A successful generalization of phantom map theory to the equivariant case for all compact Lie groups is obtained in this paper.
One of the key observations is the discovery of the fact that homotopy fiber of equivariant completion splits as product of equivariant Eilenberg-Maclane spaces which seems impossible at first sight by the example of Triantafillou.
We generalize theorems of McGibbon-Roitberg, Iriye, and Meier on the relations between phantom maps and rational homotopy, and apply them to provide new calculational examples of the homotopy sets Ph(X, Y ) of phantom maps and the subsets SPh(X, Y ) of special phantom maps.
In the first part, we determine conditions on spectra X and Y under which either every map from X to Y is phantom, or no nonzero maps are. We also address the question of whether such all or nothing behaviour is preserved when X is replaced with V smash X for V finite. In the second part, we introduce chromatic phantom maps. A map is n-phantom if it is null when restricted to finite spectra of type at least n. We define divisibility and finite type conditions which are suitable for studying n-phantom maps. We show that the duality functor W_{n-1} defined by Mahowald and Rezk is the analog of B…
We generalize some results of Gray and McGibbon-Roitberg on relations between phantom maps and rational homotopy to relative phantom maps. Since the $\lim^1$ and the profinite completion techniques do not apply to relative phantom maps, we develop new techniques.
We study the Gray index of phantom maps, which is a numerical invariant of phantom maps. It is conjectured that the only phantom map with infinite Gray index between finite-type spaces is the constant map. We disprove this conjecture by constructing a counter example. We also prove that this conjecture is valid if the target spaces of phantom maps are restricted to simply connected finite complexes. As an application of the counter example we show that $\SNT^{\infty}(X)$ can be non-trivial for some space $X$ of finite type.
We study phantom maps and homology theories in a stable homotopy category S via a certain Abelian category A. We express the group P(X,Y) of phantom maps X -> Y as an Ext group in A, and give conditions on X or Y which guarantee that it vanishes. We also determine P(X,HB). We show that any composite of two phantom maps is zero, and use this to reduce Margolis's axiomatisation conjecture to an extension problem. We show that a certain functor S -> A is the universal example of a homology theory with values in an AB 5 category and compare this with some results of Freyd.
We study the so-called Gray filtration on the set of phantom maps between two spaces. Using both its algebraic characterization and the Sullivan completion approach to phantom maps, we generalize some of the recent results of Le, McGibbon and Strom. We particularly emphasize on the set of phantom maps with infinite Gray index, describing it in an original algebraic way. We furthermore introduce and study a natural filtration on SNT-sets (that is sets of homotopy types of spaces having the same n-type for all n), which appears to have the same algebraic characterization of the Gray one on phant…
The de Bruijn-Erdős theorem states that the chromatic number of an infinite graph equals the maximum of the chromatic numbers of finite subgraphs. Such a determinativeness by finite subobjects appears in the definition of a phantom map which is classical in algebraic topology. The topological method in combinatorics connects these two, which leads us to define the relative version of a phantom map: a map $f\colon X\to Y$ is called a relative phantom map to a map $φ\colon B\to Y$ if the restriction of $f$ to any finite subcomplex of $X$ lifts to $B$ through $φ$, up to homotopy. There are two ki…
We study the existence of essential phantom maps into co-H-spaces, motivated by Iriye's observation that every suspension space $Y$ of finite type with $H_i(Y;\QQ)\neq 0$ for some $i>1$ is the target of essential phantom maps. We show that Iriye's observation can be extended to the collection of nilpotent, finite type co-H-spaces. This work hinges on an enhanced understanding of the connections between homotopy decompositions of looped co-H-spaces and coalgebra decompositions of tensor algebras due to Grbic, Theriault, and Wu.
In this note, we attack a question posed ten years ago by Tsukiyama about the injectivity of the so- called Forgetable map. We show that we can insert the Forgetable map in an exact sequence and that the problem can be reduced to the computation of the sequence which turns out unexpectedly to be related to the phantom map problem and the famous Halperin conjecture in rational homotopy theory.
A phantom map is a potentially nontrivial map which induces the zero map on every homology theory and on homotopy groups. Zabrodsky has shown that in the presence of particular finiteness conditions on spaces $X$ and $Y$ every map $X\to Y$ is a phantom map. More specifically, Zabrodsky essentially requires $Y$ to be a finite CW complex and $X$ to be a Postnikov space. We show Zabrodsky's observations hold under less restrictive finiteness conditions on the spaces $X$ and $Y$, making use of the Zabrodsky lemma and the machinery of resolving classes. As an application we identify, up to extensio…
We study otopy classes of equivariant local maps and prove the Hopf type theorem for such maps in the case of a real finite dimensional orthogonal representation of a compact Lie group.
We present an example of a homotopical localization functor which is not a localization with respect to any set of maps. Our example arises from equivariant homotopy theory. The technique of equivariant cellularization is developed and applied to the proof of the main result.
We begin by showing that in a triangulated category, specifying a projective class is equivalent to specifying an ideal I of morphisms with certain properties, and that if I has these properties, then so does each of its powers. We show how a projective class leads to an Adams spectral sequence and give some results on the convergence and collapsing of this spectral sequence. We use this to study various ideals. In the stable homotopy category we examine phantom maps, skeletal phantom maps, superphantom maps, and ghosts. (A ghost is a map which induces the zero map of homotopy groups.) We show…
Given pointed $CW$-complexes $X$ and $Y$, $\rmph(X, Y)$ denotes the set of homotopy classes of phantom maps from $X$ to $Y$ and $\rmsph(X, Y)$ denotes the subset of $\rmph(X, Y)$ consisting of homotopy classes of special phantom maps. In a preceding paper, we gave a sufficient condition such that $\rmph(X, Y)$ and $\rmsph(X, Y)$ have natural group structures and established a formula for calculating the groups $\rmph(X, Y)$ and $\rmsph(X, Y)$ in many cases where the groups $[X,Ω\widehat{Y}]$ are nontrivial. In this paper, we establish a dual version of the formula, in which the target is the t…
We construct a degree-type otopy invariant for equivariant gradient local maps in the case of a real finite dimensional orthogonal representation of a compact Lie group. We prove that the invariant establishes a bijection between the set of equivariant gradient otopy classes and the direct sum of countably many copies of $\mathbb{Z}$.
A spectral sequence calculating the homology groups of some spaces of maps equivariant under compact group actions is described. For the main example, we calculate the rational homology groups of spaces of even and odd maps $S^m \to S^M$, $m<M$, or, which is the same, the stable homology groups of spaces of non-resultant homogeneous polynomial maps ${\mathbb R}^{m+1} \to {\mathbb R}^{M+1}$ of growing degrees. Also, we find the homology groups of spaces of ${\mathbb Z}_r$-equivariant maps of odd-dimensional spheres for any $r$. As a technical tool, we calculate the homology groups of configurat…
Given a selfmap $f:X\to X$ on a compact connected polyhedron $X$, H. Schirmer gave necessary and sufficient conditions for a nonempty closed subset $A$ to be the fixed point set of a map in the homotopy class of $f$. R. Brown and C. Soderlund extended Schirmer's result to the category of fiber bundles and fiber-preserving maps. The objective of this paper is to prove an equivariant analogue of Brown-Soderlund theorem result in the category of $G$-spaces and $G$-maps where $G$ is a finite group.
Homotopical localizations with respect to a set of maps are known to exist in cofibrantly generated model categories (satisfying additional assumptions). In this paper we expand the existing framework, so that it will apply to not necessarily cofibrantly generated model categories and, more important, will allow for a localization with respect to a class of maps (satisfying some restrictive conditions). We illustrate our technique by applying it to the equivariant model category of diagrams of spaces. This model category is not cofibrantly generated. We give conditions on a class of maps which…
We establish a Quillen equivalence between the homotopy theories of equivariant Segal operads and equivariant simplicial operads with norm maps. Together with previous work, we further conclude that the homotopy coherent nerve is a right-Quillen equivalence from the model category of equivariant simplicial operads with norm maps to the model category structure for equivariant-$\infty$-operads in equivariant dendroidal sets.
In our previous work, a relation between Tsukiyama problem about self homotopy equivalence was found by using a generalization of phantom map. In this note, fundamental result is established for such a generalization. This is the first time one can deal with phantom maps to space not satisfying finite type condition. Application to Forgetful map is also discussed briefly.
We construct an abelian category A(G) of sheaves over a category of closed subgroups of the r-torus G and show it is of finite injective dimension. It can be used as a model for rational $G$-spectra in the sense that there is a homology theory \piA_*: G-spectra/Q --> A(G) on rational G-spectra with values in A(G), and the associated Adams spectral sequence converges for all rational $G$-spectra and collapses at a finite stage.
We study the homotopy types of certain spaces closely related to the spaces of algebraic (rational) maps from the $m$ dimensional real projective space into the $n$ dimensional complex projective space for $2\leq m\leq 2n$ (we conjecture this relation to be a homotopy equivalence). In an earlier article we proved that the homotopy types of the terms of the natural degree filtration approximate closer and closer the homotopy type of the space of continuous maps and obtained bounds that describe the closeness of the approximation in terms of the degrees of the maps. Here we improve the estimates…
Using equivariant obstruction theory we construct equivariant maps from certain classifying spaces to representation spheres for cyclic groups, product of elementary Abelian groups and dihedral groups. Restricting them to finite skeleta constructs equivariant maps between spaces which are related to the topological Tverberg conjecture. This answers negatively a question of Özaydin posed in relation to weaker versions of the same conjecture. Further, it also has consequences for Borsuk-Ulam properties of representations of cyclic and dihedral groups.
The non-equivariant topology of Stiefel manifolds has been studied extensively, culminating in a result of Miller demonstrating that a Stiefel manifold splits stably to a wedge of Thom spaces over Grassmannians. Equivariantly, one can consider spaces of isometries between representations as an analogue to Stiefel manifolds. This concept, however, yields a different theory to the non-equivariant case. We first construct a variation on the theory of the functional calculus before studying the homotopy-theoretic properties of this theory. This allows us to construct the main result; a natural tow…
We extend the Cisinski-Moerdijk-Weiss theory of $\infty$-operads to the equivariant setting to obtain a notion of $G$-$\infty$-operads that encode "equivariant operads with norm maps" up to homotopy. At the root of this work is the identification of a suitable category of $G$-trees together with a notion of $G$-inner horns capable of encoding the compositions of norm maps. Additionally, we follow Blumberg and Hill by constructing suitable variants associated to each of the indexing systems featured in their work.
Let $G$ be a compact Lie group. We prove that if $V$ and $W$ are orthogonal $G$-representations such that $V^G=W^G=\{0\}$, then a $G$-equivariant map $S(V) \to S(W)$ exists provided that $\dim V^H \leq \dim W^H$ for any closed subgroup $H\subseteq G$. This result is complemented by a reinterpretation in terms of divisibility of certain Euler classes when $G$ is a torus.
The results of a previous paper on the equivariant homotopy theory of crossed complexes are generalised from the case of a discrete group to general topological groups. The principal new ingredient necessary for this is an analysis of homotopy coherence theory for crossed complexes, using detailed results on the appropriate Eilenberg-Zilber theory from Tonks' thesis, and of its relation to simplicial homotopy coherence. Again, our results give information not just on the homotopy classification of certain equivariant maps, but also on the weak equivariant homotopy type of the corresponding equ…
We use a well known problem in discrete and computational geometry (partitions of measures by $k$-fans) as a motivation and as a point of departure to illustrate many aspects, both theoretical and computational, of the problem of calculating the obstructions for the existence of equivariant maps. A variety of techniques are introduced and discussed with the emphasis on concrete and explicit calculations. This eventually leads (Theorems 18 and 19) to an almost exhaustive analysis of when such maps do or do not exist in the particular case of interest.
For groups of prime order, equivariant stable maps between equivariant representation spheres are investigated using the Borel cohomology Adams spectral sequence. Features of the equivariant stable homotopy category, such as stability and duality, are shown to lift to the category of modules over the associated Steenrod algebra. The dependence on the dimension functions of the representations is clarified.
A trisp closure map is a special map on the vertices of a trisp T with the property that T collapses onto the subtrisp induced by the image of the map. We study the interaction between trisp closure maps and group operations on the trisp, and give conditions such that the quotient map is again a trisp closure map. Special attention is on the case that the trisp is the nerve of an acyclic category, and the relationship between trisp closure maps and closure operators on posets is studied.
This paper generalizes the concept of index and co-index and some related results for free actions of G = S0 on a paracompact Hausdorff space which were introduced by Conner and Floyd. We define the index and co-index of a finitistic free G-space X, where G = Sd , d = 1 or 3 and prove that the index of X is not more than the mod 2 cohomology index of X. We observe that the index and co-index of a (2n + 1)-sphere (resp. (4n+3)-sphere) for the action of componentwise multiplication of G = S1 (resp. S3) is n. We also determine the orbit spaces of free actions of G = S3 on a finitistic space X wit…
For a given group $G$ and a collection of subgroups $\mathcal F$ of $G$, we show that there exist a left induced model structure on the category of right $G$-simplicial sets, in which the weak equivalences and cofibrations are the maps that induce weak equivalences and cofibrations on the $H$-orbits for all $H$ in $\mathcal F$. This gives a model categorical criterion for maps that induce weak equivalences on $H$-orbits to be weak equivalences in the $\mathcal F$-model structure.
We give an explicit decription for univeral principal U(r)-bundles with periodic map by means of equivariant Stiefel manifolds. We then show that the associated equivariant vector bundle is equivalent to the canonical one given by G. Segal. Finally, we investigate some ideals involved in the equivariant K-theory of this classifying space.

Let G be a compact Lie group. We build a tower of G-spectra over the suspension spectrum of the space of linear isometries from one G-representation to another. The stable cofibres of the maps running down the tower are certain interesting Thom spaces. We conjecture that this tower provides an equivariant extension of Miller's stable splitting of Stiefel manifolds. We provide a cohomological obstruction to the tower producing a splitting in most cases; however, this obstruction does not rule out a split tower in the case where the Miller splitting is possible. We claim that in this case we hav…
In studying the "11/8-Conjecture" on the Geography Problem in 4-dimensional topology, Furuta proposed a question on the existence of Pin(2)-equivariant stable maps between certain representation spheres. In this paper, we present a complete solution to this problem by analyzing the Pin(2)-equivariant Mahowald invariants. As a geometric application of our result, we prove a "10/8+4"-Theorem. We prove our theorem by analyzing maps between certain finite spectra arising from BPin(2) and various Thom spectra associated with it. To analyze these maps, we use the technique of cell diagrams, known re…
