We present a local existence result for the three dimensional incompressible Euler equations. The solution is constructed using a formulation of the equations as an active vector system in Eulerian coordinates. The formulation employs the inverse of the Lagrangian path map (the "back-to-labels" map) and its Eulerian gradient. We express sufficient conditions for regularity in terms of this gradient.
We discuss the Lagrangian-Eulerian framework for hydrodynamic models and provide a proof of Lipschitz dependence of solutions on initial data in path space. The paper presents a corrected version of the result in \cite{c1}.
We present a Lagrangian-Eulerian strategy for proving uniqueness and local existence of solutions in path spaces of limited smoothness for a class of incompressible hydrodynamic models including Oldroyd-B type complex fluid models and zero magnetic resistivity magneto-hydrodynamics equations.
This work presents an approach to the Navier-Stokes equations that is phrased in unbiased Eulerian coordinates, yet describes objects that have Lagrangian significance: particle paths, their dispersion and diffusion. The commutator between Lagrangian and Eulerian derivatives plays an important role in the Navier-Stokes equations: it contributes a singular perturbation to the Euler equations, in addition to the Laplacian. Bounds for the Lagrangian displacements, their first and second derivatives are obtained without assumptions. Some of these rigorous bounds can be interpreted in terms of the …
The Camassa-Holm equation and its two-component Camassa-Holm system generalization both experience wave breaking in finite time. To analyze this, and to obtain solutions past wave breaking, it is common to reformulate the original equation given in Eulerian coordinates, into a system of ordinary differential equations in Lagrangian coordinates. It is of considerable interest to study the stability of solutions and how this is manifested in Eulerian and Lagrangian variables. We identify criteria of convergence, such that convergence in Eulerian coordinates is equivalent to convergence in Lagran…
We prove the existence of local-in-time smooth solutions of the incompressible semi-geostrophic equations expressed in Eulerian co-ordinates in 3-dimensional smooth bounded simply-connected domains. Our solutions adhere to Cullen's Stability Principle in that the geopotential is guaranteed to be a convex map for all times of its existence. We achieve our results by appealing to the theory of so-called div-curl systems (or Hodge systems), making use of recent results of Wang, which yield useful estimates on the ageostrophic velocity field. To our knowledge, this work constitutes the first time …
We consider the incompressible Euler equations on ${\mathbb R}^d$, where $d \in \{ 2,3 \}$. We prove that: (a) In Lagrangian coordinates the equations are locally well-posed in spaces with fixed real-analyticity radius (more generally, a fixed Gevrey-class radius). (b) In Lagrangian coordinates the equations are well-posed in highly anisotropic spaces, e.g.~Gevrey-class regularity in the label $a_1$ and Sobolev regularity in the labels $a_2,...,a_d$. (c) In Eulerian coordinates both results (a) and (b) above are false.
In 2000 Constantin showed that the incompressible Euler equations can be written in an "Eulerian-Lagrangian" form which involves the back-to-labels map (the inverse of the trajectory map for each fixed time). In the same paper a local existence result is proved in certain Hölder spaces $C^{1,μ}$. We review the Eulerian-Lagrangian formulation of the equations and prove that given initial data in $H^s$ for $n\geq2$ and $s>\frac{n}{2}+1$, a unique local-in-time solution exists on the $n$-torus that is continuous into $H^s$ and $C^1$ into $H^{s-1}$. These solutions automatically have $C^1$ traject…
This paper is devoted to the study of multi-agent deterministic optimal control problems. We initially provide a thorough analysis of the Lagrangian, Eulerian and Kantorovich formulations of the problems, as well as of their relaxations. Then we exhibit some equivalence results among the various representations and compare the respective value functions. To do it, we combine techniques and ideas from optimal transportation, control theory, Young measures and evolution equations in Banach spaces. We further exploit the connections among Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions to derive consistency…
In this article we present a one-field monolithic finite element method in the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation for Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problems. The method only solves for one velocity field in the whole FSI domain, and it solves in a monolithic manner so that the fluid solid interface conditions are satisfied automatically. We prove that the proposed scheme is unconditionally stable, through energy analysis, by utilising a conservative formulation and an exact quadrature rule. We implement the algorithm using both ${\bf F}$-scheme and ${\bf d}$-scheme, and demons…
We consider the three-dimensional incompressible free-boundary Euler equations in a bounded domain and with surface tension. Using Lagrangian coordinates, we establish a priori estimates for solutions with minimal regularity assumptions on the initial data.
We discuss different notions of continuous solutions to the balance law \[u_t + (f(u ))_x =g \] with $g$ bounded, $f\in C^{2}$, extending previous works relative to the flux $f(u)=u^{2}$. We establish the equivalence among distributional solutions and a suitable notion of Lagrangian solutions for general smooth fluxes. We eventually find that continuous solutions are Kruzkov iso-entropy solutions, which yields uniqueness for the Cauchy problem. We also establish the ODE reduction on any characteristics under the sharp assumption that the set of inflection points of the flux $f$ is negligible. …
In this paper we show that the incompressible Euler equation on the Sobolev space $H^s(\R^n)$, $s > n/2+1$, can be expressed in Lagrangian coordinates as a geodesic equation on an infinite dimensional manifold. Moreover the Christoffel map describing the geodesic equation is real analytic. The dynamics in Lagrangian coordinates is described on the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms, which is an analytic submanifold of the whole diffeomorphism group. Furthermore it is shown that a Sobolev class vector field integrates to a curve on the diffeomorphism group.
We discuss general incompressible inviscid models, including the Euler equations, the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, incompressible porous medium equation, and Boussinesq equations. All these models have classical unique solutions, at least for short time. We show that they have real analytic Lagrangian paths. More precisely, we show that as long as a solution of any of these equations is in a class of regularity that assures Hölder continuous gradients of velocity, the corresponding Lagrangian paths are real analytic functions of time. The method of proof is conceptually straightforward …
We give a geometric formulation of 3D incompressible Euler that contains the Eulerian and Lagrangian gauges as special cases. In the Lagrangian gauge, incompressible Euler is a real analytic ODE in Banach space; a short proof of this known result is given. We then describe (in a self-contained section) some basic properties of a hypothetical self-similar solution to 3D incompressible Euler.
In the first part of this paper we establish a uniqueness result for continuity equations with velocity field whose derivative can be represented by a singular integral operator of an $L^1$ function, extending the Lagrangian theory in \cite{BouchutCrippa13}. The proof is based on a combination of a stability estimate via optimal transport techniques developed in \cite{Seis16a} and some tools from harmonic analysis introduced in \cite{BouchutCrippa13}. In the second part of the paper, we address a question that arose in \cite{FilhoMazzucatoNussenzveig06}, namely whether 2D Euler solutions obtai…
