Transformations between different analytic descriptions of constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces are established. In particular, it is demonstrated that the system \[ \begin{split} &\partial ψ_{1} = (|ψ_{1}|^{2} + |ψ_{2}|^{2}) ψ_{2} \\ &\bar{\partial} ψ_{2} =- (|ψ_{1}|^{2} + |ψ_{2}|^{2}) ψ_{1} \end{split} \] descriptive of CMC surfaces within the framework of the generalized Weierstrass representation, decouples into a direct sum of the elliptic Sh-Gordon and Laplace equations. Connections of this system with the sigma model equations are established. It is pointed out, that the instanton solutions correspond to different Weierstrass parametrizations of the standard sphere $S^{2} \subset E^{3}$.
We look at complete minimal surfaces of finite total curvature in $\mathbb{R}^4$. Similarly to the case of complex curves in $\mathbb{C}^2$ we introduce their {\it link at infinity}; we derive the {\it writhe number at infinity} which gives a formula for the total normal curvature of the surface. The knowledge of the link at infinity can sometimes help us determine if a surface has self-intersection and we illustrate this idea by looking at genus zero surfaces of small total curvature.
A differential geometric characterization of the braid-index of a link is found. After multiplication by 2pi, it equals the infimum of the sum of total curvature and total absolute torsion over holonomic representatives of the link. Upper and lower bounds for the infimum of total curvature over holonomic representatives of a link are given in terms of its braid- and bridge-index. Examples showing that these bounds are sharp are constructed.
We describe the $ν$-lines of curvature of an embedding of the double torus into $\mathbb R^4$, defined as the link of the real part of the Milnor fibration of a polynomial, where $ν$ is its gradient. Through this analysis, we present a complete description of the foliation of lines of curvature of the embedding, defined as the image of the stereographic projection of this link into $\mathbb R^3$.
We show that a certain simply-stated notion of "analytic completeness" of the image of a real analytic map implies the map admits no analytic extension. We also give a useful criterion for that notion of analytic completeness by defining arc-properness of continuous maps, which can be considered as a very weak version of properness. As an application, we judge the analytic completeness of a certain class of constant mean curvature surfaces (the so-called "G-catenoids") or their analytic extensions in the de Sitter 3-space.
Catenoids in de Sitter $3$-space $S^3_1$ belong to a certain class of space-like constant mean curvature one surfaces. In a previous work, the authors classified such catenoids, and found that two different classes of countably many exceptional elliptic catenoids are not realized as closed subsets in $S^3_1$. Here we show that such exceptional catenoids have closed analytic extensions in $S^3_1$ with interesting properties.
We use the solution space of a pair of ODEs of at least second order to construct a smooth surface in Euclidean space. We describe when this surface is a proper embedding which is geodesically complete with finite total Gauss curvature. If the associated roots of the ODEs are real and distinct, we give a universal upper bound for the total Gauss curvature of the surface which depends only on the orders of the ODEs and we show that the total Gauss curvature of the surface vanishes if the ODEs are second order. We examine when the surfaces are asymptotically minimal.
In this paper, we report a "new" continuity path which links the constant scalar curvature equation to a second order elliptic equation. This is largely an expository article where we describes various aspects of geometry and analysis associated with path.
For certain compact complex Fano manifolds $M$ with reductive Lie algebras of holomorphic vector fields, we determine the analytic subvariety of the second cohomology group of $M$ consisting of Kähler classes whose Bando-Calabi-Futaki character vanishes. Then a Kähler class contains a Kähler metric of constant scalar curvature if and only if the Kähler class is contained in the analytic subvariety. On examination of the analytic subvariety, it is shown that $M$ admits infinitely many nonhomothetic Kähler classes containing Kähler metrics of constant scalar curvature but does not admit any Kähl…
Inspired by Hongjie Dong and Qi S. Zhang's article \cite{ZQ2}, we find that the analyticity in time for a smooth solution of the heat equation with exponential quadratic growth in the space variable can be extended to any complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with Bakry-Émery Ricci curvature bounded below and the potential function being of at most quadratic growth. Therefore, our result holds on all gradient Ricci solitons. As a corollary, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the solvability of the backward heat equation in a class of functions with the similar growth condition.…
We give necessary and sufficient local conditions for the simultaneous unitarizability of a set of analytic matrix maps from an analytic 1-manifold into SL_n(C) under conjugation by a single analytic matrix map. We apply this result to the monodromy arising from an integrable partial differential equation to construct a family of k-noids, genus-zero constant mean curvature surfaces with three or more ends in Euclidean, spherical and hyperbolic 3-spaces.
We study subgroups of fundamental groups of real analytic closed 4-manifolds with nonpositive sectional curvature. In particular, we are interested in the following question: if a subgroup of the fundamental group is not virtually free abelian, does it contain a free group of rank two ? The technique involves the theory of general metric spaces of nonpositive curvature.
We characterize the global maximizers of a certain non-local functional defined on the space of all positively curved metrics on an ample line bundle L over a Kahler manifold X. This functional is an adjoint version, introduced by Berndtsson, of Donaldson's L-functional and generalizes the Ding-Tian functional whose critical points are Kahler-Einstein metrics of positive Ricci curvature. Applications to (1) analytic torsions on Fano manifolds (2) Chern-Simons-Higgs vortices on tori and (3) Kahler geometry are given. In particular, proofs of conjectures of (1) Gillet-Soulé and Fang (concerning …
In the study manifolds of Ricci curvature bounded below, a stumbling obstruction is the lack of links between large-scale geometry and small-scale geometry at a fixed reference point. There have been few links (volume, dimension) when the unit ball at the point is not collapsed, that is, $\mathrm{vol}(B_1(p))\ge v>0$. In this paper, we conjecture a new link in terms of isometries: if the maximal displacement of an isometry $f$ on $B_1(p)$ is at least $δ>0$, then the maximal displacement of $f$ on the rescaled unit ball $r^{-1}B_r(p)$ is at least $Φ(δ,n,v)>0$ for all $r\in(0,1)$. We call this s…
The thickness, NIR(K) of a knot or link K is defined to be the radius of the largest solid tube one can put around the curve without any self intersections, which is also known as the normal injectivity radius of K. For C^{1,1} curves K, NIR(K)=min{(1/2)DCSC(K),(1/(supkappa(K))))}, where kappa(K) is the generalized curvature, and the double critical self distance DCSD(K) is the shortest length of the segments perpendicular to K at both end points. The knots and links in ideal shapes (or tight knots or links) belong to the minima of ropelength = length/thickness within a fixed isotopy class. In…
Let M = M_{g,k} denote the space of properly (Alexandrov) embedded constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces of genus g with k (labeled) ends, modulo rigid motions, endowed with the real analytic structure described in [kmp]. Let $P = P_{g,k} = r_{g,k} \times R_+^k$ be the space of parabolic structures over Riemann surfaces of genus g with k (marked) punctures, the real analytic structure coming from the 3g-3+k local complex analytic coordinates on the Riemann moduli space r_{g,k}. Then the parabolic classifying map, Phi: M --> P, which assigns to a CMC surface its induced conformal structure and…
In this paper, we shall prove that space-like surfaces with bounded mean curvature functions in real analytic Lorentzian 3-manifolds can change their causality to time-like surfaces only if the mean curvature functions tend to zero. Moreover, we shall show the existence of such surfaces with non-vanishing mean curvature and investigate their properties.
We discuss some consequences of the existence of the holomorphic quadratic Hopf differential on a conformally immersed constant mean curvature topological disc with analytic boundary. In particular, we derive a formula for the mean curvature as a weighted average of the normal curvature of the boundary curve, and a condition for the surface to be totally umbilic in terms of the normal curvature.
On a Kahler manifold there is a clear connection between the complex geometry and underlying Riemannian geometry. In some ways, this can be used to characterize the Kahler condition. While such a link is not so obvious in the non-Kahler setting, one can seek to understand extensions of these characterizations to general Hermitian manifolds. This idea has been the subject of much study from the cohomological side, however, the focus here is to address such a question from the perspective of curvature relationships. In particular, on compact manifolds the Kähler condition is characterized by the…
We consider the relative canonical line bundle $K_{\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{T}}$ and a relatively ample line bundle $(L, e^{-ϕ})$ over the total space $ \mathcal{X}\to \mathcal{T}$ of fibration over the Teichmüller space by Riemann surfaces. We consider the case when the induced metric $\sqrt{-1}\partial\bar{\partial}ϕ|_{\mathcal{X}_y}$ on $\mathcal{X}_y$ has constant scalar curvature and we obtain the curvature asymptotics of $L^2$-metric and Quillen metric of the direct image bundle $E^k=π_*(L^k+K_{\mathcal{X}/\mathcal{T}})$. As a consequence we prove that the second variation of analytic torsio…
Given a sequence of complete(compact or noncompact) Kähler manifolds $M^n_i$ with bisectional curvature lower bound and noncollapsed volume, we prove that the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff limit is homeomorphic to a normal complex analytic space. The complex analytic structure is the natural "limit" of complex structure of $M_i$.
Applying a local Gauss-Bonnet formula for closed subanalytic sets to the complex analytic case, we obtain characterizations of the Euler obstruction of a complex analytic germ in terms of the Lipschitz-Killing curvatures and the Chern forms of its regular part. We also prove analogous results for the global Euler obstruction. As a corollary, we give a positive answer to a question of Fu on the Euler obstruction and the Gauss-Bonnet measure.
We exhibit a curious link between the Quadratic Orthogonal Bisectional Curvature, combinatorics, and distance geometry. The Weitzenböck curvature operator, acting on real (1,1)--forms, is realized as the Dirichlet energy of a finite graph, weighted by a matrix of the curvature. These results also illuminate the difference in the nature of the Quadratic Orthogonal Bisectional Curvature and the Real Bisectional Curvature.
We give a classification of non-removable isolated singularities for real analytic solutions of the prescribed mean curvature equation in Minkowski $3$-space.
A classical result due to Blaschke states that for every analytic self-map $f$ of the open unit disk of the complex plane there exists a Blaschke product $B$ such that the zero sets of $f$ and $B$ agree. In this paper we show that there is an analogue statement for critical sets, i.e. for every analytic self-map $f$ of the open unit disk there is even an indestructible Blaschke product $B$ such that the critical sets of $f$ and $B$ coincide. We further relate the problem of describing the critical sets of bounded analytic functions to the problem of characterizing the zero sets of some weighte…
The notion of Nonlocal Mean Curvature (NMC) appears recently in the mathematics literature. It is an extrinsic geometric quantity that is invariant under global reparameterization of a surface and provide a natural extension of the classical mean curvature. We describe some properties of the NMC and the quasilinear differential operators that are involved when it acts on graphs. We also survey recent results on surfaces having constant NMC and describe their intimate link with some problems arising in the study of overdetermined boundary value problems.
In this article we study complex properties of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in Kaehler ambient spaces, and how they depend on the ambient curvature. In particular, we prove that, in the negative curvature case, minimal Lagrangians do not admit fillings by holomorphic discs. The proof relies on a mix of holomorphic curve techniques and on certain convexity results.
We examine the space of surfaces in $\RR^{3}$ which are complete, properly embedded and have nonzero constant mean curvature. These surfaces are noncompact provided we exclude the case of the round sphere. We prove that the space $\Mk$ of all such surfaces with $k$ ends (where surfaces are identified if they differ by an isometry of $\RR^{3}$) is locally a real analytic variety. When the linearization of the quasilinear elliptic equation specifying mean curvature equal to one has no $L^2-$nullspace we prove that $\Mk$ is locally the quotient of a real analytic manifold of dimension $3k-6$ by a…
Let $N$ be a smooth $(n+l)$-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We show that if $V$ is an area-stationary union of three or more $C^{1,μ}$ $n$-dimensional submanifolds-with-boundary $M_k \subset N$ with a common boundary $Γ$, then $Γ$ is smooth and each $M_k$ is smooth up to $Γ$ (real-analytic in the case $N$ is real-analytic). This extends a previous result of the author for codimension $l = 1$. We additionally show that if $\{V_t\}_{t \in (-1,1)}$ is a Brakke flow such that each time-slice $V_t$ is a union of three or more $n$-dimensional submanifolds-with-boundary $M_{k,t} \subset N$ with a co…
Given a solution of the (backwards) Ricci flow one can construct a so called canonical soliton metric on space-time, introduced by E. Cabezas-Rivas and P. Topping. We observe that for a mean curvature flow within a (backwards) Ricci flow background, the space-time track of the mean curvature flow yields a canonical soliton of the coupled flow within the canonical Ricci soliton. We show that this provides a link between Hamilton's differential Harnack estimate for the mean curvature flow and Hamilton's differential Harnack estimate for the Ricci flow. Moreover the second fundamental form of our…
We construct examples of compact and one-ended constant mean curvature surfaces with large mean curvature in Riemannian manifolds with axial symmetry by gluing together small spheres positioned end-to-end along a geodesic. Such surfaces cannot exist in Euclidean space, but we show that the gradient of the ambient scalar curvature acts as a `friction term' which permits the usual analytic gluing construction to be carried out.
The curvature-dimension condition is a generalization of the Bochner inequality to weighted Riemannian manifolds and general metric measure spaces. It is now known to be equivalent to evolution variational inequalities for the heat semigroup, and quadratic Wasserstein distance contraction properties at different times. On the other hand, in a compact Riemannian manifold, it implies a same-time Wasserstein contraction property for this semigroup. In this work we generalize the latter result to metric measure spaces and more importantly prove the converse: contraction inequalities are equivalent…
We consider conformal deformations within a class of incomplete Riemannian metrics which generalize conic orbifold singularities by allowing both warping and any compact manifold (not just quotients of the sphere) to be the "link" of the singular set. Within this class of "conic metrics," we determine obstructions to the existence of conformal deformations to constant scalar curvature of any sign (positive, negative, or zero). For conic metrics with negative scalar curvature, we determine sufficient conditions for the existence of a conformal deformation to a conic metric with constant scalar …
There is a well known link between (maximal) polar representations and isotropy representations of symmetric spaces provided by Dadok. Moreover, the theory by Tits and Burns-Spatzier provides a link between irreducible symmetric spaces of non-compact type of rank at least three and irreducible topological spherical buildings of rank at least three. We discover and exploit a rich structure of a (connected) chamber system of finite (Coxeter) type M associated with any polar action of cohomogeneity at least two on any simply connected closed positively curved manifold. Although this chamber syste…
We extend the methods of Davis-Januszkiewicz-Lafont to provide a new obstruction to smooth Riemannian metric with non-positive sectional curvature. We construct examples of locally CAT(0) 4-manifolds $M$, whose universal covers satisfy isolated flats condition and contain 2-dimensional flats with the property that $\sqcup\ \partial^\infty F_i \hookrightarrow \partial^\infty \tilde M$ are non-trivial links that are not isotopic to any great circle link. Further, all the flats in $\tilde M$ are unknotted at infinity, and yet $M$ does not have a Riemannian smoothing.
