The classical representation of Hamiltonian systems in terms of action-angle variables are defined for simply connected domains such as an interior of a homoclinic orbit. On this basis methods of (local) perturbations leading, in particular, to chaotic systems have been studied in literature.
We are describing a new method for constructing global action-angle variables and successive perturbations based on a topological covering of the phase space. The method is demonstrated for representative example of the Duffing system.
We present a numerical method for computing optimal transition pathways and transition rates in systems of stochastic differential equations (SDEs). In particular, we compute the most probable transition path of stochastic equations by minimizing the effective action in a corresponding deterministic Hamiltonian system. The numerical method presented here involves using an iterative scheme for solving a two-point boundary value problem for the Hamiltonian system. We validate our method by applying it to both continuous stochastic systems, such as nonlinear oscillators governed by the Duffing eq…
We prove a KAM-type result for the persistence of two-dimensional invariant tori in perturbations of integrable action-angle-angle maps with degeneracy, satisfying the intersection property. Such degenerate action-angle-angle maps arise upon generic perturbation of three-dimensional volume-preserving vector fields, which are invariant under volume-preserving action of $S^1$ when there is no motion in the group action direction for the unperturbed map. This situation is analogous to degeneracy in Hamiltonian systems. The degenerate nature of the map and the unequal number of action and angle va…
In this article we prove an action-angle theorem for b-integrable systems on b-Poisson manifolds improving the action-angle theorem contained in [LMV11] for general Poisson manifolds in this setting. As an application, we prove a KAM-type theorem for b-Poisson manifolds.
A time-dependent completely integrable Hamiltonian system is proved to admit the action-angle coordinates around any regular instantly compact invariant manifold. Written relative to these coordinates, its Hamiltonian and first integrals are functions only of action coordinates.
We proved a KAM theorem on existence of invariant tori in generalized Hamiltonian systems without action-angle variables. It is a generalization of the result of de la Llave et al. [Llave, 2005] that deals with canonical Hamiltonian system.
The main purpose of this paper is to show the existence of action-angle variables for integrable Hamiltonian systems on Dirac manifolds under some natural regularity and compactness conditions, using the torus action approach. We show that the Liouville torus actions of general integrable dynamical systems have the structure-preserving property with respect to any underlying geometric structure of the system, and deduce the existence of action-angle variables from this property. We also discover co-affine structures on manifolds as a by-product of our study of action-angle variables. 22 pages.
We consider the one degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system defined by the Morse potential energy function (the "Morse oscillator"). We use the geometry of the level sets to construct explicit expressions for the trajectories as a function of time, their period for the bounded trajectories, and action-angle variables. We use these trajectories to prove sufficient conditions for chaotic dynamics, in the sense of Smale horseshoes, for the time-periodically perturbed Morse oscillator using a Melnikov type approach.
We proved the existence of invariant tori in differentiable Hamiltonian vector fields without action-angle variables. It is a generalization of the result of [Llave, 2005] that deals with analytic vector fields.
The obstruction to the existence of global action-angle coordinates of Abelian and noncommutative (non-Abelian) completely integrable systems with compact invariant submanifolds has been studied. We extend this analysis to the case of noncompact invariant submanifolds.
We proved a parametrized KAM theorem in Hamiltonian system which has differentiable Hamiltonian without action-angle coordinates. It is a generalization of the result of [Llave et al. 2005] that deals with real analytic Hamiltonians.
We consider a 1D mechanical system $$\bar {\mathtt H}(\mathtt P,\mathtt Q)=\mathtt P^2+\bar {\mathtt G}(\mathtt Q)$$ in action-angle variable $(\mathtt P,\mathtt Q)$ where $\bar {\mathtt G}$ is a $2π$-periodic analytic function with non degenerate critical points. Then, we consider a small analytic perturbation of $\bar {\mathtt H}$ of the form $${\mathtt H}^*(\mathtt P,\mathtt Q;\hat{\mathtt P}) = \mathtt P^2+\bar {\mathtt G}(\mathtt Q)+ η{\mathtt F} (\mathtt P,\mathtt Q;\hat{\mathtt P})=:\mathtt P^2 + {\mathtt G}^*(\mathtt P,\mathtt Q;\hat{\mathtt P})\,, \qquad η\ll 1\ ,$$ where the perturbe…
In this paper we develop a general conceptual approach to the problem of existence of action-angle variables for dynamical systems, which establishes and uses the fundamental conservation property of associated torus actions: anything which is preserved by the system is also preserved by the associated torus actions. This approach allows us to obtain, among other things: a) the shortest and most conceptual easy to understand proof of the classical Arnold--Liouville--Mineur theorem; b) basically all known results in the literature about the existence of action-angle variables in various context…
A nonrelativistic particle on a circle and subject to a cos^{-2}(k phi) potential is related to the two-dimensional (dihedral) Coxeter system I_2(k), for k in N. For such `dihedral systems' we construct the action-angle variables and establish a local equivalence with a free particle on the circle. We perform the quantization of these systems in the action-angle variables and discuss the supersymmetric extension of this procedure. By allowing radial motion one obtains related two-dimensional systems, including A_2, BC_2 and G_2 three-particle rational Calogero models on R, which we also analyz…
For asymptotically periodic systems, a powerful (phase) reduction of the dynamics is obtained by computing the so-called isochrons, i.e. the sets of points that converge toward the same trajectory on the limit cycle. Motivated by the analysis of excitable systems, a similar reduction has been attempted for non-periodic systems admitting a stable fixed point. In this case, the isochrons can still be defined but they do not capture the asymptotic behavior of the trajectories. Instead, the sets of interest-that we call isostables-are defined in literature as the sets of points that converge towar…
We study the existence of real-analytic first integrals and real-analytic integrability for perturbations of integrable systems in the sense of Bogoyavlenskij including non-Hamiltonian ones. We especially assume that there exists a family of periodic orbits on a regular level set of the first integrals having a connected and compact component and give sufficient conditions for nonexistence of the same number of real-analytic first integrals in the perturbed systems as the unperturbed ones and for their real-analytic nonintegrability near the level set such that the first integrals and commutat…
We study the classical Rajeev-Ranken model, a Hamiltonian system with three degrees of freedom describing nonlinear continuous waves in a 1+1-dimensional nilpotent scalar field theory pseudodual to the SU(2) principal chiral model. While it loosely resembles the Neumann and Kirchhoff models, its equations may be viewed as the Euler equations for a centrally extended Euclidean algebra. The model has a Lax pair and r-matrix leading to four generically independent conserved quantities in involution, two of which are Casimirs. Their level sets define four-dimensional symplectic leaves on which the…
