We describe algorithms for two-stage stochastic linear programming with recourse and their implementation on a grid computing platform. In particular, we examine serial and asynchronous versions of the L-shaped method and a trust-region method. The parallel platform of choice is the dynamic, heterogeneous, opportunistic platform provided by the Condor system. The algorithms are of master-worker type (with the workers being used to solve second-stage problems, and the MW runtime support library (which supports master-worker computations) is key to the implementation. Computational results are presented on large sample average approximations of problems from the literature.
In this paper, we analyze in depth a simplicial decomposition like algorithmic framework for large scale convex quadratic programming. In particular, we first propose two tailored strategies for handling the master problem. Then, we describe a few techniques for speeding up the solution of the pricing problem. We report extensive numerical experiments on both real portfolio optimization and general quadratic programming problems, showing the efficiency and robustness of the method when compared to Cplex.
Several well known large scale linear programming decomposition methodologies exist. Benders Decomposition, which covers the case where some small subset of variables link the otherwise separable subproblems. Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition and Lagrangian decompositions, which cover the case where some few constraints link the otherwise separable subproblems, and finally the "Cross-Decomposition" originating from TJ Van Roy which enables one to deal with both linking constraints and linking variables by essentially alternating iteratively between the Benders and the Lagrangian Decomposition. In th…
Bilevel optimization has been widely used in decision-making process. However, there still lacks an efficient algorithm to determine an optimal solution of a bilevel optimization problem, especially for a large-size problem. To bridge the gap, this paper proposes an efficient decomposition algorithm for a general bilevel linear programming(GBLP). The simulation results on large-size testing system demonstrate its correctness and efficiency.
The Benders' decomposition algorithm is a technique in mathematical programming for complex mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problems with a particular block structure. The strategy of Benders' decomposition can be described as a strategy of divide and conquer. The Benders' decomposition algorithm has been employed in a variety of applications such as communication, networking, and machine learning. However, the master problem in Benders' decomposition is still NP-hard, which motivates us to employ quantum computing. In the paper, we propose a hybrid quantum Benders' decomposition algor…
Power systems that need to integrate renewables at a large scale must account for the high levels of uncertainty introduced by these power sources. This can be accomplished with a system of many distributed grid-level storage devices. However, developing a cost-effective and robust control policy in this setting is a challenge due to the high dimensionality of the resource state and the highly volatile stochastic processes involved. We first model the problem using a carefully calibrated power grid model and a specialized hidden Markov stochastic model for wind power which replicates crossing …
A novel algorithm to solve the quadratic programming problem over ellipsoids is proposed. This is achieved by splitting the problem into two optimisation sub-problems, quadratic programming over a sphere and orthogonal projection. Next, an augmented-Lagrangian algorithm is developed for this multiple constraint optimisation. Benefit from the fact that the QP over a single sphere can be solved in a closed form by solving a secular equation, we derive a tighter bound of the minimiser of the secular equation. We also propose to generate a new psd matrix with a low condition number from the matric…
We design inexact proximal augmented Lagrangian based decomposition methods for convex composite programming problems with dual block-angular structures. Our methods are particularly well suited for convex quadratic programming problems arising from stochastic programming models. The algorithmic framework is based on the application of the abstract inexact proximal ADMM framework developed in [Chen, Sun, Toh, Math. Prog. 161:237--270] to the dual of the target problem, as well as the application of the recently developed symmetric Gauss-Seidel decomposition theorem for solving a proximal multi…
We propose a semi-proximal augmented Lagrangian based decomposition method for convex composite quadratic conic programming problems with primal block angular structures. Using our algorithmic framework, we are able to naturally derive several well known augmented Lagrangian based decomposition methods for stochastic programming such as the diagonal quadratic approximation method of Mulvey and Ruszczyński. Moreover, we are able to derive novel enhancements and generalizations of these well known methods. We also propose a semi-proximal symmetric Gauss-Seidel based alternating direction method …
This paper aims to present a fairly accessible generalization of several symmetric Gauss-Seidel decomposition based multi-block proximal alternating direction methods of multipliers (ADMMs) for convex composite optimization problems. The proposed method unifies and refines many constructive techniques that were separately developed for the computational efficiency of multi-block ADMM-type algorithms. Specifically, the majorized augmented Lagrangian functions, the indefinite proximal terms, the inexact symmetric Gauss-Seidel decomposition theorem, the tolerance criteria of approximately solving…
We develop a decomposition method based on the augmented Lagrangian framework to solve a broad family of semidefinite programming problems, possibly with nonlinear objective functions, nonsmooth regularization, and general linear equality/inequality constraints. In particular, the positive semidefinite variable along with a group of linear constraints can be transformed into a variable on a smooth manifold via matrix factorization. The nonsmooth regularization and other general linear constraints are handled by the augmented Lagrangian method. Therefore, each subproblem can be solved by a semi…
It is proved that, for an indefinite quadratic programming problem under linear constraints, any iterative sequence generated by the Proximal DC decomposition algorithm $R$-linearly converges to a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker point, provided that the problem has a solution. Another major result of this paper says that DCA sequences generated by the algorithm converge to a locally unique solution of the problem if the initial points are taken from a suitably-chosen neighborhood of it. To deal with the implicitly defined iterative sequences, a local error bound for affine variational inequalities and nove…
In this paper we examine a symmetric tensor decomposition problem, the Gramian decomposition, posed as a rank minimization problem. We study the relaxation of the problem and consider cases when the relaxed solution is a solution to the original problem. In some instances of tensor rank and order, we prove generically that the solution to the relaxation will be optimal in the original. In other cases, we present interesting examples and approaches that demonstrate the intricacy of this problem.
In this paper, we present a discretization algorithm for finite horizon risk constrained dynamic programming algorithm in [Chow_Pavone_13]. Although in a theoretical standpoint, Bellman's recursion provides a systematic way to find optimal value functions and generate optimal history dependent policies, there is a serious computational issue. Even if the state space and action space of this constrained stochastic optimal control problem are finite, the spaces of risk threshold and the feasible risk update are closed bounded subset of real numbers. This prohibits any direct applications of unco…
There has been widespread interest in the use of grid-level storage to handle the variability from increasing penetrations of wind and solar energy. This problem setting requires optimizing energy storage and release decisions for anywhere from a half-dozen, to potentially hundreds of storage devices spread around the grid as new technologies evolve. We approach this problem using two competing algorithmic strategies. The first, developed within the stochastic programming literature, is stochastic dual dynamic programming (SDDP) which uses Benders decomposition to create a multidimensional val…
In this paper, we discuss the solution of a Quadratic Eigenvalue Complementarity Problem (QEiCP) by using Difference of Convex (DC) programming approaches. We first show that QEiCP can be represented as dc programming problem. Then we investigate different dc programming formulations of QEiCP and discuss their dc algorithms based on a well-known method -- DCA. A new local dc decomposition is proposed which aims at constructing a better dc decomposition regarding to the specific feature of the target problem in some neighborhoods of the iterates. This new procedure yields faster convergence and…
In this work we consider algorithms for reconstructing time-varying data into a finite sum of discrete trajectories, alternatively, an off-the-grid sparse-spikes decomposition which is continuous in time. Recent work showed that this decomposition was possible by minimising a convex variational model which combined a quadratic data fidelity with dynamical Optimal Transport. We generalise this framework and propose new numerical methods which leverage efficient classical algorithms for computing shortest paths on directed acyclic graphs. Our theoretical analysis confirms that these methods conv…
We develop a decomposition algorithm for distributionally-robust two-stage stochastic mixed-integer convex cone programs, and its important special case of distributionally-robust two-stage stochastic mixed-integer second order cone programs. This generalizes the algorithm proposed by Sen and Sherali~[Mathematical Programming 106(2): 203-223, 2006]. We show that the proposed algorithm is finitely convergent if the second-stage problems are solved to optimality at incumbent first stage solutions, and solution to an optimization problem to identify worst-case probability distribution is availabl…
In this paper, we study unit commitment (UC) problems considering the uncertainty of load and wind power generation. UC problem is formulated as a chance-constrained two-stage stochastic programming problem where the chance constraint is used to restrict the probability of load imbalance. In addition to the conventional mixed integer linear programming formulation using Big-M, we present the bilinear mixed integer formulation of chance constraint, and then derive its linear counterpart using McCormick linearization method. Then, we develop a bilinear variant of Benders decomposition method, wh…
The strengthening of linear relaxations and bounds of mixed integer linear programs has been an active research topic for decades. Enumeration-based methods for integer programming like linear programming-based branch-and-bound exploit strong dual bounds to fathom unpromising regions of the feasible space. In this paper, we consider the strengthening of linear programs via a composite of Dantzig-Wolfe and Fenchel decompositions. We provide geometric interpretations of these two classical methods. Motivated by these geometric interpretations, we introduce a novel approach for solving Fenchel su…
Spatiotemporal Pricing and Fleet Management of Autonomous Mobility-on-Demand Networks: A Decomposition and Dynamic Programming Approach with Bounded Optimality Gap
Given an integer dimension K and a simple, undirected graph G with positive edge weights, the Distance Geometry Problem (DGP) aims to find a realization function mapping each vertex to a coordinate in K-dimensional space such that the distance between pairs of vertex coordinates is equal to the corresponding edge weights in G. The so-called discretization assumptions reduce the search space of the realization to a finite discrete one which can be explored via the branch-and-prune (BP) algorithm. Given a discretization vertex order in G, the BP algorithm constructs a binary tree where the nodes…
Makkeh, Theis, and Vicente found in [8] that Cone Programming model is the most robust to compute the Bertschinger et al. partial information decompostion (BROJA PID) measure [1]. We developed a production-quality robust software that computes the BROJA PID measure based on the Cone Programming model. In this paper, we prove the important property of strong duality for the Cone Program and prove an equivalence between the Cone Program and the original Convex problem. Then describe in detail our software and how to use it.\newline\indent
This paper describes an area decomposition and a robust optimization strategy for the planning of large-scale transmission networks considering uncertainty in variable renewable energy (VRE) and hydropower generation. The strategy is illustrated with a study of Brazil's power grid expansion from 2027 to 2036. The country's network has over 10 thousand buses and 14 thousand circuits and covers an area equivalent to the USA. A clustering scheme based on bus marginal costs is used to decompose the grid into seven regions. Each regional planning is then solved by a heuristic and Benders decomposit…
We apply logic-based Benders decomposition (LBBD) to two-stage stochastic planning and scheduling problems in which the second-stage is a scheduling task. We solve the master problem with mixed integer/linear programming and the subproblem with constraint programming. As Benders cuts, we use simple nogood cuts as well as analytical logic-based cuts we develop for this application. We find that LBBD is computationally superior to the integer L-shaped method, with a branch-and-check variant of LBBD faster by several orders of magnitude, allowing significantly larger instances to be solved. This …
Power distribution in remote communities often depends on off-grid microgrids. In order to address the reliability challenges for these microgrids, we develop a mathematical model for topology design, capacity planning, and operation of distributed energy resources in microgrids that includes N-1 security analysis. Due to the prohibitive size of the optimization problem, we develop a rolling-horizon algorithm that is combined with scenario-based decomposition to efficiently solve the model. We demonstrate the efficiency of our algorithm on an adapted IEEE test network and a real network from a…
The Mean-Variance-Skewness-Kurtosis (MVSK) portfolio optimization model is a quartic nonconvex polynomial minimization problem over a polytope, which can be formulated as a Difference-of-Convex (DC) program. In this manuscript, we investigate four DC programming approaches for solving the MVSK model. First, two DC formulations based on the projective DC decomposition and the Difference-of-Convex-Sums-of-Squares (DC-SOS) decomposition are established, where the second one is novel. Then, DCA is applied to solve these DC formulations. The convergence analysis of DCA for the MVSK model is establi…
We address the Interval Data Min-Max Regret 0-1 Integer Linear Programming problem (MMR-ILP), a variant of the 0-1 Integer Linear Programming problem where the objective function coefficients are uncertain. We solve MMR-ILP using a Benders-like Decomposition Algorithm and two metaheuristics for min-max regret problems with interval data. Computational experiments developed on variations of MIPLIB instances show that the heuristics obtain good results in a reasonable computational time when compared to the Benders-like Decomposition algorithm.
We present the implementation of a trust-region Newton algorithm ExaTron for bound-constrained nonlinear programming problems, fully running on multiple GPUs. Without data transfers between CPU and GPU, our implementation has achieved the elimination of a major performance bottleneck under a memory-bound situation, particularly when solving many small problems in batch. We discuss the design principles and implementation details for our kernel function and core operations. Different design choices are justified by numerical experiments. By using the application of distributed control of altern…
This paper extends our previous work in [1],[2], on optimal scheduling of autonomous vehicle arrivals at intersections, from one to a grid of intersections. A scalable distributed Mixed Integer Linear Program (MILP) is devised that solves the scheduling problem for a grid of intersections. A computational control node is allocated to each intersection and regularly receives position and velocity information from subscribed vehicles. Each node assigns an intersection access time to every subscribed vehicle by solving a local MILP. Neighboring intersections will coordinate with each other in rea…
Chicharro (2017) introduced a procedure to determine multivariate partial information measures within the maximum entropy framework, separating unique, redundant, and synergistic components of information. Makkeh, Theis, and Vicente (2018) formulated the latter trivariate partial information measure as Cone Programming. In this paper, we present MAXENT3D_PID, a production-quality software that computes the trivariate partial information measure based on the Cone Programming model. We describe in detail our software, explain how to use it, and perform some experiments reflecting its accuracy in…
Minimum flow decomposition (MFD) -- the problem of finding a minimum set of weighted source-to-sink paths that perfectly decomposes a flow -- is a classical problem in Computer Science, and variants of it are powerful models in different fields such as Bioinformatics and Transportation. Even on acyclic graphs, the problem is NP-hard, and most practical solutions have been via heuristics or approximations. While there is an extensive body of research on acyclic graphs, currently, there is no \emph{exact} solution on graphs with cycles. In this paper, we present the first ILP formulation for thr…
Scheduling a residential building short-term to optimize the electricity bill can be difficult with the inclusion of capacity-based grid tariffs. Scheduling the building based on a proposed measured-peak (MP) grid tariff, which is a cost based on the highest peak power over a period, requires the user to consider the impact the current decision-making has in the future. Therefore, the authors propose a mathematical model using stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) that tries to represent the long-term impact of current decision-making. The SDP algorithm calculates non-linear expected future cos…
When stochastic control problems do not possess separability and/or monotonicity, the dynamic programming pioneered by Bellman in 1950s fails to work as a time-decomposition solution method. Such cases have posted a great challenge to the control society in both theoretical foundation and solution methodologies for many years. With the help of the progressive hedging algorithm proposed by Rockafellar and Wets in 1991, we develop a novel scenario-decomposition solution framework for stochastic control problems which could be nonseparable and/or non-monotonic, thus extending the reach of stochas…
