84 pages, 3 figures This is a revised (and quite improved) version of our previous paper of a similar title. The changes include a proof of the absolute continuity of the IDS for almost every angle of the underlying shift
We develop some non-perturbative methods for studying the IDS in almost Mathieu and related models. Assuming positive Lyapunov exponents, and assuming that the potential function is a trigonometric polynomial of degree k, we show that the Holder exponent of the IDS is almost 1/2k. We also show that this is stable under small perturbations of the potential (e.g., potentials which are close to that of almost Mathieu again give rise to almost 1/2 Holder continuous IDS). Moreover, off a set of Hausdorff dimension zero the IDS is Lipschitz. We further deduce from these properties that the IDS is absolutely continuous for almost every shift angle. The proof is based on large deviation theorems for the entries of the transfer matrices in combination with the avalanche principle for non-unimodular matrices. These two are combined to yield a multiscale approach to counting zeros of determinants which fall into small disks. In addition, we develop a new mechanism of eliminating resonant phases, and use it to obtain lower bounds on the gap between Dirichlet eigenvalues. The latter also uses the exponential localization of the eigenfunctions.
Let $Ω$ be some domain in the hyperbolic space $\Hn$ (with $n\ge 2$) and $S_1$ the geodesic ball that has the same first Dirichlet eigenvalue as $Ω$. We prove the Payne-Pólya-Weinberger conjecture for $\Hn$, i.e., that the second Dirichlet eigenvalue on $Ω$ is smaller or equal than the second Dirichlet eigenvalue on $S_1$. We also prove that the ratio of the first two eigenvalues on geodesic balls is a decreasing function of the radius.
We consider the inverse spectral problem for periodic Jacobi matrices in terms of the vertical slits on the quasi-momentum domain plus the Dirichlet eigenvalues, i.e., the Marchenko-Ostrovsky mapping. Moreover, we show that the gradients of the Dirichlet eigenvalues and of the so-called norming constants are linear independent.
We consider the Laplace operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a planar domain and study the effect that performing a scaling in one direction has on the spectrum. We derive the asymptotic expansion for the eigenvalues and corresponding eigenfunctions as a function of the scaling parameter around zero. This method allows us, for instance, to obtain an approximation for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue for a large class of planar domains, under very mild assumptions.
We study the high-frequency behavior of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map for an arbitrary compact Riemannian manifold with a non-empty smooth boundary. We show that far from the real axis it can be approximated by a simpler operator. We use this fact to get new results concerning the location of the transmission eigenvalues on the complex plane. In some cases we obtain optimal transmission eigenvalue-free regions.
Given the Laplacian on a planar, convex domain with piecewise linear boundary subject to mixed Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions, we provide a sufficient condition for its lowest eigenvalue to dominate the lowest eigenvalue of the Laplacian with the complementary boundary conditions (i.e. with Dirichlet replaced by Neumann and vice versa). The application of this result to triangles gives an affirmative partial answer to a recent conjecture. Moreover, we prove a further observation of similar flavor for right triangles.
Given a Schrödinger operator with a real-valued potential on a bounded, convex domain or a bounded interval we prove inequalities between the eigenvalues corresponding to Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions, respectively. The obtained inequalities depend partially on monotonicity and convexity properties of the potential. The results are counterparts of classical inequalities for the Laplacian but display some distinction between the one-dimensional case and higher dimensions.
Inequalities between the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues of the Laplacian have received much attention in the literature, but open problems abound. Here, we study the number of Neumann eigenvalues no greater than the first Dirichlet eigenvalue. Based on a combination of analytical and numerical results, we conjecture that this number is controlled by the isoperimetric ratio of the domain. This has applications to the nodal deficiency of eigenfunctions and is closely related to a long-standing conjecture of Yau on the Hausdorff measure of nodal sets.
We show that as the ratio between the first Dirichlet eigenvalues of a convex domain and of the ball with the same volume becomes large, the same must happen to the corresponding ratio of isoperimetric constants. The proof is based on the generalization to arbitrary dimensions of Polya and Szego's 1951 upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian on planar star-shaped domains which depends on the support function of the domain. As a by-product, we also obtain a sharp upper bound for the spectral gap of convex domains.
Let $λ_i(Ω,V)$ be the $i$th eigenvalue of the Schrödinger operator with Dirichlet boundary conditions on a bounded domain $Ω\subset \R^n$ and with the positive potential $V$. Following the spirit of the Payne-Pólya-Weinberger conjecture and under some convexity assumptions on the spherically rearranged potential $V_\star$, we prove that $λ_2(Ω,V) \le λ_2(S_1,V_\star)$. Here $S_1$ denotes the ball, centered at the origin, that satisfies the condition $λ_1(Ω,V) = λ_1(S_1,V_\star)$. Further we prove under the same convexity assumptions on a spherically symmetric potential $V$, that $λ_2(B_R, V) /…
We prove the long-standing Payne conjecture that the $k^{\text{th}}$ eigenvalue in the buckling problem for a clamped plate is not less than the ${k+1}^{\text{st}}$ eigenvalue for the membrane of the same shape which is fixed on the boundary. Moreover, we show that the Payne conjecture is still true for $n$-dimensional case ($n\ge 2)$.
In this paper, we study eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of $p$-Laplacians with Dirichlet boundary condition on graphs. We characterize the first eigenfunction (and the maximum eigenfunction for a bipartite graph) via the sign condition. By the uniqueness of the first eigenfunction of $p$-Laplacian, as $p\to 1,$ we identify the Cheeger constant of a symmetric graph with that of the quotient graph. By this approach, we calculate various Cheeger constants of spherically symmetric graphs.
Inequalities for the eigenvalues of the (negative) Laplacian subject to mixed boundary conditions on polyhedral and more general bounded domains are established. The eigenvalues subject to a Dirichlet boundary condition on a part of the boundary and a Neumann boundary condition on the remainder of the boundary are estimated in terms of either Dirichlet or Neumann eigenvalues. The results complement several classical inequalities between Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues due to Pólya, Payne, Levine and Weinberger, Friedlander, and others.
Given a Schrödinger differential expression on an exterior Lipschitz domain we prove strict inequalities between the eigenvalues of the corresponding selfadjoint operators subject to Dirichlet and Neumann or Dirichlet and mixed boundary conditions, respectively. Moreover, we prove a strict inequality between the eigenvalues of two different elliptic differential operators on the same domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions.
In this paper, we investigate the monotonicity of the first Steklov--Dirichlet eigenvalue on eccentric annuli with respect to the distance, namely $t$, between the centers of the inner and outer boundaries of an annulus. We first show the differentiability of the eigenvalue in $t$ and obtain an integral expression for the derivative value in two and higher dimensions. We then derive an upper bound of the eigenvalue for each $t$, in two dimensions, by the variational formulation. We also obtain a lower bound of the eigenvalue, given a restriction that the two boundaries of the annulus are suffi…
We study bounds on the Riesz means of the mixed Steklov-Neumann and Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalue problem on a bounded domain $Ω$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$. The Steklov-Neumann eigenvalue problem is also called the sloshing problem. We obtain two-term asymptotically sharp lower bounds on the Riesz means of the sloshing problem and also provide an asymptotically sharp upper bound for the Riesz means of mixed Steklov-Dirichlet problem. The proof of our results for the sloshing problem uses the average variational principle and monotonicity of sloshing eigenvalues. In the case of Steklov-Dirichlet eigenva…
Recently, a trace formula for non-self-adjoint periodic Schrödinger operators in $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ associated with Dirichlet eigenvalues was proved in [9]. Here we prove a corresponding trace formula associated with Neumann eigenvalues. In addition we investigate Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues of such operators. In particular, using the Dirichlet and Neumann trace formulas we provide detailed information on location of the Dirichlet and Neumann eigenvalues for the model operator with the potential $Ke^{2ix}$, where $K\in\mathbb{C}$.
We study the survival probability of a particle diffusing in a two-dimensional domain, bounded by a smooth absorbing boundary. The short-time expansion of this quantity depends on the geometric characteristics of the boundary, whilst its long-time asymptotics is governed by the lowest eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian defined on the domain. We present a simple algorithm for calculation of the short-time expansion for an arbitrary "star-shaped" domain. The coefficients are expressed in terms of powers of boundary curvature, integrated around the circumference of the domain. Based on this ex…
In this article we investigate the distribution of eigenvalues of the Dirichlet pseudo-differential operator $\sum_{i=1}^{d}(-\partial_i^2)^{s}, \, s\in (1/2,1]$ on an open and bounded subdomain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and predict bounds on the sum of the first $N$ eigenvalues, the counting function, the Riesz means and the trace of the heat kernel. Moreover, utilizing the connection of coherent states to the semi-classical approach of Quantum Mechanics we determine the sum for moments of eigenvalues of the associated Schrödinger operator.
We characterize the principal eigenvalue of the generator of the asymmetric zero-range process in dimensions d>2, with Dirichlet boundary on special domains. We obtain a Donsker-Varadhan variational representation for the principal eigenvalue, and show that the corresponding eigenfunction is unique in a natural class of functions. This allows us to obtain asymptotic hitting time estimates.
Let $H_{0, D}$ (resp., $H_{0,N}$) be the Schroedinger operator in constant magnetic field on the half-plane with Dirichlet (resp., Neumann) boundary conditions, and let $H_\ell : = H_{0, \ell} - V$, $\ell =D,N$, where the scalar potential $V$ is non negative, bounded, does not vanish identically, and decays at infinity. We compare the distribution of the eigenvalues of $H_D$ and $H_N$ below the respective infima of the essential spectra. To this end, we construct effective Hamiltonians which govern the asymptotic behaviour of the discrete spectrum of $H_\ell$ near $\inf σ_{ess}(H_\ell) = \inf …
The question of determining for which eigenvalues there exists an eigenfunction which has the same number of nodal domains as the label of the associated eigenvalue (Courant-sharp property) was motivated by the analysis of minimal spectral partitions. In previous works, many examples have been analyzed corresponding to squares, rectangles, disks, triangles, tori, \ldots . A natural toy model for further investigations is the Möbius strip, a non-orientable surface with Euler characteristic $0$, and particularly the "square" Möbius strip whose eigenvalues have higher multiplicities. In this case…
This paper is devoted to semiclassical estimates of the eigenvalues of the Pauli operator on a bounded open set whose boundary carries Dirichlet conditions. Assuming that the magnetic field is positive and a few generic conditions, we establish the simplicity of the eigenvalues and provide accurate asymptotic estimates involving Segal-Bargmann and Hardy spaces associated with the magnetic field.
We describe min-max formulas for the principal eigenvalue of a $V$-drift Laplacian defined by a vector field $V$ on a geodesic ball of a Riemannian manifold $N$. Then we derive comparison results for the principal eigenvalue with the one of a spherically symmetric model space endowed with a radial vector field, under pointwise comparison of the corresponding radial sectional and Ricci curvatures, and of the radial component of the vector fields. These results generalize the known case $V=0$.
