We prove that the filling order is quadratic for a large class of solvable groups and asymptotically quadratic for all Q-rank one lattices in semisimple groups of R-rank at least 3. As a byproduct of auxiliary results we give a shorter proof of the theorem on the nondistorsion of horospheres providing also an estimate of a nondistorsion constant.

We obtain non-vanishing of group $L^p$-cohomology of Lie groups for $p$ large and when the degree is equal to the rank of the group. This applies both to semisimple and to some suitable solvable groups. In particular, it confirms that Gromov's question on vanishing below the rank is formulated optimally. To achieve this, some complementary vanishings are combined with the use of spectral sequences. To deduce the semisimple case from the solvable one, we also need comparison results between various theories for $L^p$-cohomology, allowing the use of quasi-isometry invariance.
We study post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras (g,n), and prove existence results for the case that one of the Lie algebras is semisimple. We show that for a Lie group $G=\R^{n}\ltimes_ϕ \R^{m}$ with a semisimple action $ϕ$ which has a cocompact discrete subgroup $Γ$, the solvmanifold $G/Γ$ admits a canonical invariant formal (i.e. all products of harmonic forms are again harmonic) metric. We show that a compact oriented aspherical manifold of dimension less than or equal to 4 with the virtually solvable fundamental group admits a formal metric if and only if it is diffeomorphic to a torus or an infra-solvmanifold which is not a nilmanifold.
We construct many examples of Lie groups with compact Levi factor admitting a left-invariant metric with negative Ricci curvature. We start with a Lie algebra with Levi factor su(n) or so(n) acting on an abelian nilradical via the representation on the space of homogeneous polynomials. In the case of su(2) we obtain a more general construction where the nilradical can be any nilpotent Lie algebra. We also prove a general result in the case when the Levi factor is a semisimple Lie algebra of non-compact type.

Let $M$ be a simply connected pseudo-Riemannian homogeneous space of finite volume with isometry group $G$. We show that $M$ is compact and that the solvable radical of $G$ is abelian and the Levi factor is a compact semisimple Lie group acting transitively on $M$. For metric index less than three, we find that the isometry group of $M$ is compact itself. Examples demonstrate that $G$ is not necessarily compact for higher indices. We prove that the asymptotic Assouad-Nagata dimension of a connected Lie group $G$ equipped with a left-invariant Riemannian metric coincides with its topological dimension of $G/C$ where $C$ is a maximal compact subgroup. To prove it we will compute the Assouad-Nagata dimension of connected solvable Lie groups and semisimple Lie groups.
