We prove that in positive characteristic, the Manin-Mumford conjecture implies the Mordell-Lang conjecture, in the situation where the ambient variety is an abelian variety defined over the function field of a smooth curve over a finite field and the relevant group is a finitely generated group. In particular, in the setting of the last sentence, we provide a proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture, which does not depend on tools coming from model theory.
We here aim to complete our model-theoretic account of the function field Mordell-Lang conjecture, avoiding appeal to dichotomy theorems for Zariski geometries, where we now consider the general case of semiabelian varieties. This is a contribution to the classification problem for dp-minimal expansions of $(\mathbb{Z},+)$. Let $S$ be a dense cyclic group order on $(\mathbb{Z},+)$. We use results on "dense pairs" to construct uncountably many dp-minimal expansions of $(\mathbb{Z},+,S)$. This paper proposes a new setup for studying pairs of structures. This new framework includes many of the previously studied classes of pairs, such as dense pairs of o-minimal structures, lovely pairs, fields with Mann groups, and $H$-structures, but also includes new ones, such as pairs consisting of a real closed field and a pseudo real closed subfield, and pairs of vector spaces with different fields of scalars. We use the larger generality of this framework to answer three concrete open questions raised in earlier work on this subject.
