16 pages; presented at XXXVI Symposium on Math. Phys., Torun 09/06-12/06/04; the last paragraph of Section 3 has been reformulated, in particular a mistake in the equation governing the vertical part of gauge-natural lifts with respect to prolongations of principal connections (appearing e.g. in the vertical superpotential) has been corrected
When a gauge-natural invariant variational principle is assigned, to determine {\em canonical} covariant conservation laws, the vertical part of gauge-natural lifts of infinitesimal principal automorphisms -- defining infinitesimal variations of sections of gauge-natural bundles -- must satisfy generalized Jacobi equations for the gauge-natural invariant Lagrangian. {\em Vice versa} all vertical parts of gauge-natural lifts of infinitesimal principal automorphisms which are in the kernel of generalized Jacobi morphisms are generators of canonical covariant currents and superpotentials. In particular, only a few gauge-natural lifts can be considered as {\em canonical} generators of covariant gauge-natural physical charges.
The purpose of this paper is to extend the Green-Naghdi-Rivlin balance of energy method to continua with microstructure. The key idea is to replace the group of Galilean transformations with the group of diffeomorphisms of the ambient space. A key advantage is that one obtains in a natural way all the needed balance laws on both the macro and micro levels along with two Doyle-Erickson formulas.
In Lagrangian mechanics, Noether conservation laws including the energy one are obtained similarly to those in field theory. In Hamiltonian mechanics, Noether conservation laws are issued from the invariance of the Poincare-Cartan integral invariant under one-parameter groups of diffeomorphisms of a configuration space. Lagrangian and Hamiltonian conservation laws need not be equivalent.
In classical and quantum mechanical systems on manifolds with gauge-field fluxes, constants of motion are constructed from gauge-covariant extensions of Killing vectors and tensors. This construction can be carried out using a manifestly covariant procedure, in terms of covariant phase space with a covariant generalization of the Poisson brackets, c.q. quantum commutators. Some examples of this construction are presented.
In the work it has been shown that there are two types of the conservation laws. 1. The conservation laws that can be called exact ones. They point to an avalability of some conservative quantities or objects. Such objects are the physical structures, which the physical fields and relevant manifolds are constructed of. These are conservation laws for physical fields. 2. The conservation laws of energy, linear and angular momentum, and mass. These laws are conservation laws for material systems (material media). They establish a balance between changes of physical quantities and external action…
Conservation laws related to the gauge invariance of Lagrangians and Euler-Lagrange operators in finite and infinite order Lagrangian formalisms are analyzed.
Using a general theorem on conservation laws for arbitrary differential equations proved by Ibragimov, we have derived conservation laws for Dirac's symmetrized Maxwell-Lorentz equations under the assumption that both the electric and magnetic charges obey linear conductivity laws (dual Ohm's law). We find that this linear system allows for conservation laws which are non-local in time.
We derive conservation laws for Dirac-harmonic maps and their extensions to manifolds that have isometries, where we mostly focus on the spherical case. In addition, we discuss several geometric and analytic applications of the latter.
The paper aims to study the connection between symmetries and conservation laws for the 2D Ricci flow model. The procedure starts by obtaining a set of multipliers which generates conservation laws. Then, using a general relation which connects symmetries and conservation laws for whatever dynamical system, one determines symmetries related to a chosen multiplier. On this basis, new similarity solutions of the model, not yet discussed in literature, are highlighted.
The method of nonlinear self-adjointness is applied to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. The infinite set of conservation laws associated with the infinite algebra of Lie point symmetry of the KP equation is constructed.
Using the maximal Lie algebra of point symmetries of a system of nonlinear equations used in geophysical fluid dynamics, two conservation laws are found in addition to the conservation of energy.
All possible linearly independent local conservation laws for $n$-dimensional diffusion--convection equations $u_t=(A(u))_{ii}+(B^i(u))_i$ were constructed using the direct method and the composite variational principle. Application of the method of classification of conservation laws with respect to the group of point transformations [R.O. Popovych, N.M. Ivanova, J. Math. Phys., 2005, V.46, 043502 (math-ph/0407008)] allows us to formulate the result in explicit closed form. Action of the symmetry groups on the conservation laws of diffusion equations is investigated and generating sets of con…
A complete classification of all low-order conservation laws is carried out for a system of coupled semilinear wave equations which is a natural two-component generalization of the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation. The conserved quantities defined by these conservation laws are derived and their physical meaning is discussed.
In this work we consider the problem on group classification and conservation laws of the general first order evolution equations. We obtain the subclasses of these general equations which are quasi-self-adjoint and self-adjoint. By using the recent Ibragimov's Theorem on conservation laws, we establish the conservation laws of the equations admiting self-adjoint equations. We illustrate our results applying them to the inviscid Burgers' equation. In particular an infinite number of new symmetries of these equations are found and their corresponding conservation laws are established.
We present infinitely many nonlocal conservation laws, a pair of compatible local Hamiltonian structures and a recursion operator for the equations describing surfaces in three-dimensional space that admit nontrivial deformations which preserve both principal directions and principal curvatures (or, equivalently, the shape operator).
In this paper we consider generalization of procedure of construction of potential systems for systems of partial differential equations with multidimensional spaces of conservation laws. More precisely, for construction of potential systems in cases when dimension of the space of local conservation laws is greater than one, instead of using only basis conservation laws we use their arbitrary linear combinations being inequivalent with respect to equivalence group of the class of systems or symmetry group of the fixed system. It appears that the basis conservation laws can be equivalent with r…
A complete and explicit classification of all independent local conservation laws of Maxwell's equations in four dimensional Minkowski space is given. Besides the elementary linear conservation laws, and the well-known quadratic conservation laws associated to the conserved stress-energy and zilch tensors, there are also chiral quadratic conservation laws which are associated to a new conserved tensor. The chiral conservation laws possess odd parity under the electric-magnetic duality transformation of Maxwell's equations, in contrast to the even parity of the stress-energy and zilch conservat…
An effective algorithmic method is presented for finding the local conservation laws for partial differential equations with any number of independent and dependent variables. The method does not require the use or existence of a variational principle and reduces the calculation of conservation laws to solving a system of linear determining equations similar to that for finding symmetries. An explicit construction formula is derived which yields a conservation law for each solution of the determining system. In the first of two papers (Part I), examples of nonlinear wave equations are used to …
It is shown that expected values of free scalar and vector quantum fields on graphs satisfy the same conservation laws as the classic fields. It is demonstrated that a modified version of conservation laws is satisfied for Villain action. The proofs are based on the consideration of multidimensional normal distribution.
The notions of generating sets of conservation laws of systems of differential equations with respect to symmetry groups and equivalence groups are introduced and applied. This allows us to generalize essentially the procedure of finding potential symmetries for the systems with multidimensional spaces of conservation laws. A class of variable coefficient (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear diffusion-convection equations of general form $f(x)u_t=(g(x)A(u)u_x)_x+h(x)B(u)u_x$ is investigated. Using the most direct method, we carry out two classifications of local conservation laws up to equivalence rela…
There are many evolution partial differential equations which can be cast into Hamiltonian form. Conservation laws of these equations are related to one-parameter Hamiltonian symmetries admitted by the PDEs. The same result holds for semidiscrete Hamiltonian equations. In this paper we consider semidiscrete canonical Hamiltonian equations. Using symmetries, we find conservation laws for the semidiscretized nonlinear wave equation and Schrodinger equation.
A new approach, combining the Ibragimov method and the one by Anco and Bluman, with the aim of algorithmically computing local conservation laws of partial differential equations, is discussed. Some examples of the application of the procedure are given. The method, of course, is able to recover all the conservation laws found by using the direct method; at the same time we can characterize which symmetry, if any, is responsible for the existence of a given conservation law. Some new local conservation laws for the Short Pulse equation and for the Fornberg Whitham equation are also determined.
In the present paper we consider nonlinear multidimensional Cahn-Hilliard and Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equations that have many important applications in physics and chemistry, and a certain natural generalization of these equations. For an arbitrary number of spatial independent variables we present a complete list of cases when the generalized Cahn-Hilliard-Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation admits nontrivial local conservation laws of any order, and for each of those cases we give an explicit form of all the local conservation laws of all orders modulo trivial ones admitted by the equation under stu…
The methods of abstract simplicial homology and cohomology are reviewed and applied to the topology of electrical networks. Kirchhoffs laws of electrical circuits are shown to be manifestly homological in their origins. Since they are based in conservation laws, the geometric realization of abstract simplicial complexes is then reviewed and applied to the case of mechanical networks. The equilibrium condition for statics, the conservation laws for closed systems, and the balance principles for open systems are then shown to admit homological formulations.
We prove that potential conservation laws have characteristics depending only on local variables if and only if they are induced by local conservation laws. Therefore, characteristics of pure potential conservation laws have to essentially depend on potential variables. This statement provides a significant generalization of results of the recent paper by Bluman, Cheviakov and Ivanova [J. Math. Phys., 2006, V.47, 113505]. Moreover, we present extensions to gauged potential systems, Abelian and general coverings and general foliated systems of differential equations. An example illustrating pos…
Nonlinear self-adjointness of the anisotropic nonlinear heat equation is investigated. Mathematical models of heat conduction in anisotropic media with a source are considered and a class of self-adjoint models is identified. Conservation laws corresponding to the symmetries of the equations in question are computed.
In the present paper geometric aspects of relationship between non-Noether symmetries and conservation laws in Hamiltonian systems is discussed. It is shown that integrals of motion associated with continuous non-Noether symmetry are in involution whenever generator of the symmetry satisfies certain Yang-Baxter equation.
A complete classification of low-order conservation laws is obtained for time-dependent generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations. Through the Hamiltonian structure of these equations, a corresponding classification of Hamiltonian symmetries is derived. The physical meaning of the conservation laws and the symmetries is discussed.
Given a finite order Lagrangian L on a fibre bundle, its global generalized symmetries depending on higher order derivatives of dynamic variables are considered. The first variational formula is obtained. It leads both to the corresponding Lagarngian conservation laws and the characteristic equation for generalized symmetries of L.
We characterize all cases when a certain natural generalization of the Infeld--Rowlands equation admits nontrivial local conservation laws of any order, and give explicit form of these conservation laws modulo trivial ones. Furthermore, we prove that the equation under study admits no nontrivial local Hamiltonian and symplectic structures and no nontrivial local Noether and inverse Noether operators; the method of establishing the said nonexistence results can be readily applied to many other PDEs.
Lie point symmetries of the one-dimensional gas dynamics equations of a polytropic gas in Lagrangian coordinates are considered. Complete Lie group classification of these equations reduced to a scalar second-order PDE is performed. The classification parameter is the entropy. Noether theorem is applied for constructing conservation laws. The conservation laws can be represented in the gas dynamics variables. For the basic adiabatic case invariant and conservative difference schemes are discussed.
A recent paper considered symmetries and conservation laws of the plane one-dimensional flows for magnetohydrodynamics in the mass Lagrangian coordinates. This paper analyses the one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics flows with cylindrical symmetry in the mass Lagrangian coordinates. The medium is assumed inviscid and thermally non-conducting. It is modeled by a polytropic gas. Symmetries and conservation laws are found. The cases of finite and infinite electric conductivity need to be analyzed separately. For finite electric conductivity $σ(ρ,p)$ we perform Lie group classification, which iden…
This paper presents recent work on connections between symmetries and conservation laws. After reviewing Noether's theorem and its limitations, we present the Direct Construction Method to show how to find directly the conservation laws for any given system of differential equations. This method yields the multipliers for conservation laws as well as an integral formula for corresponding conserved densities. The action of a symmetry (discrete or continuous) on a conservation law yields conservation laws. Conservation laws yield non-locally related systems that, in turn, can yield nonlocal symm…
Two-dimensional gas dynamics equations in mass Lagrangian coordinates are studied in this paper. The equations describing these flows are reduced to two Euler-Lagrange equations. Using group classification and Noether's theorem, conservation laws are obtained. Their counterparts in Eulerian coordinates are given. Among these counterparts there are new conservation laws.
Generalizing results by Bryant and Griffiths [Duke Math. J., 1995, V.78, 531-676], we completely describe local conservation laws of second-order (1+1)-dimensional evolution equations up to contact equivalence. The possible dimensions of spaces of conservation laws prove to be 0, 1, 2 and infinity. The canonical forms of equations with respect to contact equivalence are found for all nonzero dimensions of spaces of conservation laws.
In this paper, we construct and analyse the symmetries and conservation laws (conserved densities) of a model of a nonlinear Scrodinger equation with PT-symmetric potentials and inhomogeneity.
We prove that the generalized Swift--Hohenberg equation with nonlinear right-hand side, a natural generalization of the Swift--Hohenberg equation arising in physics and describing inter alia pattern formation, has no nontrivial local conservation laws.
We investigate conservation laws of diffusion-convection equations to construct first-order potential systems corresponding to these equations. We do two iterations of the construction procedure, looking, in the second step, for the first-order conservation laws of the potential systems obtained in the first step.
The paper compares computational aspects of four approaches to compute conservation laws of single differential equations (DEs) or systems of them, ODEs and PDEs. The only restriction, required by two of the four corresponding computer algebra programs, is that each DE has to be solvable for a leading derivative. Extra constraints for the conservation laws can be specified. Examples include new conservation laws that are non-polynomial in the functions, that have an explicit variable dependence and families of conservation laws involving arbitrary functions. The following equations are investi…
We provide a complete classification of generalized and formal symmetries and local conservation laws for an evolution equation which generalizes the Kawahara equation having important applications in the study of plasma waves and capillary-gravity water waves. In particular, we show that the equation under study admits no genuinely generalized symmetries and has only finitely many local conservation laws, and thus this equation is not symmetry integrable.
Extensivity of conservation laws of the quantum Hirota model on a $1+1$ dimensional lattice is considered. This model can be interpreted in terms of an integrable many-body quantum Floquet dynamics. We establish the procedure to generate a continuous family of quasilocal conservation laws from the conserved operators proposed by Faddeev and Volkov. The Hilbert-Schmidt kernel which allows the calculation of inner products of these new conservation laws is explicitly computed. This result has potential applications in quantum quench and transport problems in integrable quantum field theories.
Being quantized, conserved Noether symmetry functions are represented by Hermitian operators in the space of solutions of the Schrodinger equation, and their mean values are conserved.
We find noncommutative analogs for well-known polynomial evolution systems with higher conservation laws and symmetries. The integrability of obtained non-Abelian systems is justified by explicit zero curvature representations with spectral parameter.
Using the lax pair, nonlocal symmetry of the coupled Hirota equation is obtained. By introducing an appropriate auxiliary dependent variable the nonlocal symmetry is successfully localized to a Lie point symmetry. For the closed prolongation, one-dimensional optimal systems and nonlocal conservation laws of the coupled Hirota equation are studied.
All three-point and five-point conservation laws for the discrete Korteweg-de Vries equations are found. These conservation laws satisfy a functional equation, which we solve by reducing it to a system of partial differential equations. Our method uses computer algebra intensively, because the determining functional equation is quite complicated.
We introduce a method to construct conservation laws for a large class of linear partial differential equations. In contrast to the classical result of Noether, the conserved currents are generated by any symmetry of the operator, including those of the non-Lie type. An explicit example is made of the Dirac equation were we use our construction to find a class of conservation laws associated with a 64 dimensional Lie algebra of discrete symmetries that includes CPT.
We consider a new nonlocal formulation of the water-wave problem for a free surface with an irrotational flow based on the work of Ablowitz, Fokas, and Musslimani and presented in the recent work of Oliveras. The main focus of the short paper is to show how one can systematically derive Olver's eight conservation laws not only for an irrotational fluid, but also for constant vorticity (linear shear flow) without explicitly relying on the underlying Lie symmetries. This allows us to make draw new conclusions about conservation laws and posit the existence of additional, nonlocal, conservation l…
We study local conservation laws for evolution equations in two independent variables. In particular, we present normal forms for the equations admitting one or two low-order conservation laws. Examples include Harry Dym equation, Korteweg-de-Vries-type equations, and Schwarzian KdV equation. It is also shown that for linear evolution equations all their conservation laws are (modulo trivial conserved vectors) at most quadratic in the dependent variable and its derivatives.
Using the concept of variational tricomplex endowed with a presymplectic structure, we formulate the general notion of symmetry. We show that each generalized symmetry of a gauge system gives rise to a sequence of conservation laws that are represented by on-shell closed forms of various degrees. This extends the usual Noether's correspondence between global symmetries and conservation laws to the case of lower-degree conservation laws and not necessarily variational equations of motion. Finally, we equip the space of conservation laws of a given degree with a Lie bracket and establish a homom…
We investigate large deviations for a family of conservative stochastic PDEs (conservation laws) in the asymptotic of jointly vanishing noise and viscosity. We obtain a first large deviations principle in a space of Young measures. The associated rate functional vanishes on a wide set, the so-called set of measure-valued solutions to the limiting conservation law. We therefore investigate a second order large deviations principle, thus providing a quantitative characterization of non-entropic solutions to the conservation law.
We study a class of variational problems for regularized conservation laws with Lax's entropy-entropy flux pairs. We first introduce a modified optimal transport space based on conservation laws with diffusion. Using this space, we demonstrate that conservation laws with diffusion are "flux--gradient flows". We next construct variational problems for these flows, for which we derive dual PDE systems for regularized conservation laws. Several examples, including traffic flow and Burgers' equation, are presented. Incorporating both primal-dual algorithms and monotone schemes, we successfully com…
For systems of partial differential equations in three spatial dimensions, dynamical conservation laws holding on volumes, surfaces, and curves, as well as topological conservation laws holding on surfaces and curves, are studied in a unified framework. Both global and local formulations of these different conservation laws are discussed, including the forms of global constants of motion. The main results consist of providing an explicit characterization for when two conservation laws are locally or globally equivalent, and for when a conservation law is locally or globally trivial, as well as…
Quantum non-linear SCHROEDINGER equation is equivalent to Lieb-Liniger model. It has non-trivial conservation laws. Recently these conservation laws were used for evaluation of the three-body recombination rate for interacting gas of quantum bosons. These conservations laws were known already in 1989. Submitted text is retyping of the preprint of Centre for Mathematical Analysis of Australian National University CMA-R33-89. It was discussed in Leningrad Branch of the V.A. Steklov Mathematical Institute at that time. A copy of the original preprint can be found in the section Quantum Inverse Sc…
For the hyperbolic system of quasilinear first-order partial differential equations, linearizable by hodograph transformation, the conservation laws are used to solve the Cauchy problem. The equivalence of the initial problem for quasilinear system and the problem for conservation laws system permits to construct the characteristic lines in domains, where Jacobian of hodograph transformations is equal to zero. Moreover, the conservation laws give all solutions of the linearized system. Some examples from the gas dynamics and theory of plasticity are considered.
The explicit formulation of the general inverse problem on conservation laws is presented for the first time. In this problem one aims to derive the general form of systems of differential equations that admit a prescribed set of conservation laws. The particular cases of the inverse problem on first integrals of ordinary differential equations and on conservation laws for evolution equations are studied. We also solve the inverse problem on conservation laws for differential equations admitting an infinite dimensional space of zeroth-order conservation-law characteristics. This particular cas…
Being gauge non-invariant, a Chern-Simons (2k-1)-form seen as a Lagrangian of gauge theory on a (2k-1)-dimensional manifold leads to the gauge conservation law of a modified Noether current.
We introduce notions of equivalence of conservation laws with respect to Lie symmetry groups for fixed systems of differential equations and with respect to equivalence groups or sets of admissible transformations for classes of such systems. We also revise the notion of linear dependence of conservation laws and define the notion of local dependence of potentials. To construct conservation laws, we develop and apply the most direct method which is effective to use in the case of two independent variables. Admitting possibility of dependence of conserved vectors on a number of potentials, we g…
A set of infinitely many nonlocal conservation laws are revealed for (1+1)-dimensional evolution equations. For some special known integrable systems, say, the KdV and Dym equations, it is found that different nonlocal conservation laws can lead to same new integrable systems via reciprocal transformation. On the other hand, it can be considered as one solution of the new model obtained via reciprocal transformation(s) can be changed to different solutions of the original model. The fact indicates also that two or more different (local and nonlocal) conservation laws can be used to find implic…
