Let $ϕ$ be a polynomial over $K$ (a field of characteristic 0) such that the Hessian of $ϕ$ is a nonzero constant. Let $\barϕ$ be the formal Legendre Transform of $ϕ$. Then $\barϕ$ is well-defined as a formal power series over $K$. The Hessian Conjecture introduced here claims that $\barϕ$ is actually a polynomial. This conjecture is shown to be true when $K=\bb{R}$ and the Hessian matrix of $ϕ$ is either positive or negative definite somewhere. It is also shown to be equivalent to the famous Jacobian Conjecture. Finally, a tree formula for $\barϕ$ is derived; as a consequence, the tree inversion formula of Gurja and Abyankar is obtained.
In this paper a class of classical Hamiltonian systems is geometrically formulated. This class is such that a Hamiltonian can be written as the sum of a kinetic energy function and a potential energy function. In addition, these energy functions are assumed strictly convex. For this class of Hamiltonian systems Hessian and information geometric formulation is given. With this formulation, a generalized Toda's dual transform is proposed, where his original transform was used in deriving his integrable lattice system. Then a relation between the generalized Toda's dual transform and the Legendre…
The product of any number of Legendre functions, under a restricted domain, can be expanded by the corresponding Legendre polynomials, with the coefficient being the sinc function. While an analogous expansion can be made for any number of Gengenbauer functions, it is not allowed for more than two Jacobi functions. To obtain such an expansion, the sampling theorem is of great availability.
In this paper we demonstrate how the Legendre transform connects the statements of Noether's theorem in Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics. We give precise definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities in both the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian frameworks and discuss why these notions in the Hamiltonian framework are somewhat less rigid. We explore conditions which, when put on these definitions, allow the Legendre transform to set up a one-to-one correspondence between them. We also discuss how to preserve this correspondence when the definitions of symmetries and conserved quantities are …
Although perturbative quantum field theory is highly successful, it possesses a number of well-known analytic problems, from ultraviolet and infrared divergencies to the divergence of the perturbative expansion itself. As a consequence, it has been difficult, for example, to prove with full rigor that the Legendre transform of the quantum effective action is the generating functional of connected graphs. Here, we give a rigorous proof of this central fact. To this end, we show that the Legendre transform can be re-defined purely combinatorially and that it ultimately reduces to a simple homolo…
An extension of the Legendre transform to non-convex functions with vanishing Hessian as a mix of envelope and general solutions of the Clairaut equation is proposed. Applying this to systems with constraints, the procedure of finding a Hamiltonian for a degenerate Lagrangian is just that of solving a corresponding Clairaut equation with a subsequent application of the proposed Legendre-Clairaut transformation. In this way the unconstrained version of Hamiltonian equations is obtained. The Legendre-Clairaut transformation presented is involutive. We demonstrate the origin of the Dirac primary …
Exceptional orthogonal polynomials are families of orthogonal polynomials that arise as solutions of Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problems. They generalize the classical families of Hermite, Laguerre, and Jacobi polynomials by allowing for polynomial sequences that miss a finite number of "exceptional" degrees. In this paper we introduce a new construction of multi-parameter exceptional Legendre polynomials by considering the isospectral deformation of the classical Legendre operator. Using confluent Darboux transformations and a technique from inverse scattering theory, we obtain a fully explic…
The Frobenius method can be used to represent solutions of ordinary differential equations by (generalized) power series. It is useful to have prior knowledge of the coefficients of this series. In this contribution we demonstrate that the magnitude of the coefficients can be predicted to surprisingly high accuracy by a Legendre transformation of WKB approximated solutions to the differential equations.
We consider the Mellin transforms of certain Legendre functions based upon the ordinary and associated Legendre polynomials. We show that the transforms have polynomial factors whose zeros lie all on the critical line Re $s=1/2$. The polynomials with zeros only on the critical line are identified in terms of certain $_3F_2(1)$ hypergeometric functions. These polynomials possess the functional equation $p_n(s)=(-1)^{\lfloor n/2 \rfloor} p_n(1-s)$. Other hypergeometric representations are presented, as well as certain Mellin transforms of fractional part and fractional part-integer part function…
We present an argument which purports to show that the use of the standard Legendre transform in non-additive Statistical Mechanics is not appropriate. For concreteness, we use as paradigm, the case of systems which are conjecturally described by the (non-additive) Tsallis entropy. We point out the form of the modified Legendre transform that should be used, instead, in the non-additive thermodynamics induced by the Tsallis entropy. We comment on more general implications of this proposal for the thermodynamics of "complex systems".
We show the robustness of the structure of Legendre transform in thermodynamics against the replacement of the standard linear average with the Kolmogorov-Nagumo nonlinear average to evaluate the expectation values of the macroscopic physical observables. The consequence of this statement is twofold: 1) the relationships between the expectation values and the corresponding Lagrange multipliers still hold in the present formalism; 2) the universality of the Gibbs equation as well as other thermodynamic relations are unaffected by the structure of the average used in the theory.

The use of operational methods of different nature is shown to be a fairly powerful tool to study different problems regarding the theory of Legendre and Legendre-like polynomials. We show how the use of the well known integral representations linking Hermite and Legendre like polynomials and of operational technique allow the derivation of new properties regarding the generating functions, repeated derivatives of irrational functions and so on. We finally extend the method of the integral transform to functions with more than one variable and derive new expansion criteria of a given function …
Variational extremization of the relative Fisher information (RFI, hereafter) is performed. Reciprocity relations, akin to those of thermodynamics are derived, employing the extremal results of the RFI expressed in terms of probability amplitudes. A time independent Schrödinger-like equation (Schrödinger-like link) for the RFI is derived. The concomitant Legendre transform structure (LTS, hereafter) is developed by utilizing a generalized RFI-Euler theorem, which shows that the entire mathematical structure of thermodynamics translates into the RFI framework, both for equilibrium and non-equil…
This work extends a recently developed mathematical theory of thermodynamics for Markov processes with, and more importantly, without detailed balance. We show that the Legendre transform in connection to ensemble changes in Gibbs' statistical mechanics can be derived from the stochastic theory. We consider the joint probability $p_{XY}$ of two random variables X and Y and the conditional probability $p_{X|Y=y^*}$, with $y^*=<Y>$ according to $p_{XY}$. The stochastic free energies of the XY system (fluctuating Y ensemble) and the $X|Y$ system (fixed Y ensemble) are related by the chain rule fo…
This paper studies the third boundary problem of the Laplace equation with azimuthal symmetry. Many solutions of the boundary value problems in spherical coordinates are available in the form of infinite series of Legendre polynomials but the evaluation of the summing series shows many computational difficulties. Integral transform is a challenge as it involves an inverse Legendre transform. Here, the closed-form solution of the Laplace equation with the Robin boundary conditions on a sphere is solved by the Legendre transform. This analytical solution is expressed with the Appell hypergeometri…
A closed-form formula is derived for the generalized Clebsch-Gordan integral $ \int_{-1}^1 {[}P_ν(x){]}^2P_ν(-x)\D x$, with $ P_ν$ being the Legendre function of arbitrary complex degree $ ν\in\mathbb C$. The finite Hilbert transform of $ P_ν(x)P_ν(-x),-1<x<1$ is evaluated. An analytic proof is provided for a recently conjectured identity $\int_0^1[\mathbf K(\sqrt{1-k^2})]^{3}\D k=6\int_0^1[\mathbf K(k)]^2\mathbf K(\sqrt{1-k^2})k\D k=[Γ(1/4)]^{8}/(128π^2) $ involving complete elliptic integrals of the first kind $ \mathbf K(k)$ and Euler's gamma function $ Γ(z)$.
