The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the formal deficiency indices ${\cal N}_{\pm}(I)$ of a symmetric first order system $$ Jf'+Bf=λ{\cal H} f $$ on an interval $I$, where $I=\mathbb{R}$ or $I=\mathbb{R}_\pm.$ Here $J,B,{cal H}$ are $n\times n$ matrix valued functions and the Hamiltonian ${\cal H}\ge 0$ may be singular even everywhere. We obtain two results for such a system to have minimal numbers ${\cal N}_\pm(\mathbb{R})=0$ (resp. ${\cal N}_\pm(\mathbb{R}_\pm)=n$) and a criterion for their maximality ${\cal N}_{\pm}(\mathbb{R}_+)=2n.$ Some conditions for a canonical system to have intermediate numbers ${\cal N}_\pm(\mathbb{R}_+)$ are presented, too. We also obtain a generalization of the well-known Titchmarsh-Sears theorem for second order Sturm-Liouville type equations. This contains results due to Lidskii and Krein as special cases.
It is important to note that in general the above system does not give rise to an operator but rather to a symmetric linear relation in a Hilbert space. These relations are investigated in detail.
As a byproduct we obtain very short proofs of (generalizations of) the main results of a paper by Kogan and Rofe-Beketov (Proc. Roy. Soc. Edinb. 74 (1974/75))as well as a criterion for the quasi-regularity of canonical systems. This covers the Kac-Krein theorem and some results from the quoted paper of Kogan and Rofe-Beketov.
We study self-adjoint extensions of operators which are the product of the multiplication operator by an analytic function and the analytic continuation in a strip. We compute the deficiency indices of the product operator for a wide class of analytic functions. For functions of a particular form, we point out the existence of a self-adjoint extension which is unitarily equivalent to the analytic-continuation operation. They appear in integrable quantum field theories as the one-particle component of the operators which realize the bound states of elementary particles and the existence of self…
We give a sufficient condition for the essential self-adjointness of a perturbation of the square of the magnetic Laplacian on an infinite weighted graph. The main result is applicable to graphs whose degree function is not necessarily bounded. The result allows perturbations that are not necessarily bounded from below by a constant.
We consider Schrödinger operators on possibly noncompact Riemannian manifolds, acting on sections in vector bundles, with locally square integrable potentials whose negative part is in the underlying Kato class. Using path integral methods, we prove that under geodesic completeness these differential operators are essentially self-adjoint on the space of smooth functions with compact support, and that the corresponding operator closures are semibounded from below. These results apply to nonrelativistic Pauli-Dirac operators that describe the energy of Hydrogen type atoms on Riemannian 3-manifo…
We characterize the set of rectangular Weyl matrix functions corresponding to Dirac systems with locally square-integrable potentials on a semi-axis and demonstrate a new way to recover the locally square-integrable potential from the Weyl function. Important interconnections between our approach and accelerants of convolution operators are discussed as well.
Finite dimensional subspaces spanned by exponential functions in the space of square integrable functions on a finite interval of the real line are considered. Their limiting positions are studied and described in terms of expo-polynomials.
The aim of this paper is to study some properties of left translates of a square integrable function on the Heisenberg group. First, a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the canonical dual to a function $φ\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2n})$ is obtained in the case of twisted shift-invariant spaces. Further, characterizations of $\ell^{2}$-linear independence and the Hilbertian property of the twisted translates of a function $φ\in L^{2}(\mathbb{R}^{2n})$ are obtained. Later these results are shown in the case of the Heisenberg group.
In this note, we find sufficient conditions for an operator with kernel of the form $A(x)B(y)-A(x)B(y)/(x-y)$ (which we call a Tracy-Widom type operator) to be the square of a Hankel operator. We consider two contexts: infinite matrices on $\ell^2$, and integral operators on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{T})$. The results can be applied to the discrete Bessel kernel, which is significant in random matrix theory.
In a recent paper we found conditions for a nilpotent Lie group $N$ to have a filtration by normal subgroups whose successive quotients have square integrable representations, and such that these square integrable representations fit together nicely to give an explicit construction of Plancherel almost all representations of $N$. That resulted in explicit character formulae, Plancherel formulae and multiplicity formulae. We also showed that nilradicals $N$ of minimal parabolic subgroups $P = MAN$ enjoy that "stepwise square integrable" property. Here we extend those results to direct limits of…
We prove that the HRT (Heil, Ramanathan, and Topiwala) conjecture holds for finite Gabor systems generated by square-integrable functions with certain behavior at infinity. These functions include functions ultimately decaying faster than any exponential function, as well as square-integrable functions ultimately analytic and whose germs are in a Hardy field. Two classes of the latter type of functions are the set of square-integrable logarithmico-exponential functions and the set of square-integrable Pfaffian functions. We also prove the HRT conjecture for certain finite Gabor systems generat…
Let $G$ be a locally compact group. We examine the problem of determining when nonzero functions in $L^2(G)$ have linearly independent translations. In particular, we establish some results for the case when $G$ has an irreducible, square integrable, unitary representation. We apply these results to the special cases of the affine group, the shearlet group and the Weyl-Heisenberg group. We also investigate the case when $G$ has an abelian, closed subgroup of finite index.
In this paper, we study matrix valued positive definite functions on a unimodular group. We generalize two important results of Godement on square integrable positive definite functions to matrix valued square integrable positive definite functions. We show that a matrix-valued continuous $L^2$ positive definite function can always be written as a convolution of a $L^2$ positive definite function with itself. We also prove that, given two $L^2$ matrix valued positive definite functions $Φ$ and $Ψ$, $\int_G Trace(Φ(g) \bar{Ψ(g)}^t) d g \geq 0$. In addition this integral equals zero if and only …
Let $ϕ$ be a real-valued smooth function on $\mathbf{C}$ satisfying $0 \le Δϕ\le M$ for some $M \ge 0$. We consider the space of all holomorphic functions which are square-integrable with respect to the measure $e^{-ϕ(z)} dz$. In this paper, a pointwise bound for any function in this space is established. We show that there exists a constant $K$ depending only on $M$ such that $|f(z)|^2 \le Ke^{ϕ(z)}\|f\|^2$ for any $f$ in this space and for any complex number $z$.
We develop an abstract framework for the investigation of quantization and dequantization procedures based on orthogonality relations that do not necessarily involve group representations. To illustrate the usefulness of our abstract method we show that it behaves well with respect to the infinite tensor products. This construction subsumes examples coming from the study of magnetic Weyl calculus, the magnetic pseudo-differential Weyl calculus, the metaplectic representation on locally compact abelian groups, irreducible representations associated with finite-dimensional coadjoint orbits of so…
We consider an arbitrary square integrable function $F$ on the phase space and look for the Wigner function closest to it with respect to the $L^2$ norm. It is well known that the minimizing solution is the Wigner function of any eigenvector associated with the largest eigenvalue of the Hilbert-Schmidt operator with Weyl symbol $F$. We solve the particular case of radial functions on the two-dimensional phase space exactly. For more general cases, one has to solve an infinite dimensional eigenvalue problem. To avoid this difficulty, we consider a finite dimensional approximation and estimate t…
Let D be a bounded pseudoconvex domain in $C^n, n\geq 2, 0\leq p\leq n,$ and $1\leq q\leq n-1.$ We show that compactness of the dbar-Neumann operator, $N_{p,q+1},$ on square integrable (p,q+1)-forms is equivalent to compactness of the commutators $[P_{p,q}, \bar{z}_j]$ on square integrable dbar-closed (p,q)-forms for $1\leq j\leq n$ where $P_{p,q}$ is the Bergman projection on (p,q)-forms. We also show that compactness of the commutator of the Bergman projection with functions continuous on the closure percolates up in the dbar-complex on dbar-closed forms and square integrable holomorphic for…
This paper establishes connections between the group-Fourier transform and the geometry of measures in the Heisenberg group. Firstly, it is shown that if the Fourier transform of a compactly supported, finite, Radon measure is square integrable, then the measure must have a square integrable density. If it's Fourier transform is integrable, the the measure must have a continuous density. In addition, an alternative formulation of the Fourier transform on the Heisenberg group is used to show that energies of measures can be computed via integrals on an appropriate frequency space. This in turns…
We study the conditions for a nilpotent Lie group to be foliated into subgroups that have square integrable (relative discrete series) unitary representations, that fit together to form a filtration by normal subgroups. Then we use that filtration to construct a class of "stepwise square integrable" representations on which Plancherel measure is concentrated. Further, we work out the character formulae for those stepwise square integrable representations, and we give an explicit Plancherel formula. Next, we use some structure theory to check that all these constructions and results apply to ni…
A classical result of Norbert Wiener characterises doubly shift-invariant subspaces for square integrable functions on the unit circle with respect to a finite positive Borel measure $μ$, as being the ranges of the multiplication maps corresponding to the characteristic functions of $μ$-measurable subsets of the unit circle. An analogue of this result is given for the Besicovitch Hilbert space of `square integrable almost periodic functions'.
