The three-dimensional universal complex Clifford algebra is used to represent relativistic vectors in terms of paravectors. In analogy to the Hestenes spacetime approach spinors are introduced in an algebraic form. This removes the dependance on an explicit matrix representation of the algebra.
We prove that a smooth Riemannian manifold admitting an imaginary generalized Killing spinor whose Dirac current satisfies an additional algebraic constraint condition can be embedded as spacelike Cauchy hypersurface in a smooth Lorentzian manifold on which the given spinor extends to a null parallel spinor. This is in contrast to a corresponding Cauchy problem for real generalized Killing spinors into Riemannian manifolds. The construction is based on first order symmetric hyperbolic PDE-methods. In fact, the coupled evolution equations for metric and spinor as considered here extend and gene…
In the context of a canonical quantization of general relativity, one can deform the loop gravity phase space on a graph by replacing the T*SU(2) phase space attached to each edge by SL(2,C) seen as a phase space. This deformation is supposed to encode the presence of a non-zero cosmological constant. Here we show how to parametrize this phase space in terms of spinor variables, thus obtaining deformed spinor networks for loop gravity, with a deformed action of the gauge group SU(2) at the vertices. These are to be formally interpreted as the generalization of loop gravity twisted geometries t…
This is a short review of the algebraic properties of Clifford algebras and spinors. Their use in the description of fundamental physics (elementary particles) is also summarized. Lecture given at the ICCA7 conference, Toulouse (23/05/2005)
This paper is the second one of a series of three and it is the continuation of math-ph/0412074. We review some properties of the algebraic spinors in Cl(3,0) and Cl(0,3) and how Weyl, Pauli and Dirac spinors are constructed in Cl(3,0) (and Cl(0,3) in the case of Weyl spinors. A plane wave solution for the Dirac equation is obtained, and the Dirac equation is written in terms of Weyl spinors, and alternatively, in terms of Pauli spinors. Finally the covariant and contravariant undotted spinors in Cl(0,3), isomorphic to two copies of the quaternion algebra (H), are constructed. We prove that th…
New mathematical objects called Finslerian N-spinors are discussed. The Finslerian N-spinor algebra is developed. It is found that Finslerian N-spinors are associated with an N^2-dimensional flat Finslerian space. A generalization of the epimorphism SL(2,C) --> O^\uparrow_+(1,3) to a case of the group SL(N,C) is constructed. Particular examples of Finslerian N-spinors for N=2,3 are considered in detail.
The relationship between spinors and Clifford (or geometric) algebra has long been studied, but little consistency may be found between the various approaches. However, when spinors are defined to be elements of the even subalgebra of some real geometric algebra, the gap between algebraic, geometric, and physical methods is closed. Spinors are developed in any number of dimensions from a discussion of spin groups, followed by the specific cases of $\text{U}(1)$, $\SU(2)$, and $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{C})$ spinors. The physical observables in Schrödinger-Pauli theory and Dirac theory are found, and…
Pinor and spinor fields are sections of the subbundles whose fibers are the representation spaces of the Clifford algebra of the forms, equipped with the Graf product. In this context, pinors and spinors are here considered and the geometric generalized Fierz identities provide the necessary framework to derive and construct new spinor classes on the space of smooth sections of the exterior bundle, endowed with the Graf product, for prominent specific signatures, whose applications are discussed.
New mathematical objects called Finslerian N-spinors are discussed. The Finslerian N-spinor algebra is developed. It is found that Finslerian N-spinors are associated with an N^2-dimensional flat Finslerian space. A generalization of the epimorphism SL(2,C) --> SO^\uparrow(1,3) to a case of the group SL(N,C) is constructed.
The three first sections contain an updated, not-so-short account of a partly original approach to spinor geometry and field theories introduced by Jadczyk and myself; it is based on an intrisic treatment of 2-spinor geometry in which the needed background structures do not need to be assumed, but rather arise naturally from a unique geometric datum: a vector bundle with complex 2-dimensional fibres over a real 4-dimensional manifold. The two following sections deal with Dirac algebra and 4-spinor groups in terms of two spinors, showing various aspects of spinor geometry from a different persp…
In this work we explore the structure of Clifford algebras and the representations of the algebraic spinors in quantum information theory. Initially we present an general formulation through elements of left minimal ideals in tensor products of the Clifford algebra $Cl^{+}_{1,3}$. Posteriorly we perform some applications in quantum computation: qubits, entangled states, quantum gates, representations of the braid group, quantum teleportation, Majorana operators and supersymmetry. Finally, we discuss advantages related to standard Hilbert space formulation.
The SL(3,C)-covariant 9-dimensional equation for a free 3-spinor particle is transformed into the Dirac-like form (p_Aδ^A - M)Ψ=0. However, the corresponding δmatrices do not satisfy the Dirac algebra. It is shown that δ^A lead to a Finslerian generalization of the Duffin-Kemmer algebra. The Appendix contains an explicit realization of the δmatrices.
We investigate using Clifford algebra methods the theory of algebraic dotted and undotted spinor fields over a Lorentzian spacetime and their realizations as matrix spinor fields, which are the usual dotted and undotted two component spinor fields. We found that some ad hoc rules postulated for the covariant derivatives of Pauli sigma matrices and also for the Dirac gamma matrices in General Relativity cover important physical meaning, which is not apparent in the usual matrix presentation of the theory of two components dotted and undotted spinor fields. We also discuss some issues related to…
We begin showing that for even dimensional vector spaces $V$ all automorphisms of their Clifford algebras are inner. So all orthogonal transformations of $V$ are restrictions to $V$ of inner automorphisms of the algebra. Thus under orthogonal transformations $P$ and $T$ - space and time reversal - all algebra elements, including vectors $v$ and spinors $φ$, transform as $v \to x v x^{-1}$ and $φ\to x φx^{-1}$ for some algebra element $x$. We show that while under combined $PT$ spinor $φ\to x φx^{-1}$ remain in its spinor space, under $P$ or $T$ separately $φ$ goes to a 'different' spinor space…
In these lectures, we discuss some well-known facts about Clifford algebras: matrix representations, Cartan's periodicity of 8, double coverings of orthogonal groups by spin groups, Dirac equation in different formalisms, spinors in $n$ dimensions, etc. We also present our point of view on some problems. Namely, we discuss the generalization of the Pauli theorem, the basic ideas of the method of averaging in Clifford algebras, the notion of quaternion type of Clifford algebra elements, the classification of Lie subalgebras of specific type in Clifford algebra, etc.
Spinors are central to physics: all matter (fermions) is made of spinors, and all forces arise from symmetries of spinors. It is common to consider the geometric (Clifford) algebra as the fundamental edifice from which spinors emerge. This paper advocates the alternative view that spinors are more fundamental than the geometric algebra. The algebra consisting of linear combinations of scalars, column spinors, row spinors, multivectors, and their various products, can be termed the supergeometric algebra. The inner product of a row spinor with a column spinor yields a scalar, while the outer pr…
When utilizing a cluster decomposible relativistic scattering formalism, it is most convenient that the covariant field equations take on a linear form with respect to the energy and momentum dispersion on the fields in the manner given by the Dirac form for spin ${1 \over 2}$ systems. The general spinor formulation for arbitrary spins given in a previous paper is extended to include momentum operators. Unitary quantum mechanical representations are developed for these operators, and physical interpretations are suggested.
We show that complex representations of Clifford algebra can always be reduced either to a real or to a quaternionic algebra depending on signature of complex space thus showing that complex spinors are unavoidably either real Majorana spinors or quaternionic spinors. We use this result to support (1,3) signature for Minkowski space.
In this paper we give a thoughtful exposition of the hyperbolic Clifford algebra of multivecfors which is naturally associated with a hyperbolic space, whose elements are called vecfors. Geometrical interpretation of vecfors and multivecfors are given. Poincare automorphism (Hodge dual operator) is introduced and several useful formulas derived. The role of a particular ideal in the hyperbolic Clifford algebra whose elements are representatives of spinors and resume the algebraic properties of Witten superfields is discussed.
We give an algebraic formulation based on Clifford algebras and algebraic spinors for quantum information. In this context, logic gates and concepts such as chirality, charge conjugation, parity and time reversal are introduced and explored in connection with states of qubits. Supersymmetry and M-superalgebra are also analysed with our formalism. Specifically we use extensively the algebras $Cl_{3,0}$ and $Cl_{1,3}$ as well as tensor products of Clifford algebras.
A set of two-parameter bi-orthogonal eigen-spinors has been constructed from a deformed pseudo- Hermitian extension of Pauli Hamiltonian and its Hermitian conjugate. The Hamiltonians thus obtained are iso-spectral to the original Pauli Hamiltonian. A pair of spin-projection operators has been constructed as an essential ingredient of a possible bi-orthogonal quantum mechanics. An analogue of Kramers theorem in pseudo-Hermitian setting has also been inferred in a conjectural sense. The properties of time reversal and bi-orthogonality have been elaborated in the frame work of Clifford algebra Cl…
We reexamine the minimal coupling procedure in the Hestenes' geometric algebra formulation of the Dirac equation, where spinors are identified with the even elements of the real Clifford algebra of spacetime. This point of view, as we argue, leads naturally to a non-Abelian generalisation of the electromagnetic gauge potential.
We propose a new approach to the spinor-spinor R-matrix with orthogonal and symplectic symmetry. Based on this approach and the fusion method we relate the spinor-vector and vector-vector monodromy matrices for quantum spin chains. We consider the explicit spinor R matrices of low rank orthogonal algebras and the corresponding RTT algebras. Coincidences with fundamental R matrices allow to relate the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz for spinor and vector monodromy matrices.
This paper is the third of a series of three, and it is the continuation of math-ph/0412074 and math-ph/0412075. After reviewing the conformal spacetime structure, conformal maps are described in Minkowski spacetime as the twisted adjoint representation of the group Spin_+(2,4), acting on paravectors. Twistors are then presented via the paravector model of Clifford algebras and related to conformal maps in the Clifford algebra over the lorentzian R{4,1}$ spacetime. We construct twistors in Minkowski spacetime as algebraic spinors associated with the Dirac-Clifford algebra Cl(1,3)(C) using one …
We give a streamlined account of $2$-spinors, up to and including the Dirac equation, using little more than the resources of linear algebra. We prove that the Dirac bundle is isomorphic to the associated bundles $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C}) \times_{\mathrm{SU}_2} S$ and $\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{C}) \times_{\mathrm{SU}_2} \bar{S}$. A solution of the Dirac equation determines a pair of conjugate $2$-spinor fields over the mass shell $X_m$.
Part I: The geometric algebra of space is derived by extending the real number system to include three mutually anticommuting square roots of plus one. The resulting geometric algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of complex 2x2 matrices, also known as the Pauli algebra. The so-called spinor algebra of C(2), the language of the quantum mechanics, is formulated in terms of the idempotents and nilpotents of the geometric algebra of space, including its beautiful representation on the Riemann sphere, and a new proof of the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. In "Part II: Spacetime Algebra of Dirac S…
In "Part I: Vector Analysis of Spinors", the author studied the geometry of two component spinors as points on the Riemann sphere in the geometric algebra of three dimensional Euclidean space. Here, these ideas are generalized to apply to four component Dirac spinors on the complex Riemann sphere in the complexified geometric algebra of spacetime, which includes Lorentz transformations. The development of generalized Pauli matrices eliminate the need for the traditional Dirac gamma matrices. We give the discrete probability distribution of measuring a spin 1/2 particle in an arbitrary spin sta…
I apply the algebraic classification of self-adjoint endomorphisms of ${\bf R}^{2,2}$ provided by their Jordan canonical form to the Ricci curvature tensor of four-dimensional neutral manifolds and relate this classification to an algebraic classification of the Ricci curvature spinor. These results parallel similar results well known in four-dimensional Lorentzian geometry. The classification is summarized in Table 2 at the end of the paper.
Real Clifford algebras for arbitrary number of space and time dimensions as well as their representations in terms of spinors are reviewed and discussed. The Clifford algebras are classified in terms of isomorphic matrix algebras of real, complex or quaternionic type. Spinors are defined as elements of minimal or quasi-minimal left ideals within the Clifford algebra and as representations of the pin and spin groups. Two types of Dirac adjoint spinors are introduced carefully. The relation between mathematical structures and applications to describe relativistic fermions is emphasized throughou…
We consider geometric and supergravity Killing spinors and the spinor bilinears constructed out of them. The spinor bilinears of geometric Killing spinors correspond to the antisymmetric generalizations of Killing vector fields which are called Killing-Yano forms. They constitute a Lie superalgebra structure in constant curvature spacetimes. We show that the Dirac currents of geometric Killing spinors satisfy a Lie algebra structure up to a condition on 2-form spinor bilinears. We propose that the spinor bilinears of supergravity Killing spinors give way to different generalizations of Killing…
In this paper we exploit the ideas and formalisms of twistor theory, to show how, on Minkowski space, given a null solution of the wave equation, there are precisely two null directions in $\ker df$, at least one of which is a shear-free ray congruence.
In the first article of this work [... I: The transposition map] we showed that real Clifford algebras CL(V,Q) posses a unique transposition anti-involution \tp. There it was shown that the map reduces to reversion (resp. conjugation) for any Euclidean (resp. anti-Euclidean) signature. When applied to a general element of the algebra, it results in transposition of the associated matrix of that element in the left regular representation of the algebra. In this paper we show that, depending on the value of (p-q) mod 8, where \ve=(p,q) is the signature of Q, the anti-involution gives rise to tra…
Let $(V,g)$ be a $2n$-dimensional hyperbolic space and $C(V,g)$ its Clifford algebra. $C(V,g)$ has a $\mathbb Z$-grading, $C^k $, and an algebra isomorphism $C(V,g)\cong End(S)$, $S$ the space of spinors. É. Cartan defined operators $L_k: End(S) \to C^k$ which are involved in the definition of pure spinors. We shall give a more refined study of the operator $L_2$, in fact, obtain explicit formulae for it in terms of spinor inner products and combinatorics, as well as the matrix of it in a basis of pure spinors. Using this information we give a construction of the exceptional Lie algebras $\mat…
Classification of quantum spinor fields according to quantum bilinear covariants is introduced in a context of quantum Clifford algebras on Minkowski spacetime. Once the bilinear covariants are expressed in terms of algebraic spinor fields, the duality between spinor and quantum spinor fields is thus discussed. Hence, by endowing the underlying spacetime with an arbitrary bilinear form with a antisymmetric part in addition to a symmetric spacetime metric, quantum algebraic spinor fields and deformed bilinear covariants can be constructed. They are therefore compared to the classical (non quant…
The main objective of this paper is to clarify the ontology of Dirac-Hestenes spinor fields (DHSF) and its relationship with sum of even multivector fields, on a general Riemann-Cartan spacetime admitting a spin structure and to give a mathematically rigorous derivation of the so called Dirac-Hestenes equation (DHE) when spacetime is a Lorentzian. To this aim we introduce the Clifford bundle of multivector fields (Cl(M,g)) and the left (Cl_{Spin_{1,3}^{e}}^{l}(M)) and right (Cl_{Spin_{1,3}^{e}}^{r}(M)) spin-Clifford bundles on the spin manifold (M,g) The relation between left ideal algebraic s…
We discuss $\mathcal{N}=1$ Klein and Klein-Conformal superspaces in $D=(2,2)$ space-time dimensions, realizing them in terms of their functor of points over the split composition algebra $\mathbb{C}_{s}$. We exploit the observation that certain split form of orthogonal groups can be realized in terms of matrix groups over split composition algebras; this leads to a natural interpretation of the the sections of the spinor bundle in the critical split dimensions $D=4$, $6$ and $10$ as $\mathbb{C}_{s}^{2}$, $\mathbb{H}_{s}^{2}$ and $\mathbb{O}_{s}^{2}$, respectively. Within this approach, we also…
Expository notes on Clifford algebras and spinors with a detailed discussion of Majorana, Weyl, and Dirac spinors. The paper is meant as a review of background material, needed, in particular, in now fashionable theoretical speculations on neutrino masses. It has a more mathematical flavour than the over twenty-seven-year-old "Introduction to Majorana masses" by P.D. Mannheim and includes historical notes and biographical data on past participants in the story.
In this paper we discuss a simplified approach to the symplectic Clifford algebra, the symplectic Clifford group and the symplectic spinor by first extending the Heisenberg algebra. We do this by adding a new idempotent element to the algebra. It turns out that this element is the projection operator onto the Dirac standard ket. When this algebra is transformed into the Fock algebra, the corresponding idempotent is the projector onto the vacuum. These additional elements give a very simple way to write down expressions for symplectic spinors as elements of the symplectic Clifford algebra. When…
Because of the isomorphism ${C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{1,3}(\Bbb{C})\cong{C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{2,3}(\Bbb{R})$, it is possible to complexify the spacetime Clifford algebra ${C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{1,3}(\Bbb{R})$ by adding one additional timelike dimension to the Minkowski spacetime. In a recent work we showed how this treatment provide a particular interpretation of Dirac particles and antiparticles in terms of the new temporal dimension. In this article we thoroughly study the structure of the real Clifford algebra ${C \kern -0.1em \ell}_{2,3}(\Bbb{R})$ paying special attention to the isomorphism …
In the study of the Type II superstring, it is useful to consider the BRST complex associated to the sum of two pure spinors. The cohomology of this complex is an infinite-dimensional vector space. It is also a finite-dimensional algebra over the algebra of functions of a single pure spinor. In this paper we study the multiplicative structure.
A signature epsilon=(p,q) dependent transposition anti-involution T of real Clifford algebras Cl_{p,q} for non-degenerate quadratic forms was introduced in [arXiv.1005.3554v1]. In [arXiv.1005.3558v1] we showed that, depending on the value of (p-q) mod 8, the map T gives rise to transposition, complex Hermitian, or quaternionic Hermitian conjugation of representation matrices in spinor representation. The resulting scalar product is in general different from the two known standard scalar products [Lounesto, Clifford algebras and Spinors 2001]. We provide a full signature (p,q) dependent classif…
A classical result of Gelfand shows that the topologized spectrum of characters on commutative Banach algebra is homeomorphic to the underlying space. This fact is used in solving the Calderón problem in dimension 2 via the boundary control (BC) method. To apply the BC method in dimension 3, the algebra of complex holomorphic functions can be replaced by the space of harmonic quaternion fields, but this space is no longer an algebra and is not commutative. Nonetheless, it has been shown that a suitable notion of a spectrum exists and in the case when the underlying space is convex, the spectru…
We show that the BRST cohomology of the massless sector of the Type IIB superstring on AdS5xS5 can be described as the relative cohomology of an infinite-dimensional Lie superalgebra. We explain how the vertex operators of ghost number 1, which correspond to conserved currents, are described in this language. We also give some algebraic description of the ghost number 2 vertices, which appears to be new. We use this algebraic description to clarify the structure of the zero mode sector of the ghost number two states in flat space, and initiate the study of the vertices of the higher ghost numb…
We show that Clifford algebras are closely related to the study of isoclinic subspaces of spinor spaces and, consequently, to the Hurwitz-Radon matrix problem. Isocliny angles are introduced to parametrize gamma matrices, i.e., matrix representations of the generators of finite-dimensional Clifford algebras C(m,n). Restricting the consideration to the Clifford algebra C(4,0), this parametrization is then applied to the study of Dirac traces occurring in Euclidean lattice quantum field theory within the hopping parameter expansion for Wilson fermions.
By method of moving frame, the relativistic integrable nonlinear model for real, Majorana type spinor fields in 1+1 dimensions is introduced and gauge equivalence of this model with Papanicolau spin model on one sheet hyperboloid is established. In terms of the so called double numbers, the model is represented also as hyperbolic complex relativistic model, in the form similar to the massive Thirring model. By using Hirota bilinear method, one dissipaton solution of this model is constructed. We calculated first integrals of motion for this dissipaton and show that it represents relativistic p…
Spinor representations of surfaces immersed into 4-dimensional pseudo-riemannian manifolds are defined in terms of minimal left ideals and tensor decompositions of Clifford algebras. The classification of spinor fields and Dirac operators on the immersed surfaces is given. The Dirac-Hestenes spinor field on surfaces immersed into Lorentzian manifolds and on surfaces conformally immersed into Minkowski spacetime is defined.
$CPT$ groups for spinor fields in de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spaces are defined in the framework of automorphism groups of Clifford algebras. It is shown that de Sitter spaces with mutually opposite signatures correspond to Clifford algebras with different algebraic structure that induces an essential difference of $CPT$ groups associated with these spaces. $CPT$ groups for charged particles are considered with respect to phase factors on the various spinor spaces related with real subalgebras of the simple Clifford algebra over the complex field (Dirac algebra). It is shown that $CPT$ group…
We investigate regular hyperbolic subalgebras of hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras via their Weyl groups. We classify all subgroups relations between Weyl groups of hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras, and show that for every pair of a group and subgroup their exists at least one corresponding pair of algebra and subalgebra. We also present a finite algorithm classifying all regular hyperbolic subalgebras of hyperbolic Kac-Moody algebras.
