We establish an index theorem for Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional spin manifolds with boundary. It may be thought of as an odd dimensional analogue of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on manifolds with boundary. In particular, there occurs naturally an invariant of $η$ type associated to $K^1$ representatives on even dimensional manifolds, which should be of independent interests. For example, it gives an intrinsic interpretation of the so called Wess-Zumino term in the WZW theory in physics.
In this paper, we establish an equivariant version of Dai-Zhang's Toeplitz index theorem for compact odd-dimensional spin manifolds with even-dimensional boundary.
The goal is to understand the index-theoretic aspects of the recent preprint of R. Nest and F. Radulescu, math.OA/9911042. The basic observation (due to E. Guenter/N. Higson) is that the index of the Toeplitz operator is equal to the index of an associated Callias type operator, i.e. a Dirac operator with potential, the index of which is easy to compute. We show how to extend this idea to the equivariant case.
We study a two dimensional analogue of the Roe-Higson index theorem for a partitioned manifold. We prove that Connes' pairing of some invertible element with Roe's cyclic one-cocycle coincides to the Fredholm index of a Toeplitz operator. In the proof of this paper, we use some properties of a circle and use Higson's argument. In the last section, there is a example of partitioned manifold, which is not a cylinder, with non-trivial pairing.
Using equivariant Toeplitz operator calculus, we give a new proof of the Atiyah-Weinstein conjecture on the index of Fourier integral operators and the relative index of CR structures.
Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold and assume that $M$ is partitioned by a hypersurface $N$. In this paper we introduce a novel class of functions $C_{\mathrm{w}}(M)$ on noncompact manifolds, which is slightly larger than the algebra of Higson functions. Out of $ϕ$ that belongs to $C_{\mathrm{w}}(M)$ we construct an index class $\mathrm{Ind}(ϕ, D)$ in $K_{1}$-group of the Roe algebra of $M$ by using the Kasparov product. It is supposed to be a counterpart of Roe's odd index class. We finally prove that Connes' pairing of $\mathrm{Ind}(ϕ, D)$ and Roe's cyclic $1$-cocycle is equal to the …
We establish several Witten type rigidity and vanishing theorems for twisted Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional manifolds. We obtain our results by combining the modular method, modular transgression and some careful analysis of odd Chern classes for cocycles in odd $K$-theory. Moreover we discover that in odd dimensions, the fundamental group of manifolds plays an important role in the rigidity.
The notion of topological degree is studied for mappings from the boundary of a relatively compact strictly pseudo-convex domain in a Stein manifold into a manifold in terms of index theory of Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space. The index formalism of non-commutative geometry is used to derive analytic integral formulas for the index of a Toeplitz operator with Hölder continuous symbol. The index formula gives an analytic formula for the degree of a Hölder continuous mapping from the boundary of a strictly pseudo-convex domain.
A hyperkähler manifold $M$ has a family of induced complex structures indexed by a two-dimensional sphere $S^2 \cong \mathbb{CP}^1$. The twistor space of $M$ is a complex manifold $Tw(M)$ together with a natural holomorphic projection $Tw(M) \to \mathbb{CP}^1$, whose fiber over each point of $\mathbb{CP}^1$ is a copy of $M$ with the corresponding induced complex structure. We remove one point from this sphere (corresponding to one fiber in the twistor space),and for the case of $M = \mathbb{R}^{4n}$, $n\in\mathbb{N}$, equipped with the standard hyperkähler structure, we construct one quantizat…
A notion of equivariant spectral flows for families of self-dual elliptic operators on Riemannian manifolds is purposed. As a consequence, a local version of a Lefschetz fix point theorem is proved for Toeplitz operators on odd-dimensional spin manifolds.
We show that the (graded) spectral flow of a family of Toeplitz operators on a complete Riemannian manifold is equal to the index of a certain Callias-type operator. When the dimension of the manifold is even this leads to a cohomological formula for the spectral flow. As an application, we compute the spectral flow of a family of Toeplitz operators on a strongly pseudoconvex domain in $C^n$. This result is similar to the Boutet de Monvel's computation of the index of a single Toeplitz operator on a strongly pseudoconvex domain. Finally, we show that the bulk-boundary correspondence in a tight…
In this talk, we review the heat kernel approach to the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on closed manifolds, as well as the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for Dirac operators on manifolds with boundary. We also discuss the odd dimensional counterparts of the above results. In particular, we describe a joint result with Xianzhe Dai on an index theorem for Toeplitz operators on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary.
D.Freed has formulated and proved an index theorem on odd dimensional spin manifolds with boundary. The proof is based on analysis by Calderon and Seeley. In this note we are going to give a proof of this theorem using the heat kernels methods for boundary conditions of Dirichlet and Von Neumann type. Moreover we consider also the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer spectral boundary condition which is not considered in Freed's paper. As a direct consequence of the method, we will obtain some information about isospectral invariants of the boundary conditions. This proof does not uses the cobordism invarianc…
By studying modular invariance properties of some characteristic forms, we get some new anomaly cancellation formulas on $(4r-1)$ dimensional manifolds. As an application, we derive some results on divisibilities of the index of Toeplitz operators on $(4r-1)$ dimensional spin manifolds and some congruent formulas on characteristic number for $(4r-1)$ dimensional spin$^c$ manifolds.
The extended Heisenberg algebra for a contact manifold has a symbolic calculus that accommodates both Heisenberg pseudodifferential operators as well as classical pseudodifferential operators. We derive here a formula for the index of Fredholm operators in this extended calculus. This formula incorporates in a single expression the Atiyah-Singer formula for elliptic operators, as well as Boutet de Monvel's Toeplitz index formula.
We prove an analogue for even dimensional manifolds of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer twisted index theorem for trivialized flat bundles. We show that the eta invariant appearing in this result coincides with the eta invariant by Dai and Zhang up to an integer. We also obtain the odd dimensional counterpart for manifolds with boundary of the relative index pairing by Lesch, Moscovici and Pflaum.
We construct canonical frames and find all maximally symmetric models for a natural generic class of corank 2 distributions on manifolds of odd dimension greater or equal to 7. This class of distributions is characterized by the following two conditions: the pencil of 2-forms associated with the corresponding Pfaffian system has the maximal possible first Kronecker index and the Lie square of the subdistribution generated by the kernels of all these 2-forms is equal to the original distribution. In particular, we show that the unique, up to a local equivalence, maximally symmetric model in thi…
A recent anomaly computation of Horava and Witten is proved and generalized in the form of two index theorems in odd dimensions. Theorem A is a fixed point formula for orientation-reversing involutions. Theorem B is an index theorem for manifolds with boundary using local boundary conditions. Both hold for families of operators.
We generalize the transgression formula for the eta form of Bismut, Cheeger and Berline, Getzler, Vergne for vertical Dirac operators on a fibre bundle with odd dimensional fibres where the Dirac operators have locally at most one eigenvalue of multiplicity one crossing zero transversally.
The goal of this paper is to apply the universal gerbe of \cite{CMi1} and \cite{CMi2} to give an alternative, simple and more unified view of the relationship between index theory and gerbes. We discuss determinant bundle gerbes \cite{CMMi1} and the index gerbe of \cite{L} for the case of families of Dirac operators on odd dimensional closed manifolds. The method also works for a family of Dirac operators on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary, for a pair of Melrose-Piazza's $Cl(1)$-spectral sections for a family of Dirac operators on even dimensional closed manifolds with vanishing index …
We give a new short proof of the index formula of Atiyah and Singer based on combining Getzler's rescaling with Greiner's approach of the heat kernel asymptotics. As application we can easily compute the Connes-Moscovici cyclic cocycle of even and odd Dirac spectral triples, and then recover the Atiyah-Singer index formula (even case) and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer spectral flow formula (odd case).
Let $A(t)$ be an elliptic, product-type suspended (which is to say parameter-dependant in a symbolic way) family of pseudodifferential operators on the fibres of a fibration $ϕ$ with base $Y.$ The standard example is $A+it$ where $A$ is a family, in the usual sense, of first order, self-adjoint and elliptic pseudodifferential operators and $t\in\bbR$ is the `suspending' parameter. Let $π_{\cA}:\cA(ϕ)\longrightarrow Y$ be the infinite-dimensional bundle with fibre at $y\in Y$ consisting of the Schwartz-smoothing perturbations, $q,$ making $A_y(t)+q(t)$ invertible for all $t\in\bbR.$ The total e…
We present a new solution to the index problem for hypoelliptic operators in the Heisenberg calculus on contact manifolds, by constructing the appropriate topological K-theory cocycle for such operators. Its Chern character gives a cohomology class to which the Atiyah-Singer index formula can be applied. Such a K-cocycle has already been constructed by Boutet de Monvel for Toeplitz operators, and, more recently, by Melrose and Epstein for the class of Hermite operators. Our construction applies to general hypoelliptic pseudodifferential operators in the Heisenberg calculus. As in the Hermite I…
We extend the Boutet de Monvel Toeplitz index theorem to complex manifold with isolated singularities following the relative $K$-homology theory of Baum, Douglas, and Taylor for manifold with boundary. We apply this index theorem to study the Arveson-Douglas conjecture. Let $\ball^m$ be the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^m$, and $I$ an ideal in the polynomial algebra $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \cdots, z_m]$. We prove that when the zero variety $Z_I$ is a complete intersection space with only isolated singularities and intersects with the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2m-1}$ transversely, the representations of $\m…
The notion of a local line bundle on a manifold, classified by 2-cohomology with real coefficients, is introduced. The twisting of pseudodifferential operators by such a line bundle leads to an algebroid with elliptic elements with real-valued index, given by a twisted variant of the Atiyah-Singer index formula. Using ideas of Boutet de Monvel and Guillemin the corresponding twisted Toeplitz algebroid on any compact symplectic manifold is shown to yield the star products of Lecomte and DeWilde ([MR84g:17014]) see also Fedosov's construction in [MR92k:58267]. This also shows that the trace on t…
In this paper, we establish an infinitesimal equivariant index formula in the noncommutative geometry framework using Greiner's approach to heat kernel asymptotics. An infinitesimal equivariant index formula for odd dimensional manifolds is also given. We define infinitesimal equivariant eta cochains, prove their regularity and give an explicit formula for them. We also establish an infinitesimal equivariant family index formula and introduce the infinitesimal equivariant eta forms as well as compare them with the equivariant eta forms.
Gauss-Bonnet for simple graphs G assures that the sum of curvatures K(x) over the vertex set V of G is the Euler characteristic X(G). Poincare-Hopf tells that for any injective function f on V the sum of i(f,x) is X(G). We also know that averaging the indices E[i(f,x)] over all functions gives curvature K(x). We explore here the situation when G is geometric of dimension d: that is if each unit sphere S(x) is geometric of dimension d-1 and that X(S(x))=0 for even d and X(S(x))=2 for odd d. The dimension of G is inductively defined as the average of 1+dim(S(x)) over all S(x) assuming the empty …
An elliptic theory is constructed for operators acting in subspaces defined via odd pseudodifferential projections. Subspaces of this type arise as Calderon subspaces for first order elliptic differential operators on manifolds with boundary, or as spectral subspaces for self-adjoint elliptic differential operators of odd order. Index formulas are obtained for operators in odd subspaces on closed manifolds and for general boundary value problems. We prove that the eta-invariant of operators of odd order on even-dimesional manifolds is a dyadic rational number.
For a closed, oriented, odd dimensional manifold $X$, we define the rho invariant $ρ(X,E,H)$ for the twisted odd signature operator valued in a flat hermitian vector bundle $E$, where $H = \sum i^{j+1} H_{2j+1}$ is an odd-degree closed differential form on $X$ and $H_{2j+1}$ is a real-valued differential form of degree ${2j+1}$. We show that the twisted rho invariant $ρ(X,E,H)$ is independent of the choice of metrics on $X$ and $E$ and of the representative $H$ in the cohomology class $[H]$. We establish some basic functorial properties of the twisted rho invariant. We express the twisted eta …
