This paper shows that the left-invariant geodesic flow on the symplectic group relative to the Frobenius metric is an integrable system that is not contained in the Mishchenko-Fomenko class of rigid body metrics. This system may be expressed as a flow on symmetric matrices and is bi-Hamiltonian. This analysis is extended to cover flows on symmetric matrices when an isomorphism with the symplectic Lie algebra does not hold. The two Poisson structures associated with this system, including an analysis of its Casimirs, are completely analyzed. Since the system integrals are not generated by its C…
We discuss the enumeration of planar graphs using bijections with suitably decorated trees, which allow for keeping track of the geodesic distances between faces of the graph. The corresponding generating functions obey non-linear recursion relations on the geodesic distance. These are solved by use of stationary multi-soliton tau-functions of suitable reductions of the KP hierarchy. We obtain a unified formulation of the (multi-) critical continuum limit describing large graphs with marked points at large geodesic distances, and obtain integrable differential equations for the corresponding s…
We study classical integrable systems based on the Alekseev-Meinrenken dynamical r-matrices corresponding to automorphisms of self-dual Lie algebras, ${\cal G}$. We prove that these r-matrices are uniquely characterized by a non-degeneracy property and apply a construction due to Li and Xu to associate spin Calogero type models with them. The equation of motion of any model of this type is found to be a projection of the natural geodesic equation on a Lie group $G$ with Lie algebra ${\cal G}$, and its phase space is interpreted as a Hamiltonian reduction of an open submanifold of the cotangent…
Geodesics are used in a wide array of applications in cosmology and astrophysics. However, it is not a trivial task to efficiently calculate exact geodesic distances in an arbitrary spacetime. We show that in spatially flat (3+1)-dimensional Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes, it is possible to integrate the second-order geodesic differential equations, and derive a general method for finding both timelike and spacelike distances given initial-value or boundary-value constraints. In flat spacetimes with either dark energy or matter, whether dust, radiation, or a stiff fluid,…
In order to study the quantum geometry of random surfaces in Liouville gravity, we propose a definition of geodesic distance associated to a Gaussian free field on a regular lattice. This geodesic distance is used to numerically determine the Hausdorff dimension associated to shortest cycles of 2d quantum gravity on the torus coupled to conformal matter fields, showing agreement with a conjectured formula by Y. Watabiki. Finally, the numerical tools are put to test by quantitatively comparing the distribution of lengths of shortest cycles to the corresponding distribution in large random trian…
We derive the exact generating function for planar maps (genus zero fatgraphs) with vertices of arbitrary even valence and with two marked points at a fixed geodesic distance. This is done in a purely combinatorial way based on a bijection with decorated trees, leading to a recursion relation on the geodesic distance. The latter is solved exactly in terms of discrete soliton-like expressions, suggesting an underlying integrable structure. We extract from this solution the fractal dimensions at the various (multi)-critical points, as well as the precise scaling forms of the continuum two-point …
We consider the global Hadamard condition and the notion of Hadamard parametrix whose use is pervasive in algebraic QFT in curved spacetime (see refences in the main text). We point out the existence of a technical problem in the literature concerning well-definedness of the global Hadamard parametrix in normal neighbourhoods of Cauchy surfaces. We discuss in particular the definition of the (signed) geodesic distance $σ$ and related structures in an open neighbourhood of the diagonal of $M\times M$ larger than $U\times U$, for a normal convex neighborhood $U$, where $(M,g)$ is a Riemannian or…
