This paper introduces a new approach for output feedback stabilization of SISO systems which, unlike most of the techniques found in the literature, does not use high-gain observers and control input saturation to achieve separation between the state feedback and observer designs. Rather, we show that by using nonlinear observers, together with a projection algorithm, the same kind of separation principle is achieved for a larger class of systems, namely stabilizable and incompletely observable plants. Furthermore, this new approach avoids using knowledge of the inverse of the observability mapping, which is needed by most techniques in the literature when controlling general stabilizable systems.
Anantharam showed in 1985 the existence of a model in which some stabilizable plants do not have its right-/left-coprime factorizations. In this paper, we give a condition of the nonexistence of the right-/left-coprime factorizations of stabilizable plants as a generalization of Anantharam's result. As examples of the models which satisfy the condition, we present two models. We illustrate the construction of a stabilizing controller of stabilizable single-input single-output plants of such models.
Control-affine output systems generically present observability singularities, i.e. inputs that make the system unobservable. This proves to be a difficulty in the context of output feedback stabilization, where this issue is usually discarded by uniform observability assumptions for state feedback stabilizable systems. Focusing on state feedback stabilizable bilinear control systems with linear output, we use a transversality approach to provide perturbations of the stabilizing state feedback law, in order to make our system observable in any time even in the presence of singular inputs.
This paper addresses an open problem in the area of linear quadratic optimal control. We consider the regular, infinite-horizon, stability-modulo-a-subspace, indefinite linear quadratic problem under the assumption that the dynamics are stabilizable. Our result generalizes previous works dealing with the same problem in the case of controllable dynamics. We explicitly characterize the unique solution of the algebraic Riccati equation that gives the optimal cost and optimal feedback control, as well as necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of optimal controls.
In this paper, we study the problem of stabilizing switched linear systems when only limited information about the state and the mode of the system is available, which occurs in many applications involving networked switched systems (such as cyber-physical systems, IoT, etc.). First, we show that switched linear systems with arbitrary switching, i.e., with no constraint on the switching signal, are in general not stabilizable with a finite data rate. Then, drawing on this result, we restrict our attention to systems satisfying a fairly mild slow-switching assumption, in the sense that the swit…
The problem of controlling surge and stall in jet engine compressors is of fundamental importance in preventing damage and lengthening the life of these components. In this paper, we use the Moore-Greitzer mathematical model to develop an output feedback controller for these two instabilities (only one of the three states is measurable). This problem is particularly challenging since the system is not completely observable and, hence, none of the output feedback control techniques found in the literature can be applied to recover the performance of a full state feedback controller. However, we…
This paper aims at completing an earlier work of Russell and Zhang to study internal control problems for the distributed parameter system described by the Korteweg-de Vries equation on a periodic domain T^1. In their article, Russell and Zhang showed that the system is locally exactly controllable and locally exponentially stabilizable when the control acts on an arbitrary nonempty subdomain of T^1. In this paper, we show that the system is in fact globally exactly controllable and globally exponentially stabilizable. The global exponential stabilizability corresponding to a natural feedback …
This paper is concerned with the coordinate-free approach to control systems. The coordinate-free approach is a factorization approach but does not require the coprime factorizations of the plant. We present two criteria for feedback stabilizability for MIMO systems in which transfer functions belong to the total rings of fractions of commutative rings. Both of them are generalizations of Sule's results in [SIAM J. Control Optim., 32-6, 1675-1695(1994)]. The first criterion is expressed in terms of modules generated from a causal plant and does not require the plant to be strictly causal. It s…

We propose a novel framework for learning stabilizable nonlinear dynamical systems for continuous control tasks in robotics. The key contribution is a control-theoretic regularizer for dynamics fitting rooted in the notion of stabilizability, a constraint which guarantees the existence of robust tracking controllers for arbitrary open-loop trajectories generated with the learned system. Leveraging tools from contraction theory and statistical learning in Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Spaces, we formulate stabilizable dynamics learning as a functional optimization with convex objective and bi-conv…
This paper focuses on the problem of constructing time-varying feedback laws that asymptotically stabilize a given part of the state variables for nonlinear control-affine systems. It is assumed that the class of systems under consideration satisfies nonlinear controllability conditions with respect to the stabilizable variables. Under these assumptions, a time-periodic feedback control is constructed explicitly by using the inversion of the matrix composed of the control vector fields and their Lie brackets. The proposed control design scheme is applied to solving the leader-following problem…
Feedback asymptotic stabilization of control systems is an important topic of control theory and applications. Broadly speaking, if the system $\dot{x} = f(x,u)$ is locally asymptotically stabilizable, then there exists a feedback control $u(x)$ ensuring the convergence to an equilibrium for any trajectory starting from a point sufficiently close to the equilibrium state. In this paper, we develop a reasonably natural and general composition operator approach to stabilizability. To begin with, we provide an extension of the classical Hautus lemma to the generalized context of composition opera…
Synchronization of coupled continuous-time linear systems is studied in a general setting. For identical neutrally-stable linear systems that are detectable from their outputs, it is shown that a linear output feedback law exists under which the coupled systems globally asymptotically synchronize under all fixed (directed) connected network topologies. An algorithm is provided to compute one such feedback law based on individual system parameters. The dual case, where individual systems are neutrally stable and stabilizable from their inputs, is also considered and parallel results are establi…
In this second part we prove that the full nonlinear fluid-solid system introduced in Part I is stabilizable by deformations of the solid that have to satisfy nonlinear constraints. Some of these constraints are physical and guarantee the self-propelled nature of the solid. The proof is based on the boundary feedback stabilization of the linearized system. From this boundary feedback operator we construct a deformation of the solid which satisfies the aforementioned constraints and which stabilizes the nonlinear system. The proof is made by a fixed point method.
Lyapunov-Krasowskii functionals are used to design quantized control laws for nonlinear continuous-time systems in the presence of constant delays in the input. The quantized control law is implemented via hysteresis to prevent chattering. Under appropriate conditions, our analysis applies to stabilizable nonlinear systems for any value of the quantization density. The resulting quantized feedback is parametrized with respect to the quantization density. Moreover, the maximal allowable delay tolerated by the system is characterized as a function of the quantization density.
We present a framework to design nonlinear robust output feedback model predictive control (MPC) schemes that ensure constraint satisfaction under noisy output measurements and disturbances. We provide novel estimation methods to bound the magnitude of the estimation error based on: stability properties of the observer; detectability; set-membership estimation; moving horizon estimation (MHE). Robust constraint satisfaction is guaranteed by suitably incorporating these online validated bounds on the estimation error in a homothetic tube based MPC formulation. In addition, we show how the perfo…

While for coupled hyperbolic PDEs of first order there now exist numerous PDE backstepping designs, systems with zero speed, i.e., without convection but involving infinite-dimensional ODEs, which arise in many applications, from environmental engineering to lasers to manufacturing, have received virtually no attention. In this paper, we introduce single-input boundary feedback designs for a linear 1-D hyperbolic system with two counterconvecting PDEs and $n$ equations (infinite-dimensional ODEs) with zero characteristic speed. The inclusion of zero-speed states, which we refer to as {\em atac…
The task of inducing, via continuous static state-feedback control, an asymptotically stable heteroclinic orbit in a nonlinear control system is considered in this paper. The main motivation comes from the problem of ensuring convergence to a so-called point-to-point maneuver in an underactuated mechanical system. Namely, to a smooth curve in its state--control space, which is consistent with the system dynamics and connects two (linearly) stabilizable equilibrium points. The proposed method uses a particular parameterization, together with a state projection onto the maneuver as to combine tw…
The paper deals with the problem of output regulation in a "non-equilibrium" context for a special class of multivariable nonlinear systems stabilizable by high-gain feedback. A post-processing internal model design suitable for the multivariable nature of the system, which might have more inputs than regulation errors, is proposed. Uncertainties in the system and exosystem are dealt with by assuming that the ideal steady state input belongs to a certain "class of signals" by which an appropriate model set for the internal model can be derived. The adaptation mechanism for the internal model i…
We present a model predictive control (MPC) framework to solve the constrained nonlinear output regulation problem. The main feature of the proposed framework is that the application does not require the solution to classical regulator (Francis-Byrnes-Isidori) equations or any other offline design procedure. In particular, the proposed formulation simply minimizes the predicted output error, possibly with some input regularization. Instead of using terminal cost/sets or a positive definite stage cost as is standard in MPC theory, we build on the theoretical results by Grimm et al. 2005 using a…
In this paper, we present a quasi infinite horizon nonlinear model predictive control (MPC) scheme for tracking of generic reference trajectories. This scheme is applicable to nonlinear systems, which are locally incrementally stabilizable. For such systems, we provide a reference generic offline procedure to compute an incrementally stabilizing feedback with a continuously parameterized quadratic quasi infinite horizon terminal cost. As a result we get a nonlinear reference tracking MPC scheme with a valid terminal cost for general reachable reference trajectories without increasing the onlin…
