The Floquet operator, defined as the time-evolution operator over one period, plays a central role in the work presented in this thesis on periodically perturbed quantum systems. Knowledge of the spectral nature of the Floquet operator gives us information on the dynamics of such systems. The work presented here on the spectrum of the Floquet operator gives further insight into the nature of chaos in quantum mechanics. After discussing the links between the spectrum, dynamics and chaos and pointing out an ambiguity in the physics literature, I present a number of new mathematical results on the existence of different types of spectra of the Floquet operator. I characterise the conditions for which the spectrum remains pure point and then, on relaxing these conditions, show the emergence of a continuous spectral component. The nature of the continuous spectrum is further analysed, and shown to be singularly continuous. Thus, the dynamics of these systems are a candidate for classification as chaotic. A conjecture on the emergence of a continuous spectral component is linked to a long standing number-theoretic conjecture on the estimation of finite exponential sums.
In this paper, we study 2d Floquet conformal field theory, where the external periodic driving is described by iterated logistic or tent maps. These maps are known to be typical examples of dynamical systems exhibiting the order-chaos transition, and we show that, as a result of such driving, the entanglement entropy scaling develops fractal features when the corresponding dynamical system approaches the chaotic regime. For the driving set by the logistic map, fractal contribution to the scaling dominates, making entanglement entropy highly oscillating function of the subsystem size.

By a straightforward generalisation, we extend the work of Combescure from rank-1 to rank-N perturbations. The requirement for the Floquet operator to be pure point is established and compared to that in Combescure. The result matches that in McCaw. The method here is an alternative to that work. We show that if the condition for the Floquet operator to be pure point is relaxed, then in the case of the delta-kicked Harmonic oscillator, a singularly continuous component of the Floquet operator spectrum exists. We also provide an in depth discussion of the conjecture presented in Combescure of t…
We review the construction of the supersymmetric sigma model for unitary maps, using the color- flavor transformation. We then illustrate applications by three case studies in quantum chaos. In two of these cases, general Floquet maps and quantum graphs, we show that universal spectral fluctuations arise provided the pertinent classical dynamics are fully chaotic (ergodic and with decay rates sufficiently gapped away from zero). In the third case, the kicked rotor, we show how the existence of arbitrarily long-lived modes of excitation (diffusion) precludes universal fluctuations and entails q…

We prove a localization theorem for continuous ergodic Schrödinger operators $ H_ω:= H_0 + V_ω$, where the random potential $ V_ω$ is a nonnegative Anderson-type perturbation of the periodic operator $ H_0$. We consider a lower spectral band edge of $ σ(H_0) $, say $ E= 0 $, at a gap which is preserved by the perturbation $ V_ω$. Assuming that all Floquet eigenvalues of $ H_0$, which reach the spectral edge 0 as a minimum, have there a positive definite Hessian, we conclude that there exists an interval $ I $ containing 0 such that $ H_ω$ has only pure point spectrum in $ I $ for almost all $ …
We consider the nonlinear equations obtained from soliton equations by adding self-consistent sources. We demonstrate by using as an example the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation that such equations on periodic functions are not isospectral. They deform the spectral curve but preserve the multipliers of the Floquet functions. The latter property implies that the conservation laws, for soliton equations, which may be described in terms of the Floquet multipliers give rise to conservation laws for the corresponding equations with self-consistent sources. Such a property was first observed by us fo…
In this paper we provide new asymptotic estimates of the Floquet exponents of Schrödinger operators on the circle. By the same techniques, known asymptotic estimates of various others spectral quantities are improved.
We discuss several classes of integrable Floquet systems, i.e. systems which do not exhibit chaotic behavior even under a time dependent perturbation. The first class is associated with finite-dimensional Lie groups and infinite-dimensional generalization thereof. The second class is related to the row transfer matrices of the 2D statistical mechanics models. The third class of models, called here "boost models", is constructed as a periodic interchange of two Hamiltonians - one is the integrable lattice model Hamiltonian, while the second is the boost operator. The latter for known cases coin…
