We show that the effects of finite-precision arithmetic in forming and solving the linear system that arises at each iteration of primal-dual interior-point algorithms for nonlinear programming are benign, provided that the iterates satisfy centrality and feasibility conditions of the type usually associated with path-following methods. When we replace the standard assumption that the active constraint gradients are independent by the weaker Mangasarian-Fromovitz constraint qualification, rapid convergence usually is attainable, even when cancellation and roundoff errors occur during the calculations. In deriving our main results, we prove a key technical result about the size of the exact primal-dual step. This result can be used to modify existing analysis of primal-dual interior-point methods for convex programming, making it possible to extend the superlinear local convergence results to the nonconvex case.
A new relaxed variant of interior point method for low-rank semidefinite programming problems is proposed in this paper. The method is a step outside of the usual interior point framework. In anticipation to converging to a low-rank primal solution, a special nearly low-rank form of all primal iterates is imposed. To accommodate such a (restrictive) structure, the first order optimality conditions have to be relaxed and are therefore approximated by solving an auxiliary least-squares problem. The relaxed interior point framework opens numerous possibilities how primal and dual approximated New…
In this paper, we address the efficient numerical solution of linear and quadratic programming problems, often of large scale. With this aim, we devise an infeasible interior point method, blended with the proximal method of multipliers, which in turn results in a primal-dual regularized interior point method. Application of this method gives rise to a sequence of increasingly ill-conditioned linear systems which cannot always be solved by factorization methods, due to memory and CPU time restrictions. We propose a novel preconditioning strategy which is based on a suitable sparsification of t…
Mehrotra's algorithm has been the most successful infeasible interior-point algorithm for linear programming since 1990. Most popular interior-point software packages for linear programming are based on Mehrotra's algorithm. This paper proposes an alternative algorithm, arc-search infeasible interior-point algorithm. We will demonstrate, by testing Netlib problems and comparing the test results obtained by arc-search infeasible interior-point algorithm and Mehrotra's algorithm, that the proposed arc-search infeasible interior-point algorithm is a more efficient algorithm than Mehrotra's algori…
Kuhn-Tucker conditions for mathematical programming problems in Banach spaces partially ordered by cone with empty interior are obtained under strong simultaneity condition. If partial ordered cone has interior point, it is proved that Slater and strong simultaneity conditions are equivalent.
In this paper, we study the convergence of an interior subgradient and proximal methods for a DC (difference of convex functions) constrained minimization problem.
In this paper, we propose an arc-search infeasible-interior-point algorithm. We show that this algorithm is polynomial and the polynomial bound is ${\cal O}(nL)$ which is at least as good as the best existing bound for infeasible-interior-point algorithms for linear programming.
In this work, in the context of Linear and Quadratic Programming, we interpret Primal Dual Regularized Interior Point Methods (PDR-IPMs) in the framework of the Proximal Point Method. The resulting Proximal Stabilized IPM (PS-IPM) is strongly supported by theoretical results concerning convergence and the rate of convergence, and can handle degenerate problems. Moreover, in the second part of this work, we analyse the interactions between the regularization parameters and the computational foot-print of the linear algebra routines used to solve the Newton linear systems. In particular, when th…
We present a short step interior point method for solving a class of nonlinear programming problems with quadratic objective function. Convex quadratic programming problems can be reformulated as problems in this class. The method is shown to have weak polynomial time complexity. A complete proof of the numerical stability of the method is provided. No requirements on feasibility, row-rank of the constraint Jacobian, strict complementarity, or conditioning of the problem are made. Infeasible problems are solved to an optimal interior least-squares solution.
Applying an interior-point method to the central-path conditions is a widely used approach for solving quadratic programs. Reformulating these conditions in the log-domain is a natural variation on this approach that to our knowledge is previously unstudied. In this paper, we analyze log-domain interior-point methods and prove their polynomial-time convergence. We also prove that they are approximated by classical barrier methods in a precise sense and provide simple computational experiments illustrating their superior performance.
Linear programming is now included in algorithm undergraduate and postgraduate courses for computer science majors. We give a self-contained treatment of an interior-point method which is particularly tailored to the typical mathematical background of CS students. In particular, only limited knowledge of linear algebra and calculus is assumed.
Since more than three decades, interior-point methods proved very useful for optimization, from linear over semidefinite to conic (and partly beyond non-convex) programming; despite the fact that already in the semidefinite case (even when strong duality holds) "hard" problems are known. We shade a light on a rather surprising restriction in the non-commutative world (of semidefinite programming), namely "commutative" paths and propose a new family of solvers that is able to use the full richness of "non-commutative" search directions: (primal) feasible-interior-point methods. Beside a detaile…
In this paper we will discuss two variants of an inexact feasible interior point algorithm for convex quadratic programming. We will consider two different neighbourhoods: a (small) one induced by the use of the Euclidean norm which yields a short-step algorithm and a symmetric one induced by the use of the infinity norm which yields a (practical) long-step algorithm. Both algorithms allow for the Newton equation system to be solved inexactly. For both algorithms we will provide conditions for the level of error acceptable in the Newton equation and establish the worst-case complexity results.

Although the classical LQR design method has been very successful in real world engineering designs, in some cases, the classical design method needs modifications because of the saturation in actuators. This modified problem is sometimes called the constrained LQR design. For discrete systems, the constrained LQR design problem is equivalent to a convex quadratic programming problem with box constraints. We will show that the interior-point method is very efficient for this problem because an initial interior point is available, a condition which is not true for general convex quadratic progr…
Interior-point methods for linear programming problems require the repeated solution of a linear system of equations. Solving these linear systems is non-trivial due to the severe ill-conditioning of the matrices towards convergence. This issue can be alleviated by incorporating suitable regularization terms in the linear programming problem. Regularization also allows us to efficiently handle rank deficient constraint matrices. We provide a convergence analysis of a regularized inexact interior-point method. The term `inexact' refers to the fact that we do not need to compute the true solutio…
In this paper we generalize the Interior Point-Proximal Method of Multipliers (IP-PMM) presented in [An Interior Point-Proximal Method of Multipliers for Convex Quadratic Programming, Computational Optimization and Applications, 78, 307--351 (2021)] for the solution of linear positive Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) problems, allowing inexactness in the solution of the associated Newton systems. In particular, we combine an infeasible Interior Point Method (IPM) with the Proximal Method of Multipliers (PMM) and interpret the algorithm (IP-PMM) as a primal-dual regularized IPM, suitable for sol…
It is known that one can solve semidefinite programs to within fixed accuracy in polynomial time using the ellipsoid method (under some assumptions). In this paper it is shown that the same holds true when one uses the short-step, primal interior point method. The main idea of the proof is to employ Diophantine approximation at each iteration to bound the intermediate bit-sizes of iterates.

In this paper we present general-purpose preconditioners for regularized augmented systems arising from optimization problems, and their corresponding normal equations. We discuss positive definite preconditioners, suitable for CG and MINRES. We consider "sparsifications" which avoid situations in which eigenvalues of the preconditioned matrix may become complex. Special attention is given to systems arising from the application of regularized interior point methods to linear or nonlinear convex programming problems.
In this paper, we extend the idea of using controlled perturbations to enhance the capabilities of active-set prediction for interior point methods for convex Quadratic Programming (QP) problems. Namely, we consider perturbing the inequality constraints (by a small amount) so as to enlarge the feasible set. We show that if the perturbations are chosen judiciously, then there exists a primal-dual pair of points which is close to the optimal solution of the perturbed problems and the corresponding active and inactive sets at this point are the same as the optimal active and inactive sets at an o…
This paper studies the worst case iteration complexity of an infeasible interior point method (IPM) for seconder order cone programming (SOCP), which is more convenient for warmstarting compared with feasible IPMs. The method studied bases on the homogeneous and self-dual model and the Monteiro-Zhang family of searching directions. Its worst case iteration complexity is $O\left(k^{1/2}\log\left(ε^{-1}\right)\right)$, to reduce the primal residual, dual residual, and complementarity gap by a factor of $ε$, where $k$ is the number of cone constraints. The result is the same as the best known res…
In this paper, we consider a nonlinear semi-infinite program that minimizes a function including a log-determinant (logdet) function over positive definite matrix constraints and infinitely many convex inequality constraints, called SIPLOG for short. The main purpose of the paper is to develop an algorithm for computing a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) point for the SIPLOG efficiently. More specifically, we propose an interior point sequential quadratic programming-type method that inexactly solves a sequence of semi-infinite quadratic programs approximating the SIPLOG. Furthermore, to generate a se…
Several algorithms are available in the literature for finding the entire set of Pareto-optimal solutions in MultiObjective Linear Programming (MOLP). However, it has not been proposed so far an interior point algorithm that finds all Pareto-optimal solutions of MOLP. We present an explicit construction, based on a transformation of any MOLP into a finite sequence of SemiDefinite Programs (SDP), the solutions of which give the entire set of Pareto-optimal extreme points solutions of MOLP. These SDP problems are solved by interior point methods; thus our approach provides a pseudo-polynomial in…
Quasi-Newton methods are well known techniques for large-scale numerical optimization. They use an approximation of the Hessian in optimization problems or the Jacobian in system of nonlinear equations. In the Interior Point context, quasi-Newton algorithms compute low-rank updates of the matrix associated with the Newton systems, instead of computing it from scratch at every iteration. In this work, we show that a simplified quasi-Newton primal-dual interior point algorithm for linear programming enjoys polynomial worst-case iteration complexity. Feasible and infeasible cases of the algorithm…
For interior-point algorithms in linear programming, it is well-known that the selection of the centering parameter is crucial for proving polynomility in theory and for efficiency in practice. However, the selection of the centering parameter is usually by heuristics and separate from the selection of the line-search step size. The heuristics are quite different while developing practically efficient algorithms, such as MPC, and theoretically efficient algorithms, such as short-step path-following algorithm. This introduces a dilemma that some algorithms with the best-known polynomial bound a…
This paper introduces a novel Differential Dynamic Programming (DDP) algorithm for solving discrete-time finite-horizon optimal control problems with inequality constraints. Two variants, namely Feasible- and Infeasible-IPDDP algorithms, are developed using primal-dual interior-point methodology, and their local quadratic convergence properties are characterised. We show that the stationary points of the algorithms are the perturbed KKT points, and thus can be moved arbitrarily close to a locally optimal solution. Being free from the burden of the active-set methods, it can handle nonlinear st…
Since the beginning of the development of interior-point methods, there exists a puzzling gap between the results in theory and the observations in numerical experience, i.e., algorithms with good polynomial bound are not computationally efficient and algorithms demonstrated efficiency in computation do not have a good or any polynomial bound. Todd raised a question in 2002: "Can we find a theoretically and practically efficient way to reoptimize?" This paper is an effort to close the gap. We propose two arc-search infeasible interior-point algorithms with infeasible central path neighborhood …

We provide a condition-based analysis of two interior-point methods for unconstrained geometric programs, a class of convex programs that arise naturally in applications including matrix scaling, matrix balancing, and entropy maximization. Our condition numbers are natural geometric quantities associated with the Newton polytope of the geometric program, and lead to diameter bounds on approximate minimizers. We also provide effective bounds on the condition numbers both in general and under combinatorial assumptions on the Newton polytope. In this way, we generalize the iteration complexity of…
In this paper, we present a dynamic non-diagonal regularization for interior point methods. The non-diagonal aspect of this regularization is implicit, since all the off-diagonal elements of the regularization matrices are cancelled out by those elements present in the Newton system, which do not contribute important information in the computation of the Newton direction. Such a regularization has multiple goals. The obvious one is to improve the spectral properties of the Newton system solved at each iteration of the interior point method. On the other hand, the regularization matrices introd…
This paper introduces the algorithmic design and implementation of Tulip, an open-source interior-point solver for linear optimization. It implements a regularized homogeneous interior-point algorithm with multiple centrality corrections, and therefore handles unbounded and infeasible problems. The solver is written in Julia, thus allowing for a flexible and efficient implementation: Tulip's algorithmic framework is fully disentangled from linear algebra implementations and from a model's arithmetic. In particular, this allows to seamlessly integrate specialized routines for structured problem…
We propose and analyse primal-dual interior-point algorithms for convex optimization problems in conic form. The families of algorithms we analyse are so-called short-step algorithms and they match the current best iteration complexity bounds for primal-dual symmetric interior-point algorithm of Nesterov and Todd, for symmetric cone programming problems with given self-scaled barriers. Our results apply to any self-concordant barrier for any convex cone. We also prove that certain specializations of our algorithms to hyperbolic cone programming problems (which lie strictly between symmetric co…
The problem of minimizing an entropy functional subject to linear constraints is a useful example of partially finite convex programming. In the 1990s, Borwein and Lewis provided broad and easy-to-verify conditions that guarantee strong duality for such problems. Their approach is to construct a function in the quasi-relative interior of the relevant infinite-dimensional set, which assures the existence of a point in the core of the relevant finite-dimensional set. We revisit this problem, and provide an alternative proof by directly appealing to the definition of the core, rather than by rely…
Semidefinite programs (SDPs) are a fundamental class of optimization problems with important recent applications in approximation algorithms, quantum complexity, robust learning, algorithmic rounding, and adversarial deep learning. This paper presents a faster interior point method to solve generic SDPs with variable size $n \times n$ and $m$ constraints in time \begin{align*} \widetilde{O}(\sqrt{n}( mn^2 + m^ω+ n^ω) \log(1 / ε) ), \end{align*} where $ω$ is the exponent of matrix multiplication and $ε$ is the relative accuracy. In the predominant case of $m \geq n$, our runtime outperforms tha…
A class of interior point methods using inexact directions is analysed. The linear system arising in interior point methods for linear programming is reformulated such that the solution is less sensitive to perturbations in the right-hand side. For the new system an implementable condition is formulated that controls the relative error in the solution. Based on this condition, a feasible and an infeasible potential reduction method are described which retain the convergence and complexity bounds known for exact directions.
In this paper we combine an infeasible Interior Point Method (IPM) with the Proximal Method of Multipliers (PMM). The resulting algorithm (IP-PMM) is interpreted as a primal-dual regularized IPM, suitable for solving linearly constrained convex quadratic programming problems. We apply few iterations of the interior point method to each sub-problem of the proximal method of multipliers. Once a satisfactory solution of the PMM sub-problem is found, we update the PMM parameters, form a new IPM neighbourhood and repeat this process. Given this framework, we prove polynomial complexity of the algor…
Since the elimination algorithm of Fourier and Motzkin, many different methods have been developed for solving linear programs. When analyzing the time complexity of LP algorithms, it is typically either assumed that calculations are performed exactly and bounds are derived on the number of elementary arithmetic operations necessary, or the cost of all arithmetic operations is considered through a bit-complexity analysis. Yet in practice, implementations typically use limited-precision arithmetic. In this paper we introduce the idea of a limited-precision LP oracle and study how such an oracle…

We propose an interior point method (IPM) for solving semidefinite programming problems (SDPs). The standard interior point algorithms used to solve SDPs work in the space of positive semidefinite matrices. Contrary to that the proposed algorithm works in the cone of matrices of constant \emph{factor width}. This adaptation makes the proposed method more suitable for parallelization than the standard IPM. We prove global convergence and provide a complexity analysis. Our work is inspired by a series of papers by Ahmadi, Dash, Majumdar and Hall, and builds upon a recent preprint by Roig-Solvas …
The work of Wachter and Biegler suggests that infeasible-start interior point methods (IPMs) developed for linear programming cannot be adapted to nonlinear optimization without significant modification, i.e., using a two-phase or penalty method. We propose an IPM that, by careful initialization and updates of the slack variables, is guaranteed to find a first-order certificate of local infeasibility, local optimality or unboundedness of the (shifted) feasible region. Our proposed algorithm differs from other IPM methods for nonconvex programming because we reduce primal feasibility at the sam…
Polyhedral projection is a main operation of the polyhedron abstract domain. It can be computed via parametric linear programming (PLP), which is more efficient than the classic Fourier-Motzkin elimination method. In prior work, PLP was done in arbitrary precision rational arithmetic. In this paper, we present an approach where most of the computation is performed in floating-point arithmetic, then exact rational results are reconstructed. We also propose a workaround for a difficulty that plagued previous attempts at using PLP for computations on polyhedra: in general the linear programming probl…
