We study discrete Schroedinger operators $(H_{α,θ}ψ)(n)= ψ(n-1)+ψ(n+1)+f(αn+θ)ψ(n)$ on $l^2(Z)$, where $f(x)$ is a real analytic periodic function of period 1. We prove a general theorem relating the measure of the spectrum of $H_{α,θ}$ to the measures of the spectra of its canonical rational approximants under the condition that the Lyapunov exponents of $H_{α,θ}$ are positive. For the almost Mathieu operator ($f(x)=2λ\cos 2πx$) it follows that the measure of the spectrum is equal to $4|1-|λ||$ for all real $θ$, $λ\ne\pm 1$, and all irrational $α$.
We prove estimates on the Hölder exponent of the density of states measure for discrete Schrödinger operators with potential of the form $V(n) = λ(\lfloor(n+1)β\rfloor - \lfloor nβ\rfloor)$, with $λ$ large enough, and conclude that for almost all values of $β$, the density of states measure is not Hölder continuous.
It is known that the Lyapunov exponent of analytic 1-frequency quasiperiodic cocycles is continuous in cocycle and, when the frequency is irrational, jointly in cocycle and frequency. In this paper, we extend a result of Bourgain to show the same continuity result for multifrequency quasiperiodic $M(2,\mathbb{C})$ cocycles. Our corollaries include applications to multifrequency Jacobi cocycles with periodic background potentials.
We construct discontinuous point of the Lyapunov exponent of quasiperiodic Schrödinger cocycles in the Gevrey space $G^{s}$ with $s>2$. In contrast, the Lyapunov exponent has been proved to be continuous in the Gevrey space $G^{s}$ with $s<2$ \cite{klein,cgyz}. This shows that $G^2$ is the transition space for the continuity of the Lyapunov exponent.
We introduce a notion of $β$-almost periodicity and prove quantitative lower spectral/quantum dynamical bounds for general bounded $β$-almost periodic potentials. Applications include a sharp arithmetic criterion of full spectral dimensionality for analytic quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators in the positive Lyapunov exponent regime and arithmetic criteria for families with zero Lyapunov exponents, with applications to Sturmian potentials and the critical almost Mathieu operator.
We prove Cantor spectrum and almost-sure Anderson localization for quasiperiodic discrete Schrödinger operators $H = \varepsilonΔ+ V$ with potential $V$ sampled with Diophantine frequency $α$ from an asymmetric, smooth, cosine-like function $v \in C^2(\mathbb{T},[-1,1])$ for sufficiently small interaction $\varepsilon \leq \varepsilon_0(v,α)$. We prove this result via an inductive analysis on scales, whereby we show that locally the Rellich functions of Dirichlet restrictions of $H$ inherit the cosine-like structure of $v$ and are uniformly well-separated.
We consider an integer lattice quasiperiodic Schrodinger operator. The underlying dynamics is either the skew-shift or the multi-frequency shift by a Diophantine frequency. We assume that the potential function belongs to a Gevrey class on the multi-dimensional torus. Moreover, we assume that the potential function satisfies a generic transversality condition, which we show to imply a Lojasiewicz type inequality for smooth functions of several variables. Under these assumptions and for large coupling constant, we prove that the associated Lyapunov exponent is positive for all energies, and con…
As an application of the Gordon lemma for orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle, we prove that for a generic set of quasiperiodic Verblunsky coefficients the corresponding two-sided CMV operator has purely singular continuous spectrum. We use a similar argument to that of the Boshernitzan-Damanik result that establishes the corresponding theorem for the discrete Schrödinger operator.
In this paper, we show that one-dimensional discrete multi-frequency quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators with smooth potentials demonstrate ballistic motion on the set of energies on which the corresponding Schrödinger cocycles are smoothly reducible to constant rotations. The proof is performed by establishing a local version of strong ballistic transport on an exhausting sequence of subsets on which reducibility can be achieved by a conjugation uniformly bounded in the $\mathrm{C}^{\ell}$-norm. We also establish global strong ballistic transport under an additional integral condition on the …
An ensemble of quasi-periodic discrete Schrödinger operators with an arbitrary number of basic frequencies is considered, in a lattice of arbitrary dimension, in which the hull function is a realisation of a stationary Gaussian process on the torus. We show that, for almost every element of the ensemble, the quasi-periodic operator boasts Anderson localization with simple pure point spectrum at strong coupling. One of the ingredients of the proof is a new lower bound on the interpolation error for stationary Gaussian processes on the torus (also known as local non-determinism).
In the following we are interested in the spectral gaps of discrete quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators when the frequency is Diophantine, the potential is analytic, and in the subcritical regime. The gap-labelling theorem asserts in this context that each gap has constant rotation number, labeled by some integer. We prove that the size of these gaps decays exponentially fast with respect to their label. This refines a subexponential bound obtained previously by Sana Ben Hadj Amor. Contrary to her approach, which is based on KAM methods, the arguments in the present paper are non-perturbative,…
We prove results about the Hölder continuity of the spectral measures of the extended CMV matrix, given power law bounds of the solution of the eigenvalue equation. We thus arrive at a unitary analogue of the results of Damanik, Killip and Lenz about the spectral measure of the discrete Schrödinger operator.
We study equivariant families of discrete Hamiltonians on amenable geometries and their integrated density of states (IDS). We prove that the eigenspace of a fixed energy is spanned by eigenfunctions with compact support. The size of a jump of the IDS is consequently given by the equivariant dimension of the subspace spanned by such eigenfunctions. From this we deduce uniform convergence (w.r.t. the spectral parameter) of the finite volume approximants of the IDS. Our framework includes quasiperiodic operators on Delone sets, periodic and random operators on quasi-transitive graphs, and operat…
We consider separable 2D discrete Schrödinger operators generated by 1D almost Mathieu operators. For fixed Diophantine frequencies we prove that for sufficiently small couplings the spectrum must be an interval. This complements a result by J. Bourgain establishing that for fixed couplings the spectrum has gaps for some (positive measure) Diophantine frequencies. Our result generalizes to separable multidimensional discrete Schrödinger operators generated by 1D quasiperiodic operators whose potential is analytic and whose frequency is Diophantine. The proof is based on the study of the thickn…
We show for a large class of discrete Harper-like and continuous magnetic Schrodinger operators that their band edges are Lipschitz continuous with respect to the intensity of the external constant magnetic field. We generalize a result obtained by J. Bellissard in 1994, and give examples in favor of a recent conjecture of G. Nenciu.
Recently, Hislop and Marx studied the dependence of the integrated density of states on the underlying probability distribution for a class of discrete random Schrödinger operators, and established a quantitative form of continuity in weak* topology. We develop an alternative approach to the problem, based on Ky Fan inequalities, and establish a sharp version of the estimate of Hislop and Marx. We also consider a corresponding problem for continual random Schrödinger operators on $\R^d$.
We consider the plasmonic eigenvalue problem for a general 2D domain with a curvilinear corner, studying the spectral theory of the Neumann--Poincaré operator of the boundary. A limiting absorption principle is proved, valid when the spectral parameter approaches the essential spectrum. Putting the principle into use, it is proved that the corner produces absolutely continuous spectrum of multiplicity 1. The embedded eigenvalues are discrete. In particular, there is no singular continuous spectrum.
