We define a fuchsian affine action of a surface group to be such that the linear part factors through a representation of $SL(2,{\mathbb R})$. We prove a fuchsian affine action of a surface group is never proper.
A Margulis spacetime is a complete flat Lorentzian 3-manifold M with free fundamental group. Associated to M is a noncompact complete hyperbolic surface S homotopy-equivalent to M. The purpose of this paper is to classify Margulis spacetimes when S is homeomorphic to a one-holed torus. We show that every such M decomposes into polyhedra bounded by crooked planes, corresponding to an ideal triangulation of S. This paper classifies and analyzes the structure of crooked ideal triangles, which play the same role for Margulis spacetimes as ideal triangles play for hyperbolic surfaces. This extends …
In his 1990 doctoral thesis, Todd Drumm showed that proper affine deformations of free Fuchsian groups could be constructed as Schottky groups using a new family of hypersurfaces called "crooked planes." The existence of proper affine deformations of Fuchsian Schottky groups was demonstrated by Margulis in the early 1980's, answering a question raised by Milnor in 1977. This paper expounds Drumm's result, at least in the case of Fuchsian Schottky groups (that is, when the group contains no parabolic elements).
We compare critical exponent for quasi-Fuchsian groups acting on the hyperbolic 3-space, $\mathbb{H}^3$, and on invariant disks embedded in $\mathbb{H}^3$. We give a rigidity theorem for all embedded surfaces when the action is Fuchsian and a rigidity theorem for negatively curved surfaces when the action is quasi-Fuchsian.
This survey is an introduction to the geometry of co-Minkowksi space, the space of unoriented spacelike hyperplanes of the Minkowski space. Affine deformations of cocompact lattices of hyperbolic isometries act on it, in a way similar to the way that quasi-Fuchsian groups act on hyperbolic space. In particular, there is a convex core. There is also a unique "mean" hypersurface, i.e. with traceless second fundamental form. The mean distance between the mean hypersurface and the lower boundary of the convex core endows the space of affine deformations of a given lattice with an asymmetric norm. …
We study the Liouville action for quasi-Fuchsian groups with parabolic and elliptic elements. In particular, when the group is Fuchsian, the contribution of elliptic elements to the classical Liouville action is derived in terms of the Bloch-Wigner functions. We prove the first and second variation formulas for the classical Liouville action on the quasi-Fuchsian deformation space. We prove an equality expressing the holography principle, which relates the Liouville action and the renormalized volume for quasi-Fuchsian groups with parabolic and elliptic elements. We also construct the potentia…
We rigorously define the Liouville action functional for finitely generated, purely loxodromic quasi-Fuchsian group using homology and cohomology double complexes naturally associated with the group action. We prove that the classical action - the critical point of the Liouville action functional, considered as a function on the quasi-Fuchsian deformation space, is an antiderivative of a 1-form given by the difference of Fuchsian and quasi-Fuchsian projective connections. This result can be considered as global quasi-Fuchsian reciprocity which implies McMullen's quasi-Fuchsian reciprocity. We …
The hyperbolic space $ \H^d$ can be defined as a pseudo-sphere in the $(d+1)$ Minkowski space-time. In this paper, a Fuchsian group $Γ$ is a group of linear isometries of the Minkowski space such that $\H^d/Γ$ is a compact manifold. We introduce Fuchsian convex bodies, which are closed convex sets in Minkowski space, globally invariant for the action of a Fuchsian group. A volume can be associated to each Fuchsian convex body, and, if the group is fixed, Minkowski addition behaves well. Then Fuchsian convex bodies can be studied in the same manner as convex bodies of Euclidean space in the cla…
Associated to every complete affine 3-manifold M with nonsolvable fundamental group is a noncompact hyperbolic surface S. We classify such complete affine structures when Sigma is homeomorphic to a three-holed sphere. In particular, for every such complete hyperbolic surface Sigma, the deformation space identifies with two opposite octants in R^3. Furthermore every M admits a fundamental polyhedron bounded by crooked planes. Therefore M is homeomorphic to an open solid handlebody of genus two. As an explicit application of this theory, we construct proper affine deformations of an arithmetic F…
A Fuchsian polyhedron in hyperbolic space is a polyhedral surface invariant under the action of a Fuchsian group of isometries (i.e. a group of isometries leaving globally invariant a totally geodesic surface, on which it acts cocompactly). The induced metric on a convex Fuchsian polyhedron is isometric to a hyperbolic metric with conical singularities of positive singular curvature on a compact surface of genus greater than one. We prove that these metrics are actually realised by exactly one convex Fuchsian polyhedron (up to global isometries). This extends a famous theorem of A.D. Alexandro…
We give some concrete examples of moduli spaces of connections. Precisely, we explain how to explicitly construct the moduli spaces of rank 2 fuchsian systems and logarithmic connections on the Riemann sphere with 4 poles. The former ones are affine cubic surfaces; the latter ones are analytically isomorphic to affine surfaces but not algebraically: they do not carry non constant regular functions. We end with some remark on arbitrary number of poles.
We will first clarify the loop group formulations for both hyperbolic and elliptic definite affine spheres in R^3. Then we classify the rational elements with 3 poles or 6 poles in a real twisted loop group, and compute dressing actions of them on such surfaces. Some new examples with pictures will be produced at last.
In 1995, C.-L. Terng associated to each hyperpolar action on a compact symmetric space, a hyperpolar proper Fredholm (PF) action on a Hilbert space. This is a group action by an infinite dimensional path group and it acts on a Hilbert space via the gauge transformations. Those two hyperpolar actions are related through an equivariant Riemannian submersion called the parallel transport map and they have close relations to the infinite dimensional symmetric spaces called affine Kac-Moody symmetric spaces. In this paper we define a linear isomorphism between Hilbert spaces and show that it is equ…
Gromov showed that for fixed, arbitrarily large C, any uniformly C-Lipschitz affine action of a random group in his graph model on a Hilbert space has a fixed point. We announce a theorem stating that more general affine actions of the same random group on a Hilbert space have a fixed point. We discuss some aspects of the proof.
To any connected and simply connected nilpotent Lie group N, one can associate its group of affine transformations Aff(N). In this paper, we study simply transitive actions of a given nilpotent Lie group G on another nilpotent Lie group N, via such affine transformations. We succeed in translating the existence question of such a simply transitive affine action to a corresponding question on the Lie algebra level. As an example of the possible use of this translation, we then consider the case where dim(G)=dim(N) less than 6. Finally, we specialize to the case of abelian simply transitive affi…
We use an elliptic differential equation of Tzitzeica type to construct a minimal Lagrangian surface in CH2 from the data of a compact hyperbolic Riemann surface and a small holomorphic cubic differential. The minimal Lagrangian surface is invariant under an SU(2,1) action of the fundamental group. We further parameterise a neighborhood of the R-Fuchsian representations in the representation space by pairs consisting of a point in Teichmuller space and a small cubic differential. By constructing a fundamental domain, we show these representations are complex-hyperbolic quasi-Fuchsian, thus rec…
Consider a lattice $Γ$ in a group $G = SL_2(\R), SO(1,n), SU(1,n)$, $SL_2(\Q_p)$. We discuss actions of $Γ$ by affine isometric transformations of Hilbert spaces. We show that for irreducible affine isometric action of $G$ its restriction to $Γ$ is irreducible. We prove the existence of canonical irreducible affine isometric actions of $Γ$ associated to actions of $Γ$ on $\R$- trees. Using such actions we construct irreducible representations of semigroup of probabilistic measures on $Γ$ and construct the series of representations of the groups of diffeomorphisms of Riemann surfaces enumerated…
We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an affine deformation of a Schottky subgroup of O(2,1) to act properly on affine space. There exists a real-valued biaffine map between the cohomology of the Schottky group and the space of geodesic currents on the corresponding hyperbolic surface S. For a fixed cohomology class, this map is uniformly positive or uniformly negative on the space of geodesic currents if and only if the corresponding affine deformation is proper. As a corollary, the deformation space of proper affine deformations is an open convex cone.
We introduce higher strip deformations, which give a way of constructing affine deformations of discrete free groups in the image of the irreducible representation $\operatorname{PSL}_2\mathbb{R}\to \operatorname{SO}(2n,2n-1)$. We use the Margulis invariant to find a properness condition for these deformations, showing that each convex cocompact free group admits affine deformations acting properly on $\mathbb{R}^{4n-1}$. Using our method we can also construct proper affine actions of virtually free groups, which we demonstrate by finding proper actions of $C_2 \star C_3$ on $\mathbb{R}^7.$
For a Lie group $G$ and a vector bundle $E$ we study those actions of the Lie group $TG$ on $E$ for which the action map $TG\times E \to E$ is a morphism of vector bundles, and call those \emph{affine actions}. We prove that the category $\mathrm{Vect}_{TG}^{\mathrm{aff}}\left(X\right)$ of such actions over a fixed $G$-manifold $X$ is equivalent to a certain slice category $\mathfrak g_X \backslash \mathrm{Vect}_G\left(X\right)$. We show that there is a monadic adjunction relating $\mathrm{Vect}_{TG}^{\mathrm{aff}}\left(X\right)$ to $\mathrm{Vect}_G\left(X\right)$, and the right adjoint of thi…
We introduce post-Lie algebra structures on pairs of Lie algebras $(\Lg,\Ln)$ defined on a fixed vector space $V$. Special cases are LR-structures and pre-Lie algebra structures on Lie algebras. We show that post-Lie algebra structures naturally arise in the study of NIL-affine actions on nilpotent Lie groups. We obtain several results on the existence of post-Lie algebra structures, in terms of the algebraic structure of the two Lie algebras $\Lg$ and $\Ln$. One result is, for example, that if there exists a post-Lie algebra structure on $(\Lg,\Ln)$, where $\Lg$ is nilpotent, then $\Ln$ must …
Properly discontinuous actions of a surface group by affine automorphisms of $\mathbb R^d$ were shown to exist by Danciger-Gueritaud-Kassel. We show, however, that if the linear part of an affine surface group action is in the Hitchin component, then the action fails to be properly discontinuous. The key case is that of linear part in $\mathsf{SO}(n,n-1)$, so that the affine action is by isometries of a flat pseudo-Riemannian metric on $\mathbb R^d$ of signature $(n,n-1)$. Here, the translational part determines a deformation of the linear part into $\mathsf{PSO}(n,n)$-Hitchin representations …
