Interacting systems of particles with generalized statistics are considered on both classical and quantum level. It is shown that all possible quantum states and corresponding processes can be represented in terms of certain specific categories. The corresponding Fock space representation is discussed. The problem of existence of well--defined scalar product is considered. It is shown that commutation relations corresponding to a system with generalized statistics can be constructed from relations corresponding to Bolzman statistics.
We show that all isomorphism classes of even rank Tambara-Yamagami categories arise as $\mathbb{Z}_2$-twisted representations of conformal nets. As a consequence, we show that their Drinfel'd centers are realized by (generalized) orbifolds of conformal nets associated with (self-dual) lattices. The quantum double subfactors of even rank Tambara-Yamagami categories are Bisch-Haagerup subfactors and we describe their (dual) principal graphs. For every abelian group of odd order the Drinfel'd centers of the associated Tambara-Yamagami categories give a fusion ring generalizing the Verlinde ring $…
Inspired by quantum information theory, we look for representations of the braid groups $B_n$ on $V^{\otimes (n+m-2)}$ for some fixed vector space $V$ such that each braid generator $σ_i, i=1,...,n-1,$ acts on $m$ consecutive tensor factors from $i$ through $i+m-1$. The braid relation for $m=2$ is essentially the Yang-Baxter equation, and the cases for $m>2$ are called generalized Yang-Baxter equations. We observe that certain objects in ribbon fusion categories naturally give rise to such representations for the case $m=3$. Examples are given from the Ising theory (or the closely related $SU(…
An algebraic formalism for the study of interacting particle systems is developed. Particle processes are described in terms of the category theory. The problem for the unique description of these processes is discussed. Categories relevant for this subject are described. The concept of generalized transmutations of interacting particle systems is considered. The connection with a system with some generalized statistics is explained.
We describe the structure of a generalized near-group fusion category and present an example of this class of fusion categories which arises from the extension of a Fibonacci category. We then classify slightly degenerate generalized near-group fusion categories. We also prove a structure result for braided generalized Tambara-Yamagami fusion categories.
We classify certain $\mathbb{Z}_2 $-graded extensions of generalized Haagerup categories in terms of numerical invariants satisfying polynomial equations. In particular, we construct a number of new examples of fusion categories, including: $\mathbb{Z}_2 $-graded extensions of $\mathbb{Z}_{2n} $ generalized Haagerup categories for all $n \leq 5 $; $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2 $-graded extensions of the Asaeda-Haagerup categories; and extensions of the $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2 $ generalized Haagerup category by its outer automorphism group $A_4 $. The construction uses endomorphis…
We introduce Turaev bicategories and Turaev pseudofunctors. On the one hand, they generalize the notions of Turaev categories (and Turaev functors), introduced at the turn of the millennium and originally called "crossed group categories" by Turaev himself, and the notions of bicategories and pseudofunctors, on the other. For bimonads in 2-categories, which we defined in one of our previous papers, we introduce generalized Yetter-Drinfel`d modules in 2-categories. These generalize to the 2-categorical setting the generalized Yetter-Drinfel`d modules (over a field) of Panaite and Staic, and thu…
A collection of brilliant and original unfinished ideas by Wladyslaw Marcinek (1952-2003) in particle interactions, categorical approach to generalized statistics, qubits and quantum logic, entwined operators, cobordisms and noncommutative Fock space.
Fusion rules generalize groups by allowing multivalued multiplication. Groups are fusion rules of simple current index 1. We classify nilpotent (in the sense of Gelaki and Nikshych) fusion rules of simple current index 2, and characterize the associated fusion categories.
By viewing Clifford algebras as algebras in some suitable symmetric Gr-categories, Albuquerque and Majid were able to give a new derivation of some well known results about Clifford algebras and to generalize them. Along the same line, Bulacu observed that Clifford algebras are weak Hopf algebras in the aforementioned categories and obtained other interesting properties. The aim of this paper is to study generalized Clifford algebras in a similar manner and extend the results of Albuquerque, Majid and Bulacu to the generalized setting. In particular, by taking full advantage of the gauge trans…
Pursuing a generalization of group symmetries of modular categories to category symmetries in topological phases of matter, we study linear Hopf monads. The main goal is a generalization of extension and gauging group symmetries to category symmetries of modular categories, which include also categorical Hopf algebras as special cases. As an application, we propose an analogue of the classification of finite simple groups to modular categories, where we define simple modular categories as the prime ones without any nontrivial normal algebras.
Given a weight-one element $u$ of a vertex operator algebra $V$, we construct an automorphism of the category of generalized $g$-twisted modules for automorphisms $g$ of $V$ fixing $u$. We apply this construction to the case that $V$ is an affine vertex operator algebra to obtain explicit results on these automorphisms of categories. In particular, we give explicit constructions of certain generalized twisted modules from generalized twisted modules associated to diagram automorphisms of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras and generalized (untwisted) modules.
We consider two approaches to isotopy invariants of oriented links: one from ribbon categories and the other from generalized Yang-Baxter operators with appropriate enhancements. The generalized Yang-Baxter operators we consider are obtained from so-called gYBE objects following a procedure of Kitaev and Wang. We show that the enhancement of these generalized Yang-Baxter operators is canonically related to the twist structure in ribbon categories from which the operators are produced. If a generalized Yang-Baxter operator is obtained from a ribbon category, it is reasonable to expect that two …
In this note, we compute the split Grothendieck ring of a generalized category of Soergel bimodules of type $A_2$, where we take one generator for each reflection. We give a presentation by generators and relations of it and a parametrization of the indecomposable objects in the category, by realizing them as rings of regular functions on certain unions of graphs of group elements on a reflection faithful representation.
In this paper we answer the question: `what kind of a structure can a general multicategory be enriched in?' The answer is, in a sense to be made precise, that a multicategory of one type can be enriched in a multicategory of the type one level up. In the case of ordinary categories this reduces to something surprising: a category may be enriched in an `fc-multicategory', a very general kind of 2-dimensional structure encompassing monoidal categories, plain multicategories, bicategories and double categories. (It turns out that fc-multicategories also provide a natural setting for the bimodule…
We classify braided generalized near-group fusion categories whose global dimension is not an integer; there are exactly two up to Grothendieck equivalence and taking products with braided pointed fusion categories.
This is the eighth part in a series of papers in which we introduce and develop a natural, general tensor category theory for suitable module categories for a vertex (operator) algebra. In this paper (Part VIII), we construct the braided tensor category structure, using the previously developed results.
The purpose of this paper is to build a new bridge between category theory and a generalized probability theory known as noncommutative probability or quantum probability, which was originated as a mathematical framework for quantum theory, in terms of states as linear functionals defined on category algebras. We clarify that category algebras can be considered as generalized matrix algebras and that states on categories as linear functionals defined on category algebras turn out to be generalized of probability measures on sets as discrete categories. Moreover, by establishing a generalizatio…
We consider generalized Haagerup categories such that $1 \oplus X$ admits a $Q$-system for every non-invertible simple object $X$. We show that in such a category, the group of order two invertible objects has size at most four. We describe the simple objects of the Drinfeld center and give partial formulas for the modular data. We compute the remaining corner of the modular data for several examples and make conjectures about the general case. We also consider several types of equivariantizations and de-equivariantizations of generalized Haagerup categories and describe their Drinfeld centers…
We define a closed model category containing the $n$-nerves defined by Tamsamani, and admitting internal $Hom$. This allows us to construct the $n+1$-category $nCAT$ by taking the internal $Hom$ for fibrant objects. We prove a generalized Seifert-Van Kampen theorem for Tamsamani's Poincaré $n$-groupoid of a topological space. We give a still-speculative discussion of $n$-stacks, and similarly of comparison with other possible definitions of $n$-category.
In our recent paper [Sh1] a version of the "generalized Deligne conjecture" for abelian $n$-fold monoidal categories is proven. For $n=1$ this result says that, given an abelian monoidal $k$-linear category $\mathscr{A}$ with unit $e$, $k$ a field of characteristic 0, the dg vector space $\mathrm{RHom}_{\mathscr{A}}(e,e)$ is the first component of a Leinster 1-monoid in $\mathscr{A}lg(k)$ (provided a rather mild condition on the monoidal and the abelian structures in $\mathscr{A}$, called homotopy compatibility, is fulfilled). In the present paper, we introduce a new concept of a ${\it graded}…
We discuss several useful interpretations of the categorical dimension of objects in a braided fusion category, as well as some conjectures demonstrating the value of quantum dimension as a quantum statistic for detecting certain behaviors of anyons in topological phases of matter. From this discussion we find that objects in braided fusion categories with integral squared dimension have distinctive properties. A large and interesting class of non-integral modular categories such that every simple object has integral squared-dimensions are the metaplectic categories that have the same fusion r…
We introduce generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators for pivotal categories. In a spherical fusion category C, an equivariant indicator of an object in C is defined as a functional on the Grothendieck algebra of the quantum double Z(C) via generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators. The set of all equivariant indicators admits a natural action of the modular group. Using the properties of equivariant indicators, we prove a congruence subgroup theorem for modular categories. As a consequence, all modular representations of a modular category have finite images, and they satisfy a conjecture of Eholz…
We develop a theory of localization for braid group representations associated with objects in braided fusion categories and, more generally, to Yang-Baxter operators in monoidal categories. The essential problem is to determine when a family of braid representations can be uniformly modelled upon a tensor power of a fixed vector space in such a way that the braid group generators act "locally". Although related to the notion of (quasi-)fiber functors for fusion categories, remarkably, such localizations can exist for representations associated with objects of non-integral dimension. We conjec…
In this paper we introduce a notion of {\it generalized operad} containing as special cases various kinds of operad--like objects: ordinary, cyclic, modular, properads etc. We then construct inner cohomomorphism objects in their categories (and categories of algebras over them). We argue that they provide an approach to symmetry and moduli objects in non-commutative geometries based upon these "ring--like" structures. We give a unified axiomatic treatment of generalized operads as functors on categories of abstract labeled graphs. Finally, we extend inner cohomomorphism constructions to more g…
We give formulae for the multiplicities of eigenvalues of generalized rotation operators in terms of generalized Frobenius-Schur indicators in a semisimple spherical tensor category $\mathcal{C}$. In particular, this implies that the entire collection of rotation eigenvalues for a fusion category can be computed from the fusion rules and the traces of rotation at finitely many tensor powers. We also establish a rigidity property for FS indicators of fusion categories with a given fusion ring via Jones's theory of planar algebras. If $\mathcal{C}$ is also braided, these formulae yield the multi…
Set partitions closed under certain operations form a tensor category. They give rise to certain subgroups of the free orthogonal quantum group $O_n^+$, the so called easy quantum groups, introduced by Banica and Speicher in 2009. This correspondence was generalized to two-colored set partitions, which, in addition, assign a black or white color to each point of a set. Globally colorized categories of partitions are those categories that are invariant with respect to arbitrary permutations of colors. This article presents a classification of globally colorized categories. In addition, we show …
