The aim of this paper is to write an explicit orthonormal parallelization for all parallelizable products of spheres, using an explicit isomorphism with a trivial vector bundle.
The purpose of this paper is to give an effective construction for some induced structures on spheres or product of spheres of codimension 1, 2 or 3, respectively, in Euclidean space endowed with an almost product structure.
We discuss the integrability of orthogonal almost complex structures on Riemannian products of even-dimensional round spheres and give a partial answer to the question raised by E. Calabi concerning the existence of complex structures on a product manifold of a round 2-sphere and a round 4-sphere.
Our aim in this paper is to give some examples of $(a, 1)f$ Riemannian structures (a generalization of an $r$-paracontact structure) induced on product of spheres of codimension $r$ ($r \in \{1,2\} $) in an $m$-dimensional Euclidean space ($m>2$), endowed with an almost product structure.
We give explicit formulas for the intertwinors on the scalar functions over the product of spheres with the natural pseudo-Riemannian product metric using the spectrum generating technique. As a consequence, this provides another proof of the even order conformally invariant differential operator formulas obtained earlier by T. Branson and the present author.
In this paper, we obtain a sufficient and necessary condition for a simply connected Riemannian manifold $(M^n, g)$ to be isometrically immersed, as a submanifold with codimension $p\geq 1$, into the product $S^k\times H^{n+p-k}$ of sphere and hyperboloid.
In this paper, we prove that minimal hypersurfaces when $n\geq 3$ and nonzero constant mean curvature hypersurfaces when $n\geq2$ foliated by spheres in parallel horizontal hyperplanes in ${\mathbb{H}}^n \times \mathbb{R}$ must be rotationally symmetric.
We show that various classes of products of manifolds do not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. Exploiting the Ruelle-Sullivan cohomology class, we prove that the product of a negatively curved manifold with a rational homology sphere does not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms. We extend this result to products of finitely many negatively curved manifolds of dimensions at least three with a rational homology sphere that has vanishing simplicial volume. As an application of this study, we obtain new examples of manifolds that do not support transitive Anosov diffeomorphisms, inc…
There exists a well known construction which allows to associate with two hyperbolic affine spheres $f_i: M_i^{n_i} \to \mathbb R^{n_i+1}$ a new hyperbolic affine sphere immersion of $I \times M_1 \times M_2$ into $\mathbb R^{n_1+n_2+3}$. In this paper we deal with the inverse problem: how to determine from properties of the difference tensor whether a given hyperbolic affine sphere immersion of a manifold $M^n \to \mathbb R^{n+1}$ can be decomposed in such a way.
We show a Gromov-Hausdorff approximation to the product of the standard spheres $S^{n-p}\times S^p$ for Riemannian manifolds with positive Ricci curvature under some pinching condition on the eigenvalues of the Laplacian acting on functions and forms.
We give explicit formulas for the intertwinors on the differential form bundles over $S^{p-1} \times S^{q-1}$ with the standard pseudo-Riemannian metric $g=-g_{{}_{S^{p-1}}}+g_{{}_{S^{q-1}}}$ of signature $(p-1,q-1)$. As a special case, we construct conformally invariant differential operators of all even orders.
We consider Yamabe-type equations on the Riemannian product of constant curvature metrics on $\textbf{S}^n \times\textbf{ S}^n$, and study solutions which are invariant by the cohomogeneity one diagonal action of $O(n+1)$. We obtain multiplicity results for both positive and nodal solutions. In particular we prove the existence of nodal solutions of the Yamabe equation on these products which depend non-trivially on both factors
We prove an existence result for the prescribed Ricci curvature equation for certain doubly warped product metrics on $\mathbb{S}^{d_1+1}\times \mathbb{S}^{d_2}$, where $d_i \geq 2$. If $T$ is a metric satisfying certain curvature assumptions, we show that $T$ can be scaled independently on the two factors so as to itself be the Ricci tensor of some metric.
We record an answer to the question "In which dimensions is the connected sum of two closed almost complex manifolds necessarily an almost complex manifold?". In the process of doing so, we are naturally led to ask "For which values of l is the connected sum of l closed almost complex manifolds necessarily an almost complex manifold?". We answer this question, along with its non-compact analogue, using obstruction theory and Yang's results on the existence of almost complex structures on (n-1)-connected 2n-manifolds. Finally, we partially extend Datta and Subramanian's result on the nonexisten…
In this paper we construct Ricci-positive metrics on the connected sum of products of arbitrarily many spheres provided the dimensions of all but one sphere in each summand are at least 3. There are two new technical theorems required to extend previous results on sums of products of two spheres. The first theorem is a gluing construction for Ricci-positive manifolds with corners generalizing a gluing construction of Perelman for Ricci-positive manifolds with boundaries. Our construction gives a sufficient condition for gluing together two Ricci-positive manifolds with corners along isometric …
We study CR geometry in arbitrary codimension, and introduce a process, which we call the Levi-Kahler quotient, for constructing Kahler metrics from CR structures with a transverse torus action. Most of the paper is devoted to the study of Levi-Kahler quotients of toric CR manifolds, and in particular, products of odd dimensional spheres. We obtain explicit descriptions and characterizations of such quotients, and find Levi-Kahler quotients of products of 3-spheres which are extremal in a weighted sense introduced by G. Maschler and the first author.
We consider the conformal class of the Riemannian product $g_0 + g$, where $g_0$ is the constant curvature metric on $S^m$ and $g$ is a metric of constant scalar curvature on some closed manifold. We show that the number of metrics of constant scalar curvature in the conformal class grows at least linearly with respect to the square root of the scalar curvature of $g$. This is obtained by studying radial solutions of the equation $Δu -λu + λu^p =0$ on $S^m$, and the number of solutions in terms of $λ$.
Stable compact minimal submanifolds of the product of a sphere and any Riemannian manifold are classified whenever the dimension of the sphere is at least three. The complete classification of the stable compact minimal submanifolds of the product of two spheres is obtained. Also, it is proved that the only stable compact minimal surfaces of the product of a 2-sphere and any Riemann surface are the complex ones.
Any compact manifold with positive scalar curvature has an associated asymptotically flat metric constructed using the Green's function of the conformal Laplacian, and the mass of this metric is an important geometric invariant. An explicit expression for the mass of the product of spheres $S^2 \times S^2$, both with the same Gaussian curvature, is given. Expressions for the masses of the quotient spaces $G(2,4)$, and $\mathbb{RP}^2 \times \mathbb{RP}^2$ are also given. The values of these masses arise in a construction of critical metrics on certain $4$-manifolds; applications to this problem…
We construct an unbounded representative for the shriek class associated to the embeddings of spheres into Euclidean space. We equip this unbounded Kasparov cycle with a connection and compute the unbounded Kasparov product with the Dirac operator on $\mathbb R^{n+1}$. We find that the resulting spectral triple for the algebra $C(\mathbb S^n)$ differs from the Dirac operator on the round sphere by a so-called index cycle, whose class in $KK_0(\mathbb C, \mathbb C)$ represents the multiplicative unit. At all points we check that our construction involving the unbounded Kasparov product is compa…
The classical Weyl Law says that if $N_M(λ)$ denotes the number of eigenvalues of the Laplace operator on a $d$-dimensional compact manifold $M$ without a boundary that are less than or equal to $λ$, then $$ N_M(λ)=cλ^d+O(λ^{d-1}).$$ In this paper, we show Duistermaat and Guillemin's result allows us to replace the $O(λ^{d-1})$ error with $o(λ^{d-1})$ if $M$ is a product manifold. We quantify this bound in the case of Cartesian product of spheres by reducing the problem to the study of the distribution of weighted integer lattice points in Euclidean space and formulate a conjecture in the gene…
We present a complete classification of Einstein metrics on the space M = I \times S^3, where I is the interval (0,l) or (0,\infty) or their closures, and we consider separate metric functions f and h (functions of I) for the base and fiber of the Hopf fibration S^1 -> S^3 -> S^2. All such metrics yielding smooth and complete manifolds are included and discussed. The results are surprisingly rich, including many well-known examples and several one-parameter families of metrics with a variety of geometries.
There is a rich theory of so-called (strict) nearly Kaehler manifolds, almost-Hermitian manifolds generalising the famous almost complex structure on the 6-sphere induced by octonionic multiplication. Nearly Kaehler 6-manifolds play a distinguished role both in the general structure theory and also because of their connection with singular spaces with holonomy group the compact exceptional Lie group G2: the metric cone over a Riemannian 6-manifold M has holonomy contained in G2 if and only if M is a nearly Kaehler 6-manifold. A central problem in the field has been the absence of any complete …
In this paper we find new examples of Riemannian manifolds with outermost apparent horizons with nonspherical topology, in dimensions four and above. More precisely, for any $n,m\ge1$, we construct asymptotically flat, scalar flat Riemannian manifolds containing smooth outermost minimal hypersurfaces with topology $S^n\times S^{m+1}$. In the context of general relativity these hypersurfaces correspond to outermost apparent horizons of black holes.
We prove a Chern-Lashof type formula computing the expected number of critical points of smooth function on a smooth manifold $M$ randomly chosen from a finite dimensional subspace $V\subset C^\infty(M)$ equipped with a Gaussian probability measure. We then use this formula this formula to find the asymptotics of the expected number of critical points of a random linear combination of a large number eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the round sphere, tori, or a products of two round spheres. In the case $M=S^1$ we show that the number of critical points of a trigonometric polynomial of degree…
The key condition A3w of Ma, Trudinger and Wang for regularity of optimal transportation maps is implied by the nonnegativity of a pseudo-Riemannian curvature -- which we call cross-curvature -- induced by the transportation cost. For the Riemannian distance squared cost, it is shown that (1) cross-curvature nonnegativity is preserved for products of two manifolds; (2) both A3w and cross-curvature nonnegativity are inherited by Riemannian submersions; and (3) the $n$-dimensional round sphere satisfies cross-curvature nonnegativity. From these results, a large new class of Riemannian manifolds …
This article addresses regularity of optimal transport maps for cost="squared distance" on Riemannian manifolds that are products of arbitrarily many round spheres with arbitrary sizes and dimensions. Such manifolds are known to be non-negatively cross-curved [KM2]. Under boundedness and non-vanishing assumptions on the transfered source and target densities we show that optimal maps stay away from the cut-locus (where the cost exhibits singularity), and obtain injectivity and continuity of optimal maps. This together with the result of Liu, Trudinger and Wang [LTW] also implies higher regular…
