Article is devoted to the Examples 2 and 3 of the symplectic solvable Lie groups $R$ with some special cohomological properties, which have been constructed by Benson and Gordon. But they are not succeeded in constructing corresponding compact forms for symplectic structures on these Lie groups. Recently A.Tralle proved that there is no compact form in the Example 3. But his proof is rather complicated and uses some very special topological methods.
We propose much more simpler (and purely algebraic) method to prove the main result of the Tralle's paper. Moreover we prove that for Example 2 there is no compact form too. But it appears that some modification of the construction of the Example 2 gives some other example of a solvable Lie group $R^{\prime}$ with the same cohomological properties as $R$, but with a compact form.
We compute the homotopy type of the space of T^n-equivariant symplectic embeddings from the standard 2n-dimensional ball of some fixed radius into a 2n-dimensional symplectic-toric manifold M, and use this computation to define a Z-valued step function on the positive real line which is an invariant of the symplectic-toric type of M. We conclude with a discussion of the partially equivariant case of this result.
This contains a list of (mostly very minor) corrections to the book Introduction to Symplectic Topology, Clarendon Press, Oxford, (1995), together with rewritten versions of two lemmas and some additional comments.
The main purpose of this paper is to give a topological and symplectic classification of completely integrable Hamiltonian systems in terms of characteristic classes and other local and global invariants.
From the cohomological point of view the symplectomorphism group $Sympl (M)$ of a symplectic manifold is `` tamer'' than the diffeomorphism group. The existence of invariant polynomials in the Lie algebra $\frak {sympl }(M)$, the symplectic Chern-Weil theory, and the existence of Chern-Simons-type secondary classes are first manifestations of this principles. On a deeper level live characteristic classes of symplectic actions in periodic cohomology and symplectic Hodge decompositions. The present paper is called to introduce theories and constructions listed above and to suggest numerous concr…
We generalize the "hamiltonian topology" on hamiltonian isotopies to an intrinsic "symplectic topology" on the space of symplectic isotopies. We use it to define the group $SSympeo(M,ω)$ of strong symplectic homeomorphisms, which generalizes the group $Hameo(M,ω)$ of hamiltonian homeomorphisms introduced by Oh and Muller. The group $SSympeo(M,ω)$ is arcwise connected, is contained in the identity component of $Sympeo(M,ω)$; it contains $Hameo(M,ω)$ as a normal subgroup and coincides with it when $M$ is simply connected. Finally its commutator subgroup $[SSympeo(M,ω),SSympeo(M,ω)]$ is contained…
We study in this paper the rational homotopy type of the space of symplectic embeddings of the standard ball $B^4(c) \subset \R^4$ into 4-dimensional rational symplectic manifolds. We compute the rational homotopy groups of that space when the 4-manifold has the form $M_λ= (S^2 \times S^2, μω_0 \oplus ω_0)$ where $ω_0$ is the area form on the sphere with total area 1 and $μ$ belongs to the interval $[1,2]$. We show that, when $μ$ is 1, this space retracts to the space of symplectic frames, for any value of $c$. However, for any given $1 < μ< 2$, the rational homotopy type of that space changes…
An explicit example of an exotic symplectic $\mathbf{R}^6$ is given. Together with an earlier known example on $\mathbf{R}^4$, this yields an explicit exotic symplectic form on $\mathbf{R}^{2n}$ for all $n\geq2$.
Groupoids are mathematical structures able to describe symmetry properties more general than those described by groups. They were introduced (and named) by H. Brandt in 1926. Around 1950, Charles Ehresmann used groupoids with additional structures (topological and differentiable) as essential tools in topology and differential geometry. In recent years, Mickael Karasev, Alan Weinstein and Stanisław Zakrzewski independently discovered that symplectic groupoids can be used for the construction of noncommutative deformations of the algebra of smooth functions on a manifold, with potential applica…
I construct the real counterparts (which I call Borel-Bott classes) of the R/Z classes constructed in "Characteristic classes in symplectic topology", to appear, in the cohomology of volume-preserving and symplectomorhisms of a compact (symplectic) manifold.I show that, for the symplectic action of the mapping class group in the moduli space of stable vector bundles over a Riemann surface, the restriction of the first constructed class from the symplectomorphism group gives a generator for the second (bounded) cohomology of the mapping class group.
This is the first in a series of papers dedicated to the study of Poisson manifolds of compact types (PMCTs). This notion encompasses several classes of Poisson manifolds defined via properties of their symplectic integrations. In this first paper we establish some fundamental properties of PMCTs, which already show that they are the analogues of compact symplectic manifolds, thus placing them in a prominent position among all Poisson manifolds. For instance, their Poisson cohomology behaves very much like the de Rham cohomology of compact symplectic manifolds (Hodge decomposition, non-degener…
Classical mechanical systems are modeled by a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$, and their symmetries, encoded in the action of a Lie group $G$ on $M$ by diffeomorphisms that preserves $ω$. These actions, which are called "symplectic", have been studied in the past forty years, following the works of Atiyah, Delzant, Duistermaat, Guillemin, Heckman, Kostant, Souriau, and Sternberg in the 1970s and 1980s on symplectic actions of compact abelian Lie groups that are, in addition, of "Hamiltonian" type, i.e. they also satisfy Hamilton's equations. Since then a number of connections with combinatorics, f…
We exhibit two three-parameter families of locally conformal symplectic forms on the solvmanifold $M_{n,k}$ considered in [1], and show, using the Hodge-de Rham theory for the Lichnerowicz cohomology that that they are not $d_ω$ exact, i.e. their Lichnerowicz classes are non-trivial (Theorem 1). This has several important geometric consequences (corollary 2, 3). This also implies that the group of automorphisms of the corresponding locally conformal symplectic structures behaves much like the group of symplectic diffeomorphisms of compact symplectic manifolds. We initiate the classification of…
We describe the deformation cohomology of a symplectic groupoid, and use it to study deformations via Moser path methods, proving a symplectic groupoid version of the Moser Theorem. Our construction uses the deformation cohomologies of Lie groupoids and of multiplicative forms, and we prove that in the symplectic case, deformation cohomology of both the underlying groupoid and of the symplectic groupoid have de Rham models in terms of differential forms. We use the de Rham model, which is intimately connected to the Bott-Shulman-Stasheff double complex, to compute deformation cohomology in sev…
Locally conformal symplectic (l.c.s.) groupoids are introduced as a generalization of symplectic groupoids. We obtain some examples and we prove that l.c.s. groupoids are examples of Jacobi groupoids in the sense of \cite{IM}. Finally, we describe the Lie algebroid of a l.c.s. groupoid.
We describe topological T-duality and Poisson-Lie T-duality in terms of QP (differential graded symplectic) manifolds and their canonical transformations. Duality is mediated by a QP-manifold on doubled non-abelian "correspondence" space, from which we can perform mutually dual symplectic reductions, where certain canonical transformations play a vital role. In the presence of spectator coordinates, we show how the introduction of "bibundle" structure on correspondence space realises changes in the global fibration structure under Poisson-Lie duality. Our approach can be directly translated to…
Contact manifolds are odd-dimensional smooth manifolds endowed with a maximally non-integrable field of hyperplanes. They are intimately related to symplectic manifolds, i.e. even-dimensional smooth manifolds endowed with a closed non-degenerate 2-form. Although in symplectic topology a famous bi-invariant metric, the Hofer metric, has been studied since more than 20 years ago, it is only recently that some somehow analogous bi-invariant metrics have been discovered on the group of diffeomorphisms that preserve a contact structure. In this expository article I will review some constructions of…
