In this paper, we study an L2 version of the semiclassical approximation of magnetic Schroedinger operators with invariant Morse type potentials on covering spaces of compact manifolds. In particular, we are able to establish the existence of an arbitrary large number of gaps in the spectrum of these operators, in the semiclassical limit as the coupling constant goes to zero.
In this article we study limits of Wigner distributions (the so-called semiclassical measures) corresponding to sequences of solutions to the semiclassical Schroedinger equation at times scales $α_{h}$ tending to infinity as the semiclassical parameter $h$ tends to zero (when $α_{h}=1/h$ this is equivalent to consider solutions to the non-semiclassical Schreodinger equation). Some general results are presented, among which a weak version of Egorov's theorem that holds in this setting. A complete characterization is given for the Euclidean space and Zoll manifolds (that is, manifolds with perio…
We define a Schrödinger operator on the half-space with a discontinuous magnetic field having a piecewise-constant strength and a uniform direction. Motivated by applications in the theory of superconductivity, we study the infimum of the spectrum of the operator. We give sufficient conditions on the strength and the direction of the magnetic field such that the aforementioned infimum is an eigenvalue of a reduced model operator on the half-plane. We use the Schrödinger operator on the half-space to study a new semiclassical problem in bounded domains of the space, considering a magnetic Neuma…
We prove trace inequalities for a self-adjoint operator on an abstract Hilbert space. These inequalities lead to universal bounds on spectral gaps and on moments of eigenvalues lambda_k that are analogous to those known for Schroedinger operators and the Dirichlet Laplacian, on which the operators of interest are modeled. In addition we produce inequalities that are new even in the model case. These include a family of differential inequalities for generalized Riesz means and theorems stating that arithmetic means of lambda_k^p for p <= 3 are universally bounded from above by multiples of the …
We show that, under some very weak assumption of effective variation for the magnetic field, a periodic Schrödinger operator with magnetic wells on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, \R)=0$ equipped with a properly disconnected, cocompact action of a finitely generated, discrete group of isometries has an arbitrarily large number of spectral gaps in the semi-classical limit.
We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian in a straight planar strip perturbed by a bounded periodic symmetric operator. We prove the classical Bethe-Sommerfeld conjecture for this operator, namely, that this operator has finitely many gaps in its spectrum provided a certain special function written as a series satisfies some lower bound. We show that this is indeed the case if the ratio of the period and the width of strip is less than a certain explicit number, which is approximately equal to 0.10121. We also find explicitly the point in the spectrum, above which there is no internal gaps. We then…
I derive sharp semiclassical asymptotics of \int |e_h(x,y,0)|^2ω(x,y)dxdy where e_h(x,y,τ) is the Schwartz kernel of the spectral projector of Magnetic Schroedinger operator and ω(x,y) is singular as x=y. I also consider asymptotics of more general expressions.
The goal of this paper is to derive estimates of eigenvalue moments for Dirichlet Laplacians and Schrödinger operators in regions having infinite cusps which are geometrically nontrivial being either curved or twisted; we are going to show how those geometric properties enter the eigenvalue bounds. The obtained inequalities reflect the essentially one-dimensional character of the cusps and we give an example showing that in an intermediate energy region they can be much stronger than the usual semiclassical bounds.
This article deals with the spectral analysis of the semiclassical Neumann magnetic Laplacian on a smooth bounded domain in dimension three. When the magnetic field is constant and in the semiclassical limit, we establish a four-term asymptotic expansion of the low-lying eigenvalues, involving a geometric quantity along the apparent contour of the domain in the direction of the field. In particular, we prove that they are simple.
We consider magnetic Schroedinger operators on quantum graphs with identical edges. The spectral problem for the quantum graph is reduced to the discrete magnetic Laplacian on the underlying combinatorial graph and a certain Hill operator. In particular, it is shown that the spectrum on the quantum graph is the preimage of the combinatorial spectrum under a certain entire function. Using this correspondence we show that that the number of gaps in the spectrum of the Schroedinger operators admits an estimate from below in terms of the Hill operator independently of the graph structure.
We introduce the periodic Airy-Schrödinger operator and we study its band spectrum. This is an example of an explicitly solvable model with a periodic potential which is not differentiable at its minima and maxima. We define a semiclassical regime in which the results are stated for a fixed value of the semiclassical parameter and are thus estimates instead of asymptotic results. We prove that there exists a sequence of explicit constants, which are zeroes of classical functions, giving upper bounds of the semiclassical parameter for which the spectral bands are in the semiclassical regime. We…
We numerically compute eigenvalues of the non-self-adjoint Zakharov--Shabat problem in the semiclassical regime. In particular, we compute the eigenvalues for a Gaussian potential and compare the results to the corresponding (formal) WKB approximations used in the approach to the semiclassical or zero-dispersion limit of the focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equation via semiclassical soliton ensembles. This numerical experiment, taken together with recent numerical experiments [17,18], speaks directly to the viability of this approach; in particular, our experiment suggests a value for the rate…
We describe some semiclassical spectral properties of Harper-like operators, i.e. of one-dimensional quantum Hamiltonians periodic in both momentum and position. The spectral region corresponding to the separatrices of the classical Hamiltonian is studied for the case of integer flux. We derive asymptotic formula for the dispersion relations, the width of bands and gaps, and show how geometric characteristics and the absence of symmetries of the Hamiltonian influence the form of the energy bands.
We consider Schrödinger operators $H^h = (ih d+{\bf A})^* (ih d+{\bf A})$ with the periodic magnetic field ${\bf B}=d{\bf A}$ on covering spaces of compact manifolds. Under some assumptions on $\bf B$, we prove that there are arbitrarily large number of gaps in the spectrum of these operators in the semiclassical limit of strong magnetic field $h\to 0$.
A periodic Schrödinger operator on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, \mathbb R)=0$ endowed with a properly discontinuous cocompact isometric action of a discrete group is considered. Under some additional conditions on the magnetic field existence of an arbitrary large number of gaps in the spectrum of such an operator in the semiclassical limit is established. The proofs are based on the study of the tunneling effect in the corresponding quantum system.
We consider a semiclassical asymptotics of local trace for the 3D-Schroedinger operator with self-generated magnetic field; it is given by Weyl expression with O(h^{-1}) error and under standard condition to Hamiltonian trajectories even o(h^{-1}). In comparison to v1,2 errors are corrected, new results are added and more details are provided. Misprint correction in comparison to v3
We consider a periodic magnetic Schrödinger operator on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, \RR)=0$ endowed with a properly discontinuous cocompact isometric action of a discrete group. We assume that there is no electric field and that the magnetic field has a periodic set of compact magnetic wells. We review a general scheme of a proof of existence of an arbitrary large number of gaps in the spectrum of such an operator in the semiclassical limit, which was suggested in our previous paper, and some applications of this scheme. Then we apply these methods to establish simil…
We give a survey of some results, mainly obtained by the authors and their collaborators, on spectral properties of the magnetic Schrödinger operators in the semiclassical limit. We focus our discussion on asymptotic behavior of the individual eigenvalues for operators on closed manifolds and existence of gaps in intervals close to the bottom of the spectrum of periodic operators.
We consider Schroedinger operator $-Δ+V$ in $R^d$ ($d\ge 2$) with smooth periodic potential $V$ and prove that there are only finitely many gaps in its spectrum.
In this paper, we study a refined L2 version of the semiclassical approximation of projectively invariant elliptic operators with invariant Morse type potentials on covering spaces of compact manifolds. We work on the level of spectral projections (and not just their traces) and obtain an information about classes of these projections in K-theory in the semiclassical limit as the coupling constant goes to zero. An important corollary is a vanishing theorem for the higher traces in cyclic cohomology for the spectral projections. This result is then applied to the quantum Hall effect. We also gi…
We consider the semiclassical Schroedinger operator with a "well in an island" potential, on which we assume smoothness only, except near infinity. We give the asymptotic expansion of the imaginary part of the shape resonance at the bottom of the well. This is a generalization of a result by Helffer and Sjoestrand in the globally analytic case. We use an almost analytic extension in order to continue the WKB solution coming from the well beyond the caustic set, and, for the justification of the accuracy of this approximation, we develop some refined microlocal arguments in h-dependent small re…
We study the Bochner-Schrödinger operator $H_{p}=\frac 1pΔ^{L^p\otimes E}+V$ on high tensor powers of a positive line bundle $L$ on a symplectic manifold of bounded geometry. First, we give a rough asymptotic description of its spectrum in terms of the spectra of the model operators. This allows us to prove the existence of gaps in the spectrum under some conditions on the curvature of the line bundle. Then we consider the spectral projection of such an operator corresponding to an interval whose extreme points are not in the spectrum and study asymptotic behavior of its kernel. First, we esta…
We consider pointwise semiclassical spectral asymptotics i.e. asymptotics of $e(x,x,0)$ as $h\to +0$ where $e(x,y,τ)$ is the Schwartz kernel of the spectral projector and consider two cases when schort loops give contribution above $O(h^{1-d})$: (i) Schroedinger operator in dimensions $1,2$ as potential $V=0\implies \nabla V\ne 0$; (ii) Operators near boundaries.
We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator $H^h$, depending on the semiclassical parameter $h>0$, on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We assume that there is no electric field. We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the magnetic field $b$ is strictly positive, and there exists a unique minimum point of $b$, which is non-degenerate. The main result of the paper is a complete asymptotic expansion for the low-lying eigenvalues of the operator $H^h$ in the semiclassical limit. We also apply these results to prove the existence of an arbitrary large number of spectral gaps in the semicla…
We consider the discrete spectrum of the two-dimensional Hamiltonian $H=H_0+V$, where $H_0$ is a Schrödinger operator with a non-constant magnetic field $B$ that depends only on one of the spatial variables, and $V$ is an electric potential that decays at infinity. We study the accumulation rate of the eigenvalues of H in the gaps of its essential spectrum. First, under some general conditions on $B$ and $V$, we introduce effective Hamiltonians that govern the main asymptotic term of the eigenvalue counting function. Further, we use the effective Hamiltonians to find the asymptotic behavior of…
We consider a semiclassical asymptotics of local trace for the 3D-Schroedinger operator with self-generated magnetic field in the case when electric potential has one or several Coulomb-like singularities; it is given by Weyl expression plus (magnetic) Scott correction term with O(h^{-4/3}) error provided distance between singularities is large enough. Significant improvement and simplification in comparison to v1.
We continue our study of a magnetic Schrödinger operator on a two-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold in the case when the minimal value of the module of the magnetic field is strictly positive. We analyze the case when the magnetic field has degenerate magnetic wells. The main result of the paper is an asymptotics of the groundstate energy of the operator in the semiclassical limit. The upper bounds are improved in the case when we have a localization by a miniwell effect of lowest order. These results are applied to prove the existence of an arbitrary large number of spectral gaps in the…
We compute an explicit formula for the integrated density of states of the periodic Airy-Schr{ö}dinger operator on the real line. For this purpose, we study precisely the spectrum of the restriction of the periodic Airy-Schr{ö}dinger operator to a finite number of periods. We prove that all the eigenvalues of this restriction are in the spectral bands of the periodic Airy-Schr{ö}dinger operator and none of them are in its spectral gaps. We count exactly the number of eigenvalues in each of the spectral bands, this number being equal to the number of periods to which the periodic operator is re…
We consider semiclassical Schroedinger operators on R^n, with C^\infty potentials decaying polynomially at infinity. The usual theories of resonances do not apply in such a non-analytic framework. Here, under some additional conditions, we show that resonances are invariantly defined up to any power of their imaginary part. The theory is based on resolvent estimates for families of approximating distorted operators with potentials that are holomorphic in narrow complex sectors around R^n.
We consider a periodic magnetic Schrödinger operator $H^h$, depending on the semiclassical parameter $h>0$, on a noncompact Riemannian manifold $M$ such that $H^1(M, {\mathbb R})=0$ endowed with a properly discontinuous cocompact isometric action of a discrete group. We assume that there is no electric field and that the magnetic field has a periodic set of compact magnetic wells. We suppose that the magnetic field vanishes regularly on a hypersurface $S$. First, we prove upper and lower estimates for the bottom $λ_0(H^h)$ of the spectrum of the operator $H^h$in $L^2(M)$. Then, assuming the ex…
We consider a magnetic Schrödinger operator $H^h=(-ih\nabla-\vec{A})^2$ with the Dirichlet boundary conditions in an open set $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^3$, where $h>0$ is a small parameter. We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the module $|\vec{B}|$ of the vector magnetic field $\vec{B}$ is strictly positive, and there exists a unique minimum point of $|\vec{B}|$, which is non-degenerate. The main result of the paper is upper estimates for the low-lying eigenvalues of the operator $H^h$ in the semiclassical limit. We also prove the existence of an arbitrary large number of spectral gaps in t…
A perturbation decaying to 0 at infinity and not too irregular at 0 introduces at most a discrete set of eigenvalues into the spectral gaps of a one-dimensional Dirac operator on the half-line. We show that the number of these eigenvalues in a compact subset of a gap in the essential spectrum is given by a quasi-semiclassical asymptotic formula in the slow-decay limit, which for power-decaying perturbations is equivalent to the large-coupling limit. This asymptotic behaviour elucidates the origin of the dense point spectrum observed in spherically symmetric, radially periodic three-dimensional…
This article is devoted to the spectral analysis of the electro-magnetic Schrödinger operator on the Euclidean plane. In the semiclassical limit, we derive a pseudo-differential effective operator that allows us to describe the spectrum in various situations and appropriate regions of the complex plane. Not only results of the selfadjoint case are proved (or recovered) in the proposed unifying framework, but new results are established when the electric potential is complex-valued. In such situations, when the non-selfadjointness comes with its specific issues (lack of a "spectral theorem", re…
