of vector bundles on the Fargues-Fontaine curve. We include some computations of geometric syntomic cohomology Spaces: they are finite rank $Q_p$-vector spaces for ordinary varieties, but in the nonordinary case, these cohomology Spaces carry much more information, in particular they can have a non-trivial $C$-rank. This dichotomy is reminiscent of the Hodge-Tate period map for $p$-divisible groups.
Let F be a function field of one variable over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, X a geometrically irreducible smooth projective variety over F, and L a line bundle on X. In this note, we will prove that if the contangent bundle of X is ample and X is non-isotrivial, then there are a proper closed algebraic set Y of X and a constant A > 0 such that h_L(P) <= A d(P) + O(1) for all P \in X(\bar{F}) \ Y(\bar{F}), where h_L(P) is a geometric height of P with respect to L and d(P) is the geometric logarithmic discriminant of P. As corollary of the above height inequality, we can…
This paper is about geometric quantization of the Hitchin system. We quantize a Kahler form on the Hitchin moduli space (which is half the first Kahler form defined by Hitchin) by considering the Quillen bundle as the prequantum line bundle and modifying the Quillen metric using the Higgs field so that the curvature is proportional to the Kahler form. We show that this Kahler form is integral and the Quillen bundle descends as a prequantum line bundle on the moduli space. It is holomorphic and hence one can take holomorphic square integrable sections as the Hilbert space of quantization of the…
We give a geometric characterisation of the topological invariants associated to SO(m,m+1)-Higgs bundles through KO-theory and the Langlands correspondence between orthogonal and symplectic Hitchin systems. By defining the split orthogonal spectral data, we obtain a natural grading of the moduli space of SO(m,m+1)-Higgs bundles.
We construct explicit geometric models for moduli spaces of semi-stable strongly parabolic Higgs bundles over the Riemann sphere, in the case of rank two, four marked points, arbitrary degree, and arbitrary weights. The mechanism of construction relies on elementary geometric and combinatorial techniques, based on a detailed study of orbit stability of (in general non-reductive) bundle automorphism groups on certain carefully crafted spaces. The aforementioned techniques are not exclusive to the case we examine, and this work elucidates a general approach to construct arbitrary moduli spaces o…
Geometric structures on manifolds became popular when Thurston used them in his work on the geometrization conjecture. They were studied by many people and they play an important role in higher Teichmüller theory. Geometric structures on a manifold are closely related with representations of the fundamental group and with flat bundles. Higgs bundles can be very useful in describing flat bundles explicitly, via solutions of Hitchin's equations. Baraglia has shown in his Ph.D. Thesis that Higgs bundles can also be used to construct geometric structures in some interesting cases. In this paper, w…
Let $X$ be a simple normal crossing (SNC) compact complex surface with trivial canonical bundle which includes triple intersections. We prove that if $X$ is $d$-semistable, then there exists a family of smoothings in a differential geometric sense. This can be interpreted as a differential geometric analogue of the smoothability results due to Friedman, Kawamata-Namikawa, Felten-Filip-Ruddat, Chan-Leung-Ma, and others in algebraic geometry. The proof is based on an explicit construction of local smoothings around the singular locus of $X$, and the first author's existence result of holomorphic…
In this paper, we give complex geometric descriptions of the notions of algebraic geometric positivity of vector bundles and torsion-free coherent sheaves, such as nef, big, pseudo-effective and weakly positive, by using singular Hermitian metrics. As an applications, we obtain a generalization of Mori's result. We also give a characterization of the augmented base locus by using singular Hermitian metrics on vector bundles and the Lelong numbers.
These notes are based on a series of five lectures given at the 2009 Villa de Leyva Summer School on Geometric and Topological Methods for Quantum Field Theory. The purpose of the lectures was to give an introduction to differential-geometric methods in the study of holomorphic vector bundles on a compact connected Riemann surface.
This survey intends to present the basic notions of Geometric Invariant Theory (GIT) through its paradigmatic application in the construction of the moduli space of holomorphic vector bundles. Special attention is paid to the notion of stability from different points of view and to the concept of maximal unstability, represented by the Harder-Narasimhan filtration and, from which, correspondences with the GIT picture and results derived from stratifications on the moduli space are discussed.
We study the existence of canonical Kähler metrics on the projectivisation of strictly Mumford semistable holomorphic vector bundles over a complex curve. We also provide an algebro-geometric characterization of these metrics.
Given a compact Kähler manifold, Geometric Invariant Theory is applied to construct analytic GIT-quotients that are local models for a classifying space of (poly)stable holomorphic vector bundles containing the coarse moduli space of stable bundles as an open subspace. For local models invariant generalized Weil-Petersson forms exist on the parameter spaces, which are restrictions of symplectic forms on smooth ambient spaces. If the underlying Kähler manifold is of Hodge type, then the Weil-Petersson form on the moduli space of stable vector bundles is known to be the Chern form of a certain d…
Geometric Invariant Theory gives a method for constructing quotients for group actions on algebraic varieties which in many cases appear as moduli spaces parametrizing isomorphism classes of geometric objects (vector bundles, polarized varieties, etc.). The quotient depends on a choice of an ample linearized line bundle. Two choices are equivalent if they give rise to identical quotients. A priori, there are infinitely many choices since there are infinitely many isomorphism classes of linearized ample line bundles. Hence several fundamental questions naturally arise. Is the set of equivalence…
We systematically analyze a broad class of dual heterotic and F-theory models that give four-dimensional supergravity theories, and compare the geometric constraints on the two sides of the duality. Specifically, we give a complete classification of models where the heterotic theory is compactified on a smooth Calabi-Yau threefold that is elliptically fibered with a single section and carries smooth irreducible vector bundles, and the dual F-theory model has a corresponding threefold base that has the form of a P^1 bundle. We formulate simple conditions for the geometry on the F-theory side to…
In this paper we first show that on projective manifolds (M, ω), there are holomorphic determinant bundles (in the sense of Knusden-Mumford used by Bismut, Gillet, Soule) which play the role of the geometric quantum bundle, namely one for each input data of a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle L of non-trivial Chern class on a compact Kahler manifold Z (with Todd genus non-zero) and a choice of a geometric quantization of (M, ω). Next we further study the generalization of the vortex equations on Kahler 4-manifold which has been studied earlier by Bradlow. We show that when the Kahler 4-manifol…
For conic bundles on a smooth variety (over a field of characteristic $\ne 2$) which degenerate into pairs of distinct lines over geometric points of a smooth divisor, we prove a theorem which relates the Brauer class of the non-degenerate conic on the complement of the divisor to the covering class (Kummer class) of the 2-sheeted cover of the divisor defined by the degenerate conic, via the Gysin homomorphism in etale cohomology. This theorem is the algebro-geometric analogue of a topological result proved earlier.
We study the geometry of D-bundles--locally projective D-modules--on algebraic curves, and apply them to the study of integrable hierarchies, specifically the multicomponent Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) and spin Calogero-Moser (CM) hierarchies. We show that KP hierarchies have a geometric description as flows on moduli spaces of D-bundles; in particular, we prove that the local structure of D-bundles is captured by the full Sato Grassmannian. The rational, trigonometric, and elliptic solutions of KP are therefore captured by D-bundles on cubic curves E, that is, irreducible (smooth, nodal, or c…
