We formulate the $P<NP$ hypothesis in the case of the satisfiability problem as a $Π^0_2$ sentence, out of which we can construct a partial recursive function $f_{\neg A}$ so that $f_{\neg A}$ is total if and only if $P < NP$. We then show that if $f_{\neg A}$ is total, then it isn't ${\cal T}$--provably total (where ${\cal T}$ is a fragment of ZFC that adequately extends PA and whose consistency is of ordinal order). Follows that the negation of $P < NP$, that is, $P = NP$, is consistent with those ${\cal T}$.
We prove that the class of all ordinals Ord is not weakly compact with respect to definable classes. Specifically, in any model of ZFC, the definable tree property fails for Ord, in that there is a definable Ord tree with no definable cofinal branch; the definable partition property fails, in that there is a definable 2-coloring of pairs from a certain definable proper class, with no definable homogeneous proper class; and the definable compactness property fails for $\mathcal{L}_{\infty,ω}$, in that there is a definable theory in this logic all of whose set-sized subtheories are satisfiable, …
It is shown that the existence of a measurable cardinal is equiconsistent to a model of ZFC in which there is no ordinal-definable, stationary, costationary subset of $ω_1$
We propose a natural theory SO axiomatizing the class of sets of ordinals in a model of ZFC set theory. Both theories possess equal logical strength. Constructibility theory in SO corresponds to a natural recursion theory on ordinals.
Let kappa be the least ordinal alpha such that L_{alpha}(R) is admissible. Let A be the set of reals x such that x is ordinal definable in L_α(R), for some alpha<kappa. It is well known that (assuming determinacy) A is the largest countable inductive set of reals. Let T be the following theory: ZFC - Replacement + "There exists $ω$ Woodin cardinals which are cofinal in the ordinals." T has consistency strength weaker than that of the theory ZFC + "There exists omega Woodin cardinals", but stronger than that of the theory ZFC + "There exists n Woodin Cardinals", for each n. Let M be the canonic…
We consider the constructive ordinal notation system for the ordinal ${ε_0}$ that were introduced by L.D. Beklemishev. There are fragments of this system that are ordinal notation systems for the smaller ordinals ${ω_n}$ (towers of $ω$-exponentiations of the height $n$). This systems are based on Japaridze's provability logic $\mathbf{GLP}$. They are closely related with the technique of ordinal analysis of $\mathbf{PA}$ and fragments of $\mathbf{PA}$ based on iterated reflection principles. We consider this notation system and it's fragments as structures with the signatures selected in a nat…
ZFC has sentences that quantify over all sets or all ordinals, without restriction. Some have argued that sentences of this kind lack a determinate meaning. We propose a set theory called TOPS, using Natural Deduction, that avoids this problem by speaking only about particular sets.
Diekert, Matiyasevich and Muscholl proved that the existential first-order theory of a trace monoid over a finite alphabet is decidable. We extend this result to a natural class of trace monoids with infinitely many generators. As an application, we prove that for every ordinal $λ$ less than $\varepsilon_0$, the existential theory of the set of successor ordinals less than $λ$ equipped with multiplication is decidable.
This paper contributes to the theory of large cardinals beyond the Kunen inconsistency, or choiceless large cardinal axioms, in the context where the Axiom of Choice is not assumed. The first part of the paper investigates a periodicity phenomenon: assuming choiceless large cardinal axioms, the properties of the cumulative hierarchy turn out to alternate between even and odd ranks. The second part of the paper explores the structure of ultrafilters under choiceless large cardinal axioms, exploiting the fact that these axioms imply a weak form of the author's Ultrapower Axiom. The third and fin…
We specify the frontier of decidability for fragments of the first-order theory of ordinal multiplication. We give a NEXPTIME lower bound for the complexity of the existential fragment of $\langle ω^{ω^λ}; \times, ω, ω+1, ω^2+1 \rangle$ for every ordinal $λ$. Moreover, we prove (by reduction from Hilbert Tenth Problem) that the $\exists^*\forall^{6}$-fragment of $\langle ω^{ω^λ}; \times \rangle$ is undecidable for every ordinal $λ$.
We explore the possibilities for elementary embeddings $j : M \to N$, where $M$ and $N$ are models of ZFC with the same ordinals, $M \subseteq N$, and $N$ has access to large pieces of $j$. We construct commuting systems of such maps between countable transitive models that are isomorphic to various canonical linear and partial orders, including the real line $\mathbb R$.
We will consider a number of new large-cardinal properties, the $α$-tremendous cardinals for each limit ordinal $α>0$, the hyper-tremendous cardinals, the $α$-enormous cardinals for each limit ordinal $α>0$, and the hyper-enormous cardinals. For limit ordinals $α>0$, the $α$-tremendous cardinals and hyper-tremendous cardinals have consistency strength between I3 and I2. An $ω$-enormous cardinal has consistency strength greater than I0, and also all the large-cardinal axioms discussed in the second part of Hugh Woodin's paper on suitable extender models, not known to be inconsistent with ZFC an…
Fix a finite ordinal n>2. We show that there exists an atomic, simple and countable representable CA_n, such that its minimal completion is outside SNr_nCA_{n+3}. Hence, for any finite k\geq 3, the variety SNr_nCA_{n+k} is not atom-canonical, so that the variety of CA_n's having n+k-flat representations is not atom-canonical, too. We show, for finite k\geq 3, that S_cNr_nCA_{n+k} is not elementary, hence the class of CA_n's having complete n+3-smooth representations is not elementary. We obtain analogous results by replacing flat and smooth, respectively, by (the weaker notion of) square; this…
In this paper the lightface $Π^{1}_{1}$-Comprehension axiom is shown to be proof-theoretically strong even over $\mbox{RCA}_{0}^{*}$, and we calibrate the proof-theoretic ordinals of weak fragments of the theory $\mbox{ID}_{1}$ of positive inductive definitions over natural numbers. Conjunctions of negative and positive formulas in the transfinite induction axiom of $\mbox{ID}_{1}$ are shown to be weak, and disjunctions are strong. Thus we draw a boundary line between predicatively reducible and impredicative fragments of $\mbox{ID}_{1}$.
For any ordinal Λ, we can define a polymodal logic GLP(Λ), with a modality [ξ] for each ξ<Λ. These represent provability predicates of increasing strength. Although GLP(Λ) has no Kripke models, Ignatiev showed that indeed one can construct a Kripke model of the variable-free fragment with natural number modalities. Later, Icard defined a topological model for the same fragment which is very closely related to Ignatiev's. In this paper we show how to extend these constructions for arbitrary Λ. More generally, for each Θ,Λwe build a Kripke model I(Θ,Λ) and a topological model T(Θ,Λ), and show th…
The Maximality Principle MP is a scheme which states that if a sentence of the language of ZFC is true in some forcing extension V^P, and remains true in any further forcing extension of V^P, then it is true in all forcing extensions of V. A modified maximality principle MP_Gamma arises when considering forcing with a particular class Gamma of forcing notions. A parametrized form of such a principle, MP_Gamma(X), considers formulas taking parameters; to avoid inconsistency such parameters must be restricted to a specific set X which depends on the forcing class Gamma being considered. A strong…
The structure ${\cal C}_2:=(1^\infty,\le,\le_1,\le_2)$, introduced and first analyzed in Carlson and Wilken 2012 (APAL), is shown to be elementary recursive. Here, $1^\infty$ denotes the proof-theoretic ordinal of the fragment $Π^1_1$-$\mathrm{CA}_0$ of second order number theory, or equivalently the set theory $\mathrm{KPl}_0$, which axiomatizes limits of models of Kripke-Platek set theory with infinity. The partial orderings $\le_1$ and $\le_2$ denote the relations of $Σ_1$- and $Σ_2$-elementary substructure, respectively. In a subsequent article we will show that the structure ${\cal C}_2$ …
