We obtain a geometric construction of a ``standard monomial basis'' for the homogeneous coordinate ring associated with any ample line bundle on any flag variety. This basis is compatible with Schubert varieties, opposite Schubert varieties, and unions of intersections of these varieties. Our approach relies on vanishing theorems and a degeneration of the diagonal ; it also yields a standard monomial basis for the multi-homogeneous coordinate rings of flag varieties of classical type.
A general setting for a standard monomial theory on a multiset is introduced and applied to the Cox ring of a wonderful variety. This gives a degeneration result of the Cox ring to a multicone over a partial flag variety. Further, we deduce that the Cox ring has rational singularities.
Consider the diagonal action of $SL_n(K)$ on the affine space $X=V^{\oplus m}\oplus (V^*)^{\oplus q}$ where $V=K^n, K$ an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic and $m,q>n$. We construct a "standard monomial" basis for the ring of invariants $K[X]^{SL_n(K)}$. As a consequence, we deduce that $K[X]^{SL_n(K)}$ is Cohen-Macaulay. We also present the first and second fundamental theorems for $SL_n(K)$-actions.
We construct the RR varieties as the fiber products of Bott-Samelson varieties over Richardson varieties. We study their homogeneous coordinate rings and standard monomial theory.

The theory of Seshadri stratifications has been developed by the authors with the intention to build up a new geometric approach towards a standard monomial theory for embedded projective varieties with certain nice properties. In this article, we investigate the Seshadri stratification on a Schubert variety arising from its Schubert subvarieties. We show that the standard monomial theory developed in [32] is compatible with this new strategy.
We consider a desingularization Gamma of a Richardson variety X_w^v=X_w \cap X^v in the flag variety Fl(n)=GL(n)/B, obtained as a fibre of a projection from a certain Bott-Samelson variety Z. We then construct a basis of the homogeneous coordinate ring of Gamma inside Z, indexed by combinatorial objects which we call w_0-standard tableaux.
We construct an explicit basis for the coordinate ring of the Bott-Samelson variety Z_i associated to G = GL(n) and an arbitrary sequence of simple reflections i. Our basis is parametrized by certain standard tableaux and generalizes the Standard Monomial basis for Schubert varieties. Our standard tableaux have a natural crystal graph structure.
We generalize Standard Monomial Theory (SMT) to intersections of Schubert varieties and opposite Schubert varieties; such varieties are called Richardson varieties. The aim of this article is to get closer to a geometric interpretation of the standard monomial theory. Our methods show that in order to develop a SMT for a certain class of subvarieties in G/B (which includes G/B), it suffices to have the following three ingredients, a basis for the space of sections of an effective line bundle on G/B, compatibility of such a basis with the varieties in the class, certain quadratic relations in t…
We study standard monomial bases for Richardson varieties inside the flag variety. In general, writing down a standard monomial basis for a Richardson variety can be challenging, as it involves computing so-called defining chains or key tableaux. However, for a certain family of Richardson varieties, indexed by compatible permutations, we provide a very direct and straightforward combinatorial rule for writing down a standard monomial basis. We apply this result to the study of toric degenerations of Richardson varieties. In particular, we provide a new family of toric degenerations of Richard…
We study toric degenerations of opposite Schubert and Richardson varieties inside degenerations of Grassmannians and flag varieties. These degenerations are parametrized by matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels and Zelevinsky. We construct so-called restricted matching field ideals whose generating sets are understood combinatorially through tableaux. We determine when these ideals are toric and coincide with Gröbner degenerations of Richardson varieties using the well established standard monomial theory for Grassmannians and flag varieties.
The Hodge algebra structures on the homogeneous coordinate rings of Grassmann varieties provide semi-toric degenerations of these varieties. In this paper we construct these semi-toric degenerations using quasi-valuations and triangulations of Newton-Okounkov bodies.
Consider the diagonal action of the special orthogonal group on the direct sum of a finite number of copies of the standard representation--the underlying field is assumed to be algebraically closed and of characteristic not equal to two. We construct a "standard monomial" basis for the ring of polynomial invariants for this action. We then deduce, by a deformation argument, our main result that this ring of polynomial invariants is Cohen-Macaulay. We give three applications of this result: (1) the first and second fundamental theorems of invariant theory for the above action; (2) Cohen-Macaul…
Let $σ$ be a simple involution of an algebraic semisimple group $G$ and let $H$ be the subgroup of $G$ of points fixed by $σ$. If the restricted root system is of type $A$, $C$ or $BC$ and $G$ is simply connected or if the restricted root system is of type $B$ and $G$ is adjoint, then we describe a standard monomial theory and the equations for the coordinate ring $k[G/H]$ using the standard monomial theory and the Plücker relations of an appropriate (maybe infinite dimensional) Grassmann variety.

An ideal of a local polynomial ring can be described by calculating a standard basis with respect to a local monomial ordering. However standard basis algorithms are not numerically stable. Instead we can describe the ideal numerically by finding the space of dual functionals that annihilate it, reducing the problem to one of linear algebra. There are several known algorithms for finding the truncated dual up to any specified degree, which is useful for describing zero-dimensional ideals. We present a stopping criterion for positive-dimensional cases based on homogenization that guarantees all…
We propose a general study of standard bases of polynomial ideals with parameters in the case where the monomial order is arbitrary. We give an application to the computation of the stratification by the local Hilbert-Samuel function. Moreover, we give an explicit upper bound for the degree of a standard basis for an arbitrary order and also for the number of the possible affine or local Hilbert-Samuel functions depending on the number of variables and the maximal degree of the given generators.
