We discuss a classical nonlinear oscillator, which is proved to be a superintegrable system for which the bounded motions are quasiperiodic oscillations and the unbounded (scattering) motions are represented by hyperbolic functions. This oscillator can be seen as a position-dependent mass system and we show a natural quantization prescription admitting a factorization with shape invariance for the $n=1$ case, and then the energy spectrum is found. Other isochronous systems which can also be considered as a generalization of the harmonic oscillator and admit a nonstandard Lagrangian description are also discussed.
We analyze a simple textbook approach to nonlinear oscillators proposed recently, disclose its errors, limitations and misconceptions and complete the calculations that the authors failed to perform.
In this paper, we present an explicit form in terms of end-point data for the classical action $S_{2n}$ evaluated on extremals satisfying the Hamilton-Jacobi equation for each member of a hierarchy of classical non-relativistic oscillators characterized by even power potentials (i.e., attractive potentials $V_{2n}(y_{2n})={\frac{1}{2n}}k_{2n}y_{2n}^{2n}(t)|_{n{\geq}1}$). The nonlinear quartic oscillator corresponds to $n=2$ while the harmonic oscillator corresponds to $n=1$.
In this paper we discuss a recent application of a variational homotopy perturbation method to rather simple nonlinear oscillators . We show that the main equations are inconsistent and for that reason the results may be of scarce utility.
We investigate an influence of dissipation on autoresonant threshold for a system of nonlinear oscillators. Exact asymptotic formulas and numerical simulations are presented. These results correspond to an initial interval of autoresonance.
A general non-local point transformation for position-dependent mass Lagrangians and their mapping into a "constant unit-mass" Lagrangians in the generalized coordinates is introduced. The conditions on the invariance of the related Euler-Lagrange equations are reported. The harmonic oscillator linearization of the PDM Euler-Lagrange equations is discussed through some illustrative examples including harmonic oscillators, shifted harmonic oscillators, a quadratic nonlinear oscillator, and a Morse-type oscillator. The Mathews-Lakshmanan nonlinear oscillators are reproduced and some "shifted" Ma…
We construct two-parameters family of nonlinear coherent states by replacing the factorial in coefficients $z^n/\sqrt{n!}$ of the canonical coherent states by a specific generalized factorial $x_n^{γ,σ}!$ where parameters $γ$ and $σ$ satisfy some conditions for which the normalization condition and the resolution of identity are verified. The obtained family is a generalization of the Barut-Girardello coherent states and those of the philophase states. In the particular case of parameters $γ$ and $σ$, we attache these states to the pseudo-harmonic oscillator depending on two parameters $α,β> 0…
Constants of motion, Lagrangians and Hamiltonians admitted by a family of relevant nonlinear oscillators are derived using a geometric formalism. The theory of the Jacobi last multiplier allows us to find Lagrangian descriptions and constants of the motion. An application of the jet bundle formulation of symmetries of differential equations is presented in the second part of the paper. After a short review of the general formalism, the particular case of non-local symmetries is studied in detail by making use of an extended formalism. The theory is related to some results previously obtained b…
We examine some nontrivial consequences that emerge from interpreting a position-dependent mass (PDM) driven Duffing oscillator in the presence of a quartic potential. The propagation dynamics is studied numerically and sensi- tivity to the PDM-index is noted. Remarkable transitions from a limit cycle to chaos through period doubling and from a chaotic to a regular motion through intermediate periodic and chaotic routes are demonstrated.
The coherent state of a nonlinear oscillator having a nonlinear spectrum is constructed using Gazeau Klauder formalism. The weighting distribution and the Mandel parameter are studied. Details of the revival structure arising from different time scales underlying the quadratic energy spectrum are investigated by the phase analysis of the autocorrelation function.
A system of equations consisting of an infinite string coupled to a nonlinear oscillator is considered. The Cauchy problem for the system with the periodic initial data is studied. The main goal is to prove the convergence of the solutions as $t\to\infty$ to a time periodic solution.
In this paper, we present a method to identify integrable complex nonlinear oscillator systems and construct their solutions. For this purpose, we introduce two types of nonlocal transformations which relate specific classes of nonlinear complex ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with complex linear ODEs, thereby proving the integrability of the former. We also show how to construct the solutions using the two types of nonlocal transformations with several physically interesting cases as examples.
We construct a rational extension of a recently studied nonlinear quantum oscillator model. Our extended model is shown to retain exact solvability, admitting a discrete spectrum and corresponding closed-form solutions that are expressed through Jacobi-type $X_m$ exceptional orthogonal polynomials.
We examine various generalizations, e.g. exactly solvable, quasi-exactly solvable and non-Hermitian variants, of a quantum nonlinear oscillator. For all these cases, the same mass function has been used and it has also been shown that the new exactly solvable potentials possess shape invariance symmetry. The solutions are obtained in terms of classical orthogonal polynomials.
The classical quantization of a Lienard-type nonlinear oscillator is achieved by a quantization scheme (M.C. Nucci. Theor. Math. Phys., 168:997--1004, 2011) that preserves the Noether point symmetries of the underlying Lagrangian in order to construct the Schrödinger equation. This method straightforwardly yields the correct Schrödinger equation in the momentum space (V. Chithiika Ruby, M. Senthilvelan, and M. Lakshmanan. J. Phys. A: Math. Gen., 45:382002, 2012), and sheds light into the apparently remarkable connection with the linear harmonic oscillator.
The classical nonlinear oscillator, proposed by Mathews and Lakshmanan in 1974 and including a position-dependent mass in the kinetic energy term, is generalized in two different ways by adding an extra term to the potential. The solutions of the Euler-Lagrange equation are shown to exhibit richer behaviour patterns than those of the original nonlinear oscillator.
Far as we know there are not exact solutions to the equation of motion for a relativistic harmonic oscillator. In this paper, the relativistic harmonic oscillator equation which is a nonlinear ordinary differential equation is studied by means of a combined use of the Adomian Decomposition Method and the Laplace Transform (LADM). The results that we have obtained, a series of powers of functions, have never been reported and show a very good match when compared with other approximate solutions, obtained by different methods. The method here proposed works with high degree of accuracy and becau…
We present a supersymmetric analysis for the d-dimensional Schroedinger equation with the generalized isotonic nonlinear-oscillator potential V(r)={B^2}/{r^{2}}+ω^{2} r^{2}+2g{(r^{2}-a^{2})}/{(r^{2}+a^{2})^{2}}, B\geq 0. We show that the eigenequation for this potential is exactly solvable provided g=2 and (ωa^2)^2 = B^2 +(\ell +(d-2)/2)^2. Under these conditions, we obtain explicit formulae for all the energies and normalized bound-state wavefunctions.
Exact analytical, closed-form solutions, expressed in terms of special functions, are presented for the case of a three-dimensional nonlinear quantum oscillator with a position dependent mass. This system is the generalization of the corresponding one-dimensional system, which has been the focus of recent attention. In contrast to other approaches, we are able to obtain solutions in terms of special functions, without a reliance upon a Rodrigues-type of formula. The wave functions of the quantum oscillator have the familiar spherical harmonic solutions for the angular part. For the s-states of…
We present a method devised by Jacobi to derive Lagrangians of any second-order differential equation: it consists in finding a Jacobi Last Multiplier. We illustrate the easiness and the power of Jacobi's method by applying it to several equations and also a class of equations studied by Musielak with his own method [Musielak ZE, Standard and non-standard Lagrangians for dissipative dynamical systems with variable coefficients. J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 41 (2008) 055205 (17pp)], and in particular to a Liènard type nonlinear oscillator, and a second-order Riccati equation.
We show that a pair of coupled nonlinear oscillators, of which one oscillator has positive and the other one negative damping of equal rate, can form a Hamiltonian system. Small-amplitude oscillations in this system are governed by a $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric nonlinear Schrödinger dimer with linear and cubic coupling. The dimer also represents a Hamiltonian system and is found to be exactly solvable in elementary functions. We show that the nonlinearity softens the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry breaking transition in the nonlinearly-coupled dimer: stable periodic and quasiperiodic states with large e…
Nonlinear supercoherent states, which are eigenstates of nonlinear deformations of the Kornbluth-Zypman annihilation operator for the supersymmetric harmonic oscillator, will be studied. They turn out to be expressed in terms of nonlinear coherent states, associated to the corresponding deformations of the standard annihilation operator. We will discuss as well the Heisenberg uncertainty relation for a special particular case, in order to compare our results with those obtained for the Kornbluth-Zypman linear supercoherent states. As the supersymmetric harmonic oscillator executes an evolution…
We consider a resonantly perturbed system of coupled nonlinear oscillators with small dissipation and outer periodic perturbation. We show that for the large time $t \sim ε^{-2}$ one component of the system is described in the main by the inhomogeneous Mathieu equation while the other component represents pulsation of large amplitude. A Hamiltonian system is obtained which describes the behaviour of the envelope in the main. The analytic results agree to numerical simulations.
We report a novel mechanism for the formation of chimera states, a peculiar spatiotemporal pattern with coexisting synchronized and incoherent domains found in ensembles of identical oscillators. Considering Stuart-Landau oscillators we demonstrate that a nonlinear global coupling can induce this symmetry breaking. We find chimera states also in a spatially extended system, a modified complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. This theoretical prediction is validated with an oscillatory electrochemical system, the electrooxidation of silicon, where the spontaneous formation of chimeras is observed with…
Small-amplitude weakly coupled oscillators of the Klein-Gordon lattices are approximated by equations of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger type. We show how to justify this approximation by two methods, which have been very popular in the recent literature. The first method relies on a priori energy estimates and multi-scale decompositions. The second method is based on a resonant normal form theorem. We show that although the two methods are different in the implementation, they produce equivalent results as the end product. We also discuss applications of the discrete nonlinear Schrodinger …
The phase diffusion in a self-sustained oscillator, which produces oscillator's spectral linewidth, is inherently governed by a nonlinear Langevin equation. Over past 40 years, the equation has been treated with linear approximation, rendering the nonlinearity's effects unknown. Here we solve the nonlinear Langevin equation using the perturbation method borrowed from quantum mechanics, and reveal the physics of the nonlinearity: slower phase diffusion (linewidth narrowing) and a surprising oscillation frequency shift that formally corresponds to the Lamb shift in quantum electrodynamics.
