Let G be a locally compact group. We describe elements of KK^G (A,B) by equivariant homomorphisms, following Cuntz's treatment in the non-equivariant case. This yields another proof for the universal property of KK^G: It is the universal split exact stable homotopy functor.
To describe a Kasparov triple (E, phi, F) by an equivariant homomorphism, we have to arrange for the Fredholm operator F to be equivariant. This can be done if A is of the form K(L^2G) otimes A' and more generally if the group action on A is proper in the sense of Rieffel and Exel.
Let G be a finite group. We systematically exploit general homological methods in order to reduce the computation of G-equivariant KK-theory to topological equivariant K-theory. The key observation is that the functor assigning to a separable G-C*-algebra the collection of all its equivariant K-theory groups lifts naturally to a homological functor taking values in the abelian tensor category of Mackey modules over the classical representation Green functor for G. This fact yields a new universal coefficient and a new Kuenneth spectral sequence for the G-equivariant Kasparov category, whose co…
In this article, we generalize to the case of measured quantum groupoids on a finite basis some important results concerning equivariant Kasparov theory for actions of locally compact quantum groups [S. Baaj and G. Skandalis, 1989, 1993]. To every pair $(A,B)$ of C*-algebras continuously acted upon by a regular measured quantum groupoid on a finite basis $\cal G$, we associate a $\cal G$-equivariant Kasparov theory group ${\sf KK}_{\cal G}(A,B)$. The Kasparov product generalizes to this setting. By applying recent results concerning actions of regular measured quantum groupoids on a finite bas…
We study several duality isomorphisms between equivariant bivariant K-theory groups, generalising Kasparov's first and second Poincare duality isomorphisms. We use the first duality to define an equivariant generalisation of Lefschetz invariants of generalised self-maps. The second duality is related to the description of bivariant Kasparov theory for commutative C*-algebras by families of elliptic pseudodifferential operators. For many groupoids, both dualities apply to a universal proper G-space. This is a basic requirement for the dual Dirac method and allows us to describe the Baum-Connes …
Let $G=\mathrm{SL}(3,\mathbb{C})$. We construct an element of $G$-equivariant $K$-homology from the Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand complex for $G$. This furnishes an explicit splitting of the restriction map from the Kasparov representation ring $R(G)$ to the representation ring $R(K)$ of its maximal compact subgroup, and the splitting factors through the equivariant $K$-homology of the flag variety of $G$. In particular, we obtain a new model for the gamma element of $G$. The proof makes extensive use of earlier results of the author concerning harmonic analysis of longitudinal psuedodifferential …
In this paper we establish a direct connection between stable approximate unitary equivalence for $*$-homomorphisms and the topology of the KK-groups which avoids entirely C*-algebra extension theory and does not require nuclearity assumptions. To this purpose we show that a topology on the Kasparov groups can be defined in terms of approximate unitary equivalence for Cuntz pairs and that this topology coincides with both Pimsner's topology and the Brown-Salinas topology. We study the generalized Rørdam group $KL(A,B)=KK(A,B)/\bar{0}$, and prove that if a separable exact residually finite dime…
In this note we extend the classical result by G. G. Kasparov that the Kasparov groups $KK_1(A,B)$ can be identified with the extension groups $\mbox{Ext}(A,B)$ to the inverse semigroup equivariant setting. More precisely, we show that $KK_G^1(A,B) \cong \mbox{Ext}_G(A \otimes {\cal K}_G,B \otimes {\cal K}_G)$ for every countable, $E$-continuous inverse semigroup $G$. For locally compact second countable groups $G$ this was proved by K. Thomsen, and technically this note presents an adaption of his proof.
For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal comp…
Let $\Dh$ and $A$ be unital and separable $C^{*}$-algebras; let $\Dh$ be strongly self-absorbing. It is known that any two unital $^*$-homomorphisms from $\Dh$ to $A \otimes \Dh$ are approximately unitarily equivalent. We show that, if $\Dh$ is also $K_{1}$-injective, they are even asymptotically unitarily equivalent. This in particular implies that any unital endomorphism of $\Dh$ is asymptotically inner. Moreover, the space of automorphisms of $\Dh$ is compactly-contractible (in the point-norm topology) in the sense that for any compact Hausdorff space $X$, the set of homotopy classes $[X,\A…
Given a set of prime numbers S, we localise equivariant bivariant Kasparov theory at S and compare this localisation with Kasparov theory by an exact sequence. More precisely, we define the localisation at S to be KK^G(A,B) tensored with the ring of S-integers Z[S^-1]. We study the properties of the resulting variants of Kasparov theory.
We give a detailed and unified survey of equivariant $KK$-theory over locally compact, second countable, locally Hausdorff groupoids. We indicate precisely how the "classical" proofs relating to the Kasparov product can be used almost word-for-word in this setting, and give proofs for several results which do not currently appear in the literature.
Let a compact group G act on real or complex C*-algebras A and B, with A separable and B sigma-unital. We express the G-equivariant Kasparov groups KK_n(A,B) by algebraic K-groups of a certain additive category.
The stabilization theorem for $A$-Hilbert modules was established by G. G. Kasparov. The equivariant version, in which a locally compact group $H$ acts properly on a locally compact space $Y$, was proved by N. C. Phillips. This equivariant theorem involves the Hilbert $(H,C_{0}(Y))$-module $C_{0}(Y,L^{2}(H)^{\infty})$. It can naturally be interpreted in terms of a stabilization theorem for proper groupoids, and the paper establishes this theorem within the general proper groupoid context. The theorem has applications in equivariant KK-theory and groupoid index theory.
In this thesis, we investigate the proof of the Baum-Connes Conjecture with Coefficients for a-$T$-menable groups. We will mostly and essentially follow the argument employed by N. Higson and G. Kasparov in the paper [Nigel Higson and Gennadi Kasparov. $E$-theory and $KK$-theory for groups which act properly and isometrically on Hilbert space. Invent. Math., 144(1):23-74, 2001]. The crucial feature is as follows. One of the most important point of their proof is how to get the Dirac elements (the inverse of the Bott elements) in Equivariant $KK$-Theory. We prove that the group homomorphism use…
We interpret certain equivariant Kasparov groups as equivariant representable K-theory groups. We compute these groups via a classifying space and as K-theory groups of suitable sigma-C*-algebras. We also relate equivariant vector bundles to these sigma-C*-algebras and provide sufficient conditions for equivariant vector bundles to generate representable K-theory. Mostly we work in the generality of locally compact groupoids with Haar system.
We construct a groupoid equivariant Kasparov class for transversely oriented foliations in all codimensions. In codimension 1 we show that the Chern character of an associated semifinite spectral triple recovers the Connes-Moscovici cyclic cocycle for the Godbillon-Vey secondary characteristic class.
We provide sufficient conditions to factorise an equivariant spectral triple as a Kasparov product of unbounded classes constructed from the group action on the algebra and from the fixed point spectral triple. Our results are for the action of compact abelian Lie groups, and we demonstrate them with examples from manifolds and $θ$-deformations. In particular we show that equivariant Dirac-type spectral triples on the total space of a torus principal bundle always factorise. We also present an example that shows what goes wrong in the absence of our sufficient conditions (and how we get around…
Let T be the circle and A be a T-C*-algebra. Then the T-equivariant K-theory of A is a module over the representation ring of the circle. The latter is a Laurent polynomial ring. Using the support of the module as an invariant, and techniques of Atiyah, Bott and Segal, we deduce that there are examples of T-C*-algebras A not KK^T-equivalent to any commutative T-C*-algebra. This is in contrast to the non-equivariant situation, in which any C*-algebra in the boostrap category is KK-equivalent to a commutative one. Our examples arise from dynamics, and include Cuntz-Krieger algebras with their us…
We define twisted equivariant K-homology groups using geometric cycles. We compare them with approaches using Kasparov KK-Theory and (twisted) group C*-algebras.
Let $A$ be a graded C*-algebra. We characterize Kasparov's K-theory group $\hat{K}_0(A)$ in terms of graded *-homomorphisms by proving a general converse to the functional calculus theorem for self-adjoint regular operators on graded Hilbert modules. An application to the index theory of elliptic differential operators on smooth closed manifolds and asymptotic morphisms is discussed.
We describe Universal Coefficient Theorems for the equivariant Kasparov theory for C*-algebras with an action of the group of integers or over a unique path space, using KK-valued invariants. We compare the resulting classification up to equivariant KK-equivalence with the recent classification theorem involving a K-theoretic invariant together with an obstruction class in a certain Ext^2-group and with the classification by filtrated K-theory. This is based on a general theorem that computes these obstruction classes.
Let $T$ be a circle group, and $LT$ be its loop group. We hope to establish an index theory for infinite-dimensional manifolds which $LT$ acts on, including Hamiltonian $LT$-spaces, from the viewpoint of $KK$-theory. We have already constructed several objects in the previous paper \cite{T}, including a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ consisting of "$L^2$-sections of a Spinor bundle on the infinite-dimensional manifold", an "$LT$-equivariant Dirac operator $\mathcal{D}$" acting on $\mathcal{H}$, a "twisted crossed product of the function algebra by $LT$", and the "twisted group $C^*$-algebra of $L…
Let G be a discrete group and let X be a G-finite, proper G-CW-complex. We prove that Kasparov's equivariant K-homology groups KK^G(C_0(X),\C) are isomorphic to the geometric equivariant K-homology groups of X that are obtained by making the geometric K-homology theory of Baum and Douglas equivariant in the natural way. This reconciles the original and current formulations of the Baum-Connes conjecture for discrete groups.
Let X be a locally compact space with a continuous proper action of a locally compact group G. Assuming that X satisfies a certain kind of duality in equivariant bivariant Kasparov theory, we can enrich the classical construction of Lefschetz numbers to equivariant K-homology classes. We compute the Lefschetz invariants for self-maps of finite-dimensional simplicial complexes and of self-maps of smooth manifolds. The resulting invariants are independent of the extra structure used to compute them. Since smooth manifolds can be triangulated, we get two formulas for the same Lefschetz invariant …
We investigate the homological ideal $\mathfrak{J}_G^H$, the kernel of the restriction functors in compact Lie group equivariant Kasparov categories. Applying the relative homological algebra developed by Meyer and Nest, we relate the Atiyah-Segal completion theorem with the comparison of $\mathfrak{J}_G^H$ with the augmentation ideal of the representation ring. In relation to it, we study on the Atiyah-Segal completion theorem for groupoid equivariant $\mathrm{KK}$-theory, McClure's restriction map theorem, permanence property of the Baum-Connes conjecture under extensions of groups and a cla…
Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group with a maximal torus $T$. Let $A$, $B$ be $G$-$\mathrm{C}^\ast$-algebras. We define certain divided difference operators on Kasparov's $T$-equivariant $KK$-group $KK_T(A,B)$ and show that $KK_G(A,B)$ is a direct summand of $KK_T(A,B)$. More precisely, a $T$-equivariant $KK$-class is $G$-equivariant if and only if it is annihilated by an ideal of divided difference operators. This result is a generalization of work done by Atiyah, Harada, Landweber and Sjamaar.
A group equivariant $KK$-theory for rings will be defined and studied in analogy to Kasparov's $KK$-theory for $C^*$-algebras. It is a kind of linearization of the category of rings by allowing addition of homomorphisms, imposing also homotopy invariance, invertibility of matrix corner embeddings, and allowing morphisms which are the opposite split of split exact sequences. We demonstrate the potential of this theory by proving for example equivalence induced by Morita equivalence and a Green-Julg isomorphism in this framework.
We construct a symmetric spectrum representing the G-equivariant K-theory of C*-algebras for a compact group or a proper groupoid G. Our spectrum is functorial for equivariant *-homomorphisms. We use this to establish the additivity of the canonical traces for endomorphisms of strongly dualisable objects in the bootstrap class in equivariant KK, in analogy to previous results for traces in stable homotopy theory. As an application, we prove an equivariant analogue of the Lefschetz trace formula for Hodgkin Lie groups.
Let $T$ be the circle group and let $LT$ be its loop group. We formulate and investigate several topological aspects of the $LT$-equivariant index theory for proper $LT$-spaces, where proper $LT$-spaces are infinite-dimensional manifolds equipped with "proper cocompact" $LT$-actions. Concretely, we introduce "$\mathcal{R}KK$-theory for infinite-dimensional manifolds", and by using it, we formulate an infinite-dimensional version of the $KK$-theoretical Poincaré duality homomorphism, and an infinite-dimensional version of the $\mathcal{R}KK$-theory counterpart of the assembly map, for proper $L…
Let G be a countable discrete group and let M be a smooth proper cocompact G-manifold without boundary. The Euler operator defines via Kasparov theory an element, called the equivariant Euler class, in the equivariant K-homology of M. The universal equivariant Euler characteristic of M, which lives in a group U^G(M), counts the equivariant cells of M, taking the component structure of the various fixed point sets into account. We construct a natural homomorphism from U^G(M) to the equivariant KO-homology of M. The main result of this paper says that this map sends the universal equivariant Eul…
We construct a duality isomorphism in equivariant periodic cyclic homology analogous to Baaj-Skandalis duality in equivariant Kasparov theory. As a consequence we obtain general versions of the Green-Julg theorem and the dual Green-Julg theorem in periodic cyclic theory. Throughout we work within the framework of bornological quantum groups, thus in particular incorporating at the same time actions of arbitrary classical Lie groups as well as actions of compact or discrete quantum groups. An important ingredient in the construction of our duality isomorphism is the notion of a modular pair for…
We study a Going-Down (or restriction) principle for ample groupoids and its applications. The Going-Down principle for locally compact groups was developed by Chabert, Echterhoff and Oyono-Oyono and allows to study certain functors, that arise in the context of the topological K-theory of a locally compact group, in terms of their restrictions to compact subgroups. We extend this principle to the class of ample Hausdorff groupoids using Le Gall's groupoid equivariant version of Kasparov's bivariant KK-theory. Moreover, we provide an application to the Baum-Connes conjecture for ample groupoid…
Freed, Hopkins and Teleman constructed an isomorphism between twisted equivariant K-theory of compact Lie group $G$ and the "Verlinde ring" of the loop group of $G$. We call this isomorphism FHT isomorphism. However, it does not hold naturality with respect to group homomorphisms. We construct two "quasi functors" $t.e.K$ (a modification of twisted equivariant K-theory) and $RL$ (a modification of representation group of loop groups) so that FHT isomorphism is natural transformation between two "quasi functors" for tori, that is, we construct two "induced homomorphisms" of the "quasi functors"…
Let the discrete group G act properly and isometrically on the Riemannian manifold X. Let C_0(X, δ) be the section algebra of a smooth locally trivial G-equivariant bundle of elementary C*-algebras representing an element δof the Brauer group Br_G(X). Then C_0(X,δ^{-1}) x G is KK-theoretically Poincare dual to (C_0(X,δ)\otimes_{C_0(X)} C_τ(X)) xG, where δ^{-1} is the inverse of δin the Brauer group. We deduce this from a strengthening of Kasparov's duality theorem RKK^G(X; A,B) \cong KK^G(C_τ(X)\otimes A, B). As applications we also obtain a version of the above Poincare duality with X replace…
Extending ideas of twisted equivariant $K$-theory, we construct twisted versions of the representation rings for Lie superalgebras and Lie supergroups, built from projective $\Z_{2}$-graded representations with a given cocycle. We then investigate the pullback and pushforward maps on these representation rings (and their completions) associated to homomorphisms of Lie superalgebras and Lie supergroups. As an application, we consider the Lie supergroup $Π(T^{*}G)$, obtained by taking the cotangent bundle of a compact Lie group and reversing the parity of its fibers. An inclusion $H \hookrightar…
