We present a project of classification of a certain class of bihamiltonian 1+1 PDEs depending on a small parameter. Our aim is to embed the theory of Gromov - Witten invariants of all genera into the theory of integrable systems. The project is focused at describing normal forms of the PDEs and their local bihamiltonian structures satisfying certain simple axioms. A Frobenius manifold or its degeneration is associated to every bihamiltonian structure of our type. The main result is a universal loop equation on the jet space of a semisimple Frobenius manifold that can be used for perturbative reconstruction of the integrable hierarchy. We show that first few terms of the perturbative expansion correctly reproduce the universal identities between intersection numbers of Gromov - Witten classes and their descendents.
In this short note we show how Dubrovin's integrable hierarchies, defined using the Gromov-Witten theory of a closed symplectic manifold, generalizes to Hamiltonian Floer theory. In particular, we show how the required generalization of the PSS isomorphism, relating Gromov-Witten theory and Hamiltonian Floer theory, can be constructed in the framework of Eliashberg-Givental-Hofer's symplectic field theory.
We prove that for any tau-symmetric bihamiltonian deformation of the tau-cover of the Principal Hierarchy associated with a semisimple Frobenius manifold, the deformed tau-cover admits an infinite set of Virasoro symmetries.
We construct a class of infinite-dimensional Frobenius manifolds on the space of pairs of certain even functions meromorphic inside or outside the unit circle. Via a bi-Hamiltonian recursion relation, the principal hierarchies associated to such Frobenius manifolds are found to be certain extensions of the dispersionless two-component BKP hierarchy. Moreover, we show that these infinite-dimensional Frobenius manifolds contain finite-dimensional Frobenius submanifolds as defined on the orbit space of Coxeter groups of types B and D.
Submanifolds of Frobenius manifolds are studied. In particular, so-called natural submanifolds are defined and, for semi-simple Frobenius manifolds, classified. These carry the structure of a Frobenius algebra on each tangent space, but will, in general, be curved. The induced curvature is studied, a main result being that these natural submanifolds carry a induced pencil of compatible metrics. It is then shown how one may constrain the bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies associated to a Frobenius manifold to live on these natural submanifolds whilst retaining their, now non-local, bi-Hamiltonian struc…
Starting from a so-called flat exact semisimple bihamiltonian structures of hydrodynamic type, we arrive at a Frobenius manifold structure and a tau structure for the associated principal hierarchy. We then classify the deformations of the principal hierarchy which possess tau structures.
We consider a certain super extension, called the super tau-cover, of a bihamiltonian integrable hierarchy which contains the Hamiltonian structures including both the local and non-local ones as odd flows. In particular, we construct the super tau-cover of the principal hierarchy associated with an arbitrary Frobenius manifold, and the super tau-cover of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) hierarchy. We also show that the Virasoro symmetries of these bihamiltonan integrable hierarchies can be extended to symmetries of the associated super tau-covers.
Main mathematical applications of Frobenius manifolds are in the theory of Gromov - Witten invariants, in singularity theory, in differential geometry of the orbit spaces of reflection groups and of their extensions, in the hamiltonian theory of integrable hierarchies. The theory of Frobenius manifolds establishes remarkable relationships between these, sometimes rather distant, mathematical theories.
We study critical behaviour and connection problem for a Painleve' 6 equation. We construct solutions of WDVV eqs. using the isomonodromic deformation method and the Painleve' equations. We find algebraic solutions of WDVV and Gromov-Witten invariants of projective space.
This paper is based on the author's talk at 1997 Taniguchi Symposium ``Integrable Systems and Algebraic Geometry''. We consider an approach to the theory of Frobenius manifolds based on the geometry of flat pencils of contravariant metrics. It is shown that, under certain homogeneity assumptions, these two objects are identical. The flat pencils of contravariant metrics on a manifold $M$ appear naturally in the classification of bihamiltonian structures of hydrodynamics type on the loop space $L(M)$. This elucidates the relations between Frobenius manifolds and integrable hierarchies.
We construct a local tri-Hamiltonian structure of the Ablowitz-Ladik hierarchy, and compute the central invariants of the associated bihamiltonian structures. We show that the central invariants of one of the bihamiltonian structures are equal to 1/24, and the dispersionless limit of this bihamiltonian structure coincides with the one that is defined on the jet space of the Frobenius manifold associated with the Gromov-Witten invariants of local CP1. This result provides support for the validity of Brini's conjecture on the relation of these Gromov-Witten invariants with the Ablowitz-Ladik hie…
We prove the genus zero part of the generalized Witten conjecture relating moduli spaces of spin curves to Gelfand-Dickey hierarchies. That is, we show that intersection numbers on the moduli space of stable r-spin curves assemble into a generating function which yields a solution of the semiclassical limit of the KdV_r equations. We formulate axioms for a cohomology class on this moduli space which allow one to construct a cohomological field theory of rank $r-1$ in all genera. In genus zero it produces a Frobenius manifold which is isomorphic to the Frobenius manifold structure on the base o…
For each of the simple Lie algebras $\mathfrak{g}=A_l$, $D_l$ or $E_6$, we show that the all-genera one-point FJRW invariants of $\mathfrak{g}$-type, after multiplication by suitable products of Pochhammer symbols, are the coefficients of an algebraic generating function and hence are integral. Moreover, we find that the all-genera invariants themselves coincide with the coefficients of the unique calibration of the Frobenius manifold of $\mathfrak{g}$-type evaluated at a special point. For the $A_4$ (5-spin) case we also find two other normalizations of the sequence that are again integral an…
We introduce the stack of r-spin maps. These are stable maps into a variety V from n-pointed algebraic curves of genus g, with the additional data of an r-spin structure on the curve. We prove that this stack is a Deligne-Mumford stack, and we define analogs of the Gromov-Witten classes associated to these spaces. We show that these classes yield a cohomological field theory (CohFT) that is the tensor product of the CohFT associated to the usual Gromov-Witten invariants of V and the r-spin CohFT. When r=2, our construction gives the usual Gromov-Witten invariants of V. Restricting to genus zer…
We solve the problem of describing all nonlocal Hamiltonian operators of hydrodynamic type with flat metrics. This problem is also equivalent to the description of all flat submanifolds with flat normal bundle in a pseudo-Euclidean space. It is proved that every such Hamiltonian operator (or the submanifold corresponding to the operator) gives a pencil of compatible Poisson brackets, generates bi-Hamiltonian integrable hierarchies of hydrodynamic type, and also defines a family of integrals in involution. We prove that a natural special class of such Hamiltonian operators (submanifolds) is des…
We review progress on the generalized Witten conjecture and some of its major ingredients. This conjecture states that certain intersection numbers on the moduli space of higher spin curves assemble into the logarithm of the tau function of a semiclassical limit of the r-th Gelfand-Dickey (or KdV_r) hierarchy. Additionally, we prove that tensor products of the Frobenius manifolds associated to such hierarchies admit a geometric interpretation in terms of moduli spaces of higher spin structures. We also elaborate upon the analogy to Gromov-Witten invariants of a smooth, projective variety.
For any finite group G we define the moduli space of pointed admissible G-covers and the concept of a G-equivariant cohomological field theory (G-CohFT), which, when G is the trivial group, reduce to the moduli space of stable curves and a cohomological field theory (CohFT), respectively. We prove that by taking the "quotient" by G, a G-CohFT reduces to a CohFT. We also prove that a G-CohFT contains a G-Frobenius algebra, a G-equivariant generalization of a Frobenius algebra, and that the "quotient" by G agrees with the obvious Frobenius algebra structure on the space of G-invariants, after re…
In this paper we show how the rich algebraic formalism of Eliashberg-Givental-Hofer's symplectic field theory (SFT) can be used to define higher algebraic structures in Hamiltonian Floer theory. Using the SFT of Hamiltonian mapping tori we show how to define a homotopy extension of the well-known Lie bracket and discuss how it can be used to prove the existence of multiple closed Reeb orbits. Furthermore we show how to define the analogue of rational Gromov-Witten theory in the Hamiltonian Floer theory of open symplectic manifolds. More precisely, we introduce a so-called cohomology F-manifold…
In the first part of this paper, we introduce the notion of "cyclic stratum" of a Frobenius manifold $M$. This is the set of points of the extended manifold $\mathbb C^*\times M$ at which the unit vector field is a cyclic vector for the isomonodromic system defined by the flatness condition of the extended deformed connection. The study of the geometry of the complement of the cyclic stratum is addressed. We show that at points of the cyclic stratum, the isomonodromic system attached to $M$ can be reduced to a scalar differential equation, called the "master differential equation" of $M$. In t…
