Motivated by the problem of Hurwitz equivalence of $Δ^2$ factorization in the braid group, we address the problem of Hurwitz equivalence in the symmetric group, obtained by projecting the $Δ^2$ factorizations into $S_n$. We get $1_{S_n}$ factorizations with transposition factors. Looking at the transpositions as the edges in a graph, we show that two factorizations are Hurwitz equivalent if and only if their graphs have the same weighted connected components. The main result of this paper will help us to compute the "Braid Monodromy Type" invariant. The graph structure gives a weaker but very easy to compute invariant to distinguish between diffeomorphic surfaces which are not deformation of each other.
We investigate the Hurwitz action of the braid group Br_n on the n-fold Cartesian product of Br_3 and determine some stabilisers of its Artin systems. Our algebraic result is complemented by a geometric study of families of plane polynomial coverings of degree 3. Together they lead to characterisations of the set of 'paths realised by degenerations' of the polynomials as defined by Donaldson in 'Polynomials, vanishing cycles and Floer homology'.
In this paper we prove certain Hurwitz equivalence properties in the braid group. Our main result is that every two factorizations of $Δ_n ^2$ where the elements of the factorization are semi-frame are Hurwitz equivalent. The results of this paper are generalization of the results in \cite{B4}. We use a new presentation of the braid group, called the Birman-Ko-Lee presentation, to define the semi-frame structure. The main result of this paper can be applied to compute the BMT invariant of surfaces. The BMT is the class of Hurwitz equivalent factorizations of the central element of the braid gr…
We discuss the equivalence between the categories of certain ribbon graphs and subgroups of the modular group $Γ$ and use it to construct exponentially large families of not Hurwitz equivalent simple braid monodromy factorizations of the same element. As an application, we also obtain exponentially large families of {\it topologically} distinct algebraic objects such as extremal elliptic surfaces, real trigonal curves, and real elliptic surfaces.
In this paper we prove certain Hurwitz equivalence properties of $B_n$. In particular we prove that for $n=3$ every two Artin's factorizations of $Δ_3 ^2$ of the form $H_{i_1} ... H_{i_6}, \quad F_{j_1} ... F_{j_6}$ (with $i_k, j_k \in \{1,2 \}$) where $\{H_1, H_2 \}, \{F_1, F_2 \}$ are frames, are Hurwitz equivalent. The proof provided here is geometric, based on a newly defined frame type. The results will be applied to the classification of algebraic surfaces up to deformation. It is already known that there exist surfaces that are diffeomorphic to each other but are not deformations of eac…
In this paper we prove certain Hurwitz equivalence properties in $B_n$. Our main result is that every two Artin's factorizations of $Δ_n ^2$ of the form $H_{i_1} ... H_{i_{n(n-1)}}, \quad F_{j_1} ... F_{j_{n(n-1)}}$ (with $i_k, j_k \in \{1,...,n-1 \}$), where $\{H_1,...,H_{n-1} \}, \{F_1,...,F_{n-1} \}$ are frames, are Hurwitz equivalent. This theorem is a generalization of the theorem we have proved in \cite{Tz}, using an algebraic approach unlike the proof in \cite{Tz} which is geometric. The application of the result is applied to the classification of algebraic surfaces up to deformation. …
Graber, Harris and Starr proved, when n >= 2d, the irreducibility of the Hurwitz space H^0_{d,n}(Y) which parametrizes degree d coverings of a smooth, projective curve Y of positive genus, simply branched in n points, with full monodromy group S_d (math.AG/0205056). We sharpen this result and prove that H^0_{d,n}(Y) is irreducible if n >= max{2,2d-4} and in the case of elliptic Y if n >= max{2,2d-6}. We extend the result to coverings simply branched in all but one point of the discriminant. Fixing the ramification multiplicities over the special point we prove that the corresponding Hurwitz sp…
In this paper, we prove that the Hurwitz equivalence problem for 1-factorizations in $F_2 \oplus F_2$ is undecidable, and as a consequence, the Hurwitz equivalence problem for $Δ^2$-factorizations in the braid groups $B_n, n\geq 5$ is also undecidable.
We show that if a tuple of Euclidean reflections has a finite orbit under the Hurwitz action of the Artin braid group, then the group generated by these reflections is finite. Humphries has published a similar statement but his proof is irremediably flawed. At the same time as correcting his proof, our proof is much simpler that Dubrovin and Mazocco's proof for triples of reflections.
A formula for factorizations of the full twist in the braid group $Br_{2m}$ depending on any four factorizations of the full twist in $Br_{m}$ is given. Applying this formula, a symplectic 4-manifold $X$ and two isotopic generic coverings $f_i :X\to \mathbb C\mathbb P^2$, branched, respectively, along cuspidal Hurwitz curves $\bar H_i\subset \mathbb C\mathbb P^2$ (without negative nodes) having different braid monodromy factorization types, are constructed. The class of the fundamental groups of the complements of the affine plane Hurwitz curves is described in terms of generators and defining…
We introduce and develop a language of semigroups over the braid groups for a study of braid monodromy factorizations (bmf's) of plane algebraic curves and other related objects. As an application we give a new proof of Orevkov's theorem on realization of a bmf over a disc by algebraic curves and show that the complexity of such a realization can not be bounded in terms of the types of the factors of the bmf. Besides, we prove that the type of a bmf is distinguishing Hurwitz curves with singularities of inseparable types up to $H$-isotopy and $J$-holomorphic cuspidal curves in $\C P^2$ up to s…
We shed some light on the problem of determining the orbits of the braid group action on semiorthonormal bases of Mukai lattices as considered in \cite{GK04} and \cite{GO1}. We show that there is an algebraic (and in particular algorithmic) equivalence between this problem and the Hurwitz problem for integer matrix groups finitely generated by involutions. In particular we consider the case of $K_0(\mathbb P^n) \quad n \geq 4$ which was considered in \cite{GO1} and show that the only obstruction for showing the transitivity of the braid group action on its semiorthonormal bases is the determin…
We present a number of examples to illustrate the use of small quotient dessins as substitutes for their often much larger and more complicated Galois (minimal regular) covers. In doing so we employ several useful group-theoretic techniques, such as the Frobenius character formula for counting triples in a finite group, pointing out some common traps and misconceptions associated with them. Although our examples are all chosen from Hurwitz curves and groups, they are relevant to dessins of any type.
We derive a closed-form expression for all genus 1 Hurwitz numbers, and give a simple new graph-theoretic interpretation of Hurwitz numbers in genus 0 and 1. (Hurwitz numbers essentially count irreducible genus g covers of the sphere, with arbitrary specified branching over one point, simple branching over other specified points, and no other branching. The problem is equivalent to counting transitive factorisations of permutations into transpositions.) These results prove a conjecture of Goulden and Jackson, and extend results of Hurwitz and many others.
Double Hurwitz numbers have at least four equivalent definitions. Most naturally, they count covers of the Riemann sphere by genus g curves with certain specified ramification data. This is classically equivalent to counting certain collections of permutations. More recently, double Hurwitz numbers have been expressed as a count of certain ribbon graphs, or as a weighted count of certain labeled graphs. This note is an expository account of the equivalences between these definitions, with a few novelties. In particular, we give a simple combinatorial algorithm to pass directly between the perm…
We define the tropical moduli space of covers of a tropical line in the plane as weighted abstract polyhedral complex, and the tropical branch map recording the images of the simple ramifications. Our main result is the invariance of the degree of the branch map, which enables us to give a tropical intersection-theoretic definition of tropical triple Hurwitz numbers. We show that our intersection-theoretic definition coincides with the one given by Bertrand, Brugallé and Mikhalkin in the article "Tropical Open Hurwitz numbers" where a Correspondence Theorem for Hurwitz numbers is proved. Thus …
This article is a revised version of the talk I gave at the conference ``Beauville Surfaces and groups'' held in Newcastle in June 2012. It presents some group theoretical methods to give bounds on the number of connected components of the moduli space of surfaces of general type, focusing on some families of regular surfaces isogenous to a product of curves.
An elliptic orbifold is the quotient of an elliptic curve by a finite group. Eskin and Okounkov proved that generating functions for the number of branched covers of an elliptic curve with specified ramification are quasimodular forms for the full modular group $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$. They later generalized this theorem to the enumeration of branched covers of a pillowcase, i.e. the quotient of an elliptic curve by the elliptic involution, proving quasi-modularity for $Γ_1(2)$. We generalize their work to the quotient of an elliptic curve by cyclic groups of orders $N=3$, $4$, $6$, proving quasi-m…
